Jimmy Kimmel Moves Talarico Interview to YouTube, Citing FCC Pressure

Late-night ABC talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will broadcast an interview with Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico on YouTube instead of network television following what he called threats by President Donald Trump's Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

For Context: Kimmel said the FCC threats were "based on simple traditional editorial decisions, guest bookings it would seem they don't like." In January, the FCC released guidance stating that entertainment talk shows should abide by the same "equal time" rules as broadcast news stations, which stipulates that shows are required to offer equal airtime to all candidates running for political office. Kimmel was also suspended last September for what was called "inflammatory remarks about [Charlie] Kirk's assassination" and faced calls to be fired after saying First Lady Malania Trump looked like "an expectant widow."

RELATED: Protected Speech, or a Bridge Too Far?

"Politically Motivated": Outlets on the left like The New Republic (Left bias) and The Washington Post (Lean Left) were less likely to highlight the FCC "equal time" guidance, instead framing the story around what the New Republic called Trump's attempt "to censor late-night TV." The Washington Post article highlighted Kimmel suggesting "the pressure was politically motivated." Both articles mentioned Kimmel saying, "Thank goodness we have that [YouTube], because in the America that we live in right now, that is the best we can do."

"Did What He Does Best": Outlets on the right like The New York Post (Right) and Fox News (Right), conversely, were more likely to highlight the equal time guidance, with Fox calling Kimmel's remarks towards the FCC "defiant." The Post article mentioned that "Trump and Kimmel have repeatedly traded barbs over the past decade, with the president saying Kimmel has 'zero talent' and poor ratings and is the worst late-night host on television."

Possible Misinformation: The New York Post reported that Jimmy Kimmel Live will no longer be aired after May 2027, marking the last season after 24 years on air. However, according to USA Today (Lean Left) reporting, ABC refuted the report, saying "This information is inaccurate—any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative."

Media Split Over Framing of Crash Involving Unauthorized Immigrant Fleeing ICE

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill is facing criticism for her anti-ICE policies after an unauthorized immigrant fled ICE officials and crashed into the wife of East Brunswick's mayor. Outlets split over whether the crash reflected the negative impact of ICE enforcement or sanctuary policies.

The Details: According to local officials, an unauthorized immigrant attempting to flee a targeted ICE stop last week ran a stoplight and drove onto US 130 highway where they caused a crash. The driver was unnamed in news coverage. Dr. Penelope Cohen, wife of East Brunswick mayor Brad Cohen, was injured in the crash and treated for non-life threatening injuries, The New York Times (Lean Left bias) reported. The crash closed Route 130 in both directions for more than an hour.

For Context: Gov. Sherrill signed three immigration-related bills into law in March that limited state and local police cooperation with ICE deportation efforts. Among those was legislation codifying New Jersey's 2018 Immigrant Trust Directive, which generally prevents state and local officials from assisting ICE raids or providing resources to immigration officers. However, it allows for certain exceptions for criminal law enforcement.

From the Right: Fox News (Right) and Just the News (Lean Right) were both critical of Sherill's immigration policies and focused on the ongoing debate over sanctuary policies. They both cited Republican lawmakers who emphasized the crash as evidence that the state's "Trust Directive" creates public-safety risks. Fox News highlighted Republican criticism of Democrats, saying they "are wrongheaded to respond to such incidents by calling for ICE's abolition rather than stronger enforcement." Just the News quoted a Republican lawmaker who said, "This is just the latest in a long line of traffic incidents and vehicular incidents that wouldn't occur if New Jersey didn't have our sanctuary status." It also included criticism from Republican lawmakers that said Democrats have an "inability to accept responsibility for the incidents" and "are doing everything they can to avoid blame."

From the Left: Conversely, The New York Times positioned the crash as a local incident that happened amid a broader surge in ICE enforcement in New Jersey. It didn't ever describe the driver as an unauthorized immigrant compared to Just the News and Fox; it described the event as "federal immigration agents were chasing another driver" and described the immigrant as "the individual" and "the driver of the vehicle that was being pursued." It noted that ICE had detained more than 2,100 people in New Jersey in July – more than twice the roughly 850 to 950 people the agency had been arresting previously. The Times also quoted the North Brunswick mayor who said he supported efforts to apprehend serious offenders, but was concerned about the tactics being used.

Trump Pledges $5,000 Payment to Every Adult if Republicans Retain Congress

President Donald Trump on Wednesday pledged a $5,000 "dividend" payment to every adult citizen in America if Republicans retain majorities in both the House and Senate in November.

"The Best Part": Trump made the pledge in what he called "the best part" of his speech at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. "If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them," Trump said, "I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000." He deemed it the "Trump dividend" and said, "Now all we have to do is win."

For Context: Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) said "I will get a bill ready so that we can get the Trump Dividend passed immediately after the November 3rd election…because Republicans (and America) will win!" The estimated cost of the dividend would be $1.23 trillion.

"Policy That Could Pull It Off": Outlets on the right like Blaze Media (Right bias) and Breitbart (Right) highlighted the $5,000 "Trump dividend." Blaze said, "with the midterm elections only 55 days away, Trump and the Republican Party are pulling out all the stops to make history."  Blaze also mentioned other portions of the president's speech, saying he "vowed to make all of his tax cuts permanent, putting even more cash back into voters' pockets," adding that "Trump tied the proposed dividend to the 'over $20 trillion in foreign investment' he's recruited from allies, his tariffs, and Vice President JD Vance's war on fraud." According to Blaze, "Trump believes he can defy history and maintain control of Congress in the midterms — and he just announced the policy that could pull it off."

"Counting On Fools": Opinion writer Steve Benen (Left) for MS Now (Left) framed the dividend around a "desperate" Donald Trump who is "well aware of the fact that his party is likely to suffer a new round of election losses" leading him to "float another ridiculous vow." Benen asserted that "There's no reason to be coy about the circumstances: This plan will never come to fruition," adding that "Trump is counting on fools to accept this nonsense at face value, but even his most knee-jerk followers need to realize that this con is literally unbelievable." Benen explained that he knows this because Trump "has tried to pull eerily similar stunts before;" the money to pay for such an idea doesn't exist according to Benen; the idea is "legally dubious" and would require congressional approval "which will not happen;" and "If Trump were serious about this, he wouldn't have to wait."

Crossing Party Lines: One America News Network (Right), while not mentioning the dividend pledge, highlighted a "surprise appearance" at the convention by Senator John Fetterman (D-PA). According to the article, the Senator crossed party lines "to offer praise for Republican candidates and critique anti-American and anti-Israel left-wing policies."

Haaretz Claims UAE Warned Netanyahu of Oct 7 Attack Days Before, Netanyahu Says 'False'

Israeli paper Haaretz (Lean Left bias) reported on Tuesday that just before Hamas' October 7, 2023, terror attack, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Hamas was planning a major operation against Israel. Netanyahu has since described the report as "false."

The Report: Haaretz said bin Zayed was surprised that Netanyahu reacted calmly when he told him this, and assured him Israel was prepared for any scenario. The paper also reported speaking to "a close adviser to bin Zayed, a Palestinian who had emigrated years ago from Gaza to Abu Dhabi and maintained strong ties in the Strip." The adviser said bin Zayed "explained that, in his assessment, Sinwar was preparing for a major event" and "hoped that despite his reserved response, Netanyahu would take the message seriously and take action."

2023 Political Context: Haaretz reported speaking to a Palestinian official also trusted by Israeli intelligence who said Israel and Gaza were closer than ever to a deal during the summer of 2023 and that the only main thing to be worked out was prisoner exchanges. Haaretz framed this as happening amid "ongoing internal upheaval in Israel." Haaretz wrote, "Netanyahu repeatedly postponed [finalizing the hostage deal]. Perhaps he did so out of fear of reaching an agreement with Hamas, or perhaps out of fear of the reaction from his extremist partners in his new government."

Netanyahu's Response: Netanyahu's office told Haaretz its investigation is an "absolute lie" and that "Netanyahu didn't speak to the president of the UAE during the period in question and received no warning from him." Netanyahu said on behalf of his Likud party that the report was politically motivated and demanded that a criminal investigation be opened into Haaretz, the reporters, and his political opponent Yair Golan and his Democrats party. His office also said, "This is a sinister libel with clear political timing, as part of the left's election campaign, and there will be more such false libels."

UAE Comment: The UAE's Foreign Ministry said it "does not comment on reports or speculations published in the media regarding conversations between government leaders."

Current Political Context: Israel will hold parliamentary elections on October 27. Netanyahu's "right-wing" Likud party has held a significant lead in polls, though in recent months the "centrist" Yashar party has closed the gap, even leading in some polls. Most recently, Netanyahu has called on right-wing leaders Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich to unite their parties since Smotrich's party is currently polling below the threshold of votes needed to enter parliament.

Biden Admin Misinfo?: Haaretz also claimed that immediately after the October 7 attacks, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told Israel Hamas was ready to release all the hostages it had taken. Israel reportedly did not want to speak to Hamas, so al-Thani then called Biden administration Secretary of State Antony Blinken to request help in mediating a release deal. Haaretz reported that Blinken said "there's no one to talk to" and that he would "speak with Netanyahu personally" in three days. Of the reporting, Blinken wrote on X, "For the record, this is false. Complete fiction."

RELATED: USAID Report Claims Over 100 UNRWA Employees Participated in October 7 Attacks | AllSides

Past Speculation: Haaretz noted that on October 9, 2023, Israeli outlet Ynet reported that one week before the attack, Egypt's intelligence chief Abbas Kamel warned Netanyahu that "something fierce will happen from Gaza." One year ago, Haaretz reported that the Nova music festival – where, on October 7, 378 Israelis were killed and 44 were taken hostage – was originally slated to end on October 6 but was permitted to extend to October 7 by the IDF. Haaretz said at the time that the IDF had expressed concern that the festival took place too close to Gaza. Notably, in American media, five days after the October 7 attacks, Charlie Kirk (Right) appeared on the Patrick Bet-David Podcast and questioned why Israel took so long to respond to Hamas' attack. He argued that in the nine months leading up to the attack, Israel was "on the brink of civil war" and framed the attack as a "mandate" for Netanyahu's government to "try to ethnically cleanse Gaza."

RELATED: Israeli Minister Ben Gvir Says He's 'Pleased' With Worsening Conditions for Palestinian Prisoners Ahead of Elections | AllSides

How The Media Covered It: Haaretz's original report was picked up by several major mainstream US publications. NBC News (Lean Left) described it as a "political bombshell." The New York Post (Right) described it similarly in its headline, though as a "bombshell" that Netanyahu "furiously" disputed. Several major outlets also covered Netanyahu's denial and plans to sue Haaretz. In its coverage of this, The Times of Israel (Center) reported that "an Emirati source familiar with the conversation confirmed the Haaretz newspaper's report to The Times of Israel on Tuesday." Haaretz has stood by its reporting.

Anthropic Researcher Resigns, Says AI "Could Kill Us All By the End of the Decade"

An engineer at Anthropic, the company that owns the artificial intelligence (AI) model Claude, resigned and starkly warned the public about the dangers of AI.

The Details: Jacob Coxon performed pre-training research at Anthropic and OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, for the last three years. After his resignation, Coxon said that "neither company is acting responsibly" and posted a thread on X, which read, "Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources… The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade." Another researcher at Anthropic, Evan Hubinger, responded that many researchers "really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade." Hubinger continued, "I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to."

For Context: In July, an AI model by OpenAI allegedly hacked the AI company Hugging Face with no human direction. Anthropic and Meta also acknowledged that some of their own AI models had carried out rogue hacks. A bill called the "AI Kill Switch Act" that would give Congress the authority to turn off AI models that threaten the public was introduced to the House of Representatives after the Hugging Face hacking incident, according to CBS News (Lean Left bias).

How the Media Covered It: Fortune (Center) wrote that both Anthropic and OpenAI "seem to be struggling to find the right balance between prioritizing safety research—and public messaging about AI safety—and prioritizing model development." Fortune also noted calls to action from several AI employees, including Coxon, who asked, "If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Should you put your head down because 'it's happening anyway'—or take this moment to call for different conditions?" New York Post (Lean Right) highlighted an X thread from one of Anthropic's safety experts, Samuel Marks, who wrote, "I work on safety research at Anthropic because I hope my work will reduce the chance of these extinction-level bad outcomes." CBS noted that the notion that AI has the potential to threaten humanity "is not new," and "many top executives within both OpenAI and Anthropic have stated as much in the past."

Outlets Reflect on Charlie Kirk's Death One Year Later

One year after conservative commentator Charlie Kirk's death, media outlets across the political spectrum are reflecting on his impact, the future of Turning Point USA and where campus speech stands today.

For Context: Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University. Tyler Robinson is accused of killing Kirk after allegedly firing a rifle from a rooftop near the Turning Point USA "Prove Me Wrong" campus event that Kirk was speaking at. Robinson pleaded not guilty of several charges in connection with the assassination, including aggravated murder, on Sept. 1.

From Conservative Commentators: Fox News (Right bias) shared interviews with Ben Shapiro (Right), Michael Knowles (Right) and Turning Point reporter Savanah Hernandez who reflected on Kirk's death and shifts in violence and "potentially antagonistic audiences" following the incident, specifically from the left. Knowles called Kirk's death the "apotheosis of a decade of leftist threats and violence against conservatives" while Shapiro said it seemed the "permission structures for violence have become commonplace in American public life."

The Meme-ification of Kirk: An opinion for The Intercept (Left) focused on the memes that've followed Kirk's death, including the AI-generated song, "We are Charlie Kirk" and insertions of his face into popular movies and video games. The writer argued, "The ridicule comes as a product of the American right's insistence that Kirk's violent death be taken seriously," and noted instances where the Trump administration attempted to crack down on these memes. They said the attempts to memorialize Kirk have "failed spectacularly" and that "One year after Kirk's killing, the conservative movement has descended into in-fighting," while Turning Point has "no heir apparent to energize young conservatives."

What's Next for Turning Point: Other outlets on the left also focused Turning Point's role leading up to the midterms. The Washington Post (Lean Left) emphasized challenges that the GOP faces with young voters and wrote that "Republicans are bracing for losses." It reported that the organization was in "good financial shape," despite undergoing challenges like finding another leader and dealing with "a proliferation of conspiracy theories about Kirk's death," including those fueled by "onetime allies including Candace Owens." Wired (Left) wrote that Turning Point is expected to spend tens of millions of ads and turnout ahead of the midterms, with a focus on New Hampshire, Arizona and Nevada.

Speech on Campus: Many outlets cited a FIRE (Center) report that showed 121 of the 261 colleges surveyed (46%) received "F" grades when it came to promoting free expression on campus. The Washington Times (Lean Right) quoted FIRE's chief researcher who said Kirk's assassination has negatively impacted speech on campus and cited responses from both liberal and conservative students who said threats of violence, like Kirk's shooting, kept them from sharing their views. Opinion writers in the Wall Street Journal (Center) called the findings "troubling." The writers argued, "If our free society is to function at all, it must never be considered OK to stop Kirk from spreading his message with the ultimate heckler's veto: a bullet."

In an opinion for Fox News, University President Dr. Kent Ingle argued Kirk didn't take open debate away from colleges; the role of maintaining dialogue was up to higher education, and "We vacated it." Ingle wrote, "We taught a generation that disagreement is a form of injury, then acted surprised when they began treating a speaker as a threat." He highlighted speaker events hosted on his campus, Southeastern University, and urged university leaders to "Adopt a real free expression policy." Ingle concluded by saying, "[Kirk] should not have needed the tent. The room was ours. It is time we starting using it for what it was built for."

UK, France and Canada Move to Block Imports From Israeli Settlements in the West Bank

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced that the United Kingdom will join France and Canada in blocking imports of products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank in defense of a two-state solution to the conflict in the Gaza region.

The Details: Miliband said, "Our argument is not with the people of Israel, with whom the U.K. has unshakeable bonds; our argument is with the conduct of its government." He told members of Parliament, "The British government agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists." NPR (Lean Left bias) noted that "measures announced today are understood to be limited but symbolically significant," with the government expected to target goods specifically originating from the Israeli settlements rather than Israeli products as a whole.

For Context: The UK made this announcement in conjunction with Canada and France, joining Ireland, Spain, Norway, and others, who have also taken steps to restrict trade on goods produced in the West Bank. The countries released a statement together that said, "Together, we are resolute: the two-state solution must be protected, and we will take action in pursuit of a just and lasting peace." Reuters (Center) reported that Israel's government "is financing some of the West Bank's most radical settlers, who use illegal outpost farms to displace Palestinians."

Response in the US: Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, called the move "irrational" and told BBC (Center), "I don't understand what it's supposed to achieve. If the U.K. is really interested in dealing with issues they feel like are wrong, where are the sanctions against North Korea, China, and Russia?"

How the Media Covered It: Both Reuters and NPR highlighted the symbolic nature of the trade ban, as products from the West Bank represent a very small portion of Israel's exports. Both outlets mentioned the criticism from Huckabee but focused largely on statements from participating countries about the importance of peace in the region and a two-state solution that recognizes Palestine. Fox News (Right) noted that the UK's decision could "create an early point of friction" between President Donald Trump and the UK's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, as Trump has strongly backed Israel. Fox also included a social media post from Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, which translates to "We will not be a doormat for an antisemitic government in a country occupied by radical Islam that is trying to escape economic and social collapse by attacking Jews and the State of Israel. The British Mandate in Israel is over."

Canada's Retaliatory Tariffs Take Effect, Trump Retaliates With 50% Tariff, Targeted Import Ban

After Canadian tariffs took effect on roughly $20 billion of US goods on Tuesday, President Trump has issued an import ban on Canadian dairy products, large motorcycles, and alcoholic beverages, and a 50% tariff on additional goods.

The Details: The new tariffs will take effect on September 15, and the import bans will take effect on September 29.

Trade Context: After tensions escalated earlier this year between the two countries, in July, the Trump administration announced a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of various Canadian imports set for August 19th, arguing that the US experienced "trade discrimination" from Canada. Then in August, right before the deadline, the two countries almost reached a deal, but it ultimately fell through, prompting Canada to go ahead with its retaliatory tariffs. Most recently, President Trump has stirred controversy with Canada by signing an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America.

RELATED: US-Canada Tensions Rise Amid Brewing 'Trade War' | AllSides

US Position: US trade ambassador Jamieson Greer said, "After weeks of good faith and intensive efforts between U.S. and Canadian negotiators, Canada walked away from a near-final trade deal that offered better treatment than any other trading partner, and instead Canada chose to embark on senseless retaliation against the United States. Today's action… is a natural consequence of Canada's continued discriminatory treatment of crucial American... President Trump will continue to leverage the tools at his disposal to defend the interests of American workers and exporters, and restore reciprocity in our bilateral trade relationships."

CAN Position: Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said Canada is "assessing" Trump's latest move and that Canada's "first priority remains on protecting and supporting Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses from these unjustified actions." He added that he is "in contact with Ambassador Greer" and that "when the United States is ready to engage in dialogue, our government will work in good faith and constructively toward establishing safer and mutually beneficial trade relations that fully respect Canadian sovereignty."

How The Media Covered It: As has been the case with previous developments in the US-Canada trade saga, outlets from the left and center more prominently noted the depth of the US-Canada trade relationship and potential consequences, though outlets across the spectrum have noted concerns. Axios (Lean Left bias) concluded in its news coverage, "The two economies are so deeply intertwined that escalating trade tensions could run into political and economic limits." Fox Business (Lean Right) concluded, "Neither government has indicated when formal trade negotiations will resume, leaving uncertainty over whether the latest restrictions represent another negotiating tactic or a longer-term shift in North American trade relations." German state broadcaster DW News (Center) included a section that said with his recent maneuvers, President Trump has "pushed Ottawa to explore a deeper relationship with the European Union."

US Court Rules No Constitutional Right to Clean Water, Information About Water Quality

A US appellate court on Friday determined that the federal constitution doesn't guarantee a right to clean water.

The Details: In a 10-5 vote, the court concluded that there are no clearly established rights to clean drinking water and that public officials aren't required to provide accurate information about water quality under the 14th Amendment. The decision upholds a lower court's dismissal of a 2022 lawsuit from Jackson, Mississippi residents who claimed the contaminated water they were drinking violated their bodily integrity under the 14th Amendment's due process clause.

2022 Lawsuit: In 2022, several residents of Jackson, Mississippi sued over the quality and safety of the city's drinking water, arguing that the city falsely claimed the water was safe to drink despite it having high levels of lead and other contaminants. The lawsuit said that the water supply had been "neglected for decades" and argued that "access to clean, poison-free water is a fundamental human right."

How the Media Covered It: USA Today (Lean Left bias) quoted Judge Kurt Engelhardt, who wrote the majority opinion, saying the judges were "skeptical" that the Plaintiffs' argument "fits within the right to bodily integrity" and that there was no existing precedent to go off of. Mother Jones (Left) also quoted Engelhardt, but emphasized he was a Trump-appointed judge and framed him as a central figure behind the decision. The outlet wrote that the ruling comes as "the Trump administration moves to weaken clean-water-related protections." Reason (Center) said there might be an opportunity for the Supreme Court to review the case, however "it is difficult to see the [Court] being any more sympathetic" than the appellate court. AllSides didn't find coverage from the right.

What Did Gloria Steinem Contribute to American Feminism?

Gloria Steinem's death Wednesday prompted significant reflection on her life and the feminist movement. Outlets on the left and some in the center highlighted her contribution to the feminist movement and questioned its future, while other center and right outlets explored her affiliation with the CIA during the Cold War.

Contributions to Feminism: BBC (Center bias) described Steinem as a "powerful icon of America's feminist movement" who "changed the lives of generations of women," highlighting her support of legalized abortion, same-sex marriage, and gender pay equality as well as her opposition to the death penalty and female genital mutilation. Steinem also launched Ms. Magazine, an all-female founded and operated periodical that still exists today, as well as coined the phrase "reproductive freedom," which continues to be used in debates about abortion. Steinem testified at Senate hearings for the Equal Rights Amendment in 1970, though Congress failed to pass it.

Involvement With the CIA: RT (Lean Right) and UnHerd (Center) both published analysis pieces on Steinem's affiliation with the CIA during the Cold War. According to RT, Steinem sought funding to do social reform work and promote women's freedom and independence and received funding for a nonprofit organization from the CIA after she learned that corporations were not interested in supporting her. The nonprofit, called the Independent Research Service, took liberal American students and young professionals to share American leftist ideas at Soviet youth festivals as an alternative to communism. At the time, Soviet messaging painted women as educated, socially active participants in public life, so it was "hardly surprising that it wasn't long before Washington understood the competitive value of offering its own version," RT wrote. UnHerd quoted Steinem's memoir, in which she wrote, "In my experience the [Central Intelligence] Agency was completely different from its image; it was liberal, nonviolent, and honorable."

Critiques of Steinem: An opinion piece in The Conversation (Lean Left) called Steinem "one of our greatest witnesses to a feminist revolution" but criticized some obituaries' oversimplification of the women's movement by calling her its "face" or "leader." The article noted that the 20th-century women's movement neglected racism and issues of sexuality and that Steinem faced criticism for fostering an "either/or feminism" through her fierce support of Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama before the 2008 election. BBC also noted criticism from Betty Friedan, author of The Feminine Mystique, who accused Steinem of making a private profit off the movement.

Illinois Mother Charged With Murder of Toddler, Reportedly Discussed Clancy Case Beforehand

An Illinois woman was charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing her 2-year-old son. Outlets across the political spectrum included reports that the mother was "very invested" in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial prior to the incident.

The Details: Frankfort police responded to reports of an unresponsive toddler on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The police found a neighbor performing CPR on the child who was reportedly strangled in the basement and later died at a local hospital, according to a complaint filed on Friday. The mother, Corie Walsh, was found in a bathtub attempting to harm herself, according to prosecution. Walsh had reportedly been discussing the Clancy case in a group chat with friends in the hours leading up to the murder. Court documents said there was also another baby in the home and two school-aged children returned home around the time the toddler was found, however they were all unharmed. Walsh was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and is now in custody and "being held for medical treatment," according to NBC News (Lean Left bias).

For Context: A judge declared a mistrial in the Clancy case on Friday. Clancy faced three counts of first-degree murder and life in prison without parole for strangling her three children in 2023. She pleaded not guilty by reason of postpartum insanity. Clancy's trial became popular online, garnering millions of views and generating different perspectives with many women rallying in support of her during the trial.

RELATED: The Insight: How the Lindsay Clancy Case Became a Misinformation Chamber

Case Similarities: The Daily Caller (Right) compared similarities between Walsh and Clancy's cases, including that all the children were found dead in the basement of their homes, that they all died of asphyxia, that Clancy also attempted to take her life after killing her children and that both husbands were away at the time of death. The Caller also cited reports that Walsh had said she was "inspired" by the Clancy case. The New York Post (Right) described Walsh as "Lindsay Clancy-obsessed" in its headline.

A 'Tragedy': CNN (Lean Left) focused on quotes from Walsh's attorney, Andrea Lyon, who emphasized the "tragedy" of the incident. Lyon said Walsh had been in a "mental health crisis" and called the incident a "tragedy, for the Walsh family all of whom are mourning the loss of this child." Lyon also told CNN, "It is also a tragedy in that [Corie] herself was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time this happened." It included the case details toward the end of its article compared to other outlets like The Daily Caller, The Post, NBC and others which reported the details in the first paragraphs, including that the baby was hanged.

Community Response: ABC 7 Chicago (Center) and NBC 5 Chicago (Center) both included comments from Frankfort police department, local leaders and Frankfort residents. ABC 7 primarily focused on a community-led group that's connecting mothers with resources and support following the murder. NBC 5 also included quotes from individuals who called the incident a "heartbreaking tragedy" and quoted the Frankfort mayor who said, "I don't want people to draw conclusions out of school on this. Let the investigators get the information, get the facts."

'Far Right' AfD Delivers Massive Win in East German State, Falls Short of Majority

The populist "far right" Alternative for Germany (AfD) party delivered a decisive victory in Germany's eastern state Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, though it fell short of a parliamentary majority.

The Results: AfD won 43.8% of the vote and gained 16 seats in the state's parliament, for a total of 39. German Chancellor Frederich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party finished second with 17.2% and lost 25 of its 40 parliamentary seats. Notably, the democratic socialist The Left (DL) lost 4 seats, and the populist "far left" Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) won 5.3% – enough to enter parliament and take 5 seats. Election turnout was a record high 76.5%.

(The Guardian)

Political Context: Several mainstream parties in Germany have vowed to form a "firewall" against AfD and never form a coalition with it, meaning its only path to power would be through a majority. In May 2025, Germany's domestic intelligence agency, the BfV, designated AfD as a right-wing extremist organization. In Germany's most recent national elections in February 2025, AfD surged to finish second to the CDU with 21% of the vote, dominating in Germany's eastern states. Previously, in September 2024, AfD delivered a historic result in the east German state of Thuringia. Members of the Trump administration, like Secretary of State Rubio, Vice President Vance, and former government efficiency lead Elon Musk, have previously appeared sympathetic to AfD's platform.

RELATED: 60 Minutes' German Censorship Segment: A Recycled NYT Report? | AllSides

BSW as Kingmaker?: Media commentators and analysts have said AfD's best path to governing could be a coalition with the newly-founded populist left-wing BSW party, which overlaps with AfD on a more hardline approach to immigration. BSW has said it would not elect AfD's Saxony-Anhalt leader, Ulrich Siegmund, as governor, but on Sunday said, "The firewall does not interest us, and we will speak with all parties." Qatari outlet Al Jazeera (Lean Left bias), The New York Times (Lean Left), and The European Conservative (Right) highlighted the prospect of a BSW-AfD coalition in analyses.

EU Leaders React: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that in Poland only "idiots or traitors" would celebrate the result. French Finance Minister Roland Lescure called it "very, very worrying." Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said it shows that "another Europe is possible." Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called it "a great night for Germany and Europe."

Fox News Parts Ways With Maria Bartiromo as Attorney Disputes Reports She Was Fired

Fox News has parted ways with longtime anchor Maria Bartiromo after more than 12 years with the network. But Bartiromo is disputing reports that she was fired.

The Details: After media reports announced Bartiromo's firing from Fox News, her attorney, Bryan Freedman, released a statement Thursday calling reports that she was no longer an employee of Fox News "irresponsible." Her attorney wrote in an email, "The release speaks for itself," according to Newsweek. Bartiromo has maintained a close relationship with President Trump and has frequently given him a friendly platform, but she has also at times publicly challenged members of his administration, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over the rollout and messaging of Trump's tariff policy.

Fox News Media's Statement: Fox News Media issued a press release that didn't give details about Bartiromo's next endeavors or the reason for the departure from the news network. Fox News Media said, "We thank Maria for her work over the last 12 ½ years and wish her all the best on her next chapter." Shows previously hosted by Bartiromo, including Mornings with Maria, will transition to Mornings with FOX Business with rotating anchors, according to the press release.

Trump's Reaction: Trump praised Bartiromo in a post on his Truth Social platform. "I can't believe Maria Bartiromo is no longer going to have her great show(s) on FoxNews/Business," he wrote. "Three different shows, always number one. Maria is a total professional, and a true warrior. Her fans, of which there are many, will not be happy. God bless you, Maria!"

How The Media Covered It: CNN (Lean Left bias) focused on the reported dispute over Fox's internal editorial guidance and Bartiromo's relationship with the Trump White House, framing her departure around Fox's corporate and editorial interests. Newsmax (Right) also reported the alleged sharing of internal guidance but gave more attention to Bartiromo's status as a prominent pro-Trump host and compared her departure with previous high-profile Fox exits, including Tucker Carlson and Bill O'Reilly.

Women Accounted for 98% of New US Jobs in August

Women accounted for 98% of new jobs in August, according to the monthly jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), prompting headlines and analysis.

Jobs Report: The US added 162,000 new non-farm payrolls in August, something that mainstream outlets across the spectrum framed positively as a better-than-expected result. Unemployment stayed steady at 4.1%. Food services added 59,000 jobs, local government education added 42,000, manufacturing added 16,000, construction added 22,000, and healthcare added 13,000. Conversely, the information sector, which includes things like web infrastructure, lost 23,000 jobs. The Wall Street Journal (Center bias) called the report a "bright spot" after "early-summer doldrums" and noted that it previously polled economists who expected the economy to add 53,000 jobs in August.

Ladies First: Women accounted for 158,000 new jobs in August, while men accounted for 4,000. This was covered in headlines by a handful of mainstream outlets, including Fortune (Center), Semafor (Lean Left), CNBC (Lean Left), Just The News (Lean Right), and The Post Millennial (Right). President Trump shared Just The News' coverage on Truth Social and wrote, "No wonder they like me!!!"

Not Good News?: Semafor and Fortune both framed the news as lukewarm or possibly negative for women. Semafor quoted Indeed Hiring Lab and wrote, "Because women tend to earn less than men and are likelier to hold multiple jobs, the figure suggests hiring is clustered in low-paying, contingent roles, meaning it's not 'necessarily a positive story for women overall.'" Fortune spoke to Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, who said, "I think there's been way too much focus on the month to month – is it men gaining jobs or women? That moves around a lot." She claimed, "The reason that women were down in July and up in August is almost entirely driven by education hiring – the teacher effect. It's not like something dramatically changed for women."

Another Angle: Fortune noted that men lost 6,000 jobs to women in leisure and hospitality and that "several other service industries showed the same pattern, where women accounted for more than 100% of net job growth since male employment fell." The Daily Wire (Right) highlighted that since President Trump took office for his second term, women have driven "nearly all net hiring." The Daily Wire referenced an analysis from the "left-leaning nonprofit" Economic Security Project, which noted that since December 2024, women's cumulative payrolls have risen by about 765,000, and men have dropped by about 6,000.

Envoys Witkoff and Kushner Hold Peace Talks in Moscow and Kyiv

President Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow on Saturday for over three hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and then to Kyiv on Sunday for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Key Context: Ahead of the talks, Trump told reporters, "We have an idea for peace. I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They've done a great job, and we sent them over to see whether or not we can get something done. And there may be a good chance that we'll do it." Both Russia and Ukraine agreed to refrain from striking each other's capitals during the visits.

Moscow Talks: Mainstream reporting mostly focused on quotes from Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov. Ushakov told reporters that Witkoff and Kushner were "seriously prepared" for the meeting, which was "substantive, constructive, extremely candid and trusting." He said US envoys presented "a number of considerations regarding possible paths toward a settlement," and that "tangible advances of the Russian army in the combat zone were noted. And it was acknowledged that negotiations must be aimed at eliminating the root causes of the conflict." The two sides also discussed "in considerable detail" potential "major, mutually beneficial Russian-American" economic projects, according to Yushakov. Witkoff reportedly thanked Putin for the recent release of Robert Gilman, a former Marine who had been imprisoned in Russia.

Journey to Kyiv: Witkoff and Kushner flew out of Moscow and landed in Rzeszów, Poland, around 1:30 a.m. CEST on Sunday. They then proceeded by train to Kyiv, where they were greeted by several of Ukraine's top ministers, according to The Kyiv Independent (Center), which said they had to travel by rail because "Russian strikes prevented a flight." The outlet also reported that, according to "two people familiar with the matter… national security advisors from Germany, France, and the UK are also expected to attend the discussions."

Kyiv Talks: Zelenskyy said the discussions were "good" and included "several new ideas" but did not elaborate on what the ideas were. He said he was "grateful that, despite the long hiatus," there were "some form of negotiations" and that "Ukraine, Europe, and the US will meet in the near future." Zelenskyy also said the US will "increase the production" of "Patriot systems next year" because Ukraine is "counting on such systems to protect our state."

US Side: After the Kyiv talks, Kushner told reporters, "One thing Steve and I really thought would be productive is to go back to the trilateral format, which we were able to do about six months ago." Reflecting on previous trilateral negotiations, he said, "Everyone was speaking, you know, in Russian to each other and really discussing these issues in a very actually friendly manner, all in Russian." Zelenskyy said Ukraine must do "everything possible" to make these trilateral talks happen. The Kyiv Independent reported speaking to "a source familiar with the matter" who said Trump is expected to speak with Putin and Zelenskyy after his September 7 briefing.

Split Framing: Kremlin-funded RT (Lean Right) and CNN (Lean Left) both highlighted optimistic quotes from Witkoff in headlines after the Kyiv talks concluded on Sunday. Conversely, The Kyiv Independent framed the talks as a failure and quoted Zelenskyy, who said "the war will continue," in its headline.

House Votes to Condemn Socialism and Democratic Socialists of America

All House Republicans along with eight House Democrats voted to adopt a congressional resolution formally denouncing socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) on Tuesday.

The Bill: The non-binding resolution condemns and denounces "socialism in all its forms," stating that "socialist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships." Several specific examples are listed where "socialism has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide." The resolution asserted that the "United States was founded on the belief in the sanctity of the individual, to which the collectivistic system of socialism in all its forms is fundamentally and necessarily opposed." The resolution also contained a measure which called for the passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act. The resolution passed in a 220-192 vote.

Depressing: James Freeman, writing for Wall Street Journal Opinion (Lean Right bias) said "let's celebrate the brave few who signed their names and their sacred honor this week to an amendment that tells the truth about history's most murderous ideology." According to Freeman, "It's hard to find anything in this summary [a draft amendment written by supporting Democrats] of the last bloody century that a reasonable person would want changed except to replace the word 'capitalism' with 'free enterprise.'" Freeman asked, "When was the last time you wanted to copy and paste the text of congressional legislation—offered entirely by Democrats! —and email it to your children?" There are still "a brave few House members" willing to "stand tall against collectivist horror," adding that "it's depressing how few elected Democrats are willing to stand up against the vicious Marxists intent on taking over their party."

The S-Word: Opinion writer Ben Burgis for Jacobin (Left) said that "Congress Is Red-Baiting Like It's 1955." The "Anti-DSA Bill" is "rehearse[d] opposition to Stalinist authoritarianism" according to Burgis, while "the bill's real preoccupation is with socialists advocacy for expanded democracy." Burgis called the resolution's nominal argument "a mess," explaining that "The first two 'whereas' clauses are claims about the crimes of Stalinist regimes," and asserting that "democratic socialists have always been critical of such regimes." The "resoultion's strategy of lumping democratic socialists with authoritarian states is dramatically undercut by clauses about DSA's calls to expand voting rights, abolish the Senate, and enact ranked-choice voting to make it easier for third parties to compete" according to Burgis. He asserted that "Letting more people vote, making political representation proportional to the number of voters in each state, and expanding the options on Americans' ballots would take us much further from anything resembling an authoritarian one-party state." The bottom-line, according to Burgis, is that "The Republican-dominated Congress thinks that the mention of the S-word will inspire terror in the hearts of patriotic Americans, as though this were 1955."

Lindsay Clancy Judge Declares Mistrial: What's Next in the Case?

Lindsay Clancy, 36, faces three counts of first-degree murder and life in prison without parole for strangling her three children – Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callen, 8 – to death in 2023. Clancy pleaded not guilty by reason of postpartum insanity.

The Details: Judge William Sullivan declared the mistrial on Friday afternoon, saying, "I understood how hard everybody worked in this case. I understood that you all gave everything you could and probably more than you thought you could."

The jury foreperson reportedly stated to Sullivan on Thursday that one juror was "rufus[ing to] listen to the law" that defines "reasonable doubt." The jury then reported on Friday morning that the deadlock remained, writing, "It is with a heavy heart that we report we are unable to come to a unanimous decision and will not be able to." The defense followed with a request for the outlying juror's removal and filed an emergency motion to stay the verdict, which Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) Associate Justice Dalila Argaez Wendlandt denied.

Key Defense Arguments: Defense Attorney Kevin Reddington argued that Clancy was undertreated and overmedicated when she carried out the murders – factors that denoted her legal inculpability. He called Clancy a "fantastic, wonderful individual." He claimed that during the trial – which has given voice to about 70 out of 200 witnesses since it began on July 27th – "nobody had anything bad to say about her except for the two prosecutors and apparently [Plymouth County District Attorney] Tim Cruz."

Criticizing the outlying juror, he said, "She deserved that acquittal that she should have had." He also told Sullivan that his method of reviewing "reasonable doubt" with the jurors was "soft." Forensic psychiatrist and filicide expert Dr. Phillip Resnick said Clancy believed she was doing what was best for her children.

Key Prosecution Arguments: Prosecuting Attorneys Jennifer Sprague and Shanan Buckingham argued instead that Clancy, who sent her husband to pick up food before carrying out the murders, acted with "deliberate, premeditated, and extreme atrocity and cruelty." Forensic psychologist Kirk Heilbrun partially agreed with Resnick's assessment in saying Clancy's actions aligned with "altruistic filicide," but he said that such an alignment supplants the postpartum psychosis argument.

What's Next: Reddington requested that Sullivan consider a not-guilty ruling due to insufficient evidence, and a hearing is now set for September 29th. If denied, Cruz will be tasked with deciding whether to establish a retrial. Cruz said on Friday, "We're here at this courthouse today because those children are not."

How The Media Covered It: This case has garnered extreme national polarization alternative to the traditional left-to-right political scale, and it's erupted deep questions about psychiatric care, mental health precedents, criminal culpability, and nuances in court proceedings. Read more about the culture of this case.

House Democrats Block Constitutional Amendment to Keep Supreme Court at Nine Justices

House Democrats on Wednesday blocked a proposed Constitutional amendment to prevent expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court.

The Bill: To pass the house, the bill would have needed a two-thirds majority vote, but only garnered 212-206, with all but one Democrat opposing the measure. The bill, if passed by the House, Senate, and ratified by 38 states would have stipulated that "The Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of nine justices."

Frame Democrats As Radical: The Washington Examiner (Lean Right bias) called the measure "a symbolic gesture," explaining that it was "not expected to advance." The article highlighted Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), who proposed the bill, saying the Democrats voted against the bill "so they can follow through on a radical socialist agenda." The Examiner also mentioned that "The Republican Party instantly seized on the outcome as an avenue to frame Democrats as radical ahead of the midterm elections."

Republican Concerns: Reuters (Center) asserted that "House Republicans staged the vote to highlight the potential for Democrats, angered by rulings on issues such as abortion and voting rights, to expand the court and weaken its conservative majority if they regain control of Congress in November's midterms." The outlet also noted that both parties "have historically staged votes on bills they know will fail but are known as 'messaging bills' that can be used to shore up support with voters during election campaigns and force political opponents into taking stands on thorny issues." Reuters also said that Republican Speaker Mike Johnson's decision to schedule the vote "underscored Republican concerns that Trump's low approval ratings could cost the party its House or Senate majority."

Fever Pitch: The Washington Post (Lean Left), before the House vote, published an article headlined "Angry at the Supreme Court, liberals push a slew of plans for overhauling it." The article highlighted a bill that proposes increasing the number of Supreme Court justices to 13 while another bill would cut the lifetime terms of justices to 18 years. According to the Post, "the latest wave of proposals to overhaul the Supreme Court have reached something of a fever pitch over the past few months, as Democrats grow increasingly frustrated with the court's rightward turn."

Trump Admin Proposes Stripping Federal Tax Exemptions From Private Schools That Consider Race

The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) proposed regulations to end federal tax exemptions for "private schools that engage in racial discrimination" on Thursday.

The Details: According to the IRS, the rules would affect primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, and universities that discriminate based on race, color, or national or ethnic origin across any program or policy. Religious schools will retain the right to select students based on religious affiliation and maintain religious missions or observance. Institutions may still expand opportunities for disadvantaged students using race-neutral criteria, with final regulations taking effect for taxable years starting on or after May 31, 2027. The two agencies think that if implemented, the proposal could impact 18,000 institutions.

For Context: The proposal follows up on an executive order President Trump signed on his second day in office, "Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity." In March 2025, the Trump administration launched an investigation into diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs at over 50 universities across the United States.

How The Media Covered It: The Daily Caller (Right bias) first reported the news on Wednesday night, before the federal government confirmed it on Thursday. Outlets across the spectrum framed the policy slightly differently in headlines. The Daily Caller repeated the administration's wording of "racial discrimination" in its headline, whereas The New York Times (Lean Left) described it as "aid" for "minority students." Just The News (Lean Right) described it as "race-based aid," and US News & World Report (Lean Left) said it affects schools with "DEI policies." The New York Times included perspectives from several "nonprofit experts" who were critical of the proposal.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Faces Criticism for Wearing Hijab at Islamic Center

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) was criticized by some for wearing a hijab while visiting an Islamic center last weekend, drawing split coverage across the political spectrum.

The Criticism: Several influencers on X made remarks about the visit. End Wokeness (Right bias) said "Feminist icon' NY Governor Hochul just put on a hijab for Muslim men." Swimmer and women's sports activist Riley Gaines said "A self-described feminist voluntarily wearing a hijab to not offend/arouse Muslim men." Matt Van Swol wrote "New York forgot" and posted a picture of the September 11 terror attack in New York City. President Donald Trump on Truth Social said "Kathy Hochul, considered the Worst Governor in the Country, in a recent picture working hard to get the Arab Vote, even though they can't stand her! Congestion Pricing in Manhattan is hurting her with everybody, but especially the people for whom she wears the hijab. The whole thing is CRAZY!"

'The Silliest Issue': Opinion writer for HuffPost (Left) Ron Dicker highlighted the "Right-wing personalities from media and politics accus[ing] the governor of subjugating herself and 'bowing down to the third world.'" The article also mentioned that "Hochul faced similar criticism last year when Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) mocked her for wearing a headscarf to the funeral of a Muslim police officer." According to Dicker, Hochul was "politely adhering to custom in a place related to religious worship," adding however, that "some in the MAGAsphere saw it differently. Hochul "took a beating" over what Dicker called "the silliest issue."

'Working Hard To Get The Arab Vote': Blaze Media (Right) highlighted Hochul's response, saying "Trump's hijab jab sends Hochul into a rage," adding that she "is lashing out at the president and accusing him of Islamophobia."
