Diego Maradona’s Debut: 50 Years Since Football Changed Forever

21 October 2026 at 03:56
(FILE) "From Comunicaciones Stadium, where we trained, I ran to tell my parents that the next day it was my debut. I told Tota (his mother) and two seconds later in Fiorito everyone already knew", remembered Diego Maradona about that day. Photo: El Grafico.

Fifty years ago today, on October 20, 1976, a 15-year-old Diego Armando Maradona played his first professional match for Argentinos Juniors, coming on at halftime against Talleres de Córdoba and beginning a career that would reshape world football.

The date is described in the report as a milestone in the history of international sport. The young talent from a popular neighborhood like Villa Fiorito stepped onto the pitch to play the second half of the match, which Argentinos lost 1-0 at its stadium in La Paternal, Buenos Aires.

Diego Maradona was 15 years, 11 months and 20 days old, ten days short of his 16th birthday, which made him the youngest player to debut in Argentine football.

Other accounts of the day, including a longer retrospective published in Argentina, put the crowd at between 7,000 and 8,000 people and say Maradona nutmegged defender Juan Domingo Patricio Cabrera on his first touch of the ball, a detail that comes from Maradona’s own memoirs.

A Debut Full of Promise

Although the result went against his team, Maradona’s arrival offered immediate signs of his technical quality. His control of the ball stood out, as did his nerve in running at defenders despite his age. Nobody in the stadium that afternoon could have measured the scale of what they were witnessing, but the signs were already visible.

Coach Juan Carlos Montes brought on the teenager in place of midfielder Rubén Giacobetti at the start of the second half. Diego Maradona wore the number 16 shirt. Montes told him to play as he knew how and to nutmeg the first opponent he faced. Maradona later wrote that he did exactly that, passing the ball between the legs of defender Juan Domingo Patricio Cabrera. The crowd responded with “olés,” according to his memoirs.

From Cebollitas to Legend

Diego Maradona came through the club’s youth ranks, including the famous children’s side known as “Los Cebollitas”, and had been building great expectations through his performances at junior level. His entry into the top category was the start of a professional career that would later bring him numerous domestic and international titles and turn him into an emblematic figure and a popular reference point in global sport.

His career would later shine brightest on the world stage, particularly in the 1986 World Cup triumph in Mexico, where his talent and control of the ball defined an entire tournament.

Maradona’s first match ended in defeat, and by his own later account he knew he was beginning something important. In the following weeks he moved from the bench to a regular place in the starting lineup, according to the longer retrospective, and went on to become the league’s top scorer in several consecutive tournaments.

But the first page had been written. A 15-year-old walked onto the pitch in the red of Argentinos Juniors, replaced a teammate at the break, and began a story that still commands attention five decades on.

The date is recalled not for the result, but for what it announced. It was the moment a career began that would reshape the dynamics of football and reaffirm the importance of youth development in the sport across the region.

The work done in the club’s academy, the patience of those who formed him, and the talent that needed no introduction all converged on October 20, 1976. A modest afternoon in La Paternal, in a game lost, became the first step in one of the most celebrated careers in the history of the football around the world.

Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended 30 Days and Fined €255 for Leaving Portugal Camp

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for leaving Portugal’s training camp after a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus, a punishment that will expire in time for him to be available for the national team’s November matches.

The disciplinary council of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) imposed the punishment on Monday and confirmed that Ronaldo admitted the accusation in full.

Ronaldo walked out of the squad’s camp in Copenhagen on September 30, the day Portugal faced Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.

Ronaldo’s stated reason was that coach Jorge Jesus had twice broken his word about his role in the team, after he did not come on in the match against Norway, where he was a substitute. Jesus denied having reached an agreement with Ronaldo but left the door open to his return after Portugal’s 2-1 victory on September 27.

The rules allow a suspension of one to six months, but the ceiling drops to three when a player accepts responsibility. Ronaldo did, and his 30-day ban reflects that admission. Alongside the ban, the council ordered him to pay 255 euros, a sum worth about 285 dollars.

Minimum Penalty Applied

The disciplinary body determined that Ronaldo intentionally committed an infringement under article 160, paragraph 1, of the federation’s regulations. The procedure opened on October 9, based on facts reported two days earlier. His suspension was counted from September 30, the day he left, so he has already served 19 days and has 11 remaining. In practice, he was sidelined from the moment he abandoned the camp, well before Monday’s formal ruling.

In its statement, the disciplinary committee said Ronaldo “did not previously communicate or justify, before the person responsible for the FPF or the national team, his intention to abandon” the concentration on September 30. The former Real Madrid striker later told Federation President Pedro Proença that he was not “in emotional conditions to continue.”

A few days after leaving, Ronaldo posted a lengthy statement on his official Instagram account explaining his reasons and asking fans to believe him: “Believe me, this is the pure truth.”

“Despite the absolute lack of trust in the coach’s word, as anyone who witnessed these conversations can attest, I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine,” he said.

Ronaldo received the minimum penalty provided by the FPF’s rules. For abandoning national team activity, the regulations call for a penalty of between one and six months, although the maximum in this case would be reduced to three months because the player admitted guilt.

Return Possible in November

The timing of the ban means Ronaldo will be eligible for Portugal’s next Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales on November 14 and 17. Both the captain and the coach have left the door open for his inclusion in that squad. With only 11 days of the suspension left, the 41-year-old could rejoin the group before those matches.

The sanction resolves a dispute that had hung over the national team since the September window. Portugal beat Norway 2-1 in that period, with Ronaldo watching from the bench. He departed before the following match against Denmark and played no part in either fixture. His absence, however, did not settle the questions about his relationship with the coach, which the federation has now addressed through its ruling.

For Ronaldo, the outcome is a light one. The 255-euro fine is a small sum for a player of his profile, and the suspension expires before his country’s next competitive matches. The federation acted at the lowest end of its disciplinary scale, allowing the captain to return without missing further competitive action. Portugal’s November fixtures will now show whether the dispute is truly closed or merely paused.

Uruguay Debuts Virtual Cards in Football Refereeing

Uruguayan football introduced a new technology on Thursday night when referees replaced the traditional paper cards with an electronic device to show cautions and expulsions during a local match, although early tests have shown problems with visibility, according to local media reports.

Uruguayan football experienced a historic day on Thursday night with the appearance of virtual cards in the match that Nacional won 3-0 to Rentistas for the eighths final of the Uruguayan Cup, at the Gran Parque Central stadium.

During the game, the officiating team used the electronic device instead of the physical cards to signal bookings and sending-offs on the pitch.

The tool is designed to look like a mobile phone and has dedicated buttons to display yellow or red lights. Its main selling point is the automation of administrative work and allows referees to record every disciplinary sanction, substitution or incident in real time directly in the COMET sports management system.

That removes the need to take handwritten notes during the action and speeds up the digitization of the official post-match report.

Text reads: “The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) introduced virtual cards, a method that debuted in a Cup duel. This technological advance allows the automated and digital recording of the player who has been reprimanded.”

Despite the logistical benefits, the virtual cards face technical obstacles in their first trial stages. The debut was initially scheduled for the match between Defensor Sporting and Plaza Colonia, but sunlight made it impossible to see the colors properly. Under the artificial lighting of Thursday’s night match, local media reports said the signal was still not completely clear from a distance.

What Comes Next

At present, the device’s fundamental value lies in its ability to streamline the collection and transmission of statistical data during the ninety minutes of a match. Authorities will keep evaluating its performance to try to correct the faults related to brightness and contrast.

If the required visual improvements are achieved, the technology could be adopted on a regular basis in the main categories of South American football, according to the source. No timeline for that decision has been announced.

Technology in refereeing has expanded steadily in recent years, with video review and semi-automated systems now common in major competitions. Most of those tools help officials make decisions, while this device focuses on communicating and recording them. The key test for the Uruguayan trial will be whether the cards are as easy for players and spectators to see as the paper ones they replace, since visible signals are central to how the game communicates discipline.

The technology carries obvious logistical benefits, because referees no longer depend on cardboards that can be dropped, lost or misread, and data flows directly into the official system while the ninety minutes are still running.

For the Uruguayan Football Association, the real value of the tool lies in how it optimizes the collection and transmission of statistics. Every booking, substitution and incident becomes part of a digital record the moment it happens, a change that could improve accuracy in reports that have long depended on memory and hurried notes.

FIFA Drops Private Investment Plan, Infantino Proposes $6.35B Program

FIFA President Gianni Infantino apologized to the governing body’s Council in Zurich over the mishandling of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project and confirmed the proposal to sell competition stakes to outside investors has been withdrawn permanently.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino offered the apology this Thursday during the first Council meeting held in Zurich after the World Cup. He acknowledged errors in both the management and the communication of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative, a plan that would have handed private investors a share of FIFA competitions.

Addressing the council members directly, the Swiss-Italian executive sought to close the episode with a call for unity. The investment scheme, he confirmed, would not be revived.

The administration then presented an alternative designed to soften the blow: a proposal named the Surplus Solidarity Program channels 6.35 billion dollars for the period between 2027 and 2030, drawing on commercial revenue generated by the World Cup. According to Infantino, the funds would raise the amounts distributed among all 211 member associations and the confederations.

That financial package will be evaluated at the December meeting in Doha and put to a vote at the Congress scheduled for March 18, 2027.

Europe Presses for Exit

Despite the financial announcement, the most critical European federations, including England and Germany, maintained their opposition to Infantino remaining in office. The English federation said it has not received clear answers about the legal background of the FFE project, while the German side called for a change in the organization’s leadership.

Support for the president came from Africa. Ahmed Yahya, president of Mauritania’s football federation, defended the current leadership, saying it promotes equality and an equal weight for each vote in the Congress. He said a majority backs Infantino staying at the head of the institution.

The competing messages reflect a familiar divide in world football’s governance. Larger, wealthier federations tend to push for tighter scrutiny of FIFA’s leadership, while many smaller associations benefit directly from FIFA’s development funds. Because each of the 211 members has a vote at the Congress, a spending increase aimed at all of them is likely to be closely watched.

Governance Review Ordered

The Council also agreed to create a working group to review FIFA’s governance framework. It tasked an evaluation of the FIFA Peace Prize and asked the Legal Commission for a report on disciplinary procedures, to be presented at the December session.

The apology and the withdrawal mark a significant concession from a president who has dominated world football’s finances for a decade. By scrapping the FFE plan outright, Infantino acknowledged that the backlash within the game had grown too costly to ignore.

Supporters of the solidarity plan may argue that it directs World Cup profits toward the wider football community. Critics may counter that a funding increase does not answer questions about how the FFE project was handled, which is the point the European federations are pressing. Yet the European federations made clear that closing the project alone would not settle the matter. For them, the questions about how the initiative was conceived and who approved it remain open, and the December gathering in Doha now looms as the next test of whether the unity Infantino called for can actually be rebuilt.

Michael Jordan’s 1998 Finals Jersey Sells for a Record $14 Million

A game-worn Michael Jordan jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals has sold for $14 million, setting a new record for basketball memorabilia and becoming the second most expensive piece of sports clothing ever sold.

The red road jersey, signed by Jordan and worn during Game 2 of the 1998 championship series, changed hands in a private transaction that underscores the surging financial value attached to objects tied to the Chicago Bulls legend’s career.

The sale confirms the commercial pull of “The Last Dance” season, widely regarded as the closing chapter of Jordan’s defining run.

Pennsylvania-based auction house Hunt Auctions managed the negotiation, which ended with the garment delivered to Ron Firman, a real estate investor based in Miami. The shirt corresponds specifically to the second game of the Finals, played on June 5, 1998.

The context of that game accounts for much of the jersey’s value. In it, Chicago beat the Utah Jazz to even the series, which the Bulls went on to win 4-2. The victory was key to the franchise’s sixth title and to the close of the era chronicled in the media as “The Last Dance,” the season that cemented Jordan’s legacy.

A Rising Market

The international market for sports collectibles has been climbing steadily, and items from that final campaign command a premium all their own. Jerseys worn in Games 1 and 3 of the same series previously sold for $10.1 million and $12.3 million, respectively, providing a direct benchmark for the latest transaction.

The shoes Jordan wore in that second game offer another reference point, which were sold in 2023 for $2.2 million, a figure that once seemed remarkable and now reads as modest alongside the prices fetched by his game-worn shirts.

What sets the red jersey apart is the convergence of several factors at once. It is autographed, it comes from a decisive road victory, and it belongs to a season loaded with symbolic weight. Collectors have treated that specific campaign as the peak of Jordan’s market, and each authenticated piece from it tends to reset expectations upward.

The private nature of the sale also reflects how the high end of this market operates. Deals at this scale often move outside public auction rooms, arranged directly between wealthy buyers and the firms that hold the most coveted inventory. Firman, the buyer, joins a growing list of investors who treat championship-grade memorabilia as an alternative asset class rather than a sentimental purchase. Because the deal was private, details such as the exact terms and whether the seller was a collector or an institution were not disclosed in the information available.

Behind Babe Ruth

With the $14 million price, the jersey ranks as the second most expensive sports garment sold to date. Across all sports, only one garment has commanded a higher price. That record belongs to the uniform Babe Ruth wore with the New York Yankees during the 1932 World Series, which sold for $24.12 million in 2024. Jordan’s jersey still trails that figure by a wide margin, but the gap illustrates just how far basketball collectibles have climbed in a short period.

Whether other Jordan items from that series will reach the market, and at what price, remains to be seen. The Game 2 jersey now joins the Game 1 and Game 3 jerseys as part of a small group of Finals-worn pieces that have changed hands for eight-figure sums.

The broader trend shows no sign of slowing. Auction houses and private dealers continue to report strong demand for authenticated gear from iconic athletes, and Jordan remains the single most bankable name in the basketball segment. His championship items, in particular, attract interest from investors who see them as scarce, appreciating assets with global recognition.

Each new sale resets the conversation about value. The $14 million price for the Game 2 jersey surpasses the totals for the other two shirts from that series combined, a sign that the market rewards provenance and narrative as much as rarity. The buyer now holds a piece tied to one of the most documented seasons in U.S. sports history.

For collectors and investors watching the sector, the transaction sends a clear signal. Jordan-era memorabilia from the 1998 Finals has entered a price range once reserved for baseball’s most storied artifacts, and the appetite for such items remains strong.
