UK politics: Reform UK claims racism exposé has left some members ‘psychologically damaged’ as it reports ITV to police – as it happened

Zia Yusuf claims undercover investigation broke the law as broadcaster stands by its journalism

Here is an explainer by Jill Ambrose about the Jackdaw decision.

But environmental groups have condemned the decision. Ami McCarthy, head of politics for Greenpeace UK, said:

Approving Jackdaw shows the toxic grip fossil fuel lobbyists still hold over our energy policy. Andy Burnham promised pragmatism [see 8.40am], but there is nothing pragmatic about rubber-stamping a project that won’t lower energy bills, won’t boost energy security and will create just 27 full-time jobs …

True pragmatism means severing our reliance on expensive oil and gas that leaves British households broke, supercharges extreme weather, and leaves our energy security at the mercy of petrostates.

Is the prime minister living in a parallel universe? One where we haven’t just endured our hottest summer on record, with droughts, wildfires and, in all likelihood, the most heat-related deaths on record? And where the UN hasn’t warned that we’re on the brink of breaching the all-important 1.5 degree warming limit?

Shell will be cheering this decision but it won’t knock a penny off our energy bills, which is what’s keeping people up at night, or make a meaningful difference to our gas supply.

Jackdaw will provide around just 2% of our gas demand for roughly ten years. It has been oversold and won’t stop the decline in North Sea jobs, as it will be largely unmanned and operated remotely.

Greens demand action over abandoned animals

The Green Party on Tuesday called for tougher measures to tackle animal abandonment following incidents in which dogs were struck by vehicles in Kornos, Kofinou and Anglisides.

In a statement, the party said the incidents had once again highlighted the serious problem of abandoned animals in Cyprus.

“How much longer must stray animals pay with their lives for human irresponsibility?” the group asked.

It called on the government and relevant authorities to introduce stricter legislation and enforcement measures, including the establishment and maintenance of a register of pet owners.

The register should be regularly updated and accompanied by periodic inspections, while checks on animal microchipping should be strengthened to ensure owners can be traced, the party said.

The Greens also demanded tougher inspections and penalties for animal abandonment, alongside organised and adequately funded neutering programmes.

They called for greater support for animal shelters and stray animal care programmes, as well as the development and implementation of a national action plan to prevent and manage the problem of stray animals.

Ex-Greens co-leader urges council groups to reject Zionism policy

Exclusive: Adrian Ramsay calls conference motion a distraction and says councillors should maintain coalitions where possible

Adrian Ramsay, the former co-leader of the Greens, has urged his party’s councillors to reject the newly adopted “Zionism is racism” motion if it will help them stay in power in local government, in a fresh sign of internal dissent over the policy.

Ramsay, one of the Greens’ five MPs, said he was pleased that a number of Green council groups had already condemned the policy, which was adopted at the party’s conference and also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel.

Forever Is Now review – political study of former Irish Green leader is like The Thick of It but with morals

Eamon Ryan is shown to be principled, likable and hard working in a glowing portrait, filmed while serving in the country’s coalition government

This fly-on-the-wall documentary about the former Irish Green party leader and cabinet minister Eamon Ryan reminded me of the political satire The Thick of It – but without the cynical gags and hapless self-serving politicians. Even after you factor in the skewing effect of it being a favourable portrait, showing him in the best possible light, Ryan comes across as one of the good guys: principled, likable and extremely hard working. The film follows his final 18 months serving in Ireland’s coalition government as minister for the environment and transport before stepping down in 2025.

The title is something that Ryan’s 25-year-old son Tommy repeats over and over. “Forever … forever … forever.” Tommy is autistic and requires full-time care. When Ryan resigns from government, one of his reasons is to spend more time with Tommy. We see the pair of them at the allotment picking raspberries and walking the dog. But other than a quick glimpse of his wife, Victoria, the rest of Ryan’s family life is kept firmly behind closed doors.
