PHC seeks government responses on petitions against governor’s rule in KP

20 October 2026 at 08:08

PESHAWAR – The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday issued notices to the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments over multiple petitions contesting the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in the province.

The court adjourned further proceedings until November 10 after hearing initial arguments.

A two-judge bench, comprising Justice Ijaz Anwar and Justice Muhammad Faheem Wali, also directed that notices be sent to the attorney general for Pakistan and the KP advocate general. The bench said a further order would be issued subsequently.

The petitions include one filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali, alongside pleas submitted by PTI leader Shandana Gulzar, the KP Bar Council and representatives of Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP).

Representing Gohar, lawyers Barrister Sameer Khosa and Salman Akram Raja challenged the constitutional and legal basis of the measures. Khosa argued that Article 232(1) of the Constitution required approval from the provincial assembly before an emergency could be imposed.

He maintained that the mandatory procedure had not been followed and said subsequent approval by the National Assembly and Senate was also being contested.

The counsel further argued that conditions in KP did not justify the measures and referred to a Supreme Court ruling in the former chief minister Pir Sabir Shah case. He contended that the chief minister and provincial cabinet should continue functioning during an emergency.

Khosa told the bench that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and the provincial assembly speaker were allegedly missing and said the petition sought their recovery, restoration of the assembly and reversal of the measures.

Raja also maintained that the relevant legal requirements had not been fulfilled and called for governor’s rule and the emergency to be withdrawn.

Addressing the court, Gohar alleged that PTI-affiliated lawmakers had been taken into custody and that party members were facing harassment and raids at their homes. He claimed that 12 members of the National Assembly and 14 provincial lawmakers had been picked up.

The court will take up the matter again on November 10.

585-watt solar panel prices drop in Pakistan: Check new rates

20 October 2026 at 07:53

LAHORE – Solar panel prices in Pakistan have reportedly declined by up to Rs8,000 in recent weeks, with the rate of a 585-watt solar plate falling to Rs19,000, according to a social media post sharing market updates.

The reported reduction comes amid slower buying activity during the winter season, which has affected demand in the solar panel market.

However, prices may vary depending on the brand and manufacturer, meaning buyers could encounter different rates across the market.

The latest prices were shared by a Facebook page that regularly posts updates on solar panel rates.

The figures have sparked mixed reactions among social media users, with some questioning whether the panels are actually available at the reported price.

One user claimed that the current market rate for a 585-watt solar panel stood at Rs22,500, indicating a difference of Rs3,500 from the reported price of Rs19,000.

The differing claims suggest that prices may vary between sellers and brands. Buyers are advised to confirm the latest rates with local suppliers before making a purchase.

While the reported decline could offer some relief to prospective solar panel buyers, the exact price depends on the product and the seller.

Pakistan to make e-passports mandatory from THIS date as schedule changed

20 October 2026 at 06:37

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has extended the deadline for the mandatory issuance of electronic passports (e-passports), with the new system set to take effect nationwide on October 23, 2026, instead of the previously scheduled October 15.

The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has revised the timeline for phasing out machine-readable passports (MRPs) as the country prepares to transition to the modern e-passport system.

Under the updated policy, all passport offices across Pakistan and Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad will issue only e-passports to applicants seeking new passports from October 23, 2026. The issuance and renewal of machine-readable passports will continue until October 22.

Authorities had earlier set October 16 as the deadline for making e-passports mandatory. The revised schedule provides additional time before the transition to the new system takes effect.

Officials have clarified that machine-readable passports issued before October 23 will remain valid until their expiry dates. Holders of valid MRPs will not need to replace their existing passports before expiry solely because of the introduction of the new policy.

The transition to e-passports aims to modernise Pakistan’s passport services and bring the security and operational efficiency of its travel documents in line with international standards.

Once the new policy comes into effect, e-passports will become the sole type of passport issued to new applicants through passport offices nationwide and Pakistani diplomatic missions overseas.

Consumers hit hard as LPG prices surge to Rs500/Kg in Punjab, KP

20 October 2026 at 05:15

LAHORE – Consumers in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are facing a growing financial burden as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices have surged to Rs500 per kilogram, significantly exceeding the officially notified rate for October 2026.

Irfan Khokhar, chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, said the government had fixed the LPG price at Rs279 per kilogram for October.

However, consumers in Punjab and KP are being charged as much as Rs500 per kilogram, while prices in hilly areas have reportedly climbed to Rs600 per kilogram.

The sharp difference between the notified rate and market prices has raised concerns among consumers already struggling with rising household expenses.

Khokhar criticised the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), alleging that it had failed to take effective action against excessive pricing. He called on the government to use the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) terminal to help control LPG prices.

Consumers are facing mounting pressure as the fuel’s market price remains far above the officially announced rate, prompting renewed calls for stronger price monitoring and effective regulatory action.

Last week, Pakistan has received its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment for October, offering some relief to the country’s energy supply as part of its winter gas supply management.

However, concerns are growing over meeting domestic demand during the winter of 2026-27.

The LNG vessel Al Areesh, carrying a shipment from Qatar, arrived at the Engro LNG terminal on Tuesday at 11:05 am. The process of converting the imported LNG back into natural gas began at noon, according to the provided information.

Pakistan is expected to require 24 LNG cargoes to meet its gas needs during the upcoming winter season. However, rising consumption and constraints on available supplies could put pressure on the country’s energy system.

Gas demand from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) is projected to increase sharply from the current 550 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) to 1,550 mmcfd during winter.

Similarly, demand served by Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) is expected to rise from 300 mmcfd to around 500 mmcfd.

The widening gap between demand and available supplies has raised concerns about potential gas shortages across several sectors. Export-oriented industries, non-export industries, compressed natural gas (CNG) stations and cement manufacturers could face supply disruptions during the colder months.

The arrival of the October shipment provides a limited boost to supplies, but ensuring adequate LNG availability throughout the winter will remain a major challenge as consumption increases nationwide.

The judge expressed displeasure over the lawyer’s conduct while cases were being heard in the courtroom.

Under the notification, mobile phones and other equipment used for unauthorised recording may be seized, while those violating the restrictions could also face legal proceedings.

Watch: Tiger Shroff narrowly escapes in Mumbai gun attack

19 October 2026 at 05:52

MUMBAI – Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff escaped unharmed after unidentified assailants allegedly fired three to four shots at his vehicle in Mumbai’s Juhu area on Sunday evening, leaving two people, including his driver, injured, according to Indian media reports.

Police said the actor’s driver sustained a gunshot wound to his arm, while an autorickshaw driver nearby was also injured in the incident.

The firing reportedly took place as Shroff was returning from a football ground after playing the sport. A crowd had gathered at the location to catch a glimpse of the actor at the time of the incident.

Maharashtra’s chief minister has taken notice of the incident and sought a report from the police. Mumbai Police have also formed teams to investigate the shooting.

Shroff’s father, veteran actor Jackie Shroff, assured reporters that his son was safe.

Following the incident, a video circulated on social media in which a man claiming to represent the Lawrence Bishnoi gang allegedly took responsibility for the attack. Indian media reports identified the individual as Anil Pandit, who reportedly claimed that warnings had previously been issued to Tiger Shroff.

The video also allegedly contained threats against other Bollywood personalities who work with actor Salman Khan.

However, the authenticity of the claims and any connection between the alleged gang and the shooting have not been independently verified. Police have not confirmed the identity of those responsible for the attack.

The incident comes after a shooting outside Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments residence in Mumbai’s Bandra area in April 2024. Two men on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire outside the actor’s home. Police subsequently registered a case against Anmol Bishnoi, the younger brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, in connection with that incident.

Lawrence Bishnoi is currently imprisoned in Gujarat. He is widely reported to have a longstanding feud with Salman Khan, reportedly linked to the actor’s alleged involvement in a 1998 blackbuck poaching case in Rajasthan. The blackbuck holds religious significance for the Bishnoi community.

18 October 2026 at 08:47

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: The authorities here on Saturday locked and sealed the historic Ram Leela Temple in Rahim Bazaar days after civil society activists intervened to stop the demolition of the heritage building for the construction of a commercial plaza at the site.

The building had earlier been sealed by Assistant Commissioner Hamid Siddiq following public protests and work at the site was stopped, said local sources.

The participants also alleged that the relevant authorities had allowed construction of a commercial plaza at the site despite questions over their legal authority to do so.
