Milan, a city torn apart by luxury and inequality
Milan is the city where singer Dua Lipa is considering moving to but also where many of the local residents are being forced to leave. It is among the places that host the most millionaires in the world, who move into new skyscrapers designed by prominent architects. They are drawn by the flat tax offered in Italy since 2017, a single payment of €300,000 (it convinced Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Real Madrid for Juventus in 2018). It is the so‑called Milan Model — a city of luxury, culture, fashion and investment banks, ideal for living, except that soaring housing prices have made living impossible: buying a home costs 57% more than a decade ago, and renting is 70% more expensive than in 2018, according to online real estate data.
