'Colossal failure: Death penalty system in America is a broken process from start to finish'

6 October 2026 at 18:50
Jean-Emile Jammine is pleased to welcome Reed Brody, international human rights lawyer and former New York assistant attorney general. According to Brody, the botched execution of Christa Pike reflects a much larger problem: the relationship between capital punishment, institutional failure, due process, and human dignity. The technical failure of lethal injection exposes weaknesses throughout the legal architecture surrounding the death penalty, from the quality and adequacy of defense representation to the profound disparities between jurisdictions and the difficulties states face in administering executions.

Brazil 'has moved to the right progressively over the last two decades', expert says

6 October 2026 at 18:03
Senator Flavio Bolsonaro received on Monday endorsements from Ronaldo Caiado and Romeu Zema, two right-wing politicians who ran against him in Sunday's first-round vote, for ‌the runoff against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva later this month. Speaking with FRANCE 24's Sharon Gaffney, Anthony Pereira, Executive Director of the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University, says that "Lula's path to victory lies in mobilising voters who didn't vote in the first round" while Flavio Bolsonaro "will probably benefit from the voters who voted for other right-wing candidates and who will simply migrate to him, so it looks a lot easier for Flavio to win the second round than it does for Lula".

Quebec votes as separatist surge poses test for Canada PM

5 October 2026 at 22:36
Quebec separatists eyed a return to power in Canada's majority French-speaking province Monday in an election that could test Prime Minister Mark Carney's message of national unity to confront the United States. Carney is popular in Quebec, and the possible success of the separatist Parti Quebecois (PQ) is not seen as a repudiation of his stance toward President Donald Trump, whose trade war and annexation threats have infuriated Canadians. FRANCE 24's Christopher Guly reports from Ottawa.

Concerns of US interference weigh on Brazil vote

5 October 2026 at 21:37
Conservative Senator Flavio Bolsonaro pulled off a surprise on Sunday in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election by finishing ahead of the incumbent left-wing President Lula, whom he will face in the runoff on October 25. Suspicions of U.S. interference have been hanging over the campaign, even as Donald Trump has never hidden his closeness to the far-right former president Bolsonaro - Flavio’s father - and his animosity toward Lula da Silva. FRANCE 24's Emerald Maxwell reports.

'Very bad result for Lula: Bolsonaro is far more effective at speaking to that growing middle class'

5 October 2026 at 13:54
Eve Irvine is pleased to welcome Felipe Krause, the head of Oxford University's Brazilian Studies Programme. Brazil's election reflects a political landscape that has become increasingly polarized, explains Krause. And he describes the current mood as one of “tired polarization: People are just exhausted. They feel that the political class is just kind of offering more of the same". The first round reveals a significant consolidation of the Brazilian right in government. Brazil's expanding middle class is increasingly attracted to entrepreneurialism and individualism, constituencies that "Bolsonarismo" has proved particularly effective at reaching.

Brazil: Lula and Bolsonaro tied in polls

4 October 2026 at 14:19
Brazilians began casting their votes on Sunday in a closely watch presidential election pitting incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva against right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Mara Nogueira, Senior Lecturer in Urban Geography at Birbeck, University of London, says the tight race reflects the consolidation of two political camps, with many Brazilians voting not out of support for a candidate, but to keep the other out of power. She points to the cost of living, religion and social media echo chambers as key factors shaping the vote, alongside a major banking scandal that has so far had limited impact on Flavio Bolsonaro’s campaign.

Lula is seeking a fourth and final term, warning that Brazil’s sovereignty is at stake amid pressure from Donald Trump. Bolsonaro, meanwhile, has highlighted his ties to the White House, saying Brazil needs better deals with the US, including over its rare mineral resources. Nick Rushworth has more on the controversial senator. Dr Andrea Aruska de Souza Santos, Director of King's College Brazil Institute in London, shares further insights.

Shirli Sitbon has this report.

Brazil: A portrait of Flavio Bolsonaro

4 October 2026 at 10:49
Brazilians are voting for governors and lawmakers, but the biggest stakes are in the presidential race. Twelve candidates are on the ballot, but the contest is seen as a toss-up between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro. 'General divide' in Brazil's elections: 'Voters not particularly enthusiastic about either of them'

4 October 2026 at 09:25
Alison Sargent is pleased to welcome Dr Marieke Riethof, Senior Lecturer in Latin American Politics at University of Liverpool. She sees parallels with the Brazil's 2022 election even if Flávio Bolsonaro does not have the same charisma or mobilizing capacity as his father. His programme remains a hardline political agenda that focuses on security and a reduction in the role of government. Lula, by contrast, offers a more interventionist vision, particularly in areas such as education, and socioeconomic policy. It could weaken multilateralism and reshape the country’s relationships with the United States, China, the European Union and the BRICS nations.

Brazil: Who is presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro?

2 October 2026 at 16:06

Flavio Bolsonaro's victory would add Brazil to the long list of Latin American countries that have shifted to the right or far right in recent months.

Great Black Hope: Pursuit of belonging 'becomes a kind of cancer that eats them from the inside out'

28 September 2026 at 12:37
Eve Irvine is pleased to welcome award-winning author Rob Franklin, joining us to discuss Great Black Hope, his acclaimed debut novel exploring race, class, respectability and belonging. Franklin wanted to write about the worlds he had spent years observing since childhood: including how class and race shape even our most intimate relationships.  At its centre is David Smith, a young Black man from a Southern bourgeois family. His education, manners and connections give him access, but he is constantly aware of the possibility of being cast out. That tension led him to think about respectability politics and the psychological cost of constantly performing an acceptable version of oneself.

Donald Trump courts Xi Jinping during high-profile White House visit

25 September 2026 at 10:38
President Donald Trump rolled out an unusually lavish welcome for Chinese President Xi Jinping, praising their personal friendship throughout a White House state dinner and other ceremonial events. While both leaders said they held frank discussions behind closed doors, the visit produced no major breakthroughs, prompting criticism from Democratic lawmakers who argued the pageantry overshadowed pressing issues including Iran, Taiwan, AI and trade.

'Trump views US-China relations as a personal friendship: Xi views US as an adversary to be managed'

24 September 2026 at 16:01
Erin Ogunkeye is pleased to welcome Henrietta Levin, Senior Fellow with the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. The US remains a powerful actor in its relationship with China. But power on paper is not the same thing as leverage at the negotiating table. Levin warns that President Trump’s highly personalized approach to Xi Jinping offers Beijing opportunities that China can easily exploit. Xi does not approach the relationship in the same way. Au contraire, he sees the United States as an adversary to be managed while China pursues its domestic priorities and strategic objectives in Asia, including on Taiwan.
