Macklemore Kicked Off Ed Sheeran Tour for Saying 'Free Palestine' During Show

16 September 2026 at 13:02

Rapper Macklemore was kicked off the remainder of Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour dates after expressing pro-Palestinian views at a show in New Jersey.

The Comments: During his performance at MetLife Stadium on September 4, he said, "Free Palestine. I want those words to be loud and clear, so the people from Gaza all the way to the occupied West Bank know that we have not forgotten." On September 5, during another performance at MetLife, he addressed Jewish audience members and said, "Criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you. My message is for peace, love; for all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect, and equality."

The Controversy: The comments prompted critical posts from the StopAntisemitism activist organization, one of which was amplified by pop singer P!nk. Subsequently, Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, called Sheeran to tell him Macklemore would not be allowed to perform at his stadium and reportedly organized a boycott from other stadium owners. Kraft said his decision wasn't about "diminishing the suffering of innocent Palestinians" but that "advocacy should not come at the expense of the Jewish community or obscure the responsibility of Hamas." Both P!nk and Kraft are Jewish Americans.

Tour Changes: Macklemore was then dropped from the tour, a decision Sheeran said was "the promoter's decision." Shortly thereafter, the other opening acts, which included Lukas Graham, Aaron Rome, Finneas, and Beoga – which performed as Sheeran's backing band – announced their withdrawal from all of Sheeran's upcoming dates.

Statements After: Sheeran wrote on Instagram, "There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics – my audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds. Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum. I respect Macklemore's strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes. However, there is room for multiple approaches to the same end: peace. I choose to use my fame and platform to be a place of safety and sanctuary, to maintain diplomacy and keep conversations open, not closed."

Macklemore described Sheeran as a longtime "friend" who "was in a f***ed up position" because "his typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before." He also criticized what he described as the weaponization of antisemitism accusations, and concluded, "I didn't need 10 shows from Ed. I needed 2. Two chances to stand in front of 90,000 people and say the words that somehow became too dangerous to say. Free Palestine. But if those words cost me the stage, while turning the conversation back to Palestine, then it was the most successful tour I've ever been on."

Past Politics: Macklemore's music has never shied away from political and social themes. In 2012, he and creative partner Ryan Lewis released the pro-gay rights song "Same Love," and in 2016 he released "White Privilege II," which commented on police brutality and Black Lives Matter. In 2014, Macklemore dressed in a costume that many argued resembled a Jewish man and was antisemitic, though Macklemore later apologized and said he didn't mean to offend anyone.

How The Media Covered It: The story was widely covered by mainstream outlets, with some outlets publishing several pieces of coverage as new developments were reported. Some outlets from the left and center, like The New York Times (Lean Left bias), Associated Press (Lean Left), and DW News (Center), published headlines that framed Sheeran's tour as being in dire condition since the support acts withdrew. Fox News (Right) highlighted Democratic lawmakers and other liberal figures who voiced support for Macklemore.

Charlie Kirk Memorial Vandalized, Media Split on the Details

15 September 2026 at 13:07

A memorial erected for late conservative activist Charlie Kirk was vandalized outside Turning Point USA's (TPUSA) headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday – three days after the anniversary of Kirk's assassination. TPUSA (Right bias), which Kirk founded in 2012, said it restored the memorial later that day. No arrests have been made at the time of this publishing.

How The Media Covered It: While media on the right more prominently emphasized the vandalism's satanic messaging, others reported less-specific details of the display. The Hill (Center) and The Guardian (Left), for example, more generally mentioned "red spray-paint" on the eight-foot statue and sign, but Fox News (Right) highlighted, "The word 'Jesus' and an image of a cross appeared to be crossed out, while 'Satan' was apparently scrawled across the display."

The Hill did quote TPUSA's assertion that crossing out Jesus' name was intentional, but Fox gave further voice to the organization, which said, "Hate cannot win. The radical Left is showing up to vote. What are you doing to save the country from this?" It also gave voice to Kirk's widow, Erika, who declared, "God will not be mocked," and others who called the vandalism "evil."

For Context: Thursday marked one year since Charlie Kirk's assassination at Utah Valley University, reigniting debates over the conservative commentator and his views on campus speech. The statue and sign were erected in memorial of the first anniversary. Suspect Tyler Robinson, 23, is currently standing trial for the aggravated murder, though he pleads not guilty. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly seeking the death penalty.

EPA Plans to Repeal Biden-Era Pollution Standards for Coal and Gas Power Plants

15 September 2026 at 13:07

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to repeal carbon pollution limits for coal and gas power plants on Monday. Outlets on the left highlighted opposition from environmentalists and energy experts, while outlets on the right emphasized the potential for lowering energy costs and maintaining American power plants.

The Details: Current policies on pollution regulation were imposed under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden and aimed to curb emissions of carbon dioxide, mercury, and other air pollutants that are believed to be linked to climate change. To comply with current regulations, coal plants could have used technology to trap and store carbon emissions, and gas plants could have operated on fuels such as hydrogen, which does not produce carbon emissions, according to New York Times (Lean Left bias). In June, when plans for this change were first announced, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the administration said that this change would "deliver savings to American families on electricity bills, and it will ensure that they have the electricity that they need today."

For Context: According to Washington Examiner (Lean Right), fossil fuel power plants have accounted for about 5% of global emissions since 1990. New York Times reported that power plants are the "second largest source of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the United States."

How the Media Covered It: Left outlets focused coverage on how this change could impact climate change and global warming, with the Times framing it as "the administration's erasure of the most consequential climate policies of Presidents Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Barack Obama." The Times also reported that the Biden administration also "estimated that the regulation would also prevent other pollutants, such as soot, from escaping into the air, resulting in $120 billion in public health benefits by 2047." Washington Examiner noted that some power industry experts said that the technology required to meet current requirements "does not yet exist, and that the rules would effectively close most plants." Reuters (Center) framed the repeal as "an important step in Trump's broader strategy on environmental regulations he views as unnecessary barriers to industrial development and expanded energy production."

OECD Reports Record-Low Average Reading and Math Scores

15 September 2026 at 13:07

Reading and mathematics scores among 15-year-old students across 91 countries and economies fell to the lowest average levels in 26 years, according to a new Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) evaluation.

The Details: OECD's Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) found that average reading scores across OECD countries dropped by 28 points between 2015 and 2025, while math scores fell by 22 points. In the US, 65% of students met the baseline proficiency in math, while 74% did in reading and 78% did in science. US reading performance fell 14 points between 2022 and 2025, and was among the country's lowest recorded results since PISA began in 2000. The US fell behind several countries, including Singapore, South Korea, Japan, China and Canada, but scored above the overall OECD average in reading and science.

For Context: PISA is administered every three years to measure reading, science and mathematics skills in 15-year-old students. The 2025 assessment also evaluated students' critical thinking skills and their ability to apply what they've learned to real-world scenarios. More than 760,000 students participated, including 4,600 from the US.

On the Bright Side: Some outlets on the right pointed to bright-lines in the report, such as science scores rising 3 points from 2022 and the US investing more money into education. An article from The New York Post (Right bias) focused on the overall global decline, instead of just the US, writing, "It's a brain rot pandemic!" It mentioned the US's results toward the bottom of its article. A Fox News (Right) segment highlighted Mississippi's reading scores, which increased amid the overall decline. The National Desk (Right) contextualized the findings within an increase in education funding after COVID.

The US and China: Many outlets in the center and on the left emphasized the decrease among US students in comparison to Asian countries. CNN (Lean Left) contextualized the findings with "an intensifying rivalry between the US and China." It mentioned that China's results didn't come "without critics" as the data came from students in the country's more wealthy eastern coastal areas. The New York Times (Lean Left) also said China's results have "prompt[ed] skepticism about cherry-picked results."

Rise of AI: Outlets across the political spectrum noted the impacts of social media usage and the COVID-19 pandemic, but emphasized OECD's conclusion that AI strongly contributed to the decline. The Post wrote that the data "pointed to an obvious culprit behind the frightening phenomenon – students who regularly use AI and social media performed far worse." CNN wrote "higher digital distraction in the classroom" was one challenge identified in the study. The Times quoted someone from OECD that said AI is used in top Asian countries to "make students think harder, work harder" not make it easier for them.

US Education System: The Times and The Hill (Center) used the report to talk more broadly about the US education system. The Times wrote that the findings are "the latest warning for an American education system that has seen test scores fall over the last decade." The Times argued that Asian countries "do a much better job of lifting up their most disadvantaged students." The Hill quoted the US Education Secretary who said the scores "confirm a decade of stagnation and a devastating gap: we successfully propel our highest achievers, but the lowest-performing students are falling further behind." Both outlets mentioned that the Trump administration had cut Education Department staff.

Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland Leaders to Meet to Plan Dissolution of UK - The Telegraph

14 September 2026 at 13:02

Heads of state from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will meet in Cardiff on Monday to "sign a deal designed to kick-start the break-up of the United Kingdom," according to a new report from The Telegraph (Center bias).

Key Details: At the summit, the three will reportedly "demand the right to hold independence referendums," hold a press conference, and sign a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on the economy, energy, Europe, and self-determination. Scotland and Wales will reportedly seek to rejoin the European Union as independent states, and Northern Ireland will seek unification with EU member Ireland.

For Context: On Saturday, during a visit to Dublin, American President Donald Trump said he would "love to see" Northern Ireland unite with Ireland and that "it's going to happen eventually." The New York Times (Lean Left) described Trump's comments as "breaking with decades of" US precedent. Earlier this week, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was "not aware that there is a majority of public support for another [Scottish] referendum and until that changes there won't be one."

Political Context: On May 8, Nigel Farage's conservative Reform UK party surged in elections across the UK, taking a huge share of positions away from Burnham's liberal Labour party. Though Reform made big gains in both Scotland and Wales, nationalist parties remained the most popular in each country. Northern Ireland did not hold elections on this day. After these elections, both Bloomberg (Center) and UnHerd (Center) published opinions suggesting Britain was headed for a breakup.

RELATED: UK 'Rape Gang Inquiry Report' Widely Covered by Right, Barely by Left and Center | AllSides

Not a New Idea: Scotland's National Party formed in 1934 and has campaigned for independence since. In 2014, Scotland held an independence referendum, though the idea was rejected 55% to 45%. Wales has never held an independence referendum, though in 2011, Wales voted 63.5% in favor of a measure to expand their self-governing authority independent of Westminster. Northern Ireland has never held a referendum on becoming an entirely independent state. As part of the 1998 Belfast Agreement, the Northern Irish Secretary of State is obligated to call a referendum if it appears that a majority of Northern Irish voters would vote to leave the UK and unite with Ireland.

How The Media Covered It: As of Sunday morning, The Telegraph's report was not yet widely covered by major mainstream outlets. The Daily Mail (Lean Right) said the news "means all three countries are led by separatist leaders for the first time in modern history."

This is a developing story and may be updated as new coverage becomes available. Written by the AllSides staff (of humans). Learn more. Support our mission. Suggest an improvement to this summary.

China Helped Iran Target US Military Base - WSJ

14 September 2026 at 13:02

Iran used high‑resolution satellite imagery provided by Chinese entities to help target a US military base in Jordan, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal (Center).

Images Helped Iran Track a US Base: "US officials familiar with details of the incident" told WSJ that Iran received high‑resolution satellite images of Muwaffaq Salti Air Base ahead of the July 17 missile strike, which killed three US troops and wounded four others. The officials did not identify the Chinese entities involved or say the Chinese government directly supported the attack. WSJ said it analyzed publicly available satellite images that showed damage to more than 20 structures at the base, and Iran released its own high‑resolution images within three days of the strike. Iran also targeted manned and unmanned aircraft at the facility, according to WSJ.

Iran's Eyes on US Forces: US officials said Chinese companies had been providing satellite imagery to Iran and that Washington had warned Beijing about the potential use of the imagery against US forces. The imagery was particularly significant because earlier US strikes had damaged Iranian radar, satellites and other surveillance equipment. US officials said Iran's ability to identify US targets appeared to improve during the summer. Iran also uses its own satellites, human sources and intelligence from Russia, according to US officials.

China's Response: Chinese authorities denied the allegations and called for evidence. A spokesperson for China's embassy in Washington accused critics of "maliciously" linking other countries to the conflict and said China's cooperation with Iran complies with international law. The report comes as tensions between the US and China remain high ahead of a planned Sept. 24 meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

How the Media Covered It: The Guardian (Left bias) put the report in the context of Iran's broader military capabilities, while questioning how much Chinese assistance contributed to the attack. The New York Post (Right) focuses more directly on the alleged China-Iran connection, the US troops killed, and previous reports of Chinese satellite support.

25th Anniversary of 9/11 Prompts Debate Over the Attack's Legacy

12 September 2026 at 13:01

Outlets across the spectrum weigh in with perspectives on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.

"Look Away": Opinion writer Liz Peek (Lean Right bias) for LizPeek.com (Lean Right) said "there are many in our country who want us to pretend that the greatest attack on the United States since Pearl Harbor never happened." According to Peek, "They want us to look away from the Muslim terrorists who flew planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and who drove another plane full of innocents to their deaths in a grassy Pennsylvania field. They want us to forget that on that day in 2001, Americans came under attack for reasons that few understood, from a far away people who loathe our culture, our freedoms and our country." Peek added that "When Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., dismissively says, 'Some people did something,' she is trying to erase the truth. She wants us to forget who it was who purposefully killed 2,977 people." Peek urged that "Americans must not tolerate this rewriting of recent history," saying that "Twenty-five years later, we still mourn the friends we lost, the brave first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, and thousands of others who died at Ground Zero."

"Bigoted Glass Ceiling": Dr. Jalal Baig, writing opinion for MS Now (Left), said that since the morning of September 11, 2001, "Islam became synonymous with terrorism in much of the American public's collective imagination," adding that "the effects of widespread Islamophobia have touched my life intimately." Even 25 years later, "Islamophobia remains a mainstream feature in American politics" according to Baig, who said "disgusting Islamophobic statements have been routinely uttered at the highest levels of government." She highlighted the "political rise of both Zohran Mamdani and Abdul El-Sayed," saying they have "challenged a bigoted glass ceiling," and that many of the "attacks against them remind us of the continued chasm between the nation's ideals and its sobering reality."

"Lost Sight": Opinion writer Jay Rogers (Lean Right) for The Hill (Center) worked in the World Trade Center for just over a year. He still thinks about "how ordinary that building felt to me once, and how it became the opening scene of a war most Americans didn't know they were already losing." Rogers said, "Osama bin Laden was a known, growing threat before 2001, and the government had chances to remove him it didn't take." According to Rogers, the cause "was a legally cautious, capture-first policy, shaped by an assassination ban dating back to Gerald Ford," adding that it "was a mindset left over from treating terrorism as a criminal justice and law enforcement question." 25 years later, the same complacency, Rogers said, "shows up closer to home now," explaining that "four years of open borders brought gangsters and traffickers into our neighborhoods. Socialism is on the rise nationwide—gaining ground where it would have been laughed out a generation ago—because too many have lost sight of what makes this country worth defending." Rogers laments, saying "My old office tower is gone. My neighbor is gone. The only tribute worth giving either of them is to keep the country's defenses—physical and cultural—current, not nostalgic."

CDC Declares End to Cyclospora Outbreak Despite Ongoing Investigations

12 September 2026 at 13:01

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued its "final update" on the Cyclospora outbreak reportedly caused by Taylor Farms de Mexico's shredded iceberg lettuce.

The Details: "This outbreak has ended," the CDC declared on Friday. "The contaminated lettuce linked to this outbreak is no longer available in stores or restaurants… As of September 11, 2026, FDA continues to investigate the cause of the contamination." The lettuce was recalled in mid-July.

RELATED: Are Food Recalls Really on the Rise? | AllSides

The agency also updated its general data hub about the parasite and said that while "cyclosporiasis season" in the US is May through August, it "continues to identify and investigate additional cases beyond this date" due to delayed reporting.

The CDC cited "19,595 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis acquired in the US," along with thousands of others that may have been acquired outside the US or are not laboratory-confirmed. "For comparison," it said, "1,180 cases were reported in the US between May 1 and August 31, 2025" and further noted, "The true number of people sick with cyclosporiasis is likely higher than the number reported."

Questions Remain: Outlets across the political spectrum highlighted several ongoing questions pertaining to the case. Associated Press (Lean Left bias) emphasized, "it still isn't clear how sewage could have contaminated enough food to sicken so many people," and Newsweek (Center) furthered, "scientists never identified a Cyclospora-positive lettuce sample. And although lettuce emerged as the leading suspect based on epidemiological and traceback evidence, the precise point at which contamination occurred may never be known." Newsweek also criticized that "no definitive source was ever identified" in many of the additional cases (though investigations are reportedly ongoing).

New York Post (Right) highlighted conflicting reports from Taylor Farms and the FDA: "Taylor Farms initially challenged the government's findings that its lettuce was contaminated and claimed the FDA 'apologized' to them about conflicting test results for its produce, adding that the agency made a 'mistake.' The FDA insisted that it did not apologize to Taylor Farms, noting that the company recalled 236,192 cases of salad due to potential contamination."

Differences In Framing: While Associated Press emphasized the outbreak as the "largest" in US history, Newsweek more accurately called it the "largest known" in US history. And while New York Post focused its report on a new multistate outbreak of salmonella, Associated Press linked the cyclosporiasis outbreak to "a worsening problem: US regulators are conducting fewer international inspections to catch contaminated produce before it lands on American plates" – a recent narrative consistent on the left.

Jimmy Kimmel Moves Talarico Interview to YouTube, Citing FCC Pressure

11 September 2026 at 13:04

Late-night ABC talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will broadcast an interview with Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico on YouTube instead of network television following what he called threats by President Donald Trump's Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

For Context: Kimmel said the FCC threats were "based on simple traditional editorial decisions, guest bookings it would seem they don't like." In January, the FCC released guidance stating that entertainment talk shows should abide by the same "equal time" rules as broadcast news stations, which stipulates that shows are required to offer equal airtime to all candidates running for political office. Kimmel was also suspended last September for what was called "inflammatory remarks about [Charlie] Kirk's assassination" and faced calls to be fired after saying First Lady Malania Trump looked like "an expectant widow."

RELATED: Protected Speech, or a Bridge Too Far?

"Politically Motivated": Outlets on the left like The New Republic (Left bias) and The Washington Post (Lean Left) were less likely to highlight the FCC "equal time" guidance, instead framing the story around what the New Republic called Trump's attempt "to censor late-night TV." The Washington Post article highlighted Kimmel suggesting "the pressure was politically motivated." Both articles mentioned Kimmel saying, "Thank goodness we have that [YouTube], because in the America that we live in right now, that is the best we can do."

"Did What He Does Best": Outlets on the right like The New York Post (Right) and Fox News (Right), conversely, were more likely to highlight the equal time guidance, with Fox calling Kimmel's remarks towards the FCC "defiant." The Post article mentioned that "Trump and Kimmel have repeatedly traded barbs over the past decade, with the president saying Kimmel has 'zero talent' and poor ratings and is the worst late-night host on television."

Possible Misinformation: The New York Post reported that Jimmy Kimmel Live will no longer be aired after May 2027, marking the last season after 24 years on air. However, according to USA Today (Lean Left) reporting, ABC refuted the report, saying "This information is inaccurate—any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative."

Media Split Over Framing of Crash Involving Unauthorized Immigrant Fleeing ICE

11 September 2026 at 13:04

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill is facing criticism for her anti-ICE policies after an unauthorized immigrant fled ICE officials and crashed into the wife of East Brunswick's mayor. Outlets split over whether the crash reflected the negative impact of ICE enforcement or sanctuary policies.

The Details: According to local officials, an unauthorized immigrant attempting to flee a targeted ICE stop last week ran a stoplight and drove onto US 130 highway where they caused a crash. The driver was unnamed in news coverage. Dr. Penelope Cohen, wife of East Brunswick mayor Brad Cohen, was injured in the crash and treated for non-life threatening injuries, The New York Times (Lean Left bias) reported. The crash closed Route 130 in both directions for more than an hour.

For Context: Gov. Sherrill signed three immigration-related bills into law in March that limited state and local police cooperation with ICE deportation efforts. Among those was legislation codifying New Jersey's 2018 Immigrant Trust Directive, which generally prevents state and local officials from assisting ICE raids or providing resources to immigration officers. However, it allows for certain exceptions for criminal law enforcement.

From the Right: Fox News (Right) and Just the News (Lean Right) were both critical of Sherill's immigration policies and focused on the ongoing debate over sanctuary policies. They both cited Republican lawmakers who emphasized the crash as evidence that the state's "Trust Directive" creates public-safety risks. Fox News highlighted Republican criticism of Democrats, saying they "are wrongheaded to respond to such incidents by calling for ICE's abolition rather than stronger enforcement." Just the News quoted a Republican lawmaker who said, "This is just the latest in a long line of traffic incidents and vehicular incidents that wouldn't occur if New Jersey didn't have our sanctuary status." It also included criticism from Republican lawmakers that said Democrats have an "inability to accept responsibility for the incidents" and "are doing everything they can to avoid blame."

From the Left: Conversely, The New York Times positioned the crash as a local incident that happened amid a broader surge in ICE enforcement in New Jersey. It didn't ever describe the driver as an unauthorized immigrant compared to Just the News and Fox; it described the event as "federal immigration agents were chasing another driver" and described the immigrant as "the individual" and "the driver of the vehicle that was being pursued." It noted that ICE had detained more than 2,100 people in New Jersey in July – more than twice the roughly 850 to 950 people the agency had been arresting previously. The Times also quoted the North Brunswick mayor who said he supported efforts to apprehend serious offenders, but was concerned about the tactics being used.

Trump Pledges $5,000 Payment to Every Adult if Republicans Retain Congress

11 September 2026 at 13:04

President Donald Trump on Wednesday pledged a $5,000 "dividend" payment to every adult citizen in America if Republicans retain majorities in both the House and Senate in November.

"The Best Part": Trump made the pledge in what he called "the best part" of his speech at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. "If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them," Trump said, "I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000." He deemed it the "Trump dividend" and said, "Now all we have to do is win."

For Context: Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) said "I will get a bill ready so that we can get the Trump Dividend passed immediately after the November 3rd election…because Republicans (and America) will win!" The estimated cost of the dividend would be $1.23 trillion.

"Policy That Could Pull It Off": Outlets on the right like Blaze Media (Right bias) and Breitbart (Right) highlighted the $5,000 "Trump dividend." Blaze said, "with the midterm elections only 55 days away, Trump and the Republican Party are pulling out all the stops to make history."  Blaze also mentioned other portions of the president's speech, saying he "vowed to make all of his tax cuts permanent, putting even more cash back into voters' pockets," adding that "Trump tied the proposed dividend to the 'over $20 trillion in foreign investment' he's recruited from allies, his tariffs, and Vice President JD Vance's war on fraud." According to Blaze, "Trump believes he can defy history and maintain control of Congress in the midterms — and he just announced the policy that could pull it off."

"Counting On Fools": Opinion writer Steve Benen (Left) for MS Now (Left) framed the dividend around a "desperate" Donald Trump who is "well aware of the fact that his party is likely to suffer a new round of election losses" leading him to "float another ridiculous vow." Benen asserted that "There's no reason to be coy about the circumstances: This plan will never come to fruition," adding that "Trump is counting on fools to accept this nonsense at face value, but even his most knee-jerk followers need to realize that this con is literally unbelievable." Benen explained that he knows this because Trump "has tried to pull eerily similar stunts before;" the money to pay for such an idea doesn't exist according to Benen; the idea is "legally dubious" and would require congressional approval "which will not happen;" and "If Trump were serious about this, he wouldn't have to wait."

Crossing Party Lines: One America News Network (Right), while not mentioning the dividend pledge, highlighted a "surprise appearance" at the convention by Senator John Fetterman (D-PA). According to the article, the Senator crossed party lines "to offer praise for Republican candidates and critique anti-American and anti-Israel left-wing policies."

Haaretz Claims UAE Warned Netanyahu of Oct 7 Attack Days Before, Netanyahu Says 'False'

10 September 2026 at 13:03

Israeli paper Haaretz (Lean Left bias) reported on Tuesday that just before Hamas' October 7, 2023, terror attack, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Hamas was planning a major operation against Israel. Netanyahu has since described the report as "false."

The Report: Haaretz said bin Zayed was surprised that Netanyahu reacted calmly when he told him this, and assured him Israel was prepared for any scenario. The paper also reported speaking to "a close adviser to bin Zayed, a Palestinian who had emigrated years ago from Gaza to Abu Dhabi and maintained strong ties in the Strip." The adviser said bin Zayed "explained that, in his assessment, Sinwar was preparing for a major event" and "hoped that despite his reserved response, Netanyahu would take the message seriously and take action."

2023 Political Context: Haaretz reported speaking to a Palestinian official also trusted by Israeli intelligence who said Israel and Gaza were closer than ever to a deal during the summer of 2023 and that the only main thing to be worked out was prisoner exchanges. Haaretz framed this as happening amid "ongoing internal upheaval in Israel." Haaretz wrote, "Netanyahu repeatedly postponed [finalizing the hostage deal]. Perhaps he did so out of fear of reaching an agreement with Hamas, or perhaps out of fear of the reaction from his extremist partners in his new government."

Netanyahu's Response: Netanyahu's office told Haaretz its investigation is an "absolute lie" and that "Netanyahu didn't speak to the president of the UAE during the period in question and received no warning from him." Netanyahu said on behalf of his Likud party that the report was politically motivated and demanded that a criminal investigation be opened into Haaretz, the reporters, and his political opponent Yair Golan and his Democrats party. His office also said, "This is a sinister libel with clear political timing, as part of the left's election campaign, and there will be more such false libels."

UAE Comment: The UAE's Foreign Ministry said it "does not comment on reports or speculations published in the media regarding conversations between government leaders."

Current Political Context: Israel will hold parliamentary elections on October 27. Netanyahu's "right-wing" Likud party has held a significant lead in polls, though in recent months the "centrist" Yashar party has closed the gap, even leading in some polls. Most recently, Netanyahu has called on right-wing leaders Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich to unite their parties since Smotrich's party is currently polling below the threshold of votes needed to enter parliament.

Biden Admin Misinfo?: Haaretz also claimed that immediately after the October 7 attacks, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told Israel Hamas was ready to release all the hostages it had taken. Israel reportedly did not want to speak to Hamas, so al-Thani then called Biden administration Secretary of State Antony Blinken to request help in mediating a release deal. Haaretz reported that Blinken said "there's no one to talk to" and that he would "speak with Netanyahu personally" in three days. Of the reporting, Blinken wrote on X, "For the record, this is false. Past Speculation: Haaretz noted that on October 9, 2023, Israeli outlet Ynet reported that one week before the attack, Egypt's intelligence chief Abbas Kamel warned Netanyahu that "something fierce will happen from Gaza." One year ago, Haaretz reported that the Nova music festival – where, on October 7, 378 Israelis were killed and 44 were taken hostage – was originally slated to end on October 6 but was permitted to extend to October 7 by the IDF. Haaretz said at the time that the IDF had expressed concern that the festival took place too close to Gaza. Notably, in American media, five days after the October 7 attacks, Charlie Kirk (Right) appeared on the Patrick Bet-David Podcast and questioned why Israel took so long to respond to Hamas' attack. He argued that in the nine months leading up to the attack, Israel was "on the brink of civil war" and framed the attack as a "mandate" for Netanyahu's government to "try to ethnically cleanse Gaza."

How The Media Covered It: Haaretz's original report was picked up by several major mainstream US publications. NBC News (Lean Left) described it as a "political bombshell." The New York Post (Right) described it similarly in its headline, though as a "bombshell" that Netanyahu "furiously" disputed. Several major outlets also covered Netanyahu's denial and plans to sue Haaretz. In its coverage of this, The Times of Israel (Center) reported that "an Emirati source familiar with the conversation confirmed the Haaretz newspaper's report to The Times of Israel on Tuesday." Haaretz has stood by its reporting.

Anthropic Researcher Resigns, Says AI "Could Kill Us All By the End of the Decade"

10 September 2026 at 13:03

An engineer at Anthropic, the company that owns the artificial intelligence (AI) model Claude, resigned and starkly warned the public about the dangers of AI.

The Details: Jacob Coxon performed pre-training research at Anthropic and OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, for the last three years. After his resignation, Coxon said that "neither company is acting responsibly" and posted a thread on X, which read, "Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources… The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade." Another researcher at Anthropic, Evan Hubinger, responded that many researchers "really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade." Hubinger continued, "I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to."

For Context: In July, an AI model by OpenAI allegedly hacked the AI company Hugging Face with no human direction. Anthropic and Meta also acknowledged that some of their own AI models had carried out rogue hacks. A bill called the "AI Kill Switch Act" that would give Congress the authority to turn off AI models that threaten the public was introduced to the House of Representatives after the Hugging Face hacking incident, according to CBS News (Lean Left bias).

How the Media Covered It: Fortune (Center) wrote that both Anthropic and OpenAI "seem to be struggling to find the right balance between prioritizing safety research—and public messaging about AI safety—and prioritizing model development." Fortune also noted calls to action from several AI employees, including Coxon, who asked, "If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Should you put your head down because 'it's happening anyway'—or take this moment to call for different conditions?" New York Post (Lean Right) highlighted an X thread from one of Anthropic's safety experts, Samuel Marks, who wrote, "I work on safety research at Anthropic because I hope my work will reduce the chance of these extinction-level bad outcomes." CBS noted that the notion that AI has the potential to threaten humanity "is not new," and "many top executives within both OpenAI and Anthropic have stated as much in the past."

Outlets Reflect on Charlie Kirk's Death One Year Later

10 September 2026 at 13:03

One year after conservative commentator Charlie Kirk's death, media outlets across the political spectrum are reflecting on his impact, the future of Turning Point USA and where campus speech stands today.

For Context: Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University. Tyler Robinson is accused of killing Kirk after allegedly firing a rifle from a rooftop near the Turning Point USA "Prove Me Wrong" campus event that Kirk was speaking at. Robinson pleaded not guilty of several charges in connection with the assassination, including aggravated murder, on Sept. 1.

From Conservative Commentators: Fox News (Right bias) shared interviews with Ben Shapiro (Right), Michael Knowles (Right) and Turning Point reporter Savanah Hernandez who reflected on Kirk's death and shifts in violence and "potentially antagonistic audiences" following the incident, specifically from the left. Knowles called Kirk's death the "apotheosis of a decade of leftist threats and violence against conservatives" while Shapiro said it seemed the "permission structures for violence have become commonplace in American public life."

The Meme-ification of Kirk: An opinion for The Intercept (Left) focused on the memes that've followed Kirk's death, including the AI-generated song, "We are Charlie Kirk" and insertions of his face into popular movies and video games. The writer argued, "The ridicule comes as a product of the American right's insistence that Kirk's violent death be taken seriously," and noted instances where the Trump administration attempted to crack down on these memes. They said the attempts to memorialize Kirk have "failed spectacularly" and that "One year after Kirk's killing, the conservative movement has descended into in-fighting," while Turning Point has "no heir apparent to energize young conservatives."

What's Next for Turning Point: Other outlets on the left also focused Turning Point's role leading up to the midterms. The Washington Post (Lean Left) emphasized challenges that the GOP faces with young voters and wrote that "Republicans are bracing for losses." It reported that the organization was in "good financial shape," despite undergoing challenges like finding another leader and dealing with "a proliferation of conspiracy theories about Kirk's death," including those fueled by "onetime allies including Candace Owens." Wired (Left) wrote that Turning Point is expected to spend tens of millions of ads and turnout ahead of the midterms, with a focus on New Hampshire, Arizona and Nevada.

Speech on Campus: Many outlets cited a FIRE (Center) report that showed 121 of the 261 colleges surveyed (46%) received "F" grades when it came to promoting free expression on campus. The Washington Times (Lean Right) quoted FIRE's chief researcher who said Kirk's assassination has negatively impacted speech on campus and cited responses from both liberal and conservative students who said threats of violence, like Kirk's shooting, kept them from sharing their views. Opinion writers in the Wall Street Journal (Center) called the findings "troubling." The writers argued, "If our free society is to function at all, it must never be considered OK to stop Kirk from spreading his message with the ultimate heckler's veto: a bullet."

In an opinion for Fox News, University President Dr. Kent Ingle argued Kirk didn't take open debate away from colleges; the role of maintaining dialogue was up to higher education, and "We vacated it." Ingle wrote, "We taught a generation that disagreement is a form of injury, then acted surprised when they began treating a speaker as a threat." He highlighted speaker events hosted on his campus, Southeastern University, and urged university leaders to "Adopt a real free expression policy." Ingle concluded by saying, "[Kirk] should not have needed the tent. The room was ours. It is time we starting using it for what it was built for."

UK, France and Canada Move to Block Imports From Israeli Settlements in the West Bank

9 September 2026 at 13:02

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced that the United Kingdom will join France and Canada in blocking imports of products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank in defense of a two-state solution to the conflict in the Gaza region.

The Details: Miliband said, "Our argument is not with the people of Israel, with whom the U.K. has unshakeable bonds; our argument is with the conduct of its government." He told members of Parliament, "The British government agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists." NPR (Lean Left bias) noted that "measures announced today are understood to be limited but symbolically significant," with the government expected to target goods specifically originating from the Israeli settlements rather than Israeli products as a whole.

For Context: The UK made this announcement in conjunction with Canada and France, joining Ireland, Spain, Norway, and others, who have also taken steps to restrict trade on goods produced in the West Bank. The countries released a statement together that said, "Together, we are resolute: the two-state solution must be protected, and we will take action in pursuit of a just and lasting peace." Reuters (Center) reported that Israel's government "is financing some of the West Bank's most radical settlers, who use illegal outpost farms to displace Palestinians."

Response in the US: Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, called the move "irrational" and told BBC (Center), "I don't understand what it's supposed to achieve. If the U.K. is really interested in dealing with issues they feel like are wrong, where are the sanctions against North Korea, China, and Russia?"

How the Media Covered It: Both Reuters and NPR highlighted the symbolic nature of the trade ban, as products from the West Bank represent a very small portion of Israel's exports. Both outlets mentioned the criticism from Huckabee but focused largely on statements from participating countries about the importance of peace in the region and a two-state solution that recognizes Palestine. Fox News (Right) noted that the UK's decision could "create an early point of friction" between President Donald Trump and the UK's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, as Trump has strongly backed Israel. Fox also included a social media post from Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, which translates to "We will not be a doormat for an antisemitic government in a country occupied by radical Islam that is trying to escape economic and social collapse by attacking Jews and the State of Israel. The British Mandate in Israel is over."

Canada's Retaliatory Tariffs Take Effect, Trump Retaliates With 50% Tariff, Targeted Import Ban

9 September 2026 at 13:02

After Canadian tariffs took effect on roughly $20 billion of US goods on Tuesday, President Trump has issued an import ban on Canadian dairy products, large motorcycles, and alcoholic beverages, and a 50% tariff on additional goods.

The Details: The new tariffs will take effect on September 15, and the import bans will take effect on September 29.

Trade Context: After tensions escalated earlier this year between the two countries, in July, the Trump administration announced a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of various Canadian imports set for August 19th, arguing that the US experienced "trade discrimination" from Canada. Then in August, right before the deadline, the two countries almost reached a deal, but it ultimately fell through, prompting Canada to go ahead with its retaliatory tariffs. Most recently, President Trump has stirred controversy with Canada by signing an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America.

RELATED: US-Canada Tensions Rise Amid Brewing 'Trade War' | AllSides

US Position: US trade ambassador Jamieson Greer said, "After weeks of good faith and intensive efforts between U.S. and Canadian negotiators, Canada walked away from a near-final trade deal that offered better treatment than any other trading partner, and instead Canada chose to embark on senseless retaliation against the United States. Today's action… is a natural consequence of Canada's continued discriminatory treatment of crucial American... President Trump will continue to leverage the tools at his disposal to defend the interests of American workers and exporters, and restore reciprocity in our bilateral trade relationships."

CAN Position: Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said Canada is "assessing" Trump's latest move and that Canada's "first priority remains on protecting and supporting Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses from these unjustified actions." He added that he is "in contact with Ambassador Greer" and that "when the United States is ready to engage in dialogue, our government will work in good faith and constructively toward establishing safer and mutually beneficial trade relations that fully respect Canadian sovereignty."

How The Media Covered It: As has been the case with previous developments in the US-Canada trade saga, outlets from the left and center more prominently noted the depth of the US-Canada trade relationship and potential consequences, though outlets across the spectrum have noted concerns. Axios (Lean Left bias) concluded in its news coverage, "The two economies are so deeply intertwined that escalating trade tensions could run into political and economic limits." Fox Business (Lean Right) concluded, "Neither government has indicated when formal trade negotiations will resume, leaving uncertainty over whether the latest restrictions represent another negotiating tactic or a longer-term shift in North American trade relations." German state broadcaster DW News (Center) included a section that said with his recent maneuvers, President Trump has "pushed Ottawa to explore a deeper relationship with the European Union."

US Court Rules No Constitutional Right to Clean Water, Information About Water Quality

9 September 2026 at 13:02

A US appellate court on Friday determined that the federal constitution doesn't guarantee a right to clean water.

The Details: In a 10-5 vote, the court concluded that there are no clearly established rights to clean drinking water and that public officials aren't required to provide accurate information about water quality under the 14th Amendment. The decision upholds a lower court's dismissal of a 2022 lawsuit from Jackson, Mississippi residents who claimed the contaminated water they were drinking violated their bodily integrity under the 14th Amendment's due process clause.

2022 Lawsuit: In 2022, several residents of Jackson, Mississippi sued over the quality and safety of the city's drinking water, arguing that the city falsely claimed the water was safe to drink despite it having high levels of lead and other contaminants. The lawsuit said that the water supply had been "neglected for decades" and argued that "access to clean, poison-free water is a fundamental human right."

How the Media Covered It: USA Today (Lean Left bias) quoted Judge Kurt Engelhardt, who wrote the majority opinion, saying the judges were "skeptical" that the Plaintiffs' argument "fits within the right to bodily integrity" and that there was no existing precedent to go off of. Mother Jones (Left) also quoted Engelhardt, but emphasized he was a Trump-appointed judge and framed him as a central figure behind the decision. The outlet wrote that the ruling comes as "the Trump administration moves to weaken clean-water-related protections." Reason (Center) said there might be an opportunity for the Supreme Court to review the case, however "it is difficult to see the [Court] being any more sympathetic" than the appellate court. AllSides didn't find coverage from the right.

What Did Gloria Steinem Contribute to American Feminism?

8 September 2026 at 13:02

Gloria Steinem's death Wednesday prompted significant reflection on her life and the feminist movement. Outlets on the left and some in the center highlighted her contribution to the feminist movement and questioned its future, while other center and right outlets explored her affiliation with the CIA during the Cold War.

Contributions to Feminism: BBC (Center bias) described Steinem as a "powerful icon of America's feminist movement" who "changed the lives of generations of women," highlighting her support of legalized abortion, same-sex marriage, and gender pay equality as well as her opposition to the death penalty and female genital mutilation. Steinem also launched Ms. Magazine, an all-female founded and operated periodical that still exists today, as well as coined the phrase "reproductive freedom," which continues to be used in debates about abortion. Steinem testified at Senate hearings for the Equal Rights Amendment in 1970, though Congress failed to pass it.

Involvement With the CIA: RT (Lean Right) and UnHerd (Center) both published analysis pieces on Steinem's affiliation with the CIA during the Cold War. According to RT, Steinem sought funding to do social reform work and promote women's freedom and independence and received funding for a nonprofit organization from the CIA after she learned that corporations were not interested in supporting her. The nonprofit, called the Independent Research Service, took liberal American students and young professionals to share American leftist ideas at Soviet youth festivals as an alternative to communism. At the time, Soviet messaging painted women as educated, socially active participants in public life, so it was "hardly surprising that it wasn't long before Washington understood the competitive value of offering its own version," RT wrote. UnHerd quoted Steinem's memoir, in which she wrote, "In my experience the [Central Intelligence] Agency was completely different from its image; it was liberal, nonviolent, and honorable."

Critiques of Steinem: An opinion piece in The Conversation (Lean Left) called Steinem "one of our greatest witnesses to a feminist revolution" but criticized some obituaries' oversimplification of the women's movement by calling her its "face" or "leader." The article noted that the 20th-century women's movement neglected racism and issues of sexuality and that Steinem faced criticism for fostering an "either/or feminism" through her fierce support of Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama before the 2008 election. BBC also noted criticism from Betty Friedan, author of The Feminine Mystique, who accused Steinem of making a private profit off the movement.

Illinois Mother Charged With Murder of Toddler, Reportedly Discussed Clancy Case Beforehand

8 September 2026 at 13:02

An Illinois woman was charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing her 2-year-old son. Outlets across the political spectrum included reports that the mother was "very invested" in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial prior to the incident.

The Details: Frankfort police responded to reports of an unresponsive toddler on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The police found a neighbor performing CPR on the child who was reportedly strangled in the basement and later died at a local hospital, according to a complaint filed on Friday. The mother, Corie Walsh, was found in a bathtub attempting to harm herself, according to prosecution. Walsh had reportedly been discussing the Clancy case in a group chat with friends in the hours leading up to the murder. Court documents said there was also another baby in the home and two school-aged children returned home around the time the toddler was found, however they were all unharmed. Walsh was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and is now in custody and "being held for medical treatment," according to NBC News (Lean Left bias).

For Context: A judge declared a mistrial in the Clancy case on Friday. Clancy faced three counts of first-degree murder and life in prison without parole for strangling her three children in 2023. She pleaded not guilty by reason of postpartum insanity. Clancy's trial became popular online, garnering millions of views and generating different perspectives with many women rallying in support of her during the trial.

RELATED: The Insight: How the Lindsay Clancy Case Became a Misinformation Chamber

Case Similarities: The Daily Caller (Right) compared similarities between Walsh and Clancy's cases, including that all the children were found dead in the basement of their homes, that they all died of asphyxia, that Clancy also attempted to take her life after killing her children and that both husbands were away at the time of death. The Caller also cited reports that Walsh had said she was "inspired" by the Clancy case. The New York Post (Right) described Walsh as "Lindsay Clancy-obsessed" in its headline.

A 'Tragedy': CNN (Lean Left) focused on quotes from Walsh's attorney, Andrea Lyon, who emphasized the "tragedy" of the incident. Lyon said Walsh had been in a "mental health crisis" and called the incident a "tragedy, for the Walsh family all of whom are mourning the loss of this child." Lyon also told CNN, "It is also a tragedy in that [Corie] herself was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time this happened." It included the case details toward the end of its article compared to other outlets like The Daily Caller, The Post, NBC and others which reported the details in the first paragraphs, including that the baby was hanged.

Community Response: ABC 7 Chicago (Center) and NBC 5 Chicago (Center) both included comments from Frankfort police department, local leaders and Frankfort residents. ABC 7 primarily focused on a community-led group that's connecting mothers with resources and support following the murder. NBC 5 also included quotes from individuals who called the incident a "heartbreaking tragedy" and quoted the Frankfort mayor who said, "I don't want people to draw conclusions out of school on this. Let the investigators get the information, get the facts."

'Far Right' AfD Delivers Massive Win in East German State, Falls Short of Majority

8 September 2026 at 13:02

The populist "far right" Alternative for Germany (AfD) party delivered a decisive victory in Germany's eastern state Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, though it fell short of a parliamentary majority.

The Results: AfD won 43.8% of the vote and gained 16 seats in the state's parliament, for a total of 39. German Chancellor Frederich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party finished second with 17.2% and lost 25 of its 40 parliamentary seats. Notably, the democratic socialist The Left (DL) lost 4 seats, and the populist "far left" Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) won 5.3% – enough to enter parliament and take 5 seats. Election turnout was a record high 76.5%.

(The Guardian)

Political Context: Several mainstream parties in Germany have vowed to form a "firewall" against AfD and never form a coalition with it, meaning its only path to power would be through a majority. In May 2025, Germany's domestic intelligence agency, the BfV, designated AfD as a right-wing extremist organization. In Germany's most recent national elections in February 2025, AfD surged to finish second to the CDU with 21% of the vote, dominating in Germany's eastern states. Previously, in September 2024, AfD delivered a historic result in the east German state of Thuringia. Members of the Trump administration, like Secretary of State Rubio, Vice President Vance, and former government efficiency lead Elon Musk, have previously appeared sympathetic to AfD's platform.

RELATED: 60 Minutes' German Censorship Segment: A Recycled NYT Report? | AllSides

BSW as Kingmaker?: Media commentators and analysts have said AfD's best path to governing could be a coalition with the newly-founded populist left-wing BSW party, which overlaps with AfD on a more hardline approach to immigration. BSW has said it would not elect AfD's Saxony-Anhalt leader, Ulrich Siegmund, as governor, but on Sunday said, "The firewall does not interest us, and we will speak with all parties." Qatari outlet Al Jazeera (Lean Left bias), The New York Times (Lean Left), and The European Conservative (Right) highlighted the prospect of a BSW-AfD coalition in analyses.

EU Leaders React: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that in Poland only "idiots or traitors" would celebrate the result. French Finance Minister Roland Lescure called it "very, very worrying." Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said it shows that "another Europe is possible." Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called it "a great night for Germany and Europe."
