Roseanne Barr challenges Hollywood to give her another shot after controversial 'Roseanne' exit

Eight years after she was fired from her hit reboot of "Roseanne," Roseanne Barr is looking for a second chance.

The 73-year-old has self-financed a new show called "Meemaw: A Modern Day Fable."

Barr told The Hollywood Reporter this week that she's shopping the sitcom to "Anybody who wants a number one show and is smart enough to take a number one show."

"I don’t know why they don’t want a number one show and why they hate a number one show and why they would destroy a number one show," she said of Hollywood. "But if they do want a number one show, I got it."

The "Roseanne" reboot was a huge hit with tens of millions of viewers each week, and it finished its first season as the number one primetime sitcom in the 18-49 demographic, according to Variety.

She’s also pitched "Meemaw" to Elon Musk but without success.

"I don’t know why he hasn’t called me or returned my calls," she admitted of the trillionaire. "I mean, of all people on earth, I’m the one he should call, but I don’t know."

"Meemaw" is about the matriarch of a mixed-race family in Texas who are preppers, which she describes as "Somebody who’s prepared of the end of the world."

It’s partially based on her life.

"I’m a prepper. I live in Texas. Everybody’s a prepper here," she said.

The show also stars Drea de Matteo, Omar Gooding and Randy Quaid who plays Barr’s love interest.

JOHN GOODMAN ADMITS HE FELT 'FRIGHTENED' AFTER THE SUDDEN FAME HE EXPERIENCED FROM 'ROSEANNE'

"I’m in love with him and I wish he would leave his wife and marry me," she joked. "I enjoyed making out with him so much that I wrote extra scenes where we would make out."

Barr said she hasn’t shown the sitcom to anyone yet.

"But it is so funny," she said. "It’s the funniest s--- I’ve ever done, and I had a ball and I play a really wacky old lady this time."

On her firing from the reboot, Barr insists she didn’t intend her infamous tweet about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett to be racist.

ELI STEELE: THE TERROR OF BEING CALLED RACIST IS CRUSHING FREE SPEECH IN AMERICA

"It was not a racist tweet," she said. "It wasn’t about race, it was about politics. What it really was a three-month conversation between myself and journalists in Iran who were talking about attacks mostly on Iranian women in the streets."

After the tweet, she apologized, and she claimed ABC gave her a choice of signing off on the rights to the show so it could continue as "The Conners" or it would be canceled and everyone would lose their jobs.

"ABC demanded that they would only make [the show] if I were not [in it]. And they called me and said, ‘You have a choice to make: You can sign off on letting us do a show without you [or everyone is out of a job.]’" she claimed.

She continued, "The only thing that mattered to me at the time is I said, ‘I want you to say I’m not a racist and that you know I’m not a racist and that my whole life has been about fighting racism and that you know it.’"

"And [Werner] said, "I will do that once you sign away your rights. And also I promise you, if you sign away your rights for this season, that we’ll make sure that everybody knows you did it to save the jobs of the crew,’" she claimed, via the outlet.

Washington Post columnist reinstated after being fired over Charlie Kirk posts gloats about receiving back pay

A columnist took a victory lap Tuesday as The Washington Post was ordered to give her back pay after she challenged her firing last year.

"POV: Channeling my inner Rihanna because I won my case against the @washingtonpost — and they owe me a year’s worth of back pay," Karen Attiah wrote on X while sharing a video of her dancing to a Rihanna song.

In August, an arbitrator ordered the Post to reinstate her employment and give her back pay, saying the paper "did not have good and sufficient cause" and that it "violated" her labor agreement.

WASHINGTON POST ORDERED TO REINSTATE COLUMNIST KAREN ATTIAH AFTER BEING TERMINATED OVER CHARLIE KIRK POSTS

"I'm still processing everything, but overall, I am happy I have been vindicated and ordered reinstated with back pay," Attiah told Fox News Digital. "But in the meantime, I just wanted to put on a pretty gold dress, vibe to Rihanna’s music and eat cake! I wanted to be as loud about the win as possible so that other journalists will not be afraid to speak the truth."

Attiah said her post was inspired by a video she liked from her party and "wanted to show that I take celebrating this huge win — for me, the Guild [the Washington Post union] and for journalism — very seriously!"

It remains unclear whether she will formally return to work despite the arbitrator's order. A spokesperson for The Washington Post told Fox News Digital the paper respects the arbitration process and declined to comment further.

TEACHERS WHO CELEBRATED CHARLIE KIRK'S ASSASSINATION NOW CASH IN WITH TAXPAYER-FUNDED SETTLEMENTS

Attiah sparked outrage last year for her posts about slain conservative icon Charlie Kirk on the liberal social media platform Bluesky following his assassination.

"Refusing to tear my clothes and smear ashes on my face in performative mourning for a White man that espoused violence is… not the same as violence," Attiah wrote at the time. In a separate post, she wrote, "Part of what keeps America so violent is the insistence that people perform care, empty goodness and absolution for White men who espouse hatred and violence.’"

Critics also slammed Attiah for misquoting Kirk in another post, attributing to him saying, "Black women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a White person's slot."

On a July 2023 episode of "The Charlie Kirk Show," Kirk actually said, "If we would have said three weeks ago [...] that Joy Reid and Michelle Obama, and Sheila Jackson Lee, and Ketanji Brown Jackson were affirmative-action picks, we would have been called racist. But now they're comin' out and they're saying it for us! They're comin' out, and they're saying, 'I'm only here because of affirmative action.' Yeah, we know. You do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a White person's slot to go be taken somewhat seriously."

Following the backlash, Attiah revealed she had been fired by the Post, saying in a termination letter her posts were "unacceptable" and "gross misconduct."

Attiah filed a legal challenge against the Post over her termination last fall, and previously announced in June that she and the paper would enter arbitration.

Jay Z's past political statements won't help perception of NFL politicizing Super Bowl halftime

Bad Bunny's halftime performance this past February produced the largest drop in Super Bowl viewership during halftime in history.

Specifically, viewership on NBC and Telemundo fell from 135.9 million at the end of the second quarter to 128.2 million during Bad Bunny's performance from 8:15 to 8:29 p.m.

That's a 5.7% decline during halftime, compared to a 4% drop during Kendrick Lamar's performance a year earlier. Before the past two years, Super Bowl audiences had typically grown during the halftime show.

According to Puck, the person responsible for selecting Lamar and Bad Bunny has now chosen himself to perform this year in Los Angeles: Jay Z, whom the NFL empowered as halftime czar in 2019.

On the surface, a third consecutive year of declining halftime viewership should concern the league.

Jay Z offers nostalgia. He was one of the defining hip-hop artists of the 2000s. He remained relevant well into the following decade through collaborations with artists such as Kanye West and Rihanna. More American viewers are likely to recognize Jay Z than Lamar or Bad Bunny, even if the latter is a massive international attraction.

Still, recognition doesn't necessarily translate to interest.

Lamar and Bad Bunny divided fans along political lines at a time when partisan activism often limits the appeal of an event as mainstream as the Super Bowl. Jay Z's political history is even more extensive.

Sports fans may remember that he helped distribute "I Can’t Breathe" T-shirts as part of protests following the death of Eric Garner.

He also headlined an Ohio concert for then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and was an outspoken supporter of Barack Obama. Jay Z celebrated Obama's election in the 2008 track "My President," rapping, "Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk/Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run/Obama’s running so we all can fly."

Is that so?

Jay Z's political commentary has also included repeated criticism of Republicans, particularly President Donald Trump. He has called Trump "a joke," "not a very sophisticated man" and, during a 2018 CNN interview, a "superbug." He has also linked Trump's political rise to racism in America.

"[Trump] cannot be my president. He cannot be our president," Jay Z said while campaigning for Clinton in 2016.

He has also described America as "sexist" while discussing the country's failure to elect a female president.

Anyway, Jay Z has now chosen to perform at the biggest annual entertainment event in this supposedly sexist and racist country.

The NFL can argue that an artist's politics are irrelevant unless they surface during the halftime show. Maybe. But viewers don't necessarily make that distinction.

Bad Bunny didn't make a political statement during his performance. He didn't have to. His anti-Trump commentary was already part of his public image, and a record share of the Super Bowl audience tuned out during his performance.

The NFL understands this dynamic well. A poll last year found that it took nearly a decade for the league to regain its previous popularity among Republican-voting consumers after the national anthem protests began in 2016.

The lesson should be obvious: alienating half the country is bad for business.

The kneeling controversy hurt the NFL. The past two halftime shows have coincided with unusual audience declines. There is little reason to expect Jay Z to reverse that trend.

Especially now that viewers have somewhere else to go.

Turning Point USA's alternative halftime show was successful enough last season to establish an alternative for viewers who object to the NFL's selection on political grounds.

The league can distance itself from Jay Z's selection by pointing to his authority over the halftime show. That's not convincing. No serious person believes Roger Goodell and the NFL are powerless to veto the performer at their own championship game.

Of course they aren't.

The NFL partnered with Jay Z's Roc Nation in 2019 to advise on live music entertainment and work with the league's Inspire Change initiative. The agreement came while the NFL was still navigating the political fallout from the Kaepernick controversy.

Seven years later, judge the arrangement by the results. The past two halftime shows lost viewers.

And last season, many of them didn't return for the third quarter. While the uncompetitive Seahawks-Patriots matchup didn't help, overall Super Bowl viewership declined from 127.7 million in 2025 to 124.9 million in 2026. Considering Nielsen's change to its measurement system last year, the underlying decline is greater than the raw difference of nearly 3 million viewers suggests.

We are not suggesting the NFL overcorrect by putting a conservative-leaning musician on stage. The Super Bowl doesn't need a Republican halftime show any more than it needs a Democratic one.

It needs an artist with broad appeal who doesn't give millions of viewers another reason to change the channel. It should not be this difficult.

If Jay Z's latest solution is to choose himself, the NFL ought to take someone else to the decision.
