‘Promising Young Woman’: a prescient film about how elite universities shield rapists

You may have come across various reels in your Instagram feed over the past few weeks featuring the film Promising Young Woman, a feature in which Carey Mulligan plays a woman who takes revenge on the allies of rape culture, fully aware that her vendetta will cut short her promising future. The reason Emerald Fennell’s movie has returned to the zeitgeist six years after its release is that it bears striking similarities to the Cornell case, in which a former student at that prestigious university reported she had been gang-raped and assaulted by seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity.

‘Cornell protects rapists’: Outrage at the university after leniency toward accused comes to light

“Let’s defeat the patriarchy.” “Cornell protects rapists and expels protesters.” Graffiti like this appeared Monday morning on the facade of Day Hall, one of Cornell University’s administrative buildings. This is the latest sign of outrage among many students over a case that has shaken not only this elite New York State university but the entire United States — a country that is increasingly viewing with concern how sexual violence against women on college campuses is a structural problem for which no solution has been found.

Cornell case: an ‘institutional betrayal’ of victims in the post #MeToo era

Ten years ago, Brock Turner, a student-athlete at Stanford University in California, was convicted of three felonies for sexual assault against an unconscious woman whom he attacked, in front of witnesses, behind a trash container after a fraternity party on campus.
