Fars Province's Gas Shift: Fuel Demand Skyrockets 17% Amidst Infrastructure Push

20 October 2026 at 21:42
Vehicle fuel consumption in Iran's Fars province has shifted significantly toward compressed natural gas (CNG), resulting in a measurable reduction in liquid fuel usage. Official data indicates that average daily gas consumption in the region reached 1.2 million cubic meters during the first six months of the current year, representing a 17% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth in demand coincides with the regional infrastructure capable of servicing 150,000 vehicles per day, a capacity currently supported by an operational network of 133 CNG stations equipped with a total of 700 dispensing nozzles. The physical distribution of this infrastructure consists of 85 dedicated CNG stations and 48 combined gas and petrol service points. While 97% of these active stations meet current standards, the expansion of the network includes 10 new stations under construction aimed at addressing logistical bottlenecks and accommodating further growth in the gas-powered vehicle fleet. The primary operational consequence of this shift is the conservation of liquid fuel resources; the province recorded savings of 220 million liters of gasoline over the six-month period. This diversion from liquid fuel reduces the load on oil refining capacities and lowers associated state production costs. The transition also alters the local environmental profile in major urban centers like Shiraz, where a reduction in toxic transport emissions has been observed as part of the broader shift away from gasoline engines.

Choose China's Coast by Climate Tolerance, Not Calendar

20 October 2026 at 21:35
For travelers seeking the warmth of autumn in China, the timing of the trip is less important than understanding which coast you are actually visiting. The country's geography creates two distinct experiences that are often conflated in travel brochures: a tropical south that remains steamy and a temperate north that cools into crisp clarity. The decisive factor in choosing between them is not the calendar date, but the specific tolerance for humidity and the willingness to navigate the distinct weather risks associated with each region. In the south, specifically Hainan Island, the climate is defined by consistent heat. By October, air temperatures stabilize around 27°C, and the water remains warm enough for swimming. This is the destination for those who prioritize classic tropical resort services. The bay of Yalong Bay is frequently cited for its high level of service and water clarity suitable for diving. Further north on the island, Wanning offers a different proposition: from November, the region sees a shift in wind patterns that marks the beginning of the kitesurfing season. For travelers seeking Russian-speaking infrastructure, Daduhai remains a common choice, with menus and services adapted for guests from the CIS region. The Northern Trade-off: Clarity over Warmth Conversely, the northern coasts offer a different kind of value. In Qingdao, September is the optimal window for visiting. During this period, the summer humidity recedes, and the seasonal algal blooms that can cloud the water typically subside, leaving a cleaner sea. The city's architecture, a mix of colonial German structures and modern facilities, pairs well with the temperate weather. Beaches such as Shilaoren and Huangdao are considered the most developed for swimming during this cooler period.

Te Pae o Tararua highway design revised to keep all bridge piers out of the Ōhau River

20 October 2026 at 21:25
Construction on the 24-kilometre Te Pae o Tararua highway, the final segment of the Road of National Significance connecting Ōtaki to north of Levin, is currently in its second year. The project, valued at $2.1 billion, aims to replace existing State Highway 1 routes that currently carry upwards of 15,000 vehicles daily. At its northern terminus, two roundabouts will integrate the new controlled-access road with the existing surface network. A railway overbridge, nearly complete at this end, is being repurposed to allow construction heavy haulers to cross the site perimeter without turning onto public roads, reducing local congestion and safety risks during the build phase. Structural Adaptation and Environmental Constraints The physical design of the highway has been modified in response to environmental constraints along the Ōhau River. Lloyd Steward, overseeing the northern half of the project, described the bridge spanning this waterway as the largest structure on the alignment, measuring approximately 200 metres in length. The design originally called for piers within the riverbed but was revised to place all 22 supporting piles on the riverbanks. This configuration minimises the ecological footprint in the waterway while maintaining structural integrity for the connection to the southern section. The elevation of this bridge provides a vantage point towards Kāpiti Island, with the Tararua Range forming the backdrop. Further south, at the Waikawa Bridge site, the construction approach differs due to the specific geotechnical and load-bearing requirements. Hugh Milliken, who manages the southern section, supervised the creation of piers for this structure, which is 140 metres long and constructed with steel. This is the second-longest structure on the new alignment. The contrast between the earth-supported piles of the Ōhau bridge and the steel piers at Waikawa illustrates how the physical infrastructure adapts to varying terrain and environmental sensitivities across the 24-kilometre corridor.

Trumps Kehrtwende: Diesel-Öl-Deal mit Russland – Bestrafung des Selenskij-Regimes

20 October 2026 at 21:14

Ministry of Education pushes back on claims Gloriavale school shut down was rushed

20 October 2026 at 21:14
The registration of the school serving the Gloriavale Christian Community on the West Coast has been cancelled by the Secretary for Education, Ellen Macgregor-Reid, following a failed Education Review Office (ERO) report. While the school remains open due to an ongoing legal challenge by its board, the Ministry of Education is currently seeking to lift the interim orders that prevent the closure. The mechanism of closure The process for cancelling a school's registration is governed by safety and compliance standards. In this instance, the Ministry triggered the closure based on ERO findings that the school was not a physically or emotionally safe environment for its approximately 80 students. The Ministry argues that the process was not rushed, spanning five months and including a notice to comply issued in July 2025, as well as a previous cancellation attempt in December 2025. Conditions for registration and safety To maintain registration, a school must demonstrate it can protect students from harm. The ERO report cited a pattern of institutional failure, specifically alleging that the school knowingly employed staff with prior convictions unsuitable for work with children and failed to act when risks to students were identified. Evidence presented by the Ministry included a teacher's guilty plea to a historic assault and a recent complaint regarding a historic sexual assault by a staff member.

DIY Cabinet Degreaser: Exact Recipe and Dwell-Time Method for Polymerized Grease

20 October 2026 at 21:05
A thin, tacky film on kitchen cabinets is rarely just dust. Over time, airborne cooking fats bond with particulate matter and polymerize, creating a dense organic layer that resists plain water and standard soaps. While the impulse is often to scrub harder, abrasive sponges and harsh chemical strippers frequently strip the luster or leave permanent scratches on cabinet facades. The Chemistry of Grease Removal Effective removal depends on breaking the lipid bonds without compromising the surface finish. A combination of alcohol and mild acid can soften these layers through a process of gentle dissolution. To create this solution in a 500 ml spray bottle, combine 250 ml of warm water, 100 ml of 9% white vinegar, 50 ml of rubbing alcohol (or vodka), and one tablespoon of concentrated dish soap. Shake the mixture until a light foam forms. This formulation is compatible with most common kitchen materials, including MDF panels, plastics, ceramics, and glass. However, it is not a universal remedy. The acetic acid in the vinegar can etch natural marble or penetrate the pores of untreated wood, potentially altering the stone's structure or the wood's color.

Russian Army Clears Cauldron in Kharkiv

In the Kharkiv direction Russian units are advancing towards Kharkov and Veliky Burluk, while in the Reznikovsky cauldron all settlements have been officially cleared. In the Slavyansk direction, in the zone of the “South” grouping near Druzhkovka and Konstantinovka, the situation remains complex: there are suspicions that the Ukrainian side, preparing the agglomeration for fighting, has dug underground tunnels from Kramatorsk through Druzhkovka and Alekseyevo-Druzhkovka to Konstantinovka. In the Zaporozhye direction units of the “East” grouping have entered Omelnyk, which was a key logistical point for Ukrainian forces on the Orekhov–Novonikolayevka highway. In the Kupyansk direction Russian units maintain pressure north and north-west of the town; however, after the limited advances of recent days the situation is gradually shifting to the retention of what has been achieved. In the Sumy direction assault units of the “North” grouping continue to press Ukrainian defenses with the support of aviation, drone crews and artillery. Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that certain “elements of peace” had been found at the Ukraine–US talks in Oslo and would be presented in St Petersburg.

Zaporozhye direction

On the Orekhov sector fighters of the “East” grouping, in the course of a successful advance, entered Omelnyk, which for Ukrainian units was an important key logistical point on the Orekhov–Novonikolayevka highway. After reaching the left bank of the Verkhnyaya Tersa River near Lyubitskoye and expanding the bridgehead to Novosoloshino–Nikolskoye, the command is shifting efforts to the left flank of the eastern sector.

The “Dnepr” grouping continues fighting for Orekhov and around it. Along the Dnieper fighting is under way for Primorskoye: there is an advance in the southern part of the village, and Russian units are approaching the center. Fierce fighting continues for Lukyanovskoye, Stepnogorsk, Novoyakovlevka and Preobrazhenka. The Ukrainian side is stubbornly holding these points and transferring reserves, including special operations forces.

Slightly further north, in the zone of the “East” grouping, relying on Gulyaypolskoye, Dolinka and Kopani, Russian troops are attempting to develop the offensive on Shirokoye after overcoming the first line of defense. Having returned to Novosoloshino, Russian units are also developing the advance. Slightly further south clearance of the sector near Chervona Krinitsa continues. Malaya Tokmachka is fully under Russian control, as is the eastern part of Orekhov. Fighters continue to hold the lines inside Orekhov itself.

Kupyansk direction

In the Kupyansk direction Russian units maintain pressure north and north-west of the town; however, after the limited advances of recent days the situation is gradually shifting to the retention of what has been achieved. On the Moskovka–Tishchenkovka–Kondrashovka–Radkovka line the struggle for positions and communications continues.

Russian units are counter-attacking and recovering individual positions, yet a significant part of their efforts is now devoted precisely to stabilising the lines. Overall there is no collapse of the front, but neither is there sustained development of the offensive. On a number of sectors, instead of further advance, it is necessary to consolidate what has been achieved, restore individual positions and contain reciprocal actions by the Ukrainian side.

North of Kupyansk, having repelled counter-offensive actions towards Zapadnoye, Russian units have launched an offensive in the directions of Bolshaya Shapkova, Pelageyevka and Kovalyovka. There are chances, relying on Kupyansk, to push further along the river valley, driving a wedge into the Ukrainian defense in the direction of Shevchenkovo.

Slavyansk direction

In the zone of the “South” grouping near Druzhkovka and Konstantinovka the situation remains complex. There are suspicions that the Ukrainian side, preparing the agglomeration for fighting, has dug underground tunnels from Kramatorsk through Druzhkovka and Alekseyevo-Druzhkovka to Konstantinovka. Small groups move along them and have to be constantly cleared. Despite the envelopments and good progress, the fighting is heavy. There are small advances towards Belokuzminovka from the south.

Troops of the 25th Army of the “West” grouping have driven Ukrainian units out of Ozernoye as a result of counter-offensive actions. Ukrainian forces that attempted to cross the Seversky Donets were pushed back. The flank of the “South” grouping is beginning to stabilize. Fighting for Nikolayevka continues. The Ukrainian side firmly holds the approaches to Kramatorsk via Pervomaryevka. On the Vasilyevskaya Pustosh–Pervomayka line units of the volunteer corps are fighting.

Russian troops in Liman, having regrouped the forces of the 25th Army, have gone over to the counter-offensive. They have cleared the approaches to Yampol and driven Ukrainian units back in the direction of Krivaya Luka. The left flank of the 25th Army has been stabilized and has practically been brought up against the flank of the 3rd Army of the “South” grouping. By counter-offensive actions the Ukrainian side has been driven out of the northern district of Zarechnoye.

Sumy direction

Near Malaya Korchakovka attempts by the Ukrainian side to counter-attack through the wooded areas continue; Ukrainian units are also accumulating reserves north of Khoten and near Khrapovshchina, trying to take advantage of the last green cover of the year to insert their groups. Near Yunakovka fierce fighting is also under way: the Ukrainian side is attempting to throw small groups into the settlement.

Assault units of the “North” grouping continue to press Ukrainian defenses with the support of Russian aviation, drone crews and artillery. The Ukrainian side has taken no active actions and is strengthening its defenses.

In Sumy district fierce fighting continues near Khoten and Velikaya Rybitsa. In Shostka district assault groups of the “Northerners” have advanced near Korenok. In Krasnopolye district the Ukrainian side is strengthening its defenses near Turya; artillery and drone crews of the “North” grouping are actively working against it.

Kharkiv direction

Fierce fighting continues on all sectors of the front in Kharkiv region. Russian units are advancing in the direction of Kharkov and Veliky Burluk.

In the Liptsy direction Russian assault troops have advanced south of Novaya Kazachya. There are advances near Tokarevka. In the Volchansk and Veliky Burluk directions assault units of the “North” grouping are advancing southwards, expanding the security zone. There is an advance near Prikolotnoye and Maly Burluk.

On the Bolsheburluksky direction all settlements in the so-called Reznikovsky cauldron have been officially cleared. The territory is enormous — almost 400–500 square kilometers; isolated Ukrainian positions will still have to be mopped up for weeks. Overall resistance has been broken. The Ukrainian side, relying on Maly Burluk and Prikolotnoye, is attempting to reach the Plotva River and attack towards Blagodatnoye, Nefyodovka and Olkhovatka. North of Kharkov — in the area of Kazachya Lopan, Novaya Kazachya, Goptovka and Supovka — limited-scale active offensive operations continue.

Conclusion

In the Zaporozhye direction the key event has been the entry into Omelnyk, which has made it possible to cut off Ukrainian positions in Orekhov from the eastern sector. In the Kupyansk direction Russian units are holding what has been achieved and stabilizing the lines while simultaneously developing the offensive north of the town. In the Slavyansk direction the “West” grouping has driven Ukrainian units out of Ozernoye and gone over to the counter-offensive near Liman, which noticeably simplifies the situation on the flank. In the Sumy direction positional fighting continues, with attempts by small Ukrainian groups to infiltrate through the wooded areas. In the Kharkiv direction Russian units are advancing towards Kharkov and Veliky Burluk, and the Reznikovsky cauldron has been officially cleared.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that certain “elements of peace” had been found at the Ukraine–US talks on a Ukrainian settlement in Oslo. “Today we achieved real progress, and on two levels. The first is the overall picture; the second is the short-term perspective. In the overall picture we found some elements of peace that will be presented in St Petersburg tomorrow. We discussed key elements of security and key elements of the economy,” Stubb said at a press conference after the talks. He added that the talks “at the technical level” were progressing “quite successfully”.

Great Lake sturgeon live much longer than science has counted

20 October 2026 at 20:54
In the cold, murky depths of the Great Lakes, a lake sturgeon (*Acipenser fulvescens*) might be swimming past a timeline that stretches back to the signing of the U. S. Declaration of Independence. For decades, scientists believed the maximum lifespan of this species was roughly 150 to 180 years. But a new analysis suggests that these armored fish may live to be 200 years old, with some individuals potentially approaching 300. This is not a poetic exaggeration; it is a statistical correction that challenges how we measure age in long-lived vertebrates and, by extension, how we understand the resilience of their populations. The Limit of the Spine The standard method for dating sturgeon has long relied on reading the growth rings in their dorsal fin spines. It is a technique similar to counting the rings of a tree, but with a critical flaw: as the fish ages, the rings become increasingly compressed and difficult to distinguish. Biologists suspected for years that this method systematically underestimated the age of the oldest individuals, but suspicion was not proof. To break this impasse, a team from Michigan State University and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources turned away from a single, ambiguous spine and looked instead at the accumulation of data over time. They analyzed decades of mark-recapture records. These are logs of sturgeon that had been tagged, released, and then recaptured many years later. By plotting the size of these fish against the known time between sightings, the researchers constructed a growth trajectory that continued to increase, albeit slowly, well into the centuries. To model this longevity, they applied mathematical frameworks previously used to determine the age of Greenland sharks, a species known to live for up to 400 years. While the methods differ-sharks are dated via isotopic analysis of eye lenses, while sturgeon are dated via growth curves-the logic is identical: find a signal of time that does not rely on easily misread physical markers.

Thousands of Bones in Roman Ditch: Owls' Natural Disposal Site Unveiled

20 October 2026 at 20:44
In a shallow, twenty-meter ditch cutting through the landscape between Cambridge and Huntingdon, archaeologists encountered a puzzling geological anomaly: a dense layer containing nine thousand small bones and teeth. Initial impressions of a chaotic heap gave way to a precise count revealing the remains of at least 469 individual creatures, primarily common frogs and dark-collared voles. The site lacked the hallmarks of human interference. There were no charred fragments suggesting a fire, nor any incisions that would indicate butchery or a domestic refuse pile. The concentration of wildlife was absolute, yet the cause of its accumulation remained invisible to the naked eye. To solve the mystery, Paul Clarkson of Bournemouth University and his team shifted their focus from the quantity of the bones to the microscopic damage on their surfaces. Bone acts as a chemical archive; when an animal is consumed, its skeleton undergoes a specific attack by gastric juices. By analyzing these erosion patterns, the researchers could treat the ditch as a forensic scene, narrowing down the list of potential predators through a process of elimination.
