White House promotes 'Trump TV' with AI-altered photo

7 October 2026 at 20:45
The White House has promoted "Trump TV" using an AI-altered photo of passengers apparently watching the president's new streaming channel. But the image was originally posted online in February 2023, showing passengers watching the NFL Super Bowl, with one watching the film "Hitch". The original photo was modified using AI to make it appear as if the passengers were watching Trump TV. The post did not discalose that the image had been altered. Vedika Bahl explains in Truth or Fake.

7 October 2026 at 08:48
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday urged Western nations to return to what he called their civilisational roots and ensure the West "maintains its place at the head of the world" in a speech delivered against the backdrop of the Acropolis in Athens. The top US diplomat called on Europe to follow President Donald Trump's America in choosing the "unapologetic pursuit of national power" over the "global community".

7 October 2026 at 02:06
Haiti has indefinitely postponed elections scheduled for December and February, the electoral council said Tuesday, citing technical and operational requirements as gang violence continues to disrupt preparations. The delay leaves Haitians without a democratic process as authorities struggle to register voters and secure areas needed for the poll.

'Colossal failure: Death penalty system in America is a broken process from start to finish'

6 October 2026 at 18:50
Jean-Emile Jammine is pleased to welcome Reed Brody, international human rights lawyer and former New York assistant attorney general. According to Brody, the botched execution of Christa Pike reflects a much larger problem: the relationship between capital punishment, institutional failure, due process, and human dignity. The technical failure of lethal injection exposes weaknesses throughout the legal architecture surrounding the death penalty, from the quality and adequacy of defense representation to the profound disparities between jurisdictions and the difficulties states face in administering executions.

Brazil 'has moved to the right progressively over the last two decades', expert says

6 October 2026 at 18:05
Senator Flavio Bolsonaro received on Monday endorsements from Ronaldo Caiado and Romeu Zema, two right-wing politicians who ran against him in Sunday's first-round vote, for ‌the runoff against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva later this month. Speaking with FRANCE 24's Sharon Gaffney, Anthony Pereira, Executive Director of the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University, says that "Lula's path to victory lies in mobilising voters who didn't vote in the first round" while Flavio Bolsonaro "will probably benefit from the voters who voted for other right-wing candidates and who will simply migrate to him, so it looks a lot easier for Flavio to win the second round than it does for Lula".

Mexico makes push for fracking despite environmental concerns

6 October 2026 at 13:55
Following months of consultations with energy experts, Mexico is preparing to tap its shale oil and gas reserves using one of the world's most controversial extraction techniques: fracking. The process is already used to extract oil in the southeastern state of Veracruz, where local communities have long complained of pollution and environmental damage. But the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum is seeking to reduce Mexico's reliance on the United States and – eventually – achieve energy self-sufficiency. FRANCE 24's Quentin Duval and Laurence Cuvillier report.

Quebec separatists vow independence vote after provincial election win

5 October 2026 at 17:08
The separatist Parti Québécois won provincial elections on Monday, but fell just short of enough seats to govern alone in Canada's French-speaking province, Quebec. The victory comes just two weeks ahead of a vote in Alberta, Canada's economic powerhouse, on whether it wants to begin the process of leaving the country.

Trump targets tax-free diesel as Republicans approach midterms

6 October 2026 at 04:08
President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order to ease limits on tax-free red-dyed diesel as fuel prices put pressure on Republican candidates. Trump said the move would save farmers millions of dollars and lower the cost of goods, though analysts said the change would not benefit farmers already using tax-exempt fuel.

Quebec votes as separatist surge poses test for Canada PM

5 October 2026 at 22:36
Quebec separatists eyed a return to power in Canada's majority French-speaking province Monday in an election that could test Prime Minister Mark Carney's message of national unity to confront the United States. Carney is popular in Quebec, and the possible success of the separatist Parti Quebecois (PQ) is not seen as a repudiation of his stance toward President Donald Trump, whose trade war and annexation threats have infuriated Canadians. FRANCE 24's Christopher Guly reports from Ottawa.

Concerns of US interference weigh on Brazil vote

5 October 2026 at 21:37
Conservative Senator Flavio Bolsonaro pulled off a surprise on Sunday in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election by finishing ahead of the incumbent left-wing President Lula, whom he will face in the runoff on October 25. Suspicions of U.S. interference have been hanging over the campaign, even as Donald Trump has never hidden his closeness to the far-right former president Bolsonaro - Flavio’s father - and his animosity toward Lula da Silva. FRANCE 24's Emerald Maxwell reports.

Return of the Bolsonaros: Why the far-right surge in Brazilian elections?

5 October 2026 at 19:44
Do voters care about attempted coups? Brazil's Flavio Bolsonaro is on the cusp of unseating Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the country's October 25 presidential runoff. Bolsonaro's father was jailed over the Brazilian version of the January 6 storming of the US Capitol. Up and down the ballot, other Bolsonaros have been elected in the first round as the far right surges. Is it about incumbent fatigue? Do Brazilians subscribe to Bolsonaro's "God, Homeland, Family" mantra?

How Lula’s successes in Brazil may have paved the way for his presidential defeat

5 October 2026 at 16:21
Brazil’s veteran leftist President Luiz Inacio "Lula" da Silva trailed Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of his far-right predecessor, in the first-round presidential vote on Sunday. Some analysts suggest that the sweeping anti-poverty measures Lula put in place over two decades may have helped give rise to a growing lower-middle class drawn to the far right’s promise to get the government out of people’s lives.

'Very bad result for Lula: Bolsonaro is far more effective at speaking to that growing middle class'

5 October 2026 at 13:54
Eve Irvine is pleased to welcome Felipe Krause, the head of Oxford University's Brazilian Studies Programme. Brazil's election reflects a political landscape that has become increasingly polarized, explains Krause. And he describes the current mood as one of “tired polarization: People are just exhausted. They feel that the political class is just kind of offering more of the same". The first round reveals a significant consolidation of the Brazilian right in government. Brazil's expanding middle class is increasingly attracted to entrepreneurialism and individualism, constituencies that "Bolsonarismo" has proved particularly effective at reaching.

Brazil presidential election: 'Bolsonaro being ahead is a surprise,' researcher says

5 October 2026 at 13:52
Far-right candidate Flavio Bolsonaro has pulled off a surprise win in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election. He defied most polls to win with 47 percent, compared to 45 percent for leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva. We spoke to Thomas Zicman de Barros, a research fellow at CEVIPOF, the political research centre at Sciences Po University, and columnist for our sister radio station RFI. He told us that never before in Brazilian history has a candidate who was behind in the first round then succeeded in the second.
