61 units of blood collected in Paphos donation drive

22 October 2026 at 07:49

A blood donation drive organised by the Paphos self-government organisation (EOA), the Paphos regional office and charity organisation Anazo has managed to secure 61 units of blood, contributing to meeting the needs of patients who require blood transfusions.

The units were collected after a total of 70 donors came forward to donate blood.

Deputy district officer of Paphos Froso Georgiou said the donation drive was dedicated to the memory of young people who passed away prematurely – Charalambos Leantzis, Andreas Thaddeus Miltiadou, Panagiotis Sink, Neophytos Tsangaras and Michalis Alexandrou, transforming their memory into a practical act of service to the public and highlighting the importance of voluntary blood donation and social solidarity.

The organisers expressed their gratitude towards all volunteer blood donors, collaborators and those who contributed to the success of the donation drive, saying the initiative emphasised the importance of collaboration between public services and social organisations when implementing substantial social impact initiatives.

Paphos morgue to be repaired in four days, temporary refrigerator in place

20 October 2026 at 10:35

The special refrigerator placed next to the Paphos general hospital morgue is to temporarily store bodies while works are under way to repair the alarm system, state health services Okypy said on Tuesday.

Following social media posts, Okypy spokesman Charalambos Charilaou clarified that the refrigerator brought in met specifications and that the whole process would take four days.

“The need to temporarily move bodies arose due to necessary works on the mortuary chamber alarm system. Fixing it will ensure early warning in case of a fault,” he added.

Charilaou explained that the procedure included moving the bodies, disinfecting, repairing the system and returning the bodies to the mortuary cabinets.

He assured that all necessary measures were being taken for the safe storage of bodies during works.

In May, a fault in the refrigerated mortuary cabinets forced the morgue to close.

The morgue was expected to reopen in early June after repairs were concluded.

Okypy said the bodies already at the morgue in May had been moved to suitable facilities, while for new bodies the families were being advised to make arrangements with funeral homes.

In the case that families are unable to do so, the Paphos general hospital would undertake to find alternative facilities.

Okypy also said carrying out post mortems at a single reference centre, such as the Nicosia general hospital morgue, was neither an obstacle to any procedure nor a burden, and that best practices had been taken into account.

Termination of Paphos-Polis road contract was unavoidable, public works department says

19 October 2026 at 19:15

The termination of the contract for the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road was unavoidable, as was the rejection of tenders by the tenders board, the public works department said in a statement responding to Disy vice-president Yiannis Karousos.

The department said that, following instructions from Transport Minister Evi Tsolaki, it had prepared proposals since September 16, 2026, outlining various options for completing the project.

The proposals now concern the construction of a four-lane road, with the aim of selecting a solution that would avoid further delays or a recurrence of problems encountered both recently and in the past.

The department noted that the project has been pending since the 1990s.

It also rejected claims that there had been delays in the evaluation of tenders.
