What Should You Consider Before Buying a Mattress?

The most useful mattress comparison looks beyond the brand name and focuses on the features that influence everyday use.

Firmness and comfort: Decide whether you prefer a soft, medium-firm, or firm surface. If possible, test the mattress in your usual sleeping position.

Materials and construction: Review the foam formulation, spring type, comfort layers, and overall mattress design.

Dimensions and thickness: Always check dimensions that fit your bed frame and meet your requirements.

Durability: Consider the materials, construction quality, expected usage, and care instructions.

Warranty: Check the duration, exclusions, and conditions for making a claim.

Delivery and after-sales support: Confirm delivery arrangements, return conditions, and the availability of assistance if an issue arises.

These factors provide a more reliable basis for choosing a mattress than relying on advertising claims alone.

What Determines the Mattress Price in Pakistan?

The mattress price in Pakistan varies according to size, construction, materials, thickness, and warranty. Promotional offers and availability can also affect the final cost.

Price factor What to compare
Size Single, double, queen, or king
Construction Foam, memory foam, spring, pocket spring, or hybrid
Materials Foam formulation, springs, and comfort layers
Thickness Overall height and internal construction
Warranty Duration, exclusions, and claim requirements
Delivery Charges, delivery area, and scheduling
Additional features Cooling materials or specialised comfort layers

For a fair comparison, evaluate mattresses of similar sizes and construction. Comparing a basic foam mattress with a premium pocket-spring model may not provide a meaningful picture of value.

You should check current prices through official websites or authorised retailers, as prices and promotions can change. For imported brands such as TEMPUR and Casper, additional delivery and import costs may also affect affordability.

Iran refuses to Send Enriched Uranium abroad amid negotiations with US

21 October 2026 at 11:49

TEHRAN – Iran delivered defiant message in meeting with Field Marshal Asim Munir’s high-stakes diplomatic mission to Tehran, saying that not even a single particle of its enriched uranium will leave the country and ruling out negotiations with the United States until its demands are met.

Reports in Iranian media said the uncompromising position emerged during series of crucial meetings between Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Iran’s top political and security leadership, as Islamabad intensifies efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.

During his visit, Field Marshal Asim Munir held separate talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also accompanied the Pakistani military chief.

Mohsen Rezaei categorically rejected any possibility of transferring Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile abroad. According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, Rezaei told Field Marshal Asim Munir that the country’s enriched nuclear material was a national asset belonging to the Iranian people and would remain exclusively within Iran.

The statement draws a red line around one of the most contentious issues in the Iran-US confrontation, leaving little room for compromise on the removal of enriched nuclear material.

The declaration follows remarks by US Vice President JD Vance earlier this month, who demanded a reduction in Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities as part of efforts to end the eight-month-long conflict.

Washington, Israel, and other Western governments have repeatedly accused Tehran of enriching uranium to 60 percent purity with the potential objective of developing nuclear weapons. Iran has consistently rejected these allegations, insisting that its nuclear activities are not intended for weapons development.

The nuclear warning was accompanied by an equally uncompromising diplomatic message. Iranian officials informed Field Marshal Asim Munir that negotiations with Washington would remain off the table unless Tehran’s demands were accepted.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reportedly told the Pakistani military chief that the United States could not expect Iran to restore confidence or reopen the Strait of Hormuz without first fulfilling seven conditions.

Among the major demands outlined by Tehran were immediate end to the US blockade of Iranian ports, complete removal of economic sanctions on Iranian crude oil exports and end to military operations and hostilities across all regional fronts.

The remaining conditions were not detailed in the reported account.

Pakistan already played major role in previous efforts to bring the warring sides to the negotiating table. In June, Islamabad’s mediation efforts helped secure an interim peace understanding between Iran and the United States. However, the diplomatic breakthrough proved short-lived when hostilities resumed just weeks later, preventing the agreement from being implemented.

Diplomatic sources say the latest trip marks Field Marshal Asim Munir’s fourth official visit to Tehran since the ceasefire, reflecting Pakistan’s continued involvement in attempts to resolve the crisis.

TikTok star Rajab Butt’s Land Cruiser seized over Fake Number Plate

21 October 2026 at 10:51

LAHORE – A Land Cruiser owned by TikTok star Rajab Butt has been seized by Lahore police over fake and unauthorized number plate on the vehicle.

The action was taken by Sundar police near NFC Bridge, where officers intercepted the Land Cruiser during an ongoing operation against vehicles carrying fake, illegal and non-standard registration plates.

A spokesperson for the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations said the SUV was being driven by a man identified as Musa Khan, who failed to provide explanation regarding the suspicious number plate.

After this discovery, police registered First Information Report (FIR) against the driver and shifted the luxury SUV to the police station for further legal proceedings.

DIG Operations spokesperson stated that the seized Land Cruiser belongs to well-known YouTuber Rajab Butt, bringing the social media celebrity into the spotlight once again. However, police have registered the case against the driver, Musa Khan, while further legal proceedings concerning the vehicle’s ownership and registration details remain underway.

Authorities have not announced any criminal charges against Rajab Butt personally in connection with the incident.

The incident comes amid an intensified campaign by Lahore police targeting vehicles displaying fake, unauthorized and non-standard number plates. According to police officials, a staggering 1,508 FIRs have already been registered as part of the citywide operation, highlighting the scale of the crackdown.

Law enforcement authorities maintain that vehicles carrying suspicious registration plates pose serious challenges to crime prevention and identification efforts.

Google backs Pakistan’s Next-Gen of Tech Innovators through ‘Pehla Qadam’ Bootcamp at LUMS

21 October 2026 at 11:13

LAHORE – Pakistan’s growing reputation as emerging Tech powerhouse gets boost as Google brought its industry experts to Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) amid the country’s potential to develop globally successful mobile applications and compete in multibillion-dollar digital economy.

Organised by Google Developers Group (GDG) Lahore at the LUMS Centre for Entrepreneurship (LCE), Pehla Qadam brought together Google’s industry specialists, university students, emerging developers and technology enthusiasts to explore how Pakistan can transform local innovation into internationally successful digital businesses.

The initiative comes amid growing engagement between Google and Pakistan’s technology ecosystem, following the opening of the company’s first office in Karachi.

LUMS Provost Dr. Tariq Jadoon welcomed the Google delegation and congratulated the technology company on establishing its first office in Pakistan, describing an important development in the country’s expanding relationship with the global technology industry. Former Google Country Consultant and LUMS faculty member Badar Khushnood facilitated GDG Lahore’s efforts to bring the event to the university.

The visiting delegation was led by Emre Dogan, Farhan Qureshi and Fasieh Mehta, alongside specialists who shared practical insights into application development, digital advertising, monetisation, artificial intelligence and international market expansion. The discussions reinforced a powerful message: Pakistan has the talent to create digital products capable of reaching millions of users worldwide.

The enormous scale of the global app industry was among the biggest highlights of the event. According to Sensor Tower statistics presented during the bootcamp, worldwide consumer spending on in-app purchases reached an impressive $167 billion in 2025, reflecting annual growth of 10.6 percent. Meanwhile, approximately 149 billion applications were downloaded globally, with users spending a staggering 5.3 trillion hours on mobile apps.

These figures show tremendous commercial opportunities available to Pakistani developers, startups and technology companies seeking to establish a stronger presence in international markets. With the right combination of innovation, technical expertise and business strategies, Pakistani developers could capture a greater share of this expanding digital economy.

One of the most encouraging examples presented at the bootcamp was the international success of Pakistani game development company Game District. Its mobile title, My Supermarket Simulator, recorded more than 60 million year-to-date downloads, demonstrating that applications developed in Pakistan can attract massive audiences beyond national borders.

The success story highlighted the country’s ability to produce competitive digital products while showcasing the commercial potential of its gaming and software development industries.

Other Pakistani studios were also recognised for reaching international audiences, reflecting the growing global footprint of the country’s technology sector.

Rather than focusing exclusively on technical development, the bootcamp provided participants with a broader understanding of what it takes to build a successful digital enterprise. Google experts delivered sessions on identifying market demand, attracting users, generating advertising revenue, improving customer retention and distributing applications through Google Play.

The discussions encouraged young developers to look beyond conventional career paths and explore entrepreneurship, product development and international business opportunities.

For students preparing to enter the professional world, the event offered a practical perspective on how a university project or startup idea could evolve into a profitable global application.

The event also sheds light at transformative potential of artificial intelligence in software development. During a dedicated session on Google Antigravity, participants explored how AI-powered tools can simplify coding workflows, accelerate application development and improve software testing.

The technology could be particularly valuable for young Pakistani entrepreneurs and smaller development teams seeking to build competitive products with limited resources. By adopting advanced AI tools, emerging developers could potentially reduce development time, improve efficiency and bring innovative products to international markets more quickly.

LUMS event is part of a wider series of technology-focused engagements planned by Google’s visiting delegation across Pakistan. The upcoming activities include Think Apps, Google’s flagship event dedicated to the mobile app ecosystem, bringing further attention to the opportunities available in software development and digital entrepreneurship.

The company is also preparing for Pakistan’s first-ever YouTube Festival, which will celebrate the country’s expanding content creation industry and the growing influence of Pakistani digital creators. These initiatives show increasing opportunities for collaboration between Pakistan’s technology community and international industry leaders.

With global digital platforms, increasingly accessible AI tools and a growing pool of skilled developers, Pakistani entrepreneurs have new opportunities to transform creative ideas into products serving international audiences.

Islamabad Local Govt Elections on December 20 as ECP shares Polling Schedule

21 October 2026 at 10:36

ISLAMABAD – After years of uncertainty, and repeated delays, Islamabad is finally heading towards major electoral showdown, with Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announcing December 20 as the polling date for the long-awaited local government elections in the federal capital.

The announcement sets stage for an intense political contest, with major political parties preparing to battle for control of grassroots governance in Islamabad. For thousands of residents who have waited years for elected local representatives, the elections could mark a crucial turning point in addressing longstanding civic problems and restoring democratic representation at the local level.

Election Commission has formally launched the electoral process, setting deadlines for the submission and scrutiny of nomination papers, along with appeals against decisions made by returning officers.

According to the officially announced schedule, aspiring candidates will have five days to submit their nomination papers, beginning November 2.

Islamabad Local Government Election Schedule

Electoral process Dates
Submission of nomination papers November 2–6
Scrutiny of nomination papers November 9–13
Appeals against returning officers’ decisions November 14–18
Polling day December 20

During the scrutiny process, election officials will examine candidates’ credentials, eligibility, and nomination documents to ensure compliance with electoral laws.

Candidates whose nomination papers are rejected, or who wish to challenge returning officers’ decisions, will be able to file appeals between November 14 and November 18.

Beyond the political competition, the December 20 elections carry significant implications for the everyday lives of Islamabad’s residents. An elected local government could help decentralise administrative responsibilities and strengthen public oversight of essential municipal services.

From repairing broken roads and improving sanitation to ensuring reliable water supplies and functioning streetlights, local representatives are expected to play a crucial role in tackling neighbourhood-level problems.

The restoration of grassroots democracy could also provide residents with a more direct channel to raise complaints, demand accountability, and participate in decisions affecting their communities.

Pakistan partially Reopens Iran Border, but LPG Imports remain Blocked

21 October 2026 at 10:24

ISLAMABAD – A day after key meetings in Tehran, Pakistan on Wenesday partially reopened its border with Iran after days of trade disruption, but the continued suspension of imports has raised fears of a worsening LPG shortage.

Traders however, claim that around 1,500 gas-carrying vehicles remain stranded on the Iranian side. The situation sparked concerns over rising LPG prices in major Pakistani cities, including Lahore and Karachi. The reopening comes amid diplomatic engagements between Islamabad and Tehran, including Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s recent visit to Iran, as traders press Pakistani authorities to restore the movement of essential imports.

Despite the partial relief, uncertainty continues to surround the border situation, with Pakistani traders reporting restrictions on imports while Iranian officials insist that bilateral trade exchanges remain operational.

Pakistani authorities have temporarily permitted export shipments through border crossings in Balochistan, days after commercial traffic was suspended on Saturday. Kech and Chagai officials confirmed that exports had resumed while imports from Iran remained suspended.

However, the government has yet to issue any formal notification confirming the reopening or outlining when normal commercial activity will resume.

The initial border closure left hundreds of cargo vehicles stranded on both sides, disrupting the movement of goods and creating serious difficulties for traders dependent on cross-border commerce.

The most alarming consequence of the continuing restrictions is the reported disruption of LPG supplies to Pakistan. A big part of Pakistan’s LPG consumption depended on supplies from Iran, warning that prolonged restrictions could trigger a serious energy supply crisis.

The trade disruption has taken on greater significance following Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s diplomatic engagements in Tehran. Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported that the border crossings remained closed until at least 9pm on Tuesday, despite what the agency described as an announcement by the Pakistani army chief regarding their reopening.

Fars further claimed that Pakistani customs authorities had not reopened the crossings despite discussions between the two countries.

Iranian report raised questions about the implementation of reopening arrangements, particularly as traders subsequently confirmed that only exports had been allowed to resume. No formal Pakistani government notification clarifying the status of imports had been issued at the time of the traders’ statements.

Punjab University 2-Year BA, MA Exams may resume after HEC Ban

21 October 2026 at 09:46

LAHORE – University of the Punjab moves towards restoring private Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) examinations, offering fresh hope to working students and those living in remote areas.

PU formally approached Speaker of the Punjab Assembly and the Higher Education Commission (HEC), seeking approval to revive the private examination system that once enabled countless students to earn university degrees without attending regular classes.

According to university’s registrar, Punjab University Syndicate passed resolution in favour of restoring private BA and MA examinations, amid educational challenges created by the termination of these private programmes.

The university argued that the closure of private BA and MA programmes effectively shut doors of higher education on a large segment of society, particularly students who cannot afford the time or financial burden of attending universities regularly.

For years, private examinations provided an important educational lifeline to students from rural and underdeveloped areas, allowing them to pursue university degrees despite limited access to higher education institutions. The system was important for working professionals, daily-wage earners and individuals supporting their families, who could continue their studies while managing employment and financial responsibilities.

PU Syndicate stressed that restoring private examinations would help remove barriers preventing thousands of deserving students from pursuing higher education.

Members urged the Punjab Assembly to allow the university to resume private BA and MA examinations, emphasising the importance of making university education accessible to people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

The development comes two years after HEC imposed restrictions on private BA and MA degree programmes, ending longstanding educational route for students who could not enrol in regular university programmes. Punjab University’s latest initiative has renewed hopes that this pathway could be restored, potentially benefiting students who had abandoned their academic ambitions due to financial, professional or geographical constraints.

However, the private BA and MA examinations have not yet been officially restored, and their revival will depend on approval from the relevant authorities.

Pakistan, Maldives mark 60 Years of Ties with 20 Agreements, $200 Million Trade Ambition

21 October 2026 at 09:18

ISLAMABAD/MALE – Pakistan and the Maldives inked 20 landmark agreements covering defence, maritime security, AI and trade, with an ambitious target to boost bilateral commerce from $13.9 million to $200 million within two years during President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Islamabad.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosted Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in Islamabad, marking the first visit by a Maldivian head of state to Pakistan in 11 years. The historic engagement, coinciding with 60 years of diplomatic relations, saw both countries agree to increase bilateral trade from a modest $13.9 million to an ambitious $200 million within just two years, representing a nearly 14-fold increase.

Pakistan Maldives Mark 60 Years Of Ties With 20 Agreements 200 Million Trade Ambition

From defence cooperation and maritime security to digital infrastructure and healthcare, the agreements signal Islamabad and Malé’s determination to transform decades of diplomatic friendship into a stronger economic and strategic alliance.

$200 Million Trade Breakthrough

Speaking alongside President Muizzu after the signing ceremony, PM Shehbaz declared that the relationship between Pakistan and the Maldives was entering a new phase of cooperation. Premier acknowledged that despite six decades of friendly relations, bilateral trade remained far below the countries’ actual economic potential.

With current trade standing at just $13.9 million, both governments have now committed to pursuing a $200 million target over the next two years. PM Shehbaz calls his talks with Maldivian president highly productive, revealing that the discussions covered economic development, defence cooperation, professional training and major international issues.

He stressed that Pakistan was determined to ensure the newly signed agreements delivered tangible results rather than remaining confined to diplomatic paperwork. The premier pledged to personally facilitate their implementation through swift decisions and stronger institutional coordination.

The sweeping package of agreements places security and emerging technologies at the heart of the renewed Pakistan-Maldives partnership. Both governments agreed to expand defence cooperation, strengthen maritime security and improve coordination between their law enforcement institutions.

The agreements also cover combating drug trafficking and other illicit activities, alongside professional training for police and civil service personnel.

PM Shehbaz offered Pakistan’s technical expertise to support the Maldives’ efforts to establish data centres, highlighting Islamabad’s growing experience in developing digital infrastructure. He said Pakistan was prepared to share professional knowledge, technological capabilities and institutional expertise with the island nation.

The agreements also seek to improve aviation connectivity, tourism, fisheries, agriculture, education, vocational training, youth development, sports and cultural exchanges.

Healthcare emerged as another major area of cooperation, with Pakistan offering to expand its medical workforce serving in the Maldives. According to PM Shehbaz, approximately 250 Pakistani doctors and paramedical professionals are already working in the island nation.

In a major environmental commitment, Pakistan announced its support for the Maldives’ ambitious plan to plant five million trees. PM Shehbaz said Islamabad would contribute 100,000 olive cuttings and another 100,000 seeds from different plant species.

Earlier, President Muizzu was accorded a ceremonial reception at the Prime Minister’s House, where contingents representing Pakistan’s three armed services presented a guard of honour. PM Shehbaz personally welcomed the visiting leader and introduced him to members of the federal cabinet.

Muizzu also met senior Pakistani officials, while the prime minister greeted the Maldivian delegation. As a symbolic gesture of friendship, the visiting president planted a sapling at the Prime Minister’s House, followed by prayers for the progress and prosperity of both nations.

The three-day visit, which began Tuesday, holds special significance as Pakistan and the Maldives commemorate six decades of diplomatic relations established in 1966.

‘Instant Justice’ or Extrajudicial Killing? Hina Parvez Butt faces heat for Celebrating Multan CCD Encounter

21 October 2026 at 09:34

LAHORE – The horrific case of teenager’s death in Multan takes major turn, with the suspect killed in an alleged police encounter before facing trial and a ruling-party lawmaker’s celebration of incident triggered storm of criticism over Punjab’s justice system.

PML-N MPA and Punjab Women Protection Authority Chairperson Hina Parvez Butt shared a post on Multan CCD encounter, praising what she called “instant justice” under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s government and it got strong condemnation from lawyers, journalists and human rights-conscious social media users.

The backlash erupted after Tauqeer, accused of running over and killing a 14-year-old worker in Multan, was reportedly shot dead during a Crime Control Department (CCD) encounter near Bahawalpur early Wednesday. The suspect had been arrested, produced before a court and placed on a three-day physical remand. Less than a day later, he was dead, leaving serious questions about how an accused person under police custody ended up losing his life before his case could be tried.

Rather than demanding an independent investigation into the encounter, Hina Parvez Butt appeared to welcome the development saying

“یہ مریم نواز صاحبہ کی حکومت ہے، یہاں فوری انصاف ملتا ہے”

The statement raised a troubling question: Since when has the death of an accused person in a police encounter become a substitute for justice? Her remarks drew criticism for appearing to equate an alleged encounter killing with justice, despite the suspect never having been convicted.

‘Vengeance, Not Justice’

Lawyer Abdul Moiz Jaferii was among those who challenged the lawmaker’s response. He argued that celebrating a crime allegedly committed in response to another crime was not justice but vengeance, describing the reaction as an admission of wrongdoing.

Barrister Abuzar Salman Niazi also delivered a sharp rebuke, questioning whether Punjab’s CCD was now expected to carry out extrajudicial killings even in cases involving deaths caused by vehicles. He criticised the glorification of encounters instead of strengthening policing, investigations and prosecutions.

Niazi said the accused deserved punishment if found guilty, but that punishment had to come through the law, not the discretion of police officers.

Journalist Naimat Khan similarly questioned how a representative of the ruling party could celebrate the alleged extrajudicial killing of someone who should have been tried in court. He warned that such actions reflected deep mistrust in the justice system and weakened the very institutions responsible for delivering justice.

‘Police Become Judge and Executioner’

Journalist Absa Komal strongly condemned both extrajudicial killings and the public celebration surrounding them. She argued that delays in judicial proceedings did not grant police the authority to kill suspects.

Absa comments highlighted the dangerous precedent such practices could establish, if people support the killing of an accused person today, how will they seek justice tomorrow if an innocent person is wrongly labelled a criminal and killed? The concern was not about defending the alleged crime against the teenage victim. It was about defending the principle that no police officer has the authority to replace a court of law.

Two Encounters within Hours fuel ‘Full Fry’ Debate

The controversy became even more intense after another suspect was reported killed in a separate incident in Islamabad. Noman, accused in a US visa fraud case connected to university student Laiba Ijaz, reportedly died during an attack on a police team.

Islamabad police claimed that four armed accomplices riding motorcycles opened fire in an attempt to free the suspect, resulting in his death. The two incidents, occurring within hours, revived debate around the expression “full fry,” a controversial term associated with fatal police encounters.

Social media user Mona Khan used the phrase while reacting to the Islamabad incident. Another user, Wasim, condemned the developments as a sign of lawlessness, questioning why people were celebrating two police encounters in such a short period. Journalist Nadia Mirza also referred to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s earlier observation that the system had collapsed.

Multan teenager’s killing was a serious crime allegation that demanded a thorough investigation, a fair trial and punishment for those found responsible. But critics say the death of the accused before trial has deprived the judicial process of the opportunity to establish guilt, examine evidence and deliver a lawful verdict.

It also raised questions about whether political praise for such encounters risks encouraging a culture in which police action is celebrated without sufficient scrutiny.

‘Pakistan Too Important to Ignore’: Marco Rubio reminds India of Islamabad’s Strategic Value to US

21 October 2026 at 08:41

WASHINGTON – Despite Indian journalist’s attempt to press Marco Rubio on terrorism allegations against Pakistan, US Secretary of State defended Washington’s engagement with Islamabad, citing Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities and strategic value while making clear that maintaining ties with the country remains essential to American foreign policy.

Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s strategic importance in American foreign policy, saying Washington must maintain ties with Islamabad because of its capabilities, geographical significance and potential role in addressing regional security challenges.

— Raza (@SocialDigitally) October 21, 2026

The remarks speak of Pakistan’s continued relevance in Washington’s diplomatic calculations, even as the Trump administration seeks to strengthen its strategic partnership with New Delhi. Rubio’s comments also signal that US engagement with Pakistan is driven by broader geopolitical realities rather than being determined solely by India’s concerns about Islamabad.

Responding to questions about his previous position on Pakistan, Rubio explained that his responsibilities as America’s top diplomat require a broader approach than the one he followed as a senator. Last year, he expressed willingness to pursue legislation restricting US security assistance to Pakistan if Islamabad was found sponsoring terrorism against India.

However, Rubio acknowledged that managing American foreign policy involves maintaining relations with countries despite differences over sensitive political and security matters. He stressed that Pakistan’s status as a nuclear-armed nation, combined with its geographical position, makes diplomatic communication with Islamabad necessary.

The statement shows important acknowledgment of Pakistan’s place in regional and international security affairs, particularly at a time when Washington is expanding its engagement with Islamabad.

Rubio also drew a comparison with India’s relations with Iran, noting that New Delhi maintains diplomatic contact with Tehran despite disagreements between Washington and the Iranian leadership. His remarks suggested that the United States must adopt a similarly pragmatic approach toward Pakistan.

Beyond recognising Pakistan’s strategic significance, Rubio highlighted the potential benefits of keeping diplomatic channels open with Islamabad. He indicated that regular communication could place Washington in a stronger position to address regional security concerns and discourage developments that might heighten tensions between Pakistan and India.

The comments suggest that American policymakers view dialogue with Islamabad as an important diplomatic instrument rather than an obstacle to their relationship with New Delhi.

Although Rubio reiterated Washington’s opposition to terrorism and its sponsors, he made clear that disagreements should not automatically prevent diplomatic engagement. His position comes amid renewed efforts by the Trump administration to strengthen relations with Pakistan following the regional tensions witnessed in 2025.

Rubio also sought to reassure Delhi that Washington’s growing engagement with Islamabad would not weaken the longstanding US-India strategic partnership. He maintained that the United States could pursue productive relations with Pakistan while continuing to deepen cooperation with New Delhi.

His comments come against the backdrop of Indian concerns over Washington’s diplomatic outreach to Islamabad under President Donald Trump. However, Rubio’s explanation made clear that American foreign policy cannot be limited to the preferences of any single regional partner. The secretary of state presented Washington’s diplomatic approach as an effort to balance competing interests while maintaining communication with countries considered important to US national security.

Pakistan and the United States strengthened counterterrorism cooperation through intelligence sharing, security dialogues and coordinated efforts against militant groups, including ISIS-K, Al-Qaeda, TTP and BLA.

A major breakthrough came in 2025 when Pakistan held ISIS-K operative Mohammad Sharifullah, implicated in the deadly 2021 Kabul airport bombing, and transferred him to US custody. President Donald Trump publicly thanked Islamabad, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio also acknowledged Pakistan’s assistance.

During the fourth Pakistan-US Counterterrorism Dialogue in Washington in August 2026, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to tackling regional terrorism, improving border security and disrupting militant networks.

Punjab Residents with Unlicensed Weapons to get 15 Days to Surrender Arms or Face Life in Prison

21 October 2026 at 08:24

LAHORE – Illegal weapons holders in Punjab could soon face life behind bars and lose their properties as the provincial government prepares to launch sweeping crackdown on unauthorised firearms, with 2 weeks proposed for voluntary surrender.

Maryam Nawaz led Punjab government is working on strict legislation that could bring severe punishment for anyone found possessing weapons without legal authorisation. Crime Control Department (CCD) reportedly completed draft ordinance proposing life imprisonment and property confiscation for violators, signalling a major escalation in the province’s campaign against illegal arms.

Under the proposed law, individuals possessing illegal weapons would be given a 15-day window to surrender their firearms voluntarily before tougher enforcement measures take effect.

Once deadline ends, those holding illegal weapons could face life imprisonment, while their properties could also be confiscated under the proposed provisions.

The draft ordinance also addresses Pakistanis living abroad, introducing a mechanism that would allow them to surrender illegal weapons through authorised representatives. The provision would enable overseas Pakistanis to comply with the proposed surrender requirements without travelling back to Pakistan.

Additional Inspector General Sohail Zafar Chattha has been tasked with supervising the weapons recovery operation across Punjab. The planned operation would focus on recovering unlawfully possessed firearms throughout the province under the CCD’s supervision.

Despite the proposed sweeping penalties, the legislation has yet to become law. CCD has finalised the ordinance and submitted it for the next stage of approval, with the Punjab governor’s consent required before implementation.
