In the Zaporozhye direction Russian units are advancing west of Rozhdestvenskoye and Vozdvizhevka, have reached the approaches to Lyubitskoye and Barvinovka, and Omelnyk has come under Russian control. In the Krasny Liman direction heavy reciprocal fighting is under way on the Zherebets River: Russian fighters are holding back attacks by Ukrainian units, have pushed them closer to Katerinovka and Novomikhaylovka, and are holding positions near Ivanovka. In the Sumy direction assault units of the “North” grouping have advanced on several sectors, and artillery has engaged identified targets. In the Kharkiv direction Russian units continue offensive operations on almost all sectors; the “West” grouping has improved its position along the forward edge and taken control of Palamarevka and Kovalyovka. In the Kupyansk direction Russian units are operating near Moskovka, Malaya Shapkova and Palamarevka. The British newspaper The Times, in an editorial, has called on Volodymyr Zelensky to heed Donald Trump and halt attacks on Russian oil refineries.

Zaporozhye direction

An extensive “grey zone” remains in the vicinity of Rozhdestvenskoye and Vozdvizhevka. Further west Russian fighters are advancing on the approaches to Lyubitskoye and Barvinovka. Ukrainian units continue attempts to reach the Haichur River: shelters and strongpoints, under conditions of low troop density, allow groups of both sides to conduct deep raids.

Fierce fighting continues for Orekhov, into which the Ukrainian side has transferred fresh forces and is attempting to dislodge Russian units. Strikes on the central part of the town continue, including with the use of FAB-1500 bombs, which clearly indicates the presence of Ukrainian assault groups there.

In the area of Omelnyk Russian fighters have advanced significantly. The village has come under the control of Russian units, although footage with flags has so far appeared only from the eastern outskirts.

Evidence has emerged of the Ukrainian side cutting one of the routes into the town from the direction of Malaya Tokmachka, while through Novodanilovka assault groups continue to enter, sometimes even on vehicles which the Ukrainian side then attempts to burn.

Fierce fighting continues for Novoandreyevka; neither side has managed to establish full control over the village. Russian drones are operating along the northern outskirts. North of Shcherbakov the presence of Ukrainian units in the tree lines persists, which affects the possibilities for an offensive against the Orekhov fortified area from the west and a potential entry into Novopavlovka.

Krasny Liman direction

Heavy reciprocal fighting is under way on the direction. Russian fighters are holding back attacks by Ukrainian units on the Zherebets River, preventing them from crossing to the opposite bank. It has proved possible to push Ukrainian forces closer to Katerinovka and Novomikhaylovka. Russian troops continue to hold positions near Ivanovka, daily thwarting attempts by the Ukrainian side to enter this settlement.

Contrary to statements by Ukrainian units, Novolyubovka remains under Russian control. The Ukrainian side continues regularly to send infantry groups from Drobyshevo toward Stavki, from Novosyolovka toward Shandrigolovo and further toward Kolodezi. Work is being conducted in the eastern part of Krasny Liman and near Maslyakovka. Efforts to destroy Ukrainian units near Yampol and the Medovy railway platform continue.

Sumy direction

Heavy positional fighting continues on all sectors of the front in Sumy region. Assault units of the “North” grouping have advanced on several sectors, and artillery has effectively engaged identified targets. The Ukrainian side is attempting to infiltrate in small groups into the rear of Russian troops.

Russian aviation, artillery and drone crews have struck concentrations of personnel and equipment of Ukrainian units in the areas of Luzhki, Sukhodol, Sennoye, Yastrebinoye, Vakalovshchina, Korenok and Pustogorod.

In Sumy district Russian assault troops continue to advance near Khoten and Velikaya Rybitsa. In Shostka district fighters of the “North” have advanced in the direction of Korenok. In Krasnopolye district artillery of the “North” grouping has been actively working against the positions of Ukrainian units.

Kharkiv direction

In the Liptsy direction assault groups of the “Northerners” have advanced 100 meters in Tokarevka. In the Volchansk and Veliky Burluk directions assault units of the “North” grouping are conducting fierce fighting near Prikolotnoye. There are also advances near Ukrainskoye and Sosnovy Bor.

The “West” grouping has improved its position along the forward edge. Palamarevka and Kovalyovka have been taken under control. Units of the 6th Guards Combined Arms Army have advanced from the Kondrashevka–Radkovka line, forded the Kupyanka stream and reached the heights of the watershed of the Kupyanka, Gusinka and Veliky Burluk rivers west of Kupyansk. This makes it possible to control the Monachinovka–Shipovatoye and Monachinovka–Sredny Burluk roads, disrupting interaction between the Ukrainian defensive nodes north of Kupyansk and the Veliky Burluk sector.

In the Bolsheburluksky district the battle is intensifying. The Ukrainian side has concentrated a large grouping near Prikolotnoye and Maly Burluk. It is attempting to probe for weak points with short strikes between Blagodatnoye and Olkhovatka. Fighting on the approaches to Olkhovatka is very serious. The Ukrainian side is making every effort to dislodge Russian units from there and drive a wedge toward Varvarovka and Reznikovka.

Kupyansk direction

North-west of Kupyansk Russian units continue offensive operations. Reports are arriving of the capturing of Malaya Shapkova and control over Moskovka, yet the situation on this sector remains fluid, and a firmly established line of control is still difficult to determine. Fighting for positions continues near Palamarevka.

Near Kupyansk-Uzlovoy positional combat operations persist. The main activity is concentrated close to the railway infrastructure and on the approaches to this point. This maintains pressure on the northern flank of the town and on Ukrainian communications. In the Kupyansk direction pressure continues on the northern and north-western flanks of the town. Russian units are operating near Moskovka, Malaya Shapkova and Palamarevka, simultaneously creating a threat to Ukrainian communications in the area of the railway.

Conclusion

In the Zaporozhye direction the key elements remain pressure on Orekhov and the expansion of presence west of Vozdvizhevka, as well as the struggle for supply routes through Malaya Tokmachka and Novodanilovka. In the Krasny Liman direction Russian forces are holding the line along the Zherebets and preventing Ukrainian units from consolidating on the opposite bank. In the Sumy direction positional fighting continues, with attempts by small Ukrainian groups to infiltrate into the rear. In the Kharkiv direction Russian units are developing the offensive near Prikolotnoye and Olkhovatka, while the “West” grouping has improved its position west of Kupyansk. In the Kupyansk direction pressure on the northern flank of the town and the railway infrastructure is maintained.

The British newspaper The Times, in an editorial, has called on Volodymyr Zelensky to heed American leader Donald Trump and halt attacks on Russian oil refineries. “Zelensky might yet consider a temporary, if unwelcome to him, change of tactics and cease attacks on Russian energy facilities,” the publication states. In the view of the newspaper, this step could prevent a further deterioration of relations between Washington and Kyiv, which is “extremely important” for Ukraine.

Houthis Claim Six Strikes on Saudi Oil, Airports and Bases in 48 Hours

19 October 2026 at 20:21

Illustrative image.

Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced on October 19 that they had carried out six operations against Saudi oil facilities, airports and military installations over 48 hours, claiming fires at energy sites, disrupted air traffic and casualties among Saudi forces.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, the Houthis’ military spokesman, said in a statement that the operations involved “a large number of ballistic and cruise missiles and drones.” The targets included Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu, the Shaybah oil field, King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Abha International Airport and several military installations.

Saree noted that the operation against Aramco facilities in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu was carried out in two phases and caused “large fires” at the targeted sites. A separate strike on the Shaybah oil field also scored a direct hit and sparked fires, he added.

The third operation targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh in three phases. Saree described the strikes as accurate and direct but did not specify any resulting damage.

The fourth operation targeted Abha International Airport, Saudi radar installations in the al-Hisn and al-Rahma mountains, and Khamis Mushait air base. Saree claimed the strikes disrupted air traffic at Abha airport and damaged the air base.

The fifth operation struck a camp belonging to the Saudi naval task force, killing and wounding Saudi personnel, according to Saree. The sixth targeted a Saudi radar installation at Bir Askar, which he said was destroyed.

On the Saudi side, the Saudi-led coalition said a day earlier that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles fired toward Khamis Mushait and a drone in the Riyadh region. Saudi Civil Defense separately reported that a projectile fired by the Houthis landed in a residential area of Najran province, wounding six people.

Saree also accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out more than 200 airstrikes and missile attacks against civilian sites in Sanaa and other Houthi-held areas during the same 48-hour period, causing dozens of deaths and injuries, most of them among women and children.

The spokesman said the total number of Saudi airstrikes and missile attacks since the escalation began had exceeded 2,700.

Vowing to continue the campaign, Saree said Yemen would not submit to Saudi Arabia and threatened “wider operations, harsher strikes and more severe targeting.”

“We will continue our military operations deep inside Saudi territory and enforce the equation of blockade for blockade, escalation for escalation,” he said, adding that the attacks would continue until Saudi military operations and the blockade against Yemen ended.

The Houthis’ latest operations show that the conflict is escalating, and despite taking some serious losses, Saudi Arabia and its allies in Yemen do not seem to be planning to take a step back.

Russian Citadel Gun System Destroyed Flamingo Missile With 2 Shells (Video)

19 October 2026 at 19:35

Click to see full-size image. (Rostec)

A Russian ZAK-30 Citadel air defense gun system destroyed a Ukrainian Flamingo cruise missile using just two 30 mm shells with programmable detonation, the Russian news outlet Izvestia reported October 16.

The missile was flying at an altitude of up to 100 meters over a forest at a speed of more than 500 kilometers per hour when the system’s radar detected the low-flying target. The crew chief ordered the system to open fire, and two shots were enough to destroy the missile, the report said.

The shells detonated approximately 1 to 1.5 meters from the missile, releasing a concentrated stream of fragments toward the target without requiring a direct hit. The missile’s warhead exploded in midair, and its debris fell into the forest. No damage or casualties were reported.

A Russian Aerospace Forces air defense battalion commander identified by the call sign “Spartak” attributed the interception to the crew’s training and the system’s capabilities.

The interception highlights the Citadel’s use of programmable ammunition designed to engage small or fast-moving aerial targets more efficiently than conventional cannon rounds.

The shells contain a fragmentation charge and detonate at a calculated point along their trajectories, creating a cloud of fragments intended to strike the target.

Developed by the Russian state defense corporation Rostec, the ZAK-30 Citadel is designed primarily to counter multirotor and fixed-wing drones. Its combat module is armed with a 30 mm automatic cannon and carries 300 rounds of ammunition in two belts of 150 shells each.

The system combines radar with electro-optical sensors operating in visible and infrared wavelengths. Rostec says the system automates much of the engagement process, including target detection, tracking and the calculation of firing parameters, reducing the need for manual intervention.

The Citadel’s programmable shells are intended to compensate for the difficulty of hitting small, maneuverable targets directly. Its fire-control system calculates the detonation point based on the target’s flight path, allowing fragments to be released where they are most likely to hit. Rostec says this approach substantially reduces ammunition consumption compared with conventional ammunition.

Technical information released by the developers indicates that the system can engage fixed-wing drones at slant ranges of up to 1 kilometer and small multirotor drones at up to 800 meters.

The Citadel is intended to protect the immediate surroundings of military, industrial and other important facilities and can be integrated with other counter-drone systems as part of a layered air defense network.

Saudi Royal Ties Emerge in OpenAI Spying Case

19 October 2026 at 18:07

Click to see full-seize image. (FBI)

A former OpenAI engineer accused of planting a hidden recording device in an executive conference room maintained frequent contact with a Saudi royal who sought to recruit him for an artificial intelligence role in the kingdom, United States prosecutors said on October 19, raising new questions about possible official Saudi role in the spying scandal.

Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, exchanged messages with an unnamed member of the Saudi royal family as recently as October 5, four days before his arrest, according to a detention memorandum filed by federal prosecutors.

In one exchange, the royal wrote, “Saudi needs you more then the US!” and Alfozan replied, “100,” according to the prosecutors.

The royal’s identity has not been disclosed. Prosecutors allege the communications reflected an effort to recruit Alfozan to work on artificial intelligence in Saudi Arabia, where he had been pursuing professional opportunities while employed at OpenAI.

Prosecutors also cited assistance from Saudi officials in arguing that Alfozan could flee the U.S. if released. A Saudi military official paid for a business-class flight for Alfozan’s wife and infant son, who left San Francisco for Doha, Qatar, on October 10, according to the filing.

His wife told investigators that she intended to move permanently to Saudi Arabia with their son and that Alfozan eventually planned to join them.

Before his arrest, Alfozan had booked a one-way flight to Riyadh for October 12, coinciding with a planned two-month parental leave. Prosecutors argued that his financial resources and apparent support from a foreign government without an extradition treaty with the United States made him a serious flight risk.

The case began after OpenAI employees discovered a concealed audio recording device on September 30, inserted into a USB port behind a television in an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco offices. The device, which investigators said had been installed around September 28 and contained encrypted recordings, was wrapped in toilet paper.

According to the criminal complaint, the room was regularly used for discussions involving confidential research, product plans, commercial strategy and government engagements.

Prosecutors said government officials attended meetings there around the time the device was installed, heightening concerns about the potential exposure of sensitive discussions.

Investigators cited office surveillance footage showing Alfozan close to the conference room despite lacking authorization to access it. Footage from October 5 allegedly showed him looking behind the television where the device had been placed.

OpenAI security personnel also found a second, similar recording device in a bag containing his identification and other belongings, according to the complaint.

The investigation uncovered additional digital evidence. A chatbot account associated with Alfozan’s wife, which prosecutors said shared multiple identifiers with his own account, had submitted prompts about constructing and concealing an audio recorder, improving live listening and encrypting stored files.

Investigators also cited his inquiries into office locations, meeting-room calendars and scheduled gatherings involving company executives and external partners.

Alfozan was arrested on October 9 and subsequently dismissed by OpenAI, where he had worked as an engineer since July 2025. The company referred the matter to the FBI after discovering the device.

OpenAI has said it found no evidence that the incident resulted in the theft or extraction of model weights, source code or customer data. The case has nevertheless drawn attention to the risks surrounding the protection of advanced artificial intelligence research as governments and technology companies compete for strategic advantages.

Alfozan’s lawyer, William Pernik, has challenged the prosecution’s argument that his client would flee if released. He said the planned travel was for family and immigration reasons, noting that the tickets had been booked in advance and that Alfozan did not leave after learning that OpenAI had discovered the device.

Pernik asked the court to release him under home detention, GPS monitoring and a bond supported by the Saudi consulate.

Alfozan has been charged with using or attempting to use an electronic device to intercept oral communications, an offense punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He has not been charged with espionage or theft of trade secrets, and prosecutors have not alleged that the Saudi royal directed the placement of the recorder.

The spying attempt may have been to gain a financial edge rather than steal AI technology. Inside knowledge of OpenAI’s investment plans, commercial partnerships, negotiations and business strategy could potentially help Saudi royal-linked interests anticipate market movements, secure more favorable terms in major deals or gain an advantage over competitors. Such intelligence could carry substantial economic value without revealing a single line of OpenAI’s code.

In Video: Houthis Turn Saudi-Backed Assault in Al-Jawf Into a Burning Retreat

19 October 2026 at 16:32

File image.

Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah) said on October 19 that they had repelled a large-scale attack by Saudi-backed government forces in eastern al-Jawf province, destroying and damaging military vehicles and seizing weapons during the fighting.

The Houthi military media unit released footage showing the group’s fighters engaging the attacking force at varying distances, using machine guns, artillery, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank guided missiles to target personnel and vehicles.

The attack was supported by Saudi warplanes and involved a coordinated advance toward Houthi positions and deeper into territory under their control. Houthi fighters, however, halted the push using prepared defensive positions.

The footage showed several vehicles being struck or left disabled, while Houthi fighters captured a range of weapons and military vehicles.

According to the Houthi military media report, the attacking force eventually withdrew, leaving dead and wounded fighters behind.

The attack in al-Jawf may have been intended to divert Houthi forces and resources from the fronts around Taiz and Bab al-Mandab, where the group has made recent advances against Saudi-backed forces. By applying pressure on a separate front in the northeast, the government side may have sought to stretch the group’s forces and disrupt their ongoing operations in the southwest.

Russian Jet-Powered Geran Makes Record Recon Flight Over Western Ukraine

19 October 2026 at 15:09

Illustrative image.

A Russian Geran-5 jet-powered one-way attack drone flew 1,500 kilometers across Ukraine on October 19, circling the western city of Lviv six times, the Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported, citing Ukrainian media.

The drone crossed Ukraine from east to west before making a wide loop around Lviv, near the Polish border, according to the newspaper, which described the flight as a record distance for the drone type.

The report also said Russian Geran-type drones attacked targets in Ukraine’s western regions of Volyn, Rivne and Ternopil, as well as in Ivano-Frankivsk.

A separate report published Monday by Russia’s Public News Service identified the drone involved in the long-distance flight as a Geran-4 rather than a Geran-5. Citing the Telegram channel Osvedomitel, it said the drone traveled more than 1,400 kilometers and circled Lviv six times during what it described as a reconnaissance flight.

The news service said the drone was launched from Russia’s Oryol region, citing Ukrainian monitoring resources. It also reported that the drone may have carried a reduced warhead to extend its flight range and duration.

The Geran-4 is a deeply upgraded version of the Geran-3, which is alleged to be a copy of the Iranian Shahed-238 jet-powered drone.

The drone retains the overall delta-wing design, but with improved aerodynamic and stealth features. It is also equipped with a more powerful turbojet engine — allegedly a copy of the Chinese Telefly TF-TJ1600A. It can reportedly reach speeds between 350 and 500 kilometers per hour and has an average range of 850 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the Geran-5 features a design said to be inspired by Iran’s Karrar drone and is more similar to a land-attack cruise missile.

The drone is reported to be propelled by a copy of the Chinese Telefly TF-TJ2000A turbojet engine, with a range of 1,000 kilometers and a speed between 450 and 600 kilometers per hour. It can be equipped with an artificial-intelligence-powered electro-optical targeting system, in addition to the basic jamming-resistant GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system.

Both drones underwent serious upgrades in recent months, including in design and propulsion, which makes the record flight over Lviv unsurprising.

Ukrainian defense technology adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov said last week that some Geran-4 drones launched from the Crimean Peninsula reached Lutsk, covering about 880 kilometers, as Russian forces expanded their use of the drones against targets farther west.

Malian Forces Retake Strategic Intahaka Gold Mine (Videos)

19 October 2026 at 13:47

Illustrative image. (Telegram)

The Malian military had taken control of the Intahaka gold-mining site in the Gao region, Malijet reported on October 19, citing information relayed by several sources.

Authorities launched a security operation in the area to pursue armed groups, the Malian news outlet reported, adding that a delegation led by Mali’s mining minister also visited the site after it was captured on October 18.

Intahaka lies about 50 kilometers southwest of Gao and is known for artisanal gold extraction. The site has attracted miners from across the region, with hundreds of people previously reported working across its extensive mining grounds.

Last year, L’Economiste du Mali reported that the government had assigned management of the site to the state-owned mining company SOREM as part of efforts to formalize production and strengthen state oversight of gold extraction.

The mining area fell to the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front, better known as the FLA, and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, an al-Qaida affiliate, during a coordinated offensive launched last April. The Critical Threats Project reported that Malian troops and Russian Africa Corps personnel withdrew from Intahaka following negotiations with the insurgents, who also advanced across other parts of northern Mali.

The reported return comes amid efforts by Mali’s military government to reassert its presence in areas affected by the insurgent offensive.

The Malian military, backed by Africa Corps, subsequently reentered Kidal on October 6 after the FLA announced a strategic withdrawal from the northern city, marking a significant victory for the military government.

Malijet’s report didn’t clarify whether Africa Corps personnel also participated in the latest operation. However, footage from Intahaka indicates that there among the forces that entered the site.

Dozens of Saudi-Backed Fighters Massacred in Pinpoint Houthi Missile Strike (18+ Videos)

19 October 2026 at 11:58

File image.

At least 18 people were killed on October 19 when missiles struck a government military training camp in Yemen’s Shabwa province in an attack later claimed by the Houthis (Ansar Allah), four government and medical sources told Reuters.

At least three ballistic missiles hit Al-Alam camp during morning training, according to the sources cited by the news agency.

China’s Xinhua news agency reported a higher death toll, saying at least 25 soldiers were killed and more than 30 others were wounded. Xinhua cited a government military official and a local medical source.

A Houthi military source later told the Saba news agency that the group had targeted troop concentrations at the camp, claiming dozens of people were killed or wounded.

The deadly strike comes amid escalating fighting between the Houthis, who control the capital, Sanaa, and much of northern Yemen, and forces backing the internationally recognized government.

Saudi-backed government forces launched a counterattack earlier this month to recapture Houthi-held territory, regaining ground near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key shipping chokepoint at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. However, the counterattack has largely failed.

Meanwhile, in the province of Taiz, the Houthis managed to place Saudi-backed forces under a tight siege. The group’s fighters are now advancing there slowly but steadily.

The latest strike was a demonstration of the Houthis’ military and intelligence capabilities, which are far superior to those of Saudi-backed forces.

Houthis Release Footage of Saudi AH-6i Helicopter Downing Near Najran

18 October 2026 at 10:59

Illustrative image.

Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah) released footage on October 18 showing the downing of a Saudi AH-6i light attack helicopter near the border with the province of Najran in the south of the kingdom, saying it was struck by a locally manufactured surface-to-air missile.

The footage’s accompanying caption said the helicopter was targeted while carrying out what the group described as hostile operations near Najran.

The release follows an announcement by Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree a day earlier said that the group had shot down a Saudi helicopter near the border.

Saree initially identified the helicopter as an Apache, saying it had been brought down while targeting Houthi positions along the border. The footage’s caption, however, identifies it as an AH-6i, a light attack and reconnaissance helicopter operated by the Saudi Arabian National Guard.

Saudi Arabia’s military coalition confirmed earlier that an AH-6i helicopter belonging to the National Guard had crashed in Najran, killing both officers aboard.

Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki attributed the crash to a technical malfunction, although the footage released later by the Houthis affirmed that this is false.

The AH-6i, also known as the Little Bird, is a compact armed helicopter designed for reconnaissance and light attack missions. A 2014 U.S. contract for 24 helicopters, initial spare parts and ground support equipment for Saudi Arabia was valued at $234.7 million, an average of about $9.8 million per helicopter across the package.

Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced late on October 17 that they shot down a Saudi AH-64 Apache attack helicopter near the border with the kingdom’s southern province of Najran.

In a statement, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, the movement’s military spokesman, said the American-made helicopter had been targeting Houthi positions along the border.

“Our armed forces, with the help and grace of God, managed to shoot down an Apache belonging to the Saudi enemy opposite Najran while it was carrying out hostile actions against our forces’ positions along the border,” Saree said. “It was shot down with a suitable weapon.”

The Houthis operate a range of air defense systems, from man-portable weapons to interceptors and medium-range surface-to-air missiles.

The Apache is Saudi Arabia’s principal attack helicopter, with a modernized AH-64E estimated to cost about $52 million per helicopter according to recent U.S. Army procurement figures.

Open-source inventories list 22 Apaches with the Royal Saudi Land Forces and 12 others with the Saudi Arabian National Guard.

The announcement came just days after the Houthis said they had struck a Saudi Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet over Yemen’s Saada province. The group later released footage showing a missile hitting the jet during flight, supporting its claim.

Including the latest claim, the Houthis have announced 18 shootdowns since the start of the ongoing confrontation with Saudi Arabia. Aside from an American-made F-15SA fighter jet, all other warplanes shot down by the Houthis were combat drones.

Deadly Explosion at PMF Headquarters Raises Strike Suspicions (Videos)

An explosion struck the headquarters of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in eastern Baghdad on October 17, with conflicting reports emerging over casualties and claims that the facility had been targeted in a strike.

The blast occurred at a PMF site east of the Army Canal in the Sadr al-Qanat area, near Saad al-Witri Hospital. Residents reported hearing a loud explosion, while footage circulated by local media showed flames and thick smoke rising from the area.

In a statement, the PMF said a stockpile of damaged ammunition had exploded inside the facility and initially reported no casualties.

Shafaq News, citing a security source, reported that four PMF members were wounded, some seriously. Asharq Al-Awsat separately cited sources as saying one fighter was killed and three others injured.

The cause of the explosion remained unclear. Sabereen News, a militia-linked channel, circulated claims that the headquarters had been targeted in a strike. Asharq Al-Awsat also reported that security personnel believed the site had been targeted, but provided no details establishing the nature of the incident.

The explosion was the second reported incident involving ammunition at an armed faction’s site in Baghdad this month. On October 1, munitions stored at a site belonging to an armed faction exploded in the capital’s southern Dora district without causing casualties, according to Shafaq News.

Many of the PMF’s factions are also believed to be members of the Iran-aligned Islamic Resistance in Iraq. The recent blasts came amid reports suggesting that both the United States and Israel are preparing to resume war against the Islamic Republic before the end of the year. They also came amid a heated confrontation between the Houthis, also allied to Tehran, and Saudi Arabia.

Iran Used Submarines to Arm Yemen’s Houthis

17 October 2026 at 17:47

Iran has provided Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah) with weapons, targeting intelligence and military training that have helped the group carry out increasingly sophisticated attacks against Saudi Arabia and its Yemeni allies, The Wall Street Journal reported on October 17.

The assistance includes intelligence for selecting targets for drone and missile strikes, tactical guidance and training, according to the report, which cited people briefed on intelligence from Saudi Arabia and the anti-Houthi alliance in Yemen.

Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officers have also deployed inside Yemen, helping direct military operations, the report said.

Iran has supplied weapons to the Houthis through traditional dhow boats, resorting to submarines when maritime shipments were disrupted by U.S. and Israeli strikes, the Journal revealed, citing European and Houthi officials.

The report also described an alleged weapons shipment in July aboard two flights operated by Mahan Air, an Iranian airline under U.S. sanctions.

The flights were ostensibly transporting Yemeni pilgrims and Houthi officials to Tehran for the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. However, they also carried Iranian paramilitary officers and weapons-related cargo, including drone components, missile guidance systems and impact detonators, according to people familiar with intelligence from Saudi Arabia and the anti-Houthi alliance.

The discovery prompted Saudi-aligned forces to bomb the runway at Sanaa airport in an attempt to stop the second flight, setting off the latest escalation in the conflict.

Iranian officers have also helped the Houthis deploy missiles and radars at positions threatening the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, according to the Journal.

The group’s offensive, which accelerated in September, combined large-scale infantry assaults with missile and drone attacks, enabling it to capture the Red Sea port city of Mokha and seize territory around the Bab al-Mandeb.

The group’s increasingly sophisticated tactics, including the use of first-person-view drones guided by fiber-optic cables, indicated that its fighters had received training from Iran, according to a person associated with forces fighting the Houthis.

Another official from the anti-Houthi alliance told the Journal that IRGC officers had been present on the front lines directing drone and missile attacks.

The Houthis have also intensified attacks against Saudi targets, including oil tankers, energy facilities and airports. One strike in Riyadh last weekend killed at least 13 people, according to the report.

Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a senior Houthi official who said he was aboard the second Mahan Air flight, rejected the allegations concerning Iranian officers and weapons, calling them an exaggeration intended to justify the attack on Sanaa airport. He also said claims of Iranian assistance overlooked the group’s own advances in developing its military capabilities.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said last month that Tehran did not interfere in Yemeni affairs and described the Houthis as independent actors pursuing their own interests.

The Journal also acknowledged in its report that the Houthis manufacture some of their own weapons and have obtained components for drones and missiles directly from China, underscoring that their military capabilities do not rely exclusively on Iranian supplies.

The latest allegations may be an attempt to drag Saudi Arabia into a direct confrontation with Iran, amid reports suggesting the United States and Israel could resume war against the Islamic Republic before the end of the year.

North Korea Says It Tested AI-Guided Torpedo System

17 October 2026 at 17:10

North Korea said Saturday it had tested a new precision-guided torpedo that uses artificial intelligence to detect and track targets.

The underwater test of the “super-speed” Zam-2.0 torpedo took place on October 15 to confirm technical upgrades, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

According to the state-run news agency, AI had been incorporated into the weapon’s target detection and guidance functions.

The test demonstrated technology intended to improve the efficiency and performance of the propulsion system, KCNA said, adding that the weapon had undergone more than 180 rounds of testing over the past five years.

The announcement came days after Pyongyang said it had test-fired two types of cruise missiles from a submarine, following weeks of tension with Seoul over a landmine explosion along the countries’ border.

In addition, North Korea announced earlier this month an AI-assisted launch of an intermediate-range hypersonic missile, claiming the weapon could change its flight path at low altitude and could not be avoided. Hypersonic missiles travel at more than five times the speed of sound and can maneuver during flight, making them harder to track and intercept.

South Korea test-fired its own hypersonic glide vehicle days after North Korea announced its test, describing the weapon as a strategic asset capable of changing the course of a battle. Pyongyang subsequently questioned whether Seoul’s test had achieved hypersonic flight, a claim South Korea rejected.

In September, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un emphasized the need to improve AI capabilities in the country’s weapons systems.

The latest tests come as the two Koreas appear to be intensifying their competition over hypersonic weapons and as speculation grows about a possible meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim during Trump’s Asia tour next month. World leaders are scheduled to gather for November’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China.

Houthis Escalate Strikes on Saudi-Led Coalition Stronghold of Aden (Videos)

17 October 2026 at 15:33

File image.

The Houthis (Ansar Allah) fired at least two missiles toward a military facility next to Aden International Airport on October 16, saying the attack targeted a Saudi-led coalition command center and weapons depots at Badr military camp.

Aden’s security department said the missiles struck airport grounds without causing casualties. Meanwhile, Yemeni Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani said they landed about 500 meters from a Yemenia Airways passenger jet preparing to depart for Cairo. Passengers were evacuated, according to a security official.

The strike came a day after the Houthis attacked the al-Maashiq presidential palace, the headquarters of Yemen’s internationally recognized government in Aden.

Yemen’s Health Minister Qasem Buhaibeh said five people were killed and 16 wounded. AFP reported, citing an unnamed Yemeni minister, that Saudi and Yemeni personnel were among the casualties, although no Saudi-specific death toll was disclosed.

The successive attacks have brought mounting pressure on Aden, the interim capital and a key center for the Saudi-backed government.

The Houthis have intensified their military campaign while expanding their territorial gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and tightening their grip around the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a major shipping passage connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

At the same time, the group also tightened its siege of Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city, cutting the city’s main southern road to Aden.

Capturing Taiz would give the group control over another major urban center in southwestern Yemen and could help consolidate its position around the Bab al-Mandab approaches.

The growing frequency of Houthi strikes on Aden may be part of a broader campaign of shaping operations intended to disrupt Saudi-led coalition command-and-control structures ahead of a possible large-scale offensive to capture the port city.

Sisi Calls Emergency Session to Authorize Egyptian Defense of Saudi Arabia

17 October 2026 at 14:07

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on October 17 called for an emergency parliamentary session to authorize a possible Egyptian intervention to defend Saudi Arabia if requested by the kingdom.

“I call on parliament to convene an emergency session to authorize us to take action to intervene in defense of Saudi Arabia, if we are asked to do so,” El-Sisi said at a graduation ceremony for military academy and college cadets.

“This move and this defense require approval from the Egyptian parliament,” he noted, stressing that Egypt was not seeking to join the war against Yemen’s Houthis.

“I am not speaking about attacking or waging war. We are seeking only to defend,” the Egyptian president added.

Egypt is the latest country to publicly signal support for Saudi Arabia as the kingdom faces escalating missile and drone attacks by the Houthis, who control much of Yemen.

El-Sisi said Cairo would take the necessary measures to protect Saudi Arabia, adding that it was “absolutely unacceptable” for the kingdom’s security and stability to be undermined.

Saudi Arabia has secured defensive military support from Pakistan and Turkey through the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, which the three countries agreed to activate on October 5. More recently, the kingdom also received defensive support from the United Kingdom and France.

The United States, for its part, has been providing more substantial military support to Saudi Arabia, including intelligence sharing, operational planning and assistance identifying Houthi targets, as well as weapons and air defense systems.

Still, Riyadh has so far failed to secure a publicly announced commitment from its allies to directly join its offensive against the Houthis inside Yemen.

Tanker Attacks Spread Beyond Hormuz as U.S. Refrains From Responding (Video)

17 October 2026 at 11:59

File image.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on October 17 said a supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude oil caught fire after striking a sea mine in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the IRGC Navy said the tanker was attempting to transit the strait along an unauthorized route and had deliberately switched off its positioning and radar systems to evade Iranian maritime monitoring. It added that the tanker was attempting the crossing under the protection of the U.S. military rather than coordinating its passage with Iranian authorities.

The Corps referred to the U.S. military as the “smuggler and terrorist army” and blamed the tanker’s decision to disable its tracking systems and rely on American protection for the incident.

The incident comes amid an increase in attacks on commercial shipping in the Gulf. Two tankers were targeted in separate incidents off Saudi Arabia’s eastern coast over the past day, well outside the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

One tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile about 68 nautical miles northeast of the Saudi port of Al Jubail, prompting the evacuation of its crew. All crew members were reported safe, and no environmental impact had been reported at the time.

The other tanker was attacked about 78 nautical miles northeast of Al Jubail. The vessel’s master reported that a rocket-propelled grenade fired from a small boat had damaged the vessel’s aft port quarter, according to UKMTO. All crew members were accounted for and reported safe.

Despite the increase in attacks on ships, the U.S. has largely refrained from resuming strikes against Iranian maritime capabilities, according to an Axios report published on October 16.

The news website reported that the White House had ordered U.S. forces to almost completely halt strikes against Iranian anti-ship missiles and attack-drone launchers in the Strait of Hormuz area in recent weeks.

The pause is intended to avoid escalating the war ahead of the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, Axios reported, citing a U.S. official. The official acknowledged that the reduced strikes had made the Islamic Republic more confident about attacking shipping.

Washington has maintained its sanctions and naval blockade against Iran while diplomatic efforts to end the war remain unresolved, with Tehran yet to respond to a U.S. proposal being discussed with Qatari mediators, according to Axios.

The attacks off Saudi Arabia suggest that the threat to commercial shipping is extending beyond the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran is seeking to assert greater control over maritime traffic through the waterway.
