Trump Calls For FCC to Investigate NBC's Kristen Welker

1 September 2026 at 13:03

President Trump said NBC host Kristen Welker "will be reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment" for "purposeful inaccuracy" on Sunday after she said he had "mixed results" with candidates he's endorsed in primary elections.

Key Quotes: The Meet the Press host said during a live broadcast for a local DC affiliate that Trump "is going to loom large over these midterms." She added, "He, of course, has endorsed a slate of candidates in the primaries. He's had some mixed results." Trump claimed his endorsements "stand at 100% for the U.S. Senate, and 98% for the U.S. House, recently and over the longterm." He added, "The Press is a Disgrace to our Nation, and I hope that Chairman Brendan Carr, and the fine people of his Commission, will take this Threat to our Country very seriously." On Monday, NBC told several news outlets, "Kristen is one of the best in the business and we stand by her."

For Context: According to Ballotpedia, so far in 2026 primary elections, President Trump has a 96% success rate. Last week, a USA Today (Lean Left bias) data analysis reached a similar conclusion, and a Fox News (Right) analysis found Trump had a 100% Senate success rate and 98% House success rate. Earlier in August, NBC News (Lean Left) published an analysis that said Trump's endorsement record had "taken a notable hit" in August. Fox News noted that for something to be qualified as "news distortion," FCC policy requires proof that the report was "deliberately distorted."

FCC Context: Brendan Carr, the head of the FCC, was appointed by Trump in 2017 and served as one of the FCC's Republican commissioners during the Biden administration until Trump made him chairman after his 2024 presidential victory. In March, Carr threatened not to renew several news broadcasters' licenses unless they "correct[ed] course" on their coverage of the Iran war. On August 18, Disney, the parent of ABC News (Lean Left) and ESPN (Lean Left), sued the FCC for reviewing its broadcast licenses two years before their expiration.

Previous Tiff: In June, Trump abruptly walked out of a Meet the Press interview with Welker after the two got into a disagreement about the integrity of the 2020 presidential election and California's recent elections. At the time, Trump said, "It was raining and it was with NBC fake news. And because it was raining, I got a little bit angry at them." Welker said she spoke with Trump afterward and that they "both acknowledged the complications during the interview posed by the rain."

Florida Officials Locate 163 Missing Children in 5-Day Operation

1 September 2026 at 13:03

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) announced 163 missing children have been located across the state in what officials called "one of the largest child-recovery operations in American history." The story was primarily covered by local outlets.

The Details: The children were found through Operation Statewide Shield, a 5-day operation that took place from Aug. 17 to 21. Officials said the children ranged from 2 months to 17-years-old and reportedly experienced "various levels of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or exposure to other criminal activity." According to the FDLE, the operation also resulted in additional locations and recoveries in six states, one US territory and 12 countries, however these numbers weren't shared. Fox News (Right bias) reported that three men have been arrested so far.

Where They Were Found: According to the press release, officials found 41 children in Miami, 32 in Jacksonville, 21 in Orlando, 12 in Fort Myers, 8 in Pensacola, and 3 in the Tallahassee region. Some of the countries where other children were found include Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominica, Finland, Ghana, Guatemala, Italy and Jamaica.

Other Recent Operations: In August, Arkansas state police announced they found eight missing or endangered children during a multi-agency operation. Law enforcement officials in Massachusetts also announced a recovery of 48 missing children in August after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while investigating kidnappings, child exploitation, human trafficking and other related criminal offense cases.

How the Media Covered It: The story was covered primarily by Florida local media, with additional coverage from Fox News, People Magazine (Lean Left) and Patch (Center). These outlets all covered the findings similarly, reporting on the press release announcement and including quotes from law enforcement. Fox News reported on the identities, backgrounds and charges of the men arrested. Fox also highlighted the work of different law enforcement entities involved. It and People wrote that the FDLE carried out the operation by following the structure of past operations in Florida, with Fox specifically mentioning operations by the US Marshals. Florida's WFLA (Center) included statements from a press conference where law enforcement noted circumstances that drive some children to run away and end up "in the hands of evil."

John Galliano Exhibition at Met Museum Canceled After Backlash Over Antisemitic Comments

1 September 2026 at 13:03

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced with fashion designer John Galliano that the Met Gala theme and corresponding museum exhibition in his honor will be cancelled after backlash against Galliano's comments regarding the Jewish community. Outlets across the political spectrum acknowledged the controversial nature of honoring Galliano, though some outlets also wrestled with his iconic status within the fashion industry.

The Details: The Met posted the joint announcement on its website, including a statement from the exhibit's curator, saying, "I believe deeply in the responsibility of museums to examine difficult histories with rigor, candor, and care. I also recognize the pain and concern this exhibition has caused. After extensive discussion, I support the decision not to proceed." Galliano wrote, "I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it. I understand that meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition, or a single public gesture." Galliano would have been only the third living designer to have his work honored by the Gala in its 78-year history.

For Context: Galliano rose to prominence when he served as the creative director of Givenchy, then Christian Dior, and finally Maison Margiela between 1995 and 2024. He was convicted of committing an antisemitic hate crime in France in 2011 after a video went viral of him saying to Jewish patrons at a restaurant, "I love Hitler. People like you would be dead today. Your mothers, your forefathers would be f*cking gassed and f*cking dead." In another incident, Galliano used profanities to insult a couple's Jewish and Asian ethnicities before standing up and announcing, "I am the designer John Galliano." Galliano alleged later that he did not remember either incident due to his addictions to alcohol, Valium, and sleep medication.

How the Media Covered It: Outlets on the right split between highlighting supporters of Galliano and criticizing his reportedly antisemitic history. New York Post (Right bias) wrote that Anna Wintour, the primary organizer of the Gala and global editorial director of Vogue, "issued a fawning statement supporting convicted antisemite pal designer John Galliano." Wintour said, "John's decision that the exhibition devoted to his work should not take place at this time is very courageous and a measure of the man he is." Before the cancellation, a National Review Opinion (Right) piece argued that The Met's decision to honor Galliano suggested that antisemitism "appears to be fine for the Met and the fashion world." New York Times (Lean Left) reported that the plan to honor Galliano with both the exhibit and the Met Gala "risked placing the museum in the position of seeming to sanctify Galliano during an event that has become the Super Bowl of glamour." It also noted that because the Met receives taxpayer money from the city of New York, "ties to the city made its decision to honor Galliano a political issue." BBC (Center) noted that some still regard Galliano as "one of the greatest fashion designers" and that he "returned to the fashion industry following his conviction."

Maduro Appears to Flash Peace Sign from Prison in First Photos Since His Capture

1 September 2026 at 13:03

Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro appeared to share the first photos of himself since his arrest in January, via an ambiguously-perceived X thread posted on Sunday.

The Full Post: Maduro titled the thread, "A Small Gift of Love and Hope," showcasing two images – dated June 25th – of the former leader holding up peace signs with a smile. It stated the following, translated from Spanish:

I send these photos as a small gift to all my grandsons and granddaughters, to the boys and girls, and to all the noble people who love us.

I want you to know that we stand firm, with our hearts full of your love, that love that reaches us transformed into prayer, into constant action, into solidarity and true support. Infinite thanks for every word, for every gesture, for every blessing.

Enjoy this small gift with joy and hope. [Former Venezuelan First Lady] Cilia and I embrace you forever, with our souls devoted to you and with our faith in God intact.

As the Apostle Paul says: "But in all these things we obtain a wide victory, thanks to the one who loved us" (Rom 8:37). We will remain strong, serene, and confident: God is with us. God will provide. Venezuela will be reborn. Blessings.

Maduro's X account had otherwise remained active with ample "#FreeCilia" and "#FreeMaduro" content, and his biography still referred to him as Venezuela's president until 2031, as of Monday afternoon.

How The Media Covered It: Many social media commentators were skeptical about the post as a whole, noting several oddities in its content. Some asserted that the images must have been developed with artificial intelligence, pointing out Maduro's shoelaces – an accessory prohibited from prisons. Others ignored the post's specific content and instead touted their general support or disdain for the ousted leader and his administration.

RELATED: How Do Venezuelans Feel About Maduro's Capture? | AllSides

News outlets across the political spectrum noted Maduro's apparent weight-loss, though Washington Examiner (Lean Right bias) said he "appeared to be in good spirits." The outlet emphasized charges against Maduro and his wife as "a decadeslong conspiracy to flood the United States with cocaine." It noted, "The US and dozens of other countries stopped recognizing him as the country's legitimate leader following the 2018 election."

Outlets across the spectrum also criticized the timing of Maduro's post and its disalignment with when the photos were supposedly captured. CBS (Lean Left) highlighted, "The message was posted two days after his successor, interim President Delcy Rodriguez, announced a 'historic' oil agreement" that would give the US majority control over about 60 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves.

RELATED: Trump Calls Venezuela Oil Agreement the 'Biggest Oil Deal in World History' | AllSides

For Context: Maduro declared himself winner of Venezuela's presidential election in July 2024, without publicly disclosing vote counts. He then swore in to his third six-year term in January 2025, despite widespread reports of voter fraud. In doing so, he faced increased sanctions from the US, Britain, and the European Union; the US also offered $25 million for Maduro's arrest. In January 2026, US military forces succeeded in arresting Maduro and his wife, charging the leaders with drug trafficking and firearms offenses and incarcerating them in a New York prison. The trial is set for June 1, 2027, and both defendants are expected to maintain their not-guilty plea.

Germany: Syrian clan boss with 32 children earns €100,000 from taxpayers every year

1 September 2026 at 14:15

A Syrian refugee residing in the German city of Leipzig has drawn widespread public attention following revelations regarding the extensive state financial support directed to his massive household, alongside an established pattern of criminal behavior among several of his adult sons, including offenses that resulted in the deaths of multiple victims.

The case highlights the enormous costs of mass immigration in Germany and how many migrants have found creative ways to game the welfare system for their benefit.

According to data cited from Saxony’s Ministry of the Interior, the Syrian patriarch maintains a clan consisting of three wives married under Islamic custom, 32 children, and 25 grandchildren. State child support payments generated by the family structure have approached roughly €100,000 each year. Even with five offspring having reached adulthood, annual disbursements for the remaining 27 minor children still total approximately €84,000, according to Hungarian outlet Mandiner.

Family is closely tied to organized crime

Beyond the financial aspect, state law enforcement authorities have closely observed the family clan network, noting that approximately two-thirds of its members have prior criminal records. While the identity of the family’s head remains undisclosed under privacy regulations, judicial records outline a history of serious offenses involving his adult sons.

The most prominent case involves 21-year-old Bilal A., who drove a high-performance Mercedes without a driver’s license in March 2023. He struck a group of people near Eilenburg, killing four individuals before fleeing the scene unharmed. Although a juvenile court handed down a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence, he remained free pending an appeal, during which time authorities arrested him for driving illegally a second time.

Jan Siebenhüner, a lawyer representing victims’ families, stated that the convict “never showed remorse.” The elder brothers, Mohamed and Rami, are also well known to police for their criminal history. Mohamed received a four-and-a-half-year prison term for participating in an assault on a streetcar passenger and arranging a deal involving nearly five kilograms of methamphetamine in 2022. Rami faces charges spanning violent crime, narcotics distribution, and fraudulent welfare claims linked to employment at the family-operated “Golden Lion” establishment, which authorities later shut down after a drug raid.

The family uses the German legal system to avoid deportation

Addressing the legal barriers preventing the deportation of convicted family members, attorney Siebenhüner pointed out that clan members systematically insulate themselves through naturalization and family expansion.

“Article six of the Family Protection Act is a very effective weapon,” the lawyer noted, explaining that if a family already has children, it cannot be separated and minors cannot be expelled under any circumstances.

Bilal A. entered Germany as an unaccompanied minor in 2015 to join his father. Despite his convictions, his official refugee protection remains active throughout the ongoing judicial appeal, as confirmed by provincial immigration office spokesperson Mandy Peschang. Additionally, multiple court proceedings against members of the family were ultimately dismissed after key witnesses failed to appear during trials.

Remix News has reported on such cases extensively in the past, involving large criminal clan networks and the costs they impose on German society, both financially and in terms of security, including in other cities like Stuttgart.

Other cases highlight how some migrants use fake paternity claims to obtain huge amounts of public money while sometimes claiming paternity of two dozen or more children. This practice is particularly common from sub-Saharan African men.

Spain: Judge frees Moroccan illegal migrant who police officers caught raping a young woman on Valencia beach

1 September 2026 at 12:16

A 27-year-old Moroccan construction worker in an irregular immigration situation in Spain was released from custody on Monday after being caught in the act of raping a 22-year-old woman on Valencia’s Malvarrosa beach. The duty judge cited the victim’s failure to appear in court to formalize a complaint as the reason for granting him provisional liberty — a Spanish procedural requirement that is relatively unusual compared with many other Western countries.

The incident took place around 6:45 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, near the Akuarela night club. According to Spanish media reports drawing on police sources, the young woman had been in the sea and was lying on the sand when the man approached her. He initially made complimentary remarks before suddenly lunging at her, violently tearing off her dress and forcing penetrative sex while covering her mouth with his hand to stifle her screams. She resisted and cried for help.

A passerby walking along the shoreline spotted the assault from a distance and alerted authorities. Four officers from the Valencia Local Police’s Security, Support and Prevention Unit (USAP), two of them in plain clothes, were already patrolling nearby, according to Spanish news outlet OKDiaro.

They heard the screams and arrived quickly. The suspect tried to flee across the sand. Officers caught him after a short chase. He resisted arrest and punched one officer several times in the face, causing injuries that required medical attention. The officers handcuffed him and handed him over to the National Police. The victim’s mobile phone, found nearby, was also recovered.

Several reports noted the victim was in a state of intoxication, with one account describing her as having left a nearby nightclub for fresh air. Police later found her showing clear signs of alcohol consumption. She was taken to Hospital La Fe, where she received gynecological care and gave an initial statement to officers from the gender-violence victim assistance unit.

The man, identified as a 27-year-old Moroccan construction worker living in Spain without legal papers, was charged with sexual assault involving penetration and assault on an agent of authority. Authorities have confirmed his irregular status.

On Monday, the duty magistrate of the Violence Against Women section of Valencia’s Court of First Instance ordered his provisional release. The decision, taken in agreement with the public prosecutor, followed the police’s inability to locate the victim so she could appear and ratify a formal complaint.

Spain has some rather unusual rules in regards to this criminal charge. Under Article 191 of the Spanish Penal Code, a complaint from an adult victim is required to pursue sexual offense of this type. Other European nations, like France and Germany, do not require a victim to file a criminal complaint to move forward with criminal proceedings.

Remarkably, even in a case where the woman gave a police statement about the rape and the fact that officers caught the man in the middle of penetrative rape, authorities still released the suspect.

The court opened preliminary proceedings and instructed police to continue searching for the woman. Officials said her situation could change immediately if she is found and decides to proceed. The assault on the police officer is being handled separately and can still be pursued criminally.

Meanwhile, the case has drawn attention on social media due to the man being released within hours and the unique procedural requirements involved in the case.

Will an AfD victory turn into defeat?

1 September 2026 at 09:49

A first-place finish for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the upcoming Saxony-Anhalt elections on Sept. 6 is almost assured. The party is expected to score at least 40 percent of the vote, enabling it to outperform all other parties by a wide margin. Anything less than an absolute majority, which would require around 43 percent or higher, will be seen as a defeat. However, for the AfD’s long-term prospects, this “defeat” may indeed be the best outcome for the party.

Should the AfD win control of all of Saxony-Anhalt, it would be its first time in power, and suddenly, it would have to show results, including managing budgets, dealing with administrative constraints, wrestling with state-level legal limits, and facing potential crises. Left-wing parties, along with establishment parties like the Christian Democrats (CDU), can still put up major roadblocks that will stymie the AfD’s effectiveness to govern even at the state level.

With power comes scrutiny and potentially scandal. Any false moves and the AfD’s mishaps could be amplified to a disproportionate level by a press friendly to the left-wing and establishment German parties.

If the AfD falls just short of an absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt, the CDU would be forced to form a ridiculous and complex multi-party coalition with parties it should not realistically ever partner with, including the Left Party and BSW, making it appear as if it were some kind of cartel player ooking to do anything to stay in power. In fact, this could create a severe internal crisis for the CDU, which officially maintains an incompatibility resolution banning formal cooperation with both the AfD and The Left. Remarkably, Merz is already talking about cooperation with the Left Party, a position that no doubt many CDU voters would balk at.

In such a scenario, the AfD’s chances at obtaining federal power could only be boosted. There are already some reports that many in the CDU privately want an AfD victory.

Saxony-Anhalt is also one of the smallest states in Germany and federal and EU rules still govern much of the actions the AfD would be able to take, making the party look weak and ineffectual. It is worth looking at the individual member states within the EU, where the leaders of entire countries, like prime ministers like Giorgia Meloni, are effectively blocked from a range of policies, including strict immigration enforcement and deportation. Courts, EU policies, and treaty conventions appear to turn conservatives into mush.

At the individual state level, the AfD will have even less power. The AfD could still fall back on the argument that there is little it can do at the state level, but voters are not very receptive to such arguments. Voters typically punish any sign of weakness. It is never enough for a political party to say: “We cannot do this because of XYZ.” Voters only see “we cannot do this.”

The AfD cannot suddenly turn on the taps for cheap Russian energy, it cannot deport illegal migrants with ease, and it cannot implement an economic turnaround policy that will rejuvenate an eastern region that continues to struggle. That would all require serious federal power. Even then, there are powerful constraints in place.

Those on the right are notorious for promoting “victory through defeat” – and lots of defeat. It could even be labeled an “accelerationist” strategy. It is valid to criticize this approach, but losing does have its time and place.

The AfD can still benefit from victory

Of course, an AfD victory is not without its merits. It is worth evaluating the benefits while being realistic about their limitations.

While a victory and the arduous nature of governing could puncture the mystique of the AfD for many voters, it would also normalize the party in the eyes of Germans. The AfD would in effect be governing an entire state on its own, calling its own shots in education, industry, and security. All the credit for any successes goes directly to the party. Even if the AfD fails to enact many of its reforms, the sky will not fall either. Saxony-Anhalt will not unleash pogroms against migrants and life will mostly continue as normal.

Still, the risks are high for the AfD. The common thread among voters is extremely high dissatisfaction with the ruling parties, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and business-as-usual politics, which all the other parties represent to varying degrees. Critics of the AfD claim the party is merely a “protest party” that voters are supporting only due to the disastrous policies of the current government. The reality is that those “disastrous policies” are core policies built into the operating systems of these parties, which call for more mass immigration, more deindustrialization, and less security for citizens.

At between 28 to 29 percent of the vote, the AfD has long since catapulted out of the realm of mere “protest party” and now represents a serious political force — a reckoning for the establishment parties and left-wing cartels that have long dominated German politics. Nevertheless, if the CDU and SPD, for example, were more competent, there is no doubt that the AfD’s support would take a hit. There are still protest voters backing the AfD who can switch their allegiance quickly.

The question is now how high the AfD can go at the federal level. What is the party’s limit and what is truly holding it back from breaking the 30-35 percent mark in federal polling? The AfD’s sister party in Austria, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), has long since achieved such numbers in terms of support.

The AfD still has plenty of growth that it can achieve in conservative Western states like Bavaria, but it will never obtain an absolute majority at the federal level. Forming a coalition with the CDU is still the party’s long-term goal. If the CDU is forced to form an absurd coalition in Saxony-Anhalt, it could push the CDU to be more open to an AfD alliance in the future at the federal level, as a choir of dissenting voices grow within the CDU over the plethora of left-wing alliances being formed across Germany.

The AfD ultimately needs to make a major breakthrough in federal elections, where the true power lies. Saxony-Anhalt is currently the only state in Germany where AfD has a chance of governing with an absolute majority. Perhaps in the future, Saxony may also fall into this category, but at the most, that would then be two states. The path to power does not lie through governing states, they can only be a stepping stone at the very most.

Trump Calls Venezuela Oil Agreement the 'Biggest Oil Deal in World History'

31 August 2026 at 13:02

Announcing an oil agreement between the US and Venezuela, President Donald Trump is calling the deal "the biggest oil deal in world history."

Trump on Truth Social: On his platform Truth Social, Trump said the oil agreement will "more than double" American oil reserves, boost oil supply and lower prices at the gas pump. The agreement, he said, means the US will have majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela at "no cost" to American taxpayers.

"The United States of America has just entered into an Agreement with the Country of Venezuela on, THE BIGGEST OIL DEAL IN WORLD HISTORY!" Trump wrote. He added that, at his direction, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth worked closely with Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodriguez and private businesses to secure majority US control of the reserves.

Venezuela's Response: According to multiple media reports, Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodríguez welcomed the agreement, saying it could help revive the country's oil industry and generate more than $209 billion in tax revenue. The agreement involves developing 17 oil fields with a proven potential of 65 billion barrels, according to the Venezuelan government. Posting on X, Rubio said "this deal will bring nearly $100 billion in private investment, support thousands of high-paying jobs, and drive the reconstruction of Venezuela's economy."

The Bigger Picture: Trump's announcement comes after weeks of negotiations over an agreement that would give a US-backed private venture long-term access to Venezuelan oil fields. Reuters (Center) reported that the deal would give the US majority control of the reserves through a new venture, while Axios (Lean Left) reported that the arrangement would involve US equity and access to oil at cost.

Right Coverage: Fox Business (Lean Right) presented the agreement in a largely positive tone, emphasizing Trump and Rubio's claims that it will increase US oil supplies, lower gas prices and bring major investment to Venezuela. The report appeared to give little attention to potential questions or criticism surrounding the agreement.

X Says Chinese Bot Accounts Are Pushing Back Against Data Centers

31 August 2026 at 13:02

Social media network X said Chinese bot accounts on its platform are trying to decrease support for the construction of new data centers.

The Details: X's Safety team said it identified a Chinese bot farm of 200,000 "inauthentic" accounts — 200 of which posted "in a manner that could manipulate a legitimate debate about American AI and energy policy." X said it remains "committed to maintaining an open and authentic platform where people debate topics of public interest" and that it would suspend accounts in violation of its Authenticity policy.

Previously: In June, OpenAI and other pro-AI groups claimed Chinese and other foreign-based accounts were posting on social media to sway public opinion toward opposing data centers. Notably, similar to OpenAI, the parent of ChatGPT, X has its own AI chatbot named Grok.

Politics: Data centers have become an increasingly controversial and relevant voter issue as the 2026 midterm elections approach. Two weeks ago, Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro ordered new restrictions on data center construction in the state, a move that media across the spectrum framed as a significant pivot from his stance on the issue earlier this year. Last week, The Washington Post (Lean Left bias) published an analysis that found candidates in both parties have shifted sharply against data centers over the past six months, with Democratic candidates making the move first. Recent polling from Quinnipiac University found data centers to be of greater concern to Pennsylvania Democratic voters than Republican ones.

RELATED: The Insight: The Data Center Dilemma | AllSides

Media Bias: Outlets on the right have offered more favorable coverage of data center construction over the past year, often framing the subject as tangential to a race for AI dominance against China. Notably, both Wall Street Journal Opinion (Lean Right) and Libertarian outlet Reason (Center) have published a significant amount of pro-data center commentary. Last week, AllSides reported that the Tucker Carlson (Right) podcast platformed false claims about data centers suggesting they raised energy prices and risked blackouts in a small Pennsylvania town.

RELATED: The Wall Street Journal Has a Strong Pro-Data Center Bias | AllSides

How The Media Covered It: X's claims were covered more by outlets on the right. Several outlets such as Newsweek (Center), Deseret News (Center), and Washington Free Beacon (Lean Right) framed their coverage less about X's claims and more as a broader fight against China to prevent it from influencing American public opinion on data centers.

Peter Kafka of Business Insider (Lean Left) published an opinion that argued, "It is certainly plausible that China has tried to use social media to convince Americans to hate data centers… But 'China tried to exploit opposition to data centers' is different from 'China created that opposition' — or even from 'China meaningfully amplified it.'" He added, "The bigger picture is that a report like this seems unlikely to turn people who don't like data centers into people who like data centers. More likely, it will just end up preaching to the choir."

Israeli Minister Ben Gvir Says He's 'Pleased' With Worsening Conditions for Palestinian Prisoners Ahead of Elections

31 August 2026 at 13:02

Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir posted a video on Sunday where female Palestinian prisoners complained about worsening conditions, and he took direct responsibility for them, adding that he was "pleased."

Key Exchange: A prisoner, whose face is blurred, said, "This is our third day without showering. We are not receiving medical treatment, and our clothes are not clean." Ben-Gvir replied, "The good conditions in the prisons are over. This is the current situation, and I am directly responsible for everything. I am pleased with these conditions."

Key Context: The Times of Israel (Center) used charge language like "mocking" and "berated" to describe Ben Gvir's comments, but prominently noted that one of the prisoners said she's part of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and that Ben Gvir reminded them of "far harsher conditions" Israeli hostages in Gaza faced. Alongside the video on X, Ben Gvir wrote, "The 'whining' of the female terrorists about the conditions in the prisons doesn't work on me. Our hostages had no conditions at all. I will continue to lead a policy of the absolute minimum!"

Hamas Statement: The Jerusalem Post (Center) prominently noted in its coverage that Hamas condemned Ben Gvir's comments as reflecting the "extent of fascism and political and moral depravity, and exposes the vengeful, terrorist mindset" Israel and its leaders have. Hamas said, "We warn of the danger of continuing to turn the occupation's prisons into open arenas for violations, humiliation, threats, torture, and murder, and of exploiting the occupation's leaders the suffering of our prisoners as cheap electoral propaganda."

RELATED: Former Israeli PM Naftali Bennett Challenges Netanyahu With 'Together' Coalition | AllSides

Political Context: Israel will hold parliamentary elections on October 27, and last week Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Ben Gvir and fellow right-winger Bezalel Smotrich to unite their parties since Smotrich's party is currently polling below the threshold of votes needed to enter parliament. On Sunday, Ben Gvir posted an AI-generated political ad video captioned "We promised - we delivered!" that depicts himself ordering overweight prisoners into a prison where they then become skinny. Qatari outlet Al Jazeera (Lean Left) noted that since he took office in 2022, Ben Gvir has pushed for tougher conditions for Palestinian prisoners."

Previously: On July 31, Ben Gvir posted a video where a female Palestinian prisoner complained about the quality of food and water in prison, and he replied, "The food should not be good. This is not a hotel." Two weeks ago, a video surfaced from a podcast where Ben Gvir said he believed Israel should be killing "30 to 40" Palestinians in Gaza every night. In June, Ben Gvir made headlines for calling for a genocide against Israel's neighbor Lebanon.

President Donald Trump on Monday warned Americans that they risk becoming “backwards and poor” unless they allow Big Tech companies to build artificial intelligence data centers in their communities.

In a social media post, the president expressed indignation that any town or city wouldn’t welcome data centers, which have drawn nationwide opposition for generating pollution and jacking up utility bills.

“The only reason that communities throughout the USA should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor,” Trump wrote. “If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign.”

In reality, AI data centers create very few jobs once they are completed, as most of their functions are fully automated.

Trump then said that Americans “will only have yourselves to blame” if they “kill the Golden Goose” that is AI data centers.

“China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement,” Trump wrote. “Actually, they can’t believe it is happening!”

Building AI data centers has become massively unpopular throughout the US.

A poll conducted by Embold Research and published by Heatmap Pro earlier this month shows that 75% of Americans now oppose building AI data centers in their area, including 61% registering strong opposition.

While Republicans polled in the survey were more supportive of data centers than Democrats and independent voters, it nonetheless found that opposition among Republicans outweighed support by 43 points.

Polling analyst G. Elliott Morris marveled at how politically tone deaf the president sounds when it comes to data centers, commenting that “Donald Trump is actively trying to help as many Democratic senators as possible get elected.”

Longtime GOP operative Frank Luntz similarly noted data centers’ unpopularity, citing a recent Gallup poll showing 63% of Republican voters oppose having one of the facilities built in their communities.

“We’re about to see whether President Trump can sway those voters to support them, as he’s done on many issues before,” Luntz remarked.

Democratic US Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed wasted no time tying the president’s position on data centers to his opponent, Republican Mike Rogers.

“Make no mistake—this is Mike Rogers’ position on data centers,” wrote El-Sayed. “He’s got up to $2.6 million invested in companies cashing in on the data center boom, all while Michiganders watch their utility bills soar. You can’t trust a word out of Mike’s mouth because he’s only out for himself, for Donald Trump, and for Big Tech—not Michigan.”

Faiz Shakir, a longtime adviser to US Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), observed that Trump is merely “sharing the perspective of Wall Street and Big Tech” and is showing “no interest… in grappling with the mass revolt across American communities, or to learn anything from them.”

Screenwriter David Simon, creator of the acclaimed television series The Wire, accused Trump of brazenly lying about data centers’ economic benefits.

“If data centers are a geographic benefit to communities, you can be sure they’d be siting and building them in affluent and politically connected environs,” wrote Simon. “Curiously, they’re dumped in poorer, less influential places. Go fucking figure.”

Republican Kentucky state Rep. Savannah Maddox took issue with the president disparaging communities opposed to data centers, which include many of the rural communities that voted for him in three presidential elections.

“Rural doesn’t mean ‘backwards and poor’ and development doesn’t always equate to being ‘successful and rich,’” wrote Maddox. “President Trump wouldn’t be president without the rural voters who inhabit America’s heartland. It is not wrong of us to question the sudden and wide-scale effort to convert arable land into data centers. We are not stupid for wanting to protect our rural way of life.”

The Last Event in the Life of Jesus that Caused His Execution – The Coming Noahide Laws

by Brian Shilhavy

I previously wrote about how a man born blind who was healed by Jesus and received his sight, resulted in the formerly blind man being kicked out of the church.

Not only was he kicked out of the church, but everyone else who believed that he received his sight through Jesus was also threatened with being kicked out of the church, because this healing was not approved by the religious and health authorities, and it was done on the “Sabbath” which was illegal. See:

When Believing in Jesus Christ Gets You Kicked Out of the Church

This forced Jesus and his disciples to leave the area and hide, as the Jews looked for ways to arrest Jesus.

However, Jesus returned to the area later, in an event that sealed his fate among the Satanic Jews, where he actually brought a man back to life after he had been dead for four days.

After learning that his friend Lazarus was sick, Jesus purposely stayed behind to allow him to die, and then only decided to go see his sisters after he knew that Lazarus was already laid into a tomb. So this was clearly a pre-planned event by Jesus, knowing full well what the consequences would be.

His disciples were not too eager to follow him back to Judea:

Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days.

Then he said to his disciples,

“Let us go back to Judea.”

“But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?”

(John 11:6-8)

Jesus assured them that this was all part of God’s plan, but they were still hesitant, and literally thought they were all going to be killed by the Jews by following Jesus back to Judea.

Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples,

“Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

(John 11:16)

The Event that Rocked the Jewish Nation and Sealed the Fate of Jesus Christ to be Executed

In 1896, artist Henry Ossawa Tanner brought Lazarus to the forefront of popular culture in Paris, entering Resurrection of Lazarus in the Paris Salon, winning a medal. It was so respected that the French government bought the painting. Source.

With the Satanic Jews already very upset and very nervous about the fact that Jesus had healed a man born blind, Jesus now takes his ministry a step even further, by daring to raise a dead man from his grave, demonstrating his power over not only the ruling Jews, but over Satan himself.

John starts the story with Jesus meeting the two sisters outside of town (he did not dare to enter the town yet, because many Jews were there and it would have been too dangerous).

On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.

Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

Jesus said to her,

“Your brother will rise again.”

Martha answered,

“I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Jesus said to her,

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

“Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ (Messiah), the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside.

“The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.”

When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.

Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. (John 11:17-30)

With the two sisters of Lazarus now coming outside the town to meet him, Jesus had the crowd on his side, and proceeded to do what he had traveled there to do.

When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said,

“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.

“Where have you laid him?” he asked.

“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

Jesus wept.

Then the Jews said,

“See how he loved him!”

But some of them said,

“Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.

“Take away the stone,” he said.

“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”

Then Jesus said,

“Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

So they took away the stone.

Then Jesus looked up and said,

“Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice,

“Lazarus, come out!”

The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them,

“Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

(John 11:31-44)

To the people who knew and loved the family of Lazarus, this was the most amazing miracle that had ever been done in the history of the world, and the news spread fast!

To the ruling Satanic Jews, this was the worst sin that Jesus had committed to date, because it completely destroyed their power base in Satan’s world order.

So they immediately began to make plans to execute him, thinking that his execution would eliminate their problems.

Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him.

But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.

“What are we accomplishing?” they asked.

“Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up,

“You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”

He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.

So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the Jews. Instead he withdrew to a region near the desert, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

(John 11:45-54)

The Noahide Laws – The Satanic Jews’ Attempt to Carry On What Their Jewish Forefathers Started

Jesus is still a threat to Satan’s world order today, and the Satanic Jews have continued to try and stop people from believing in and following Jesus since the First Century.

They failed miserably in the First Century, because even though they were afraid that the Romans would come and take over their city if they allowed Jesus to live, after they executed Jesus, Jesus just rose from the dead and continued his ministry in his resurrected state, and then the Romans came anyway in 70 AD and destroyed their temple and their city, ending the Jewish nation.

But in 1948, after World War II, the Zionist allies began their reign of terror on the Palestinians living in the area that was formerly Israel, and setup their own Jewish nation that today is still practicing genocide against the Palestinian people, while also attacking Lebanon and Iran, all with U.S. weapons in the current Trump Zionist regime.

There is no doubt that this was the main reason that Trump was put back in power in 2025, and then began the Iran War.

The Satanic Jews use the Noahide Laws to try and solidify their power worldwide, promoting the Jews as the “chosen people” at the expense of everyone else, and making it a sin, punishable by death, to believe that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah.

I published an article in 2024 explaining that the Zionists in the House of Representatives under Trump have been trying to implement the Noahide Laws in the U.S. disguised as “Antisemitism” bills. See:

Exposing the Antisemitism Noahide Laws that Criminalize Belief in Jesus Christ as the Jewish Messiah Punishable by Execution

And now, in November of this year (2026), the “most committed Noahide leaders from around the globe will gather in Jerusalem — to formally establish the World Noahide Movement.”

They have put up an official website that describes, for the first time in public to my knowledge, just what the Noahide Laws are.

From their website:

Why This? Why Now?

For two thousand years, the words of Israel’s prophets waited. We waited.

The people of Israel returned home. The State of Israel was built. And now, quietly, tens of thousands of non-Jews on multiple continents are choosing to live by the universal moral laws given at Sinai to all humanity. They are called Noahides . They are awakening. They are organizing. And for the first time in history, they have an address: Jerusalem .

This November, the most committed Noahide leaders from around the globe will gather in Jerusalem — to formally establish the World Noahide Movement.

The question is not whether this will happen. It’s happening. The question is who will be there when it does.

You Will See With Your Own Eyes That You Are Not Alone.

For most Noahides, the journey is often lonely. You study. You speak to the Creator. You attend online classes.

This congress will change all this.

For four days, you will live alongside fellow Noahides from six continents. So far we have registrants from: Bolivia, France, Germany, the United States, India, Israel, Georgia, Canada, the Netherlands, Mexico, Chile, the United Kingdom, Senegal, Switzerland, New Zealand, South Africa, and Lithuania.

You arrive feeling isolated. You leave knowing you are part of an international family.

Source.

Will the Noahide Laws be Implemented in the U.S.?

I personally highly doubt that the Noahide Laws will ever be implemented in the U.S.

The Zionists chose Donald Trump to try and implement this, and that was their biggest mistake, in my opinion.

Because now the whole world knows that Trump worked together with Jeffrey Epstein and is also a pedophile just like everyone else in Epstein’s network.

And the most damaging parts of the “Epstein Files” have still not been released, and are allegedly being used to leverage Trump.

But this does not mean that the Zionist religious fanatics, most of whom are Evangelical Christians, are no longer a danger to the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Israel still has the “Samson Option” where they could try to destroy the Middle East through nuclear warfare, especially since they have been unable to defeat Iran. See:

Is Israel Preparing Nuclear Bombs for Iran According to “The Samson Option”?

There are also rumors that false flag attacks could happen in the U.S. with events even more devastating than 9/11, where Trump could theoretically try to stop the midterm elections, and implement something like martial law which could potentially include the Noahide Laws. See:

Is World War III About to Break Out? Talk of Los Angeles False Flag Attack Increases

Whatever does happen, there is one thing I am quite sure about: Satan will fail, just as he has historically when trying to stop people from believing in and following the true Jewish Messiah, Jesus Christ.

However, if Satan’s worldly throne currently is in the United States, the revived Roman Empire, Americans could suffer the most when God deals his next blow against the Satanic world system.

This is not consistent with the false, Dispensationalist Evangelical views of end time prophecies, and they will be the most surprised that things did not go their way after all, as they suffer the consequences of God’s judgment against this nation instead of being “raptured” out of the world to be spared the devastation that is coming.

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

By their fruit you will recognize them.

Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?

Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’

Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7:15-23)

When Israeli forces besieged Al-Shifa Hospital in November 2023, eight premature babies in incubators were evacuated to Egypt under fire. One of them was Joud. His mother, Fatima Dakkeh, spent the next two years and eight months searching for him and fighting to bring him home.

Fatima tells the story of giving birth just months before October 7, losing contact with her son during the first Israeli raid on Al-Shifa, learning a year later that he was alive in Egypt, and a bittersweet reunion with a child who no longer recognized her.

According to the International Rescue Committee, at least 17,000 children in Gaza are unaccompanied or separated from their parents. For many families, there will be no reunion.

Narrator:

Al-Shifa hospital is the largest medical complex in Gaza. Since October 7, it’s been repeatedly raided, occupied and targeted by Israeli forces. Over the course of the Genocide, hundreds were killed in and around the building and the hospital itself was completely destroyed.

In November 2023, under Israeli fire, 8 premature babies in incubators were hurriedly evacuated to Egypt. Joud was one of those babies.

Fatima Dakkeh:

I gave birth to my son, Joud, in July. Joud needed neonatal care at Al-Shifa Hospital. We placed him in the neonatal unit, but then the war started and Joud was there in the hospital. We couldn’t get in touch with Joud because of the shelling and the war.

Narrator:

Fatima Dakkeh and her son Joud have been unable to have a regular mother-son relationship. Joud was born in Gaza just a few months before October 7th 2023 and so, their story has been shaped by war, displacement and separation. Shaped that is, by Israel’s war on Gaza.

Fatima Dakkeh:

When we tried to get to the hospital to get Joud, we weren’t able to get to him and take him out, because of the situation—things had gotten really bad. There was a lot of shelling and there were airstrikes and quadcopters. We planned to go back another day to get Joud, once the situation calms down. But the situation just kept getting worse. The Israelis entered Al-Shifa Hospital and occupied it— that was the first invasion of Al-Shifa Hospital, and my son was inside.

About a year later, I found out my son was in Egypt. I mean, I didn’t give up; I kept going to hospitals, I went to the Red Cross and places like that to search for news about my son, no one could help me. I went to a doctor I know. I told him my story, he said, “I’ll try to get in touch with your son and see where he is.” Thank God, he was the one who discovered my son was in Egypt. After a few days, they sent us pictures of my son, and we found out he was OK. Thank God. They knew he was our son through my name—they had my name on file. We started communicating with him more through my sister-in-law—my sister-in-law in Egypt. We told her the story, and of course she didn’t hesitate; she visited him in hospital, sent us pictures and reassured us about him, thank God.

Honestly, I was happy and upset at the same time because my son was in Egypt, if he would have been here in Gaza he would have suffered a lot. We were starved, even nappies were cut off. Most children were using scraps of cloth as nappies. And milk too, was cut off—we had no milk at all in northern Gaza. I said to myself thank God my son is in a better place than Gaza. But at the same time, I was upset that my son was far from me. I would see mothers playing with their kids, dressing them, carrying them—and I would feel these feelings. I would miss my son. I wished my son was with me. At the same time, I’d look at my situation—how we’re living, in tents, in all this difficulty. I’d say to myself, hopefully he will return to us in a better situation, there will be a ceasefire and we will make up for the days we lost.

I had lost hope that he would return. With the crossing closed and the Israelis were not letting people return. When they first told us he was returning, I was shocked. My husband and I both. We were surprised—how could he come back just like that, overnight? He’s just going to come back, all of a sudden, after we’d lost hope all these years. I was overjoyed with the news that I would see my son again, it was the best news. When we went to the hospital to collect him, it took a really long time for them to bring him to us—many hours. With each passing hour, I would get more and more excited: about seeing him and about how I would greet him. I mean it was really hard, but at the same time, the moment when I saw him was really beautiful.

Yeh, honestly, when I first saw my son, he wouldn’t come to me; he’d cry and avoid me. He would go to his dad before me. he didn’t want to come to me, so I was afraid that he’d stay that way uncomfortable around us And afraid of living with us, and afraid of the situation we’re in— that he wouldn’t accept us Thank God, little by little, he started to accept us.

Narrator:

According to estimates by the International Rescue Committee, 20,000 children are still living separated from their parents in Gaza. Fatima was reunited with Joud and though their separation which lasted 2 years and 8 months impacted both mother and child, they are now reunited. As for the thousands of other survivors in Gaza, for many there will be no reunion.

John Michell: The Forgotten Genius Who Predicted Black Holes

31 August 2026 at 16:16

More than a century before Albert Einstein revolutionized physics with his theory of general relativity, and nearly two centuries before astronomers accepted the existence of black holes, an English clergyman and scientist named John Michell proposed a startling idea. In 1783, Michell suggested that some stars might possess such immense gravity that even light could not escape from them. These invisible objects, which he called "dark stars," bear a remarkable resemblance to what we now know as black holes.

Germany: Afghan migrant convicted of raping teen gets probation

31 August 2026 at 14:41

The Hamburg Regional Court has sentenced a 34-year-old Afghan migrant to two years’ probation for rape and several counts of aggravated assault against his former partner, an 18-year-old girl. German social media accounts have already sharply criticized the sentence, arguing it is another example of lenient sentencing in the face of serious crimes.

While the defendant initially admitted only to striking her with his hand, he ultimately confessed to the remaining charges. The court convicted him of four counts of assault, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of rape. As a condition of his probation, he must pay an additional €3,000 in compensation after paying another €2,000 in damages to the victim before the verdict.

Judge Malte Wellhausen detailed that the six offenses occurred between autumn 2016 and spring 2018. The trial faced substantial procedural delays, leading the court to count four months of the sentence of the Afghan man, who works in IT, as already served.

The court found the Afghan man physically assaulted his former girlfriend on five separate occasions, including an incident where he used a leather belt and another instance where he choked her to the point of respiratory distress. The rape took place in October 2016, approximately ten years ago.

The defendant first met the 18-year-old high school graduate from Lower Saxony through an online platform. Physical abuse began only months after their initial meeting, starting when he struck her face. When the young woman reacted with fear and tears, the defendant remarked, “That wasn’t even hard.”

Routine physical assaults followed over minor issues, as well as disputes stemming from the victim’s parents opposing her relationship with the Afghan-born defendant.

The sexual assault occurred in his bedroom while both were in bed, leaving the victim with physical pain and bleeding. Despite the nature of the assault, she did not initially identify the incident as rape. Over the following months, the physical abuse persisted, including the incident involving the leather belt while the woman reportedly blamed herself for the incidents, according to German newspaper Welt.

In August 2017, after overhearing her covertly speaking with a friend on the phone, the defendant struck her face, causing her nose to bleed, and choked her violently by the neck. Rather than reaching out for assistance, the victim suffered severe distress, blamed herself, and engaged in self-harm.

During a subsequent trip to the United States, the defendant proposed to her, and she accepted out of fear. She eventually managed to break away from the relationship in 2018 by relocating her life to Denmark.

The criminal investigation began after the woman noticed a missing person report that featured a photograph of a garden in the Poppenbüttel district of Hamburg, where she had previously resided with the defendant. Concerned for the safety of the woman shown in the report, she eventually spoke with police officers and detailed the abuse she had endured, prompting authorities to open a criminal case.

Judicial findings later confirmed that the disappearance of the other woman was entirely unrelated to the defendant. Authorities proceeded with the investigation despite the victim’s reluctance to participate from Denmark. Further delays arose due to pandemic border closures and the illness of an expert witness, pushing the formal filing of charges to 2024.

The victim in the case tried to avoid the trial altogether and only joined in for video testimony after facing potential prosecution. The court ultimately found her account credible due to its memory detail and complete lack of malicious intent toward the accused.

Defense lawyer Claudia Krüger was positive about the ruling, calling it “a judgment with a sense of proportion. I am very satisfied.“

While the defense had argued for a suspended sentence, prosecutors had requested a prison term of three years and two months. The defense won out but the sentence is subject to appeal.

France: African migrant arrested for beating and raping 17-year-old girl

31 August 2026 at 10:37

A 23-year-old Guinean national already under an order to leave France (QQTF) is in pre-trial detention after being accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in foster care in Évreux on the evening of July 26. The details of this case are only now being reported, a month later.

The teenager, who lives in a foster home and was receiving psychological care, encountered the man near the city’s cathedral. Prosecutors say he forced her into his car, issued threats, paused at a kebab shop to eat, and then took her to his apartment close to the cathedral. Once inside, he is alleged to have slapped her, pushed her onto the bed and raped her as she cried out, according to French newspaper Paris-Normandie.

A roommate heard the screams. Afraid of confronting the resident himself, he called the police. Officers arrived to find the suspect insisting that “everything is fine.” From the rear of the apartment, they could still hear the girl sobbing. They entered immediately.

A subsequent medical examination recorded ten days of temporary incapacity for the victim. The suspect, who holds a permanent bodywork job in the Paris region and has no previous convictions, denied any rape allegations. He told investigators the girl had consented. Prosecutors rejected his request for release, pointing to the victim’s vulnerability, the risk that he might pressure her, and his irregular immigration status. A deportation order against him had already been issued but never carried out.

The man remains in custody.

Climate of concern: The changing face of social movements in North Africa

The profile of social activism in North Africa is changing. Young people in the region shifted away from demanding regime change after the thwarted hopes of the 2011 Arab uprisings and the 2019 Hirak movement in Algeria. Now, they tend to seek practical improvements in their social and economic conditions rather than wholesale political reform.

Many of these new social movements focus on environmental concerns, and increasingly on the impact of global warming. North Africa is among the regions in the world most affected by climate change. But its countries are also some of the most promising sites for renewable energy generation, given their abundant sunshine and proximity to the European market. Activists have targeted some renewables projects, testifying to a feeling that authorities are failing to ensure energy transitions are fair and meaningful.

These trends in activism in North Africa match a recent turn in European engagement with the region, away from support for political reform and towards socioeconomic issues. This includes cooperation on clean energy projects. But Europeans should bear in mind that cooperation with North African governments on projects that ignore local interests will fall short of the objective of promoting greater opportunity and long-term stability in the region. This underlines the importance of including local businesses and civil society representatives in initiatives from the very start.

Changing social movements

The Arab uprisings and Hirak protests were driven in large part by social and economic concerns, and sought a political remedy by calling for a change of government. But hopes for better politics have since foundered across North Africa. The region’s protests and social movements now tend to focus on practical and often locally based demands for a more effective state and better services for communities. The 2025 Gen Z protests in Morocco, for example, began as a response to failings in maternity health care before swelling into wider calls for social justice. The shift to more issue-based activism reflects North Africans’ disappointment in past attempts at political reform as well as long-simmering social tensions. These include anger at poor governance and the strain rapid urbanisation puts on jobs and housing.

But climate change is also encroaching ever more on North Africans’ quality of life. Historically a water-scarce region, North Africa is now experiencing extreme temperatures, rising sea levels, drought and desertification. Once-fertile agricultural land is becoming barren, and flooding from extreme weather events exacerbates the problems for farmers and food supplies. Climate change is also contributing to power cuts and water shortages, as well as catastrophes from flash floods to wildfires. One opinion poll in 2024 showed that one in six people in North Africa had experienced harm from climate change in the previous two years (or knew somebody who had), and that 71% of North Africans saw it as a threat.

With governments often failing to implement policies to mitigate climate impacts, social movements have adopted an environmental focus. These movements sometimes blend protest with community self-help initiatives, and are often local rather than national. Their less explicitly political nature brings them a measure of tolerance by authorities, as does the fact that the movements often pursue environmental objectives that governments also embrace. But activists still face similar restrictions to all civil society movements in North Africa, at times drawing surveillance and repression.

Changing the environment

Such climate-related movements have sprung up across North Africa. In Morocco, a group of Tangier-based NGOs and unions halted a building development that would have involved deforestation, and they now publish an annual report on local environmental issues. Youth for Climate Tunisia trains young people to mobilise on climate issues and organises digital campaigns. The Egyptian group Greenish promotes climate education and capacity building for local communities. Algeria has several community-based groups that work on improving access to water and countering desertification.

Other groups focus on wider environmental concerns. Egypt’s VeryNile pioneered efforts to work with local fishers to collect and recycle plastic pollution from the Nile. In Tunisia, local protests against the impact of phosphate processing in Gabès snowballed after a series of toxic gas leaks in October 2025, becoming a mass movement that continues almost a year later.

But North African social movements also mobilise when green transitions disadvantage local communities and marginalised groups. As North African countries increasingly seek foreign investment in renewable energy projects, some communities worry that land and water resources will be diverted to benefit wealthy elites and foreign investors. In Tunisia, solar projects have aroused local opposition because they take land out of community use and reinforce regional inequalities. In Morocco, solar megaprojects such as the plant in Ouarzazate have prompted anger in nearby communities because of the amount of water they consume.

Changing European policy

One thing that unites these disparate movements is that activists seek concrete improvements in quality of life, as well as a bigger role in determining their countries’ futures. This aligns with an increasing sense in Europe that the best way for the EU and member states to promote rights and opportunity in North Africa is through a focus on socioeconomic development.

As the EU’s 2025 Pact for the Mediterranean showed, European policymakers aim to cooperate with North African partners on tangible initiatives that match local government priorities, including in green energy and water management. But the environment-focused social movements should remind European policymakers that working only with governments is not enough to ensure progress on economic and social rights, as I argued in an ECFR policy brief last year. The EU must frame its projects in a way that gives local populations as much agency as possible, by breaking down barriers for small businesses and including civil society in project design and planning.

The EU must also ensure that the projects it supports genuinely offer mutual benefit. In climate policy, the pact’s logic of “a partnership of equals” means European support for renewable energy projects including solar and wind power and the production of green hydrogen. Such projects would then supply clean energy for Europe and promote North African development as well as reduce local energy costs. In turn, greater opportunities and lower prices in the region could help promote the stability that European policymakers also seek.

But not all climate and environmental projects meet these goals—as the local criticisms show. To fulfil the promise of clean energy projects for both sides, Europeans must complement their investment in power generation with other measures to limit environmental trade-offs and to help benefits to flow to local communities. These should include infrastructure development and technology transfer to build up a local clean energy ecosystem. That is the best way for Europe to help ensure that the aspirations expressed in North African environmental movements are met.
