  • There are no term limits for Senate members, and some have served for decades.
  • Sen. Susan Collins, 73, is running for her sixth Senate term in a high-profile race in the midterms.
  • Sen. Chuck Grassley, 93, is the longest-serving current senator with 45 years in the Senate.

Unlike the White House, where US presidents can serve only two terms, members of Congress have no term limits.

In the US Senate, some members have served for decades.

Senators are also getting older, on average. In the 119th Congress, which began in 2025, the median age of US senators was 64.

That marks an increase from the 113th Congress in 2013, when the median age in the Senate was 61, per Ballotpedia.

Of the 10 longest-serving senators, two are running for reelection in the 2026 midterm elections.

Here are the current senators who have held office the longest — and how many years they've served.

Plaque telling story of African-Caribbean prisoners in Britain stolen within days

Descendants say theft from Portchester Castle reflects racism that has haunted ‘generation after generation’

The theft of a plaque in Hampshire that told the little-known story of African-Caribbean prisoners in 18th-century Britain reflects the enduring racism that has fuelled centuries of atrocities against Black and Indigenous Caribbean people, their descendants say.

Ronald Raymond McDonald, a professional drummer, was part of a delegation that travelled from Belize and elsewhere to Portchester Castle near Portsmouth last week to honour their ancestors: 2,500 men, women and children transported to Britain as prisoners of war in 1796.

‘Opening the lid of a horrible secret’: Jamaicans confront enslavement with taboo-busting stories on screen

As violent spirits are unleashed in Sky’s Possession, observers see confident creatives reclaiming the island’s narratives in a form of ‘cultural reparation’

A woman opens a 300‑year‑old box, unleashing a violent spirit – it is the spirit of colonialism and oppression roaring back to life. It is a pivotal scene in Sky’s supernatural series Possession and symbolises a wider shift in Jamaica’s film industry, where directors are increasingly using the landscape to tell Jamaican stories – including those that confront enslavement, trauma and historical memory.

The series is about a biracial British lawyer who travels to Jamaica to investigate a multimillion-pound inheritance dispute, only to uncover a dark, vengeful spirit tied to the plantation’s brutal colonial past.

Derbez Endorses Becerra, Urges Latinos to Vote in California

16 October 2026 at 10:11
Eugenio Derbez endorses Xavier Becerra in California’s governor race and urges Latino voters to defend their right to vote.

The Mexican actor backed the Democratic gubernatorial candidate as Becerra urged voters to stand up for immigrant families.

Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez has endorsed Xavier Becerra in California’s gubernatorial race, urging Latino voters to turn out on Nov. 3 and warning against efforts to intimidate the community and discourage participation in the election.

Derbez announced his support for the Democratic candidate on Thursday at an event in Los Angeles marking Hispanic Heritage Month. He called on Latinos to exercise their political influence and defend their right to vote.

“Together, we are powerful, and we will use that power. I became a U.S. citizen several years ago because I was determined to make my voice heard,” Derbez said.

Text Reads: Actor Eugenio Derbez denounces the intimidation of Latinos in the United States at a time when this population could have significant weight in the November 3 elections.

He questioned why anyone would seek to discourage Latino voters if their participation did not matter.

“This is no coincidence. It isn’t. I ask all of you: If your vote were not important, why are they trying to intimidate us into not voting? What are those who want to intimidate us afraid of?” he said.

Derbez said Becerra understood the challenges facing the Hispanic community, making him a strong choice to lead California. Latinos account for at least 40% of the state’s population, according to the source material.

Becerra, a former U.S. health secretary and California attorney general, has also urged Latino voters to consider the interests of immigrant families and those unable to vote.

“Vote for the Dreamers and for their families, who are also living in the shadows and hoping that one day they can emerge without being attacked by ICE,” Becerra said in Los Angeles, referring to recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and their relatives. ICE is the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

As California attorney general, Becerra defended DACA, which protects eligible immigrants who arrived in the United States as children. President Donald Trump sought to end the program during his first administration.

Becerra is the son of a Mexican immigrant mother and a California-born father of Mexican descent who grew up in Mexico. He invoked his family’s experience as he called on voters to support immigrant communities.

“Vote for everyone who counts. I thank you on behalf of my mother, my father, the Dreamers and the new voters. Thanks to you, we defeated Trump’s policies that attack our immigrant families; together, we will do it again,” he said.

A poll by the University of California, Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies showed Becerra leading Republican rival Steve Hilton by 58% to 37% among voters surveyed.

Hilton, who was born in the United Kingdom and is aligned with Trump, accused Becerra on social media of using his parents’ experiences to attract votes. “Unlike Xavier Becerra, I am an immigrant,” Hilton said.
