CBS makes J.J. Watt the permanent Tony Romo replacement with a new contract and Super Bowl assignment

22 October 2026 at 15:19

Tony Romo's loss has been J.J. Watt's gain at CBS – and now it's permanent.

Watt on Thursday was named lead analyst for the NFL on CBS in a new multi-year contract agreement. The announcement was made by David Berson, Chairman of Skydance's Global Sports Group.

Watt will continue to call the network’s top NFL games alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as CBS Sports’ lead NFL announce team, including during the 2027 season when they call Super Bowl LXII in Atlanta.

TONY ROMO AND CBS PART WAYS BUT HISTORY SUGGESTS ANALYST WILL BE BACK ELSEWHERE

"I’ve had a front-row seat to J.J.’s growth as a top-tier broadcaster, watching him tackle this role just like he did his Hall-of-Fame playing career," Berson said in a release by the network. "He’s insightful, entertaining, passionate, meticulous in his preparation, and the ultimate teammate. He has a unique ability to see things and communicate to fans of all levels. We are thrilled to have him leading our NFL coverage."

Watt didn't start the 2026 NFL season in his current role. That belonged to Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.

NFL ANALYST TONY ROMO PLACED ON LEAVE BY CBS SPORTS FOLLOWING DRUNK DRIVING ARREST IN WISCONSIN

But Romo ran afoul of his assignment when he was arrested on July 23, after a traffic stop on southbound Interstate 43 near downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He later pleaded no contest to a first-offense OWI, with the sentence including a six-month revocation of his driving privileges and an alcohol-assessment requirement.

CBS said on July 31 that Romo was on leave "until further notice," but then the network announced on Oct. 2 that it had "mutually agreed to part ways" with its long-time lead analyst.

WITH TONY ROMO OUT AT CBS, TROY AIKMAN AND GREG OLSEN SUDDENLY BECOME LOGICAL REPLACEMENTS

Watt, meanwhile, was the next man up. He has served as the network's lead analyst since the start of the season and that now becomes a permanent role after what was obviously a successful trial period.

The network chose the man in the seat over other possible permanent replacements for Romo, Greg Olsen and others among them.

"I am incredibly honored and grateful to have the opportunity to represent CBS Sports and all of the fantastic people who make this place so special," Watt said in a statement. "From the brotherhood of The NFL Today to my crews calling games, I couldn’t ask for better teammates alongside me on this television journey.

"I am thankful to David Berson for his leadership, vision and trust. I love this job and can’t wait to see ya Sunday with Jim and Tracy and many more Sundays to come!"

Watt joined CBS Sports in 2023 as a studio analyst on The NFL Today. Last season, Watt moved to the booth to call games with Ian Eagle and Evan Washburn.

Watt was a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and was honored as the 2017 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

John Goodman was 'eating alcoholically' before starting weight loss journey at nearly 400 pounds

21 October 2026 at 22:18

John Goodman is getting candid about what led him to lose weight.

During a recent interview with The New Yorker, the 74-year-old actor discussed his struggles with his weight and alcoholism, saying that he got sober in his 50s, but was trying to manage his weight before quitting.

"I’d lose sixty pounds in a summer, gain it all back. Seventy pounds, eighty pounds. And that got tiring," he said. "I took steps so I wouldn’t have to do that anymore. I was almost four hundred pounds. I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking."

He shared that to improve his health, he "had an operation on my stomach," but said he also became "anemic and lost a layer of fat under my skin."

'MIKE & MOLLY' STAR BILLY GARDELL REVEALS WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY 'PROBABLY SAVED' HIS LIFE

When discussing his experience with alcoholism, the "Roseanne" star shared his struggles began in 1978 when his girlfriend at the time "put me on waivers, so my nights were free for the first time in five years."

He recalled going out to multiple bars until drinking became a "habit," noting, "I started gaining weight at an alarming rate." He pinpointed one bar in particular, Café Central, noting he "turned it into home—and got very used to drinking" in his pursuit to find "friends" and "people to hang around and laugh with."

"There’s a saying in the rooms: I got sick and tired of being sick and tired," he said about his decision to get sober. "The thing about instant gratification is you don’t really care what’s going to happen right after it—which always led to bigger hangovers or me getting the shakes, and having to drink to get rid of the shakes, and that vicious cycle. I was in a position, when I quit, where I had to be hospitalized one way or the other."

Goodman went on to say that he grew "tired of it" and wanted it to stop. He recalled "realizing how selfish it made me," noting he "had a lot of catching up to do" in terms of maturity, as he "was delaying my maturation by drinking."

"I was overlooking real life," he said. "And it was great to see there was a life where I didn’t have to use anything to enjoy it."

The "The Big Lebowski" actor has spoken about his weight loss journey in the past, telling The Rolling Stone in 2023 that he began incorporating boxing and daily walks into his routine.

He shared at the time that his routine included "just an hour, hour and a half of hitting the mitts, hitting the bags, learning footwork."

"I dug it. Yeah. Nobody’s going to get hurt, but it’s just hitting the mitts and trying to learn," he told the outlet. "I never got good enough where I would trust myself to spar because once I get whacked in the face, I don’t know if I wouldn’t lose it."

Goodman rose to fame playing the Conner family patriarch, Dan Conner, for nine seasons during the original run of "Roseanne." He later reprised the role in the 2018 reboot, and again in the spin-off show, "The Conners."

Gabriel Luna teases 'shifting perspectives' in 'The Last of Us' season 3 as filming continues

21 October 2026 at 15:05

A star of "The Last of Us" is shining a light on what's coming next.

The hit TV series based on the popular video game saga premiered in January 2023 with Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal leading the way.

Season one received critical acclaim and a significant following as viewers watched Ellie and Joel navigate a post-apocalyptic world.

It was a dark and gritty show that saw the protagonists battle the infected and humans.

"The Last of Us" star shares update on season three.

Unfortunately, season two had a noticeable decline in quality. Outside of maybe two episodes, it felt like the show had lost its edge.

The only reason to believe season three might be positive is that the season two finale indicated the show would focus heavily on Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) moving forward.

Now, star Gabriel Luna is pulling back the curtain on what fans can expect.

"This season has been very interesting in the way that a lot of different perspectives shift. Without saying too much, I think folks that were playing the game are aware of that aspect. I just can’t wait for people to see it. We’re shooting it now. I have a little bit of a break," Luna told Variety in a video shared Tuesday night.

You can watch his full comments below, and let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.

Here's the basic reality of the situation. "The Last of Us" will have a very small window of opportunity to convince fans to continue sticking around.

The Ellie storyline (Ramsey) got so cringe down the stretch. Abby, who killed Joel in season two, is a far more interesting character, and Kaitlyn Dever is simply a much more captivating actress. She's come a long way since season two of "Justified."

Fans are going to punch out quickly if season three doesn't go all in on Abby as the main focus. Not exactly inspired that's what will happen, judging from Luna's comments, but time will tell.

Commanders' Dan Quinn appears to lose track of downs one week after clock debacle – but he has an explanation

20 October 2026 at 12:09

Dan Quinn has a public relations problem right now and at the heart of the issue is some powerful people that are painting him as something of an NFL sideline bungler as the Washington Commanders coach.

That's exactly how he looked in the second quarter of the Monday Night Football game where his team rallied to lose against the San Francisco 49ers.

The problem? Quinn seemed to lose track of the downs in a key second-quarter situation. He seemed to think it was fourth down and called for a field goal when, in fact, his offense had just run a fourth-down play and, not only didn't convert, but also drew a penalty.

NFL'S DUMBEST MOMENT OF WEEK 5 HAD THE COMMANDERS TAKING A TIE MORE OFFENSIVE THAN REDSKINS NICKNAME EVER WAS

So, there was the coach on national television, seemingly calling for his field goal unit to get on the field when his offense had surrendered the football.

And we interrupt this coaching nightmare to say Quinn contends that's not what happened at all. He told reporters a much different version of events after the game.

"No, I definitely knew it was fourth down," the coach said. "We were going for it, and I was, I think with whatever you're referring to, I think it was the illegal shift, there's not a penalty to go for a field goal.

"Like, it's the turnover on downs. Like, I think somebody asked me, 'Can we kick a field goal?' ... I knew what happened. I think I was probably just commenting that I remember, at least on the headset, somebody asked me after an illegal shift, um, like, it was a turnover on downs."

That's an explanation most of the country missed because it happened in Quinn's postgame press conference which wasn't nationally televised.

What many instead will remember was what they saw on TV, which made the coach look bad.

So, if perception is reality, Quinn is going to have to rehabilitate his increasingly tarnished reputation as a sideline game manager.

That's because just last week, Quinn's Commanders utterly embarrassed themselves in how they managed a last-minute situation against the New York Giants, wasting precious seconds, mismanaging the clock and the downs, and settling for a tie when they should have likely won the game.

NFL'S DUMBEST MOMENT OF WEEK 2 GOES TO JETS COACH AARON GLENN WHO PLAYED NOT TO LOSE AT END OF REGULATION

That terrible scenario that doesn't easily fade definitely caused everyone to believe Quinn was at it again on Monday night – messing up again, forgetting that the last play was fourth down instead of third down.

"Field goal," Quinn seemingly said as ABC's cameras caught him and lip readers across the world did their thing.

And then he followed with, "Oh, that was fourth down."

That scene not only played out during the game, but was then discussed at halftime on both the ESPN main broadcast and the Pat McAfee alternate broadcast.

"We found out at halftime Dan Quinn didn't know what down it was," McAfee told his audience. "That's a real problem."

The McAfee crew that featured Dan Orlovsky had some fun with the issue because the former quarterback was yelling for Quinn to kick a field goal on fourth down instead of going for it.

Quinn, they joked, wanted to kick the field goal Orlovsky wanted on fifth down.

"Dan Quinn did not know it's fourth down coming off of last week, and then to go for it and get the penalty," Orlovsky said. "I'm a Dan Quinn guy. But you gotta get the operation better."

This leaves Quinn in a rough spot.

He's probably going to have to explain what happened to Commanders' owner Josh Harris because last week opened the door to everyone believing the coach is indeed capable of making a boneheaded mistake.

The question now is whether everyone, including Harris, believes Quinn's explanation or they believe the lip-readers more.

Veteran CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour announces exit from network, will go off the air next June

20 October 2026 at 00:00

Veteran CNN International anchor Christiane Amanpour announced Monday she's leaving the network next summer after more than four decades at the network.

"After more than 43 years at CNN, Christiane has decided that the time is right to begin a new chapter," CNN CEO Mark Thompson told staffers in a memo. "Early in 2027, she will scale back her CNN International show, ‘Amanpour,’ to once a week. The program will conclude in May, and she will leave CNN at the end of June."

"Christiane has thought carefully about this decision, and she and I have been discussing it for some months. Like so many CNNers who will hear the news today, I’m very sorry to see her go, but I’ve come to accept that this is the right time for her, both personally and professionally," Thompson wrote.

CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR POINTS TO 'HEMORRHAGING' AT CBS TO WARN OF DAVID ELLISON'S POTENTIAL TAKEOVER AT CNN

Amanpour thanked her viewers and alluded to the "pressures" she and her CNN colleagues face during an on-air address.

"Now, you know I've always been fiercely independent, and I will continue to be that for you for as long as I am here and beyond," Amanpour said. "That's especially important today as we face unprecedented pressures from all sides, political, financial and also from the rising dangers in the field. I'll always be rooting for CNN maintaining its history of independent journalism."

"Remember: always be truthful, not neutral," she also said in a written statement.

NEW CNN BOSS MARK THOMPSON SUPPORTIVE OF CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR AS LEFT-WING ANCHOR LAUNCHES WEEKEND SHOW

The announcement came as a shock to CNN staffers. One called her CNN's "reigning titan." Another described themselves as a "Christiane loyalist" and called her "the heart and soul of this company," but admitted her stature in journalism can continue without CNN.

"She has the power to chart her own course. Yes, she is synonymous with a brand, but she is also a bigger than the brand," the CNN staffer told Fox News Digital.

While the 68-year-old journalist is revered among her CNN colleagues and members of the liberal media, she has her critics as well. As she referenced in her statement, Amanpour rejects the notion of neutrality when it comes to reporting, insisting the truth should remain the north star.

"Both-siderism — on the one hand, on the other hand — is not always objectivity. It does not get you to the truth," Amanpour told graduates at the Columbia Journalism School in 2023. "Drawing false, moral or factual equivalence is neither objective or truthful. Objectivity is our golden rule. And it is in weighing all the sides and all the evidence hearing everyone reporting everything, but not rushing to equate them when there is no equating and look at the damage that that has done in the climate debate, in the political arena and in the field of battle."

CNN'S CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR CALLS OUT BOSS CHRIS LICHT, OFFERS STUNNING REBUKE OF TRUMP TOWN HALL

Her coverage of the Israel-Hamas war and her past commentary have also raised eyebrows. Amanpour claimed in October 2023, just weeks after the terrorist attack on Israel, "the rest of the world" agreed with Jordanian Queen Rania Al Abdullah's complaint that the Western world shows more support for Israel than the Palestinians. She also reported that third-party negotiators were trying to implement a "hostage release on both sides," implying Israel, too, is keeping civilian hostages and not just the Hamas terrorists. Earlier in the year, she was forced to apologize after she claimed the murder of an Israeli rabbi's family was the result of a "shootout."

In November 2020, she was condemned by the Israeli government and the Anti-Defamation League for comparing the Trump presidency to Kristallnacht, known as the "Night of Broken Glass" when Nazis terrorized Jews throughout Germany and Austria, resulting in at least 91 deaths and 7,500 Jewish businesses vandalized during the Holocaust. Amanpour walked back her comments following the intense backlash.

Amanpour's forthcoming exit from CNN marks the first major journalist set to leave the network under its new corporate ownership. Skydance CEO and Paramount owner David Ellison recently closed on his $111 billion purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery, merging two legacy Hollywood studios as well as several television networks including CNN and CBS under Skydance.

While there's been no indication her decision was tied to Ellison's takeover of the network, Amanpour isn't shy to publicly challenge her bosses, most notably Thompson's predecessor Chris Licht, for airing the now-infamous Trump town hall in 2023. Earlier this year, Amanpour expressed concern about Ellison owning CNN over how he's handled CBS News since he bought Paramount and installed Bari Weiss as its editor-in-chief.

"I’m concerned based on what’s happened to the other things that he’s taken over already, like CBS News, right?" Amanpour said in May. "I mean, do I have to list what’s happening there? I mean, hemorrhaging viewers, probably hemorrhaging money, this ideological realignment of CBS and the destruction, potentially, of ‘60 Minutes.’"
