Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of AI: ‘I’m not a doomer. I think there’s a 1% chance it will destroy us’

21 October 2026 at 20:07

Years ago, when people asked Geoffrey Hinton why he worked on artificial intelligence, he would repeat a line from J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the creators of the atomic bomb: “When you see something that is technically sweet, you go ahead and do it.”

21 October 2026 at 04:30

20 October 2026 at 04:30

Carl Cederström, sociologist: ‘Wellness has become a corporate tool. It doesn’t make you happier; just more productive’

4 October 2026 at 05:00

What happens when happiness ceases to be a desire and, instead, becomes an obligation? This is a question that Carl Cederström has been posing for years. The sociologist teaches at Stockholm Business School and is the author of several critical essays on workplace culture and the happiness industry. His popular book The Wellness Syndrome (2015) is a sharp and engaging work, co-authored with André Spicer, dean of Bayes Business School in London.

Dogs also prefer consonants: how our language shapes their brain

25 September 2026 at 17:43

Everything is contagious, even the way we listen and understand. For humans, consonants usually carry more information than vowels. This pattern appears in many languages: when a sentence is stripped down to its bones, those bones are more recognizable if consonants dominate. That is why Spanish has 23 consonants and five vowels, a ratio that holds in almost every language. It is also why people drop vowels when they want to save characters in a message. Our brains fill in the gaps more effectively.

Riding electric scooters multiplies the risk of serious injuries compared with cycling or motorcycling

24 September 2026 at 15:12

Electric scooter users face a higher risk of brain and internal organ injuries than motorcyclists and cyclists. That is what a study published this summer claims. The study analyzed data from more than 15,000 patients.
