Azhar Abbas elected AEMEND president

18 October 2026 at 16:19

KARACHI – The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) has elected Azhar Abbas as its president and Tariq Mahmood as general secretary, according to a statement issued by the association.

Muhammad Usman and Mian Tahir were elected vice presidents, Rehan Ahmed and Nadeem Jamal joint secretaries, and Shahab Mahmood finance secretary.

The association’s general council elected the remaining executive committee members during meetings in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

The members include Zahid Mazhar, Masoom Rizvi, Mohsin Raza, Mubarak Ali, Kamran Lashari, Humayun Saleem, Muhammad Noshad Ali Khan, Khawaja Hasnain and Razaq Sarohi.

The council also expressed serious concern over what it described as the deteriorating state of press freedom in Pakistan and the growing use of government powers and state institutions to restrict independent journalism.

It voiced concern over the alleged misuse of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) and the actions of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).

The council criticised the conduct of certain YouTubers who, it said, appeared to pursue personal or political agendas under the guise of journalism. However, it stressed that the actions of a few individuals could not justify restrictions on the media as a whole.

The council resolved that the newly elected executive committee would hold detailed discussions on the country’s media situation before issuing a comprehensive statement outlining the association’s position.

Rakhi Sawant faces non-bailable warrant in 2010 suicide case

18 October 2026 at 16:15

An Indian court in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, has issued a non-bailable warrant against well-known actress Rakhi Sawant in connection with a 2010 suicide case.

According to Indian media reports, the case relates to alleged derogatory remarks made by Sawant about a man on her television programme, Rakhi Ka Insaaf, who later allegedly died by suicide.

The report stated that an Additional District and Sessions Judge at a fast-track court issued the warrant on October 16 after the actress repeatedly failed to appear before the court. Police have been directed to arrest Sawant and produce her before the court.

According to Indian media, public prosecutor Mridul Kant Srivastava said the next hearing in the case is scheduled for December 1.

The case concerns the death of Laxman Ahirwar, a resident of the Hansari Prem Nagar area of Jhansi, who died on November 10, 2010.

Following his death, his mother, Savitri, filed a complaint alleging that Sawant had used insulting and inappropriate language about her son during an episode of her television programme broadcast in October 2010.

The allegations and the circumstances surrounding the case are subject to judicial proceedings.

Bilawal says KP governor’s rule, emergency could end if opposition agrees on joint anti-terrorism plan

18 October 2026 at 14:36

KARACHI – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Sunday that the governor’s rule and emergency imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) could be lifted if the opposition agreed to work with the government on a joint strategy to combat terrorism.

Speaking to the media during a visit to the Karsaz Monument on the 19th anniversary of the Karsaz bombing, Bilawal called for political unity and consensus to address the country’s worsening security challenges.

“If the opposition is ready to fight terrorism and we agree on a plan, then the emergency and governor’s rule in KP can come to an end,” he said, urging opposition parties to engage with the federal government and other political stakeholders to develop a unified counterterrorism policy.

His remarks came a week after the federal government imposed governor’s rule and an emergency in KP, citing what it described as the provincial government’s deliberate disengagement from counterterrorism efforts. The decision followed a mobilisation campaign and protest march by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which governs KP and is in opposition at the federal level, demanding the release of its jailed founder, Imran Khan.

Call for a united front against terrorism

Bilawal warned that Pakistan was facing security challenges across multiple regions, saying terrorist attacks were taking place from Khyber to Khuzdar.

Referring to developments following the change of government in Afghanistan in 2021, he criticised the then Pakistani government’s policy of allowing members of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to return from Afghanistan and resettle in areas including Swat, Malakand and the former tribal districts.

He also claimed that TTP members who had been imprisoned in Pakistan were released during that period.

“Today, Pakistan is suffering the losses from these wrong decisions,” Bilawal said, arguing that the consequences of those policies had contributed to the current security challenges.

He added that the country was once again facing threats to its stability, with security personnel, law enforcement officials and civilians being targeted in terrorist attacks.

Bilawal criticises KP government’s counterterrorism approach

The PPP chairman criticised the KP government’s response to terrorism, claiming that the province was experiencing the highest number of terrorist incidents while its chief minister, Sohail Afridi, had indicated that he would not confront the militants.

“If the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister was not ready to defend his homeland and fight those terrorists, then the PPP is ready to fight them,” Bilawal said, defending his party’s support for the federal government’s decision to impose governor’s rule in the province.

He maintained that the PPP was prepared to work with all political forces to combat terrorism and stressed that the fight required collective national commitment rather than the efforts of a single party or institution.

Calls for a new National Action Plan

Bilawal said Pakistan’s experience had demonstrated that counterterrorism efforts were most effective when the government, political parties, security institutions and the public worked together.

He recalled that when the PPP was in government in 2008, it had sought to build public support for counterterrorism operations and pursue institutional reforms to address the threat.

He said national unity remained essential to defeating militant groups and warned that the country would struggle to achieve lasting success without a common strategy.

Referring to his recent address to the National Assembly, Bilawal said he had called for a new National Action Plan and a broader political consensus on combating terrorism. He also invited opposition parties to participate in consultations aimed at developing a joint policy.

“If we can create such an environment, we will be in a better position to fight terrorists,” he said.

Opposition urged to participate in electoral reforms

The PPP chairman also discussed efforts to strengthen the democratic system through electoral reforms. He said the federal government had decided to establish an electoral reforms committee and that the opposition had been invited to participate.

“If they say that democracy is weak in this country, then they should help us to strengthen it,” Bilawal said, urging opposition parties to engage constructively with the government on institutional and democratic reforms.

He reiterated that political engagement and consensus were necessary not only to improve democratic institutions but also to develop a coordinated response to terrorism.

Bilawal said the PPP had yet to achieve the Pakistan envisioned by former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, but the party continued to work towards that goal.

PPP’s position on the creation of new provinces

Responding to a question about the creation of new provinces or administrative units, Bilawal said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was aware of the positions held by the PPP and President Asif Ali Zardari on the matter.

He clarified that the issue was not one to be decided solely by the president, stressing that any new province should be created in accordance with the Constitution and the law and with the agreement of the relevant provincial assembly.

Bilawal said the PPP supported the creation of new provinces where there was genuine consensus and the proposal was not being used for political purposes.

Citing Gilgit-Baltistan as an example, he referred to the consensus within its legislative assembly on the demand for constitutional rights.

“If we really want this to be implemented, it must only be implemented where the provinces want this,” he said, emphasising that constitutional procedures and the wishes of the relevant regions should guide any such decision.

18 October 2026 at 13:29

ISLAMABAD – World Space Week 2026 was celebrated for the first time in Narowal with the support of the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), under the vision of Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, to promote awareness of space science, scientific research and modern technology among young people.

Addressing the closing ceremony in Narowal, Ahsan Iqbal announced that Pakistan’s first astronaut would depart on a space mission from a Chinese space centre on November 25. He also said Pakistan had set a target of landing on the Moon by 2035, adding that cooperation with China would help the country reach new heights in space exploration.

The federal minister highlighted the growing role of space technology in various sectors, including agriculture, communications, climate change monitoring, education and national security. He said space research was essential for future development, scientific discoveries and the advancement of human knowledge.

Referring to the teachings of the Holy Quran, Iqbal said Islam encourages people to reflect on the creation of the universe. He stressed the need to foster scientific curiosity, research and a passion for knowledge among young people.

He also noted that Muslim scientists had historically made significant contributions to astronomy and scientific research, saying Pakistan needed to regain a leading position in knowledge and research.

Highlighting the achievements of the University of Narowal, Iqbal cited its first-place finish at the Islamabad Science Festival as evidence of the potential of Pakistan’s youth. He said young Pakistanis were achieving distinction through education and research, including students who had previously faced financial barriers to higher education.

To further encourage interest in space science, the minister announced plans to establish Pakistan’s first space museum at the University of Narowal. The initiative aims to promote scientific awareness and inspire young people to explore emerging fields of technology.

Iqbal said the government was working to provide young people with greater opportunities in advanced technology and emerging scientific disciplines, enabling them to contribute to Pakistan’s progress through knowledge, innovation and research.

The Bank of Punjab Leads Structuring of PKR 17 Billion Islamic Project Finance Facility for Novacare Hospital Islamabad

18 October 2026 at 13:02

The Bank of Punjab (BOP) marked the financial close of a PKR 17 billion Syndicated Islamic Project Finance Facility for Novacare Hospitals (Private) Limited at a signing ceremony bringing together the project’s sponsors, management and participating financial institutions.

The facility will support the development of a 250-bed tertiary care hospital and a feeder clinic in Islamabad. Novacare Hospitals (Private) Limited is Pakistan’s first and only hospital to be affiliated with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. With sponsors contributing PKR 11.5 billion in equity, the total project cost is approximately PKR 28.5 billion.

The transaction represents Pakistan’s first greenfield hospital financed under a Syndicated Islamic Project Finance Facility, establishing a precedent for mobilising long-term financing for healthcare infrastructure.

BOP arranged and structured the facility as Intercreditor Agent and acted as Joint Mandated Lead Advisor & Arranger alongside United Bank Limited and Habib Bank Limited, with Pak China Investment Company Limited as Co-Arranger., PAIR Investment Company Limited and Pak Libya Holding Company Limited participated as syndicate financiers. BOP’s financing commitment of PKR 5.8 billion reflects its confidence in the project and its importance to Pakistan’s healthcare sector.

Mr. Hans Kedzierski, CEO of Novacare Hospitals (Private) Limited, thanked the participating institutions for their support and shared Novacare’s vision of delivering international standards of healthcare in Pakistan, with patient care and empathy at the heart of its mission.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Zafar Masud, President & CEO of The Bank of Punjab, said: “Healthcare touches every one of us. At some point, we have needed care for ourselves or someone we love, and we understand the difference that a good hospital and a skilled doctor can make. That is why Novacare has always meant more to us than a financing transaction. It is an investment in the care, dignity and wellbeing of the people this hospital will serve.”

Commenting on the financing, he added: “Bringing this project to financial close required conviction from the sponsors and close collaboration among all six participating institutions. Together, we have established a financing framework that we hope will make it easier for future healthcare projects in Pakistan to access long-term capital. If the next hospital finds its path to financing easier because of what we have achieved here, that will be a lasting contribution.”

Mr. Masud congratulated Novacare’s sponsors, Board and management, and acknowledged the contribution of the participating institutions, advisers, legal counsel and BOP’s Investment Banking and Project Finance teams.

“Financial close is an important milestone, but the real achievement will be the day the hospital opens its doors to patients. We look forward to supporting Novacare through construction and commissioning, and to seeing this vision become a place of healing and hope,” he said.

The transaction underscores BOP’s commitment to financing projects that strengthen essential infrastructure and deliver lasting economic and social benefits.

TTP-linked accounts circulate old footage to portray false security narrative in KP

18 October 2026 at 12:30

ISLAMABAD – TTP-linked and Afghan-based media accounts are circulating old videos with misleading captions to portray past incidents as current developments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), raising concerns about the spread of misinformation and attempts to create fear and confusion among the public.

The circulation of recycled footage comes amid reports of a decline in terrorist activity across KP over the past week. The new administration has signalled renewed resolve to combat terrorist networks, creating a more conducive environment for counterterrorism efforts. Against this backdrop, the resurfacing of old videos appears aimed at portraying a misleading picture of the current security situation.

Claims circulating on social media that Pakistani soldiers are surrendering in groups have been described as baseless. Reposting old footage alongside sensational captions does not establish that the alleged incidents are taking place at present. The date, location and original context of such videos must be verified before they can be treated as evidence of current events.

Meanwhile, TTP-linked, PTI-associated and Afghan-based accounts have been accused of amplifying these narratives through the repeated circulation of old or misleading footage. Critics argue that such content can distort public understanding, undermine confidence in security institutions and create an exaggerated impression of instability.

The issue highlights the importance of verifying videos through reliable sources before sharing them, particularly during sensitive security developments. Establishing the original date and location of footage is essential to distinguishing genuine reporting from recycled material intended to influence public perception.

As counterterrorism efforts continue in KP, claims circulating online should be assessed against independently verified information rather than sensational captions or unsubstantiated allegations.

18 Workers kidnapped in Armed Attack on Marble Factory in Balochistan’s Khuzdar

18 October 2026 at 11:11

KHUZDAR – Another armed attack reported at marble factory in Balochistan’s Khuzdar where gunmen stormed the facility, abducted 18 workers and escaped with two vehicles and a loader. One worker was shot and wounded during the incident.

The attack took place in the remote Nal area near Besar Mountain, around 35 to 40 kilometres from Khuzdar city, at a marble factory owned by former National Party provincial minister Sardar Aslam Bizenjo and his son, Shah Mir Bizenjo.

According to the police official, dozens of armed men arrived at the factory late Saturday night in vehicles and on motorcycles before forcibly taking away 18 workers present at the site. One worker tried to flee but was shot by the attackers, sustaining a bullet wound to his leg. The injured worker was identified as Rashid, whose condition was reported to be out of danger by medical sources.

Initial information suggests that the abducted workers belong to different areas of Khuzdar district. The assailants reportedly took two vehicles and a loader from the factory before fleeing the scene. No armed group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting.

The mass abduction raised fresh concerns about the security of workers and industrial facilities in the province, where a separate incident involving the abduction of police personnel was reported just a day earlier.

Unidentified armed men abducted 20 police personnel belonging to the Rakhshan Division from a passenger van in Mastung district, according to the report. The two incidents intensified concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan, with multiple abductions in quick succession putting renewed focus on security in the province.

Security forces have launched a search operation in the area to trace the abducted workers, while police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the attack.

PM Shehbaz targets Equal Education through Danish Schools across Pakistan

18 October 2026 at 10:38

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced plans to expand Danish Schools network across Pakistan, promising equal access to quality education for underprivileged and talented children regardless of their provincial, ethnic or socioeconomic backgrounds.

Addressing inauguration ceremony of a Danish School in Islamabad, the premier declared that no child should be deprived of quality education simply because their parents cannot afford it. He emphasized that the state must fulfil its responsibility as a mother by ensuring justice, equal rights and educational opportunities for every citizen.

The announcement comes as 27 Danish Schools are reportedly under construction across the country, marking a significant step towards expanding an education model originally introduced by the Punjab government in 2010.

Sharif said that whether a child is Punjabi, Sindhi, Baloch, Kashmiri or Pashtun, every child deserves an equal opportunity to succeed. The prime minister expressed deep concern over Pakistan’s longstanding educational divide, questioning why children from wealthy and influential families can access prestigious institutions such as Aitchison College while millions of disadvantaged children struggle to obtain even basic education.

He argued that a child’s future should be determined by talent, hard work and ability, not by the financial circumstances of their family.

Highlighting the plight of underprivileged families, the prime minister pointed to millions of talented boys and girls who remain unable to fulfil their potential because of financial hardship.

Sharif also recalled the example of a young girl from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa whose determination and love of education could not overcome the financial barriers standing in her way. His remarks underscored a central challenge facing Pakistan: ensuring that poverty does not become a permanent obstacle to educational achievement.

The prime minister questioned the disparity between children of the privileged class and those from low-income households, pointing out that the children of powerful political figures, senior officials, judges and wealthy landlords can access elite educational institutions with relative ease. Meanwhile, millions of children from Pakistan’s four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan continue to face barriers to quality schooling.

Recalling the vision behind the establishment of Danish Schools in Punjab in 2010, Shehbaz Sharif said the objective was to create an institution capable of providing education comparable to, or better than, that offered by elite institutions such as Aitchison College.

He also cited the example of an orphaned female doctor from Bahawalpur to highlight how access to educational opportunities can transform lives and help disadvantaged children overcome difficult circumstances.

PM Sharif’s announcement placed educational equality back at the centre of the national debate. The proposed expansion offers the prospect of opening new pathways for disadvantaged children who might otherwise remain excluded from quality education. However, the initiative’s ultimate success will depend on how quickly new schools become operational, how fairly deserving students are selected, and whether the institutions maintain consistent educational standards across provinces and regions.

Honda CD 70 2027 Installments Plans with Monthly Payments starting at Rs6,500

18 October 2026 at 10:14

Honda CD 70 continues to remain among the top-selling bikes despite its high price, but masses apparently prefer fuel efficiency, durability, affordable maintenance, and strong resale value.

However, with motorcycle prices remaining high with no major upgrade, buying a Honda CD 70 outright can be difficult for people managing tight budgets. For such buyers, installment plans offer an alternative, allowing them to spread the cost over several months rather than paying the full amount at once.

Honda CD 70 2027 Installment Plans

Customers can pay Rs53,300 per month for three months or Rs26,650 per month for six months, with both options advertised at zero markup. Those who prefer smaller monthly payments can consider longer repayment periods, although these plans may cost more overall.

Honda Cd 70 2027 Installments Plans With Monthly Payments Starting At Rs6500

12-month plan comes with a monthly installment of Rs16,523, while the payments fall to Rs9,861 for 24 months and Rs7,640 for 36 months. The lowest advertised monthly payment is Rs6,529 under the 48-month plan.

CD 70 is listed at Rs159,900, keeping it within reach of some buyers while remaining a considerable expense for others. Despite the price, the motorcycle continues to attract customers who value its established reputation and relatively straightforward maintenance.

Its popularity also benefits from the widespread availability of spare parts and mechanics familiar with the model. These practical advantages, along with its resale value, help explain why the CD 70 remains a familiar sight on Pakistan’s roads.

Atlas Honda remains a major player in Pakistan’s motorcycle market, with demand supported by its well-established commuter models. The company’s overall sales performance reflects the continued importance of motorcycles for everyday transportation in the country.

CD 70 remains one of its best-known models, particularly among buyers looking for a simple motorcycle for daily use. However, company-wide sales figures should not be confused with CD 70-specific sales, as a separate breakdown is needed to determine the exact number of units sold.

Is Egypt joining Pakistan, Türkiye to defend Saudi Arabia from Houthi Attacks?

18 October 2026 at 09:41

CAIRO — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi signals Cairo’s readiness to take “any necessary measures” to defend Saudi Arabia if Riyadh formally requests assistance, raising the prospect of deeper Egyptian involvement amid escalating tensions with Yemen’s Houthi movement.

Speaking at Egyptian Military Academy’s graduation ceremony in the New Administrative Capital on Saturday, el-Sisi stressed that Egypt’s commitment would be strictly defensive, insisting that Cairo had no intention of attacking another country or initiating a war.

Egypt’s House of Representatives scheduled full parliamentary session today following a request from president. The meeting has drawn attention because it comes directly after el-Sisi’s remarks on defending Saudi Arabia. Some reports suggest lawmakers could consider authorization for defensive assistance, although the precise agenda and outcome require official confirmation.

Under Article 152 of Egypt’s Constitution, declaring war or sending armed forces on combat missions abroad involves consultation with the National Defense Council and parliamentary approval by a two-thirds majority.

The immediate question is whether Cairo could move beyond political support and provide practical military assistance if Saudi Arabia comes under further attack. Potential forms of assistance could include air-defense cooperation, military advisers, logistical support or a limited deployment. These remain possibilities, not confirmed operational decisions.

El-Sisi made it clear that Cairo does not seek confrontation and would act only in defensive capacity. No confirmed announcement establishes that Saudi Arabia has formally requested Egyptian military assistance, that Egyptian forces have been deployed, or that Cairo has entered a new military campaign against the Houthis.

The stakes extend beyond bilateral relations between Cairo and Riyadh. Red Sea is key maritime corridor linking global shipping routes, while the Suez Canal remains a major source of revenue and economic importance for Egypt. Any sustained deterioration in regional maritime security could carry serious consequences for trade, shipping and Egypt’s economic interests.

Saudi Arabia probes Houthi Attack on Riyadh Airport as Missiles Travel over 1,000km

Against this backdrop, Cairo has repeatedly stressed that the security of Gulf states forms an integral part of Egypt’s national security.

Egypt condemned Houthi attacks, underscoring its opposition to threats against Saudi security and regional stability.

Egypt previously participated in the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen in 2015, with its contribution focused substantially on maritime security in the Red Sea.

Any renewed Egyptian involvement would unfold in a different regional context and could take a more limited defensive form. Whether Cairo would consider direct combat operations, maritime deployments or defensive assistance would depend on the circumstances, the nature of any Saudi request and the decisions taken by Egyptian authorities.

London erupts in Anti-Modi Protests as Indian diaspora stage Rallies

18 October 2026 at 09:26

LONDON — Tensions over India’s controversial voter-list revision spilled onto streets of London, where anti-government demonstrators and supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced off outside the Indian High Commission in a series of politically charged rallies that drew widespread attention on social media.

The protests centred on Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Demonstrators opposing exercise accused the authorities of risking exclusion of legitimate voters, while pro-Modi groups staged counter-protests in defence of the government.

“Chhappan inch ka chhota bandar”, loosely translated as “the little 56-inch monkey”, that helped propel footage of the London demonstrations across social media.

🇬🇧🇮🇳 There’s a BIG PROTEST in London by the Indian diaspora against Modi

They’re outside the Indian High Commission chanting “chhappan inch ka chhota bandar,” which means “the little 56-inch monkey.” It’s a jab at Modi, who used to talk about having a 56-inch chest.

One person even brought a small monkey with him.

The protest is over the Election Commission’s voter list revision in India.

A smaller group of Modi supporters stood on the other side of the police line.

https://t.co/0r4mv6MeV0

— Mario Nawfal (@MarioNawfal) October 17, 2026

Clips circulating on X showed protesters chanting the slogan, a satirical jab at Modi’s long-associated “56-inch chest” political image, often linked to perceptions of strength and masculinity.

The clip was shared through social media accounts including by commentator Mario Nawfal. While the slogan attracted attention, mainstream coverage of the rallies focused primarily on electoral integrity, opposition demands and the confrontation between rival diaspora groups.

The demonstrations unfolded over several days, bringing together student organisations, opposition-linked groups, activists and supporters of the Indian government.

The gathering expressed solidarity with anti-SIR protests in India, including the movement known as “Jantar Mantar 2.0”. Participants demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for the revision exercise to be scrapped.

On 16 October, another demonstration organised by the Students’ Federation of India’s UK chapter drew participants associated with the National Students’ Union of India and other groups. A smaller contingent of Modi supporters mounted a counter-protest.

The rival groups displayed Indian flags but delivered sharply contrasting messages. Anti-SIR demonstrators chanted “Azadi” and “Saare Jahaan Se Achcha”, while the counter-protesters responded with “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Modi, Modi”. A large cut-out of the prime minister was also displayed by his supporters.

The confrontation continued on 17 October at Parliament Square, where hundreds reportedly gathered near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue for a demonstration titled “Stop Vote Chori”. Organised by the youth wing of the Indian Overseas Congress, the event received support from SFI UK, Save Democracy, the South Asia Solidarity Group and other organisations. YouTuber and activist Dhruv Rathee was among the announced keynote speakers.

A smaller counter-gathering associated with India Diaspora UK and Team Bharat assembled nearby, with participants again chanting “Modi, Modi”. Police maintained separation between the two sides.

Beneath the slogans and viral footage lies a contentious dispute over how India maintains its electoral registers. Indian Election Commission says the Special Intensive Revision is intended to improve voter-list accuracy by identifying duplicate registrations, deceased voters, people who have moved and individuals who are otherwise ineligible. Eligible citizens can use established procedures to seek inclusion or challenge omissions.

Supporters of Modi defended the government’s democratic mandate and rejected the criticism levelled at the prime minister and his administration. Some argued that anti-government demonstrations on foreign soil risk damaging India’s international reputation and investor confidence.

The opposing camps therefore presented sharply different accounts of the same political dispute: one portraying the revision as a threat to electoral participation, the other defending the government and the legitimacy of its policies.

Although the scenes generated heated political exchanges, available media coverage did not report major violence at the gatherings. Police efforts centred on preventing direct confrontations between the groups.

QUETTA — Pakistani security forces dealt blow to suspected terrorist networks in Balochistan, killing eight militants in three intelligence-based operations across Quetta, Nushki and Khuzdar districts, while recovering a massive cache of explosives weighing 490 kilograms.

The coordinated operations targeted suspected hideouts and militant activity in the province, with security personnel moving swiftly to neutralise threats and prevent potential disruptions to public movement.

In Panjpai area of Quetta, security forces thwarted an attempt by militants to establish a roadblock aimed at disrupting local traffic. The ensuing action resulted in the killing of five terrorists, preventing the reported plan from proceeding.

In Nushki district, security forces tracked down a suspected terrorist hideout, triggering an intense exchange of fire. Two militants were killed during the engagement, while weapons and ammunition were recovered from the site.

Security forces launched further sanitisation operations in the affected areas to search for any remaining militants and eliminate potential threats.

The latest actions form part of Pakistan’s ongoing counterterrorism campaign under Azm-e-Istehkam, an initiative approved by the Federal Apex Committee under the National Action Plan. Security forces and law enforcement agencies remain committed to disrupting foreign-backed militant networks and combating terrorism across the country.

Over 2,000 Containers stranded as Pakistan shuts Iran Border amid ‘Security Fears’

18 October 2026 at 08:41

BALOCHISTAN – Thousands of containers sit stranded, and hundreds of trucks remain stuck, and traders face mounting uncertainty after Pakistan abruptly suspended cross-border trade with Iran.

The sudden suspension of cross-border trade with Iran triggered major disruption for businesses, leaving trail of containers stranded at Gabd-Rimdan crossing and raising fears of losses worth billions of rupees, as a wave of kidnappings intensifies security concerns in Balochistan.

The closure of the Taftan and 250 commercial border crossings between Iran and Pakistan has reportedly left thousands of trucks carrying fresh fruit and onions stranded on both sides of the border, causing significant financial losses for traders in both countries

Businesses say lack of advance notice compounded the crisis, with shipments delayed and payments already transferred to Iranian counterparts. Authorities called the shutdown a temporary security measure, but the absence of a confirmed reopening date has left the trading community facing mounting uncertainty.

Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry members raised questions over carrying goods stranded at Gabd-Rimdan alone. He warned that suspension could inflict losses worth billions of rupees on traders and businesses dependent on cross-border commerce.

A customs clearing agent at Gabd-Rimdan, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that around 65 containers cleared through his services remained stranded. He also raised concerns over incoming trucks carrying fresh food supplies from Sindh and Punjab, warning that additional shipments could become trapped if the restrictions continued.

The financial consequences could extend beyond transportation delays. According to the agent, Pakistani traders had already paid their Iranian counterparts for goods, exposing businesses to further losses as deliveries remain on hold.

Counterterrorism

The suspension was confirmed by Chagai Deputy Commissioner Bakhtiar Ismail in a post on social media platform X. He said the decision was taken for security reasons and was intended to improve border management in support of counterterrorism operations.

Balochistan government has also defended the move, citing the need to strengthen border controls, prevent smuggling and improve administrative arrangements.

Shahid Rind, the provincial government’s spokesperson and an aide to the chief minister, said the temporary closure was necessary to address security concerns on both sides of the frontier.

The trade suspension comes amid a series of serious security incidents in the province.

On Friday, at least 20 police constables were abducted by unidentified armed men in Mastung district. According to a senior provincial official who spoke to Arab News, the personnel were returning from a police recruitment centre in Kalat when armed men intercepted their passenger van in a mountainous area of Mastung.

In a separate incident a day earlier, Asad Ullah Kakar, commissioner of Balochistan’s Rakhshan Division, was abducted while travelling from Quetta through Kharan district.

Pakistan Bat first as Sri Lanka Win Toss in ODI Tri-Series Opener

18 October 2026 at 08:22

RAWALPINDI – Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first against Pakistan in the opening match of the ODI tri-series, setting the stage for an important contest between the two Asian rivals.

Men in Green begin their campaign with wicketkeeper-batter Saad Baig making his ODI debut. Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi confirmed that the youngster would bat at number four, handing him a key role in the team’s middle order.

The hosts have included an experienced pace attack alongside a batting unit featuring several established names. Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam will lead the charge at the top, while Hasan Nawaz, Salman Ali Agha and Saad Baig are expected to contribute in the middle order.

All-rounders Arafat Minhas and Faheem Ashraf add depth to the lineup, with Shaheen, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah forming Pakistan’s pace attack.

Pakistan have been dealt a setback ahead of the opening fixture, with leg-spinners Shadab Khan and Sufiyan Muqeem ruled out due to illness.

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), both players are receiving medical treatment. Their availability for the remaining matches of the tournament will be assessed later, leaving Pakistan to begin the competition without two of their spin options. The absence of the pair could place additional responsibility on Pakistan’s other bowling options as they look to restrict Sri Lanka and make the most of their home conditions.

PAKISTAN VS SRI LANKA SQUADS

Pakistan: Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Saad Baig (wk), Hasan Nawaz, Salman Ali Agha, Arafat Minhas, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Shah Afridi (c), Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah.

Sri Lanka: Avishka Fernando, Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Mendis (c/wk), Pavan Rathnayake, Sahan Arachchige, Janith Liyanage, Dasun Shanaka, Sachindu Colombage, Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka.

Afridi led squad head into the contest with a commanding record against Sri Lanka in ODI cricket. The two sides have met 160 times in the 50-over format, with Pakistan recording 96 victories compared with Sri Lanka’s 59 wins. One match ended in a tie, while four produced no result.

Pakistan enter the tournament encouraged by their recent performances in ODI series. Since 2025, they have won three of their last four series, defeating South Africa, Sri Lanka and Australia. Their only series defeat during that period came against Bangladesh in an away three-match contest.

Green Shirts will also draw confidence from their recent 2–1 victory over Sri Lanka in the T20I series. They will now aim to carry that momentum into the 50-over format and establish an early advantage in the competition.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have struggled for consistency in recent ODI outings, winning only one of their last five matches. The Islanders will be keen to put those results behind them, respond to their T20I series loss and make a strong start against Pakistan.

ODI tri-series features Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England, with matches scheduled in Rawalpindi and Lahore. The opening encounter provides both sides with an opportunity to build early momentum, while Pakistan will look to use home advantage to strengthen their position in the competition.

Apna Ghar Housing Scheme Explained: The Actual Cost of 20-Year Home Loan

18 October 2026 at 07:51

ISLAMABAD – Government-backed Apna Ghar housing scheme offers an easy way to get your own residence, but rising interest rates in the second decade could nearly double the total repayment cost.

Apna Ghar Scheme is being viewed as opportunity for those looking to get their houses through long-term financing. However, a closer look at the repayment structure suggests that a house worth Rs1 crore today could cost borrowers nearly Rs2 crore over the next 20 years, depending on how interest rates evolve.

Borrowers get a 20-year loan, with an interest rate of 5% for the first 10 years. For the remaining decade, the rate is linked to the prevailing KIBOR, plus an additional 2% or 3%, depending on the bank.

First 10 Years equals nearly Rs8Million

Consider a property valued at Rs1 crore (10million). Based on the estimates, the borrower’s monthly installment during the first decade would be approximately Rs66,000. Over 10 years, total payments would reach around Rs79 Lac, including interest.

Despite making these payments for a decade, the borrower would still owe the bank approximately Rs62 Lac. This remaining balance becomes crucial when the financing enters its second phase, where repayments could rise significantly if market interest rates increase.

The Second Decade

In second phase, the interest rate would depend on KIBOR and the bank’s applicable margin. For example, consider a scenario in which the prevailing rate is 10%, with an additional 3% margin, bringing the effective interest rate to 13%. If the rate rises further to 14%, the borrower could face a higher monthly installment.

A 14% interest rate would push the monthly payment to approximately Rs96,000. Over the next 10 years, total payments could reach around Rs1.1 crore.

When this amount is added to around Rs79 lakh paid during the first decade, the total repayment comes to roughly Rs1.9 crore. A house worth Rs1 crore today could require nearly Rs2 crore in loan repayments over 20 years under this scenario.

The financial picture, however, is not limited to the cost of borrowing. If the property’s value increases in line with inflation, a house worth Rs1 crore today could theoretically be valued between Rs6-7 crore after 2 decades.

That projection could make the scheme attractive to people seeking long-term homeownership, particularly if their primary objective is to secure a place to live while building property wealth over time.

However, this future valuation is estimate, not a actual return. Actual property prices depend on location, demand, economic conditions, taxes, maintenance costs and other market factors. Inflation-linked appreciation is not assured.

The scheme presents opportunity for families who want to own a home but cannot afford to purchase one outright. The initial 5% financing rate offers a degree of predictability during the first decade, while the second phase introduces uncertainty through its link to market rates.

Those looking to apply should therefore assess not only the initial installment but also whether they can afford significantly higher payments in the future. They should also account for any required down payment, bank fees, insurance or takaful, taxes and other charges, which may increase the overall cost of homeownership.

DISCLAIMER: The figures above are estimates, not a verified official repayment schedule. Actual installments and total costs will depend on the scheme’s applicable terms, the financed amount, repayment method and the interest-rate reset mechanism.

GMSA owner Rehan Ashraf shot dead chasing his stolen SUV in Faisalabad

18 October 2026 at 07:29

FAISALABAD – A car theft incident turns deadly for Rehan Ashraf, owner of the GMSA company, after he was allegedly shot dead while attempting to recover his stolen Toyota Cygnus SUV.

The incident occured on October 17, during a routine dinner outing at the city’s Chenab Club. According to the First Information Report (FIR), Rehan Ashraf arrived at Chenab Club around 9:00 pm with his brother Muhammad Hassan Ashraf and other friends. The group visited the eatery in a white Toyota Cygnus registered in Islamabad.

After handing over the vehicle and its keys to valet parking attendant, the group entered club for dinner. However, before they could begin their meal, alerts from the vehicle’s tracking device reportedly started indicating that the car was being switched on and off. What followed was desperate attempt to recover the stolen vehicle, but it ended in the businessman’s death.

According to the complaint submitted by Muhammad Hassan Ashraf, the group immediately rushed back to the parking area after receiving the tracker alerts. They were shocked to discover that the Toyota Cygnus was not there. The valet attendant who had been entrusted with the vehicle and its keys took the SUV.

The complainant said he promptly contacted the vehicle tracking company and called Police Emergency 15 to report the incident. The tracking company began sharing the vehicle’s location, enabling Rehan and his companions to pursue it in another car.

The live tracking information led them towards Jaranwala Road, near Bijli Ghar Stop, where the stolen vehicle was reportedly found trapped in slow-moving traffic opposite a UBL Bank branch.

Traffic in the area was moving slowly amid construction work associated with the Metro project, providing the group with an opportunity to catch up with the vehicle.

Rehan Ashraf got out of the vehicle and rushed towards his stolen Toyota Cygnus. His companions followed just a few steps behind. As he approached the vehicle, Rehan allegedly shouted at the man to know why he was taking his car. Two unidentified men got out of the vehicle during the confrontation. One of them allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired at Rehan.

The bullet struck him on the right side of his neck, causing him to collapse. The suspects allegedly fled the scene while brandishing their weapons, heading towards Bijli Ghar and leaving the stolen vehicle behind or escaping its immediate vicinity.

Rehan was rushed towards a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.  This also raised questions about whether the vehicle’s theft involved a breach of trust, prior planning or the possible involvement of additional individuals.

Faisalabad Police registered a case on the complaint of Rehan Ashraf’s brother, Muhammad Hassan Ashraf. FIR mentions Sections 392 and 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, relating to robbery and murder, respectively.

The complaint identifies two unidentified individuals as the alleged perpetrators of the shooting and states that the complainant and other eyewitnesses would be able to identify them if they were brought before them.
