Taxpayers get more Time as FBR pushes Deadline to October 31

15 October 2026 at 19:33

ISLAMABAD – Relief for taxpayers as Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) extended deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 to October 31, giving individuals, businesses and companies another opportunity to complete their tax obligations.

The latest extension comes after persistent demands from trade bodies and tax bar associations, which had urged the tax authority to allow more time for filing returns. The deadline was originally set for September 30 before the FBR moved it to October 15. With the latest decision, taxpayers now have until the end of October to submit their returns.

According to the FBR’s latest circular, the extension has been granted under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, and applies to taxpayers whose original filing deadline was September 30, 2026.

The repeated extensions show pressure surrounding this year’s tax filing process, with business representatives calling for greater flexibility to help taxpayers meet their legal requirements.

Trade organizations and tax bar associations had raised concerns about difficulties in completing returns within the prescribed timeframe. Earlier, tax professionals had also pointed to delays in the availability of return forms and technical problems with the FBR’s IRIS online filing system as obstacles to timely compliance.

The FBR said its latest decision followed requests from various trade bodies and tax bar associations.

Petrol Price Cut by Rs3.63 to Rs390.23, Diesel Increased to Rs396.96

15 October 2026 at 19:11

ISLAMABAD – The federal government reduced petrol prices by Rs3.63 per litre while increasing the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs0.31, offering motorists some relief but raising costs for diesel users.

Under revised rates effective Friday, October 16, 2026, petrol will cost Rs390.23 per litre, down from Rs393.86, while high-speed diesel will be priced at Rs396.96 per litre, compared with the previous rate of Rs396.65.

Petroleum Division announced the latest revision following a review by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) under the government’s petroleum pricing mechanism. The adjustment reflects movements in international market indicators, including Platts rates, premiums and other associated costs.

Earlier in the day, Brent crude futures fell by $1.15, or 1.1%, to $104.91 per barrel by 1157 GMT. In contrast, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose by 31 cents, or 0.3%, to $95.40 per barrel, supported by expectations of a substantial decline in weekly US oil inventories.

High-speed diesel is widely used in freight transportation, agriculture and commercial operations. Higher diesel costs can increase transport and production expenses, potentially putting additional pressure on the prices of essential commodities and other goods.

15 October 2026 at 16:32

QUETTA – Authorities in Balochistan detained 104 Afghan nationals during operations in Dasht and Turbat, foiling an alleged attempt to travel illegally to Iran and Europe, security sources said.

The arrests come amid intensified security operations across the province, where authorities are also pursuing counterterrorism efforts in several districts.

According to security sources, the Afghan nationals were apprehended while allegedly attempting to leave the country through illegal routes. However, further details about their identities, the suspected human-smuggling network and subsequent legal proceedings were not immediately available.

Security forces killed seven terrorists during intelligence-based operations in Washuk and Mastung districts, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) and security sources.

ISPR said five terrorists belonging to the group Fitna al-Hindustan were killed during an operation in Washuk on the night of October 12–13. The terrorists’ hideout was destroyed, while weapons, ammunition and explosives were recovered from the site, the military’s media wing said. A clearance operation was underway to search for any additional terrorists in the area.

Separately, security sources said two terrorists were killed near Paringabad in Mastung under Operation Radd-ul-Fitna 3 after reports of terrorist movement in the area.

ISPR said counterterrorism operations would continue under Azm-e-Istehkam to combat terrorism allegedly backed by foreign elements. Security sources also reaffirmed their commitment to tackling terrorism and preventing human smuggling in Balochistan.

Sri Lanka suffer major blow as Pathum Nissanka ruled out of Pakistan-England Tri-Series

15 October 2026 at 16:06

LAHORE – Sri Lanka have suffered a major setback ahead of the tri-nation ODI series involving Pakistan and England, as opening batter Pathum Nissanka has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Lahiru Udara has been named as his replacement in the Sri Lankan squad.

According to report, Nissanka will miss the tri-nation ODI series, which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan and features Sri Lanka, Pakistan and England.

Nissanka sustained an injury to his left thigh muscle during Sri Lanka’s tour of England and has yet to make a full recovery. He was initially included in Sri Lanka’s 16-member squad for the tri-series subject to passing a fitness test. However, his failure to recover in time means he will be unavailable for the matches against Pakistan and England.

Following Nissanka’s withdrawal, Sri Lanka Cricket selected Lahiru Udara as his replacement. The 32-year-old will now represent Sri Lanka in the ODI series against Pakistan and England.

Udara has played five Test matches and seven T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka but is yet to make his debut in One-Day International cricket.

He has earned another opportunity in white-ball cricket following an impressive batting performance in the first T20 International against Pakistan. Udara scored 91 runs off 55 balls in the opening match, the highest individual score by a Sri Lankan batter in the T20 series.

In July this year, Udara also produced an impressive innings of 188 runs in a Test match against the West Indies. However, he has struggled to maintain that form, failing to score more than 30 runs in his subsequent five Test innings.

Udara was not included in Sri Lanka’s squad for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, making the tri-nation ODI tournament an important opportunity for him to establish himself at the international level.

In List A cricket, Udara has scored runs at an average of 32.09 and a strike rate of 85.97 across 97 innings.

ECP rejects Punjab’s proposal to hold local govt elections in April 2027

15 October 2026 at 14:32

ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected the Punjab government’s proposal to hold local government elections in phases in April 2027, deciding instead to proceed with issuing the election schedule without delay.

The commission has also directed the provincial government to provide lists of officers for appointment as District Returning Officers (DROs), Returning Officers (ROs) and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs) within one week.

According to an official statement, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja to discuss local government elections in Punjab and cantonment areas. ECP members Nisar Ahmad Durrani, Babar Hassan Bharwana and Justice (retired) Ikramullah Khan, along with the commission’s secretary and other senior officials, attended the meeting.

Punjab Government Proposes April 2027 Polls

During the briefing, the ECP was informed that the Punjab government had responded on October 14, 2026, to the commission’s October 2 letter and draft election programme.

The provincial government proposed holding local government elections in three phases in April 2027, citing dense fog and severe winter conditions in December, followed by the beginning of Ramadan in February.

However, the ECP described the response as unsatisfactory, stating that consultations with the provincial government under Section 219(3) of the Elections Act had been completed on August 20, 2026.

During those consultations, the Punjab government had agreed to hold local government elections between December 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. The commission said the provincial government was now seeking to change the previously agreed dates.

Taking into account its constitutional and legal responsibilities, the ECP decided to proceed with local government elections in Punjab and issue the schedule promptly. The commission directed its office to immediately submit the draft election programme for approval.

The ECP also expressed disappointment that the provincial government had not provided the required lists of officers for election duties, despite earlier instructions. It has now given the government one week to submit the lists.

ECP Decides to Proceed with Cantonment Elections

The commission also reviewed progress on local government elections in cantonment areas.

The meeting was informed that consultations had taken place on April 15, 2026, with the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and the Director General of the Military Lands and Cantonments Department.

During the meeting, the ECP had asked the Ministry of Defence secretary to submit a summary to the federal government so that it could formally request the commission to conduct cantonment elections under Section 19(D) of the Cantonments Act, 1924.

The commission said it had sent several reminder letters to the Ministry of Defence. The Chief Election Commissioner had also written to the prime minister on the matter, but no satisfactory response had been received.

In view of its constitutional and legal obligations, the ECP decided to proceed with elections in cantonment areas as well.

The commission has directed its office to immediately submit the cantonment election programme for approval, paving the way for the announcement of election schedules for both Punjab’s local governments and cantonment areas.

Joint sitting of Parliament endorses emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

15 October 2026 at 14:23

ISLAMABAD – A joint sitting of Parliament on Thursday approved the imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), with 214 lawmakers voting in favour of the move and 56 opposing it.

The session was chaired by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. During the proceedings, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry presented the presidential proclamation for imposing an emergency under Article 232(7) of the Constitution.

Opposition lawmakers staged a protest during the voting process, prompting the speaker to order a formal vote count.

The National Assembly and Senate had approved the emergency a day earlier, while opposition parties rejected the decision and boycotted the proceedings.

During the session, Ayaz Sadiq renewed his invitation to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to engage in dialogue in the National Assembly. Production orders were also issued for PTI lawmakers Sanaullah Mastikhel and Dawar Kundi.

Federal Government Announces Emergency Measures and Governor’s Rule

The federal government announced emergency measures and governor’s rule in KP following a cabinet meeting. President Asif Ali Zardari approved the decision on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Islamabad has justified its intervention by citing an increase in militant attacks and concerns over the provincial administration’s handling of counterterrorism operations.

The government has invoked Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, which address emergency powers and circumstances in which a provincial government is considered unable to function in accordance with constitutional requirements.

PTI leaders, however, have rejected the federal government’s allegations, claiming that security concerns are being used as a pretext to undermine the party’s political position in the province.

The development comes as PTI prepares to launch a long march from KP to Islamabad, demanding the release of its jailed founder, Imran Khan.

PTI Challenges Emergency in Peshawar High Court

PTI has moved the Peshawar High Court to challenge the imposition of the emergency and governor’s rule, opening a legal battle over the federal government’s intervention in the province.

The parliamentary approval comes amid an ongoing dispute between Islamabad and the former PTI-led provincial administration over security policy and constitutional authority.

Meanwhile, the federal government has approved the establishment of an Area Development Secretariat to oversee governance, security and development initiatives in several southern and former tribal districts of KP.

The areas covered by the proposed secretariat include Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Kurram and North Waziristan.

Existence of God — Reason, Science, and Humanity’s Greatest Question

15 October 2026 at 14:03

Written by: Shahzad Shami

Existence Of God Reason Science And Humanitys Greatest Question

Part One: The Question of God — What Is the Foundation of Existence?

When human beings first looked up at the sky, observed the stars, watched the Sun rise and set, and witnessed the changing seasons, a fundamental question must have arisen in their minds:

Why does all this exist?

The question may sound simple, but it leads us towards one of the deepest mysteries of human thought. Why is there a universe at all? Why does anything exist rather than nothing? And if everything around us exists for some reason, what is the ultimate foundation of existence itself?

Throughout history, human beings have tried to answer these questions. Different civilisations and religions have offered different explanations. With the development of science, our understanding of the universe has expanded enormously. We now know that the Earth revolves around the Sun, that the Sun is one star among billions in our galaxy, and that our galaxy is only one among countless galaxies in the observable universe.

Science has also helped us understand how stars form, how planets develop, how life functions, and how the human body works. Discoveries in physics, chemistry, biology and genetics have revealed many of the mechanisms through which nature operates.

These achievements are remarkable. Yet they bring us back to an important distinction.

Explaining how something works is not always the same as explaining why it exists.

For example, science explains how the Earth revolves around the Sun. It describes gravity and the laws governing the movement of celestial bodies. But a deeper question remains: why do these laws exist in the first place? Why is there a universe governed by laws at all?

This does not mean that science is incapable of answering important questions. On the contrary, science has answered many questions that once seemed beyond human understanding. Nor does it mean that every unanswered question is evidence of God. Such a conclusion would be premature.

The question we are considering is more fundamental.

Suppose that one day we understand every process in the universe, from the movement of the smallest particles to the formation of the largest galaxies. Would that knowledge, by itself, explain why the universe exists at all?

To understand this problem, let us consider the things we encounter in everyday life.

A building depends on its materials, its foundations and the people who construct it. A human being depends on parents for birth and on food, water, air and suitable conditions for survival. Plants depend on sunlight, water and nutrients. The Earth exists within a larger cosmic system governed by physical laws.

In each case, we find something that depends, in one way or another, on something else.

This leads us to a basic question: if the things within the universe depend on other things, what explains the existence of the universe as a whole?

Could the universe itself be the ultimate reality, requiring no further explanation? Or is there a more fundamental reality on which the universe depends?

These are philosophical questions, and they deserve careful consideration.

We should not begin by assuming that everything must have a cause and then simply declare that God is the cause. That formulation immediately raises another question: if everything needs a cause, then what caused God?

The more precise question is whether everything that exists must be dependent on something else, or whether there can be a fundamental reality that does not depend on anything beyond itself.

In Islamic thought, this question leads towards the concept of Wajib-ul-Wujood, commonly translated as the Necessary Existent: a reality whose existence does not depend on another reality, while everything else ultimately depends upon it.

This concept does not, by itself, settle every question about God. We must still consider what such a fundamental reality would be like and whether there are good reasons to identify it with the Creator described in Islam.

But it gives us a starting point for a serious inquiry.

Modern cosmology has added another dimension to this discussion. According to the Big Bang model, the observable universe developed from an extremely hot and dense early state approximately 13.8 billion years ago. Space itself has been expanding, and scientists continue to investigate the universe’s earliest history.

The Big Bang is not, by itself, proof of God’s existence. Scientific research into the early universe does not automatically establish a religious conclusion. Nevertheless, it raises questions about the nature of cosmic beginnings, the role of physical laws and whether our understanding of the universe’s history also explains its ultimate existence.

We must also be careful about the word beginning. Questions about what happened before the Big Bang are complicated because our familiar understanding of time is connected to the physical universe. Scientists and philosophers continue to examine what this means for our understanding of cosmic origins.

Even if we eventually develop a more complete account of the universe’s earliest moments, the deeper question may remain: why does this reality, with its particular laws and properties, exist at all?

This is where the question of God enters our discussion—not as a substitute for scientific investigation, but as a possible answer to a question that goes beyond describing physical processes.

The Islamic understanding of God begins with the idea that Allah is not merely one powerful being among other beings within the universe. He is the Creator on whom the existence of the universe itself depends. He is not a product of the universe, nor is He subject to the limitations that govern created things.

Whether this understanding provides the most convincing explanation is something we must examine through reason, observation and, eventually, revelation.

We should therefore avoid rushing towards a conclusion. A serious inquiry requires us to consider the evidence, understand the alternatives and distinguish between what science establishes, what philosophy argues and what religion claims through revelation.

Our journey will examine the beginning of the universe, the remarkable order of its laws, the emergence of life, evolution, genetic information and human consciousness. We will also consider whether the universe can be its own ultimate explanation and whether the idea of a necessary, intelligent Creator offers a more complete account of existence.

The purpose is not to manufacture a conflict between science and religion. It is to follow the questions wherever careful reasoning takes us.

For behind our knowledge of galaxies, particles, living organisms and the human mind lies a question that remains remarkably simple:

Why is the universe the way it is?

Pakistan tightens net on Fake Drugs with Mandatory 2D Barcodes

15 October 2026 at 13:58

ISLAMABAD – Pakistani authorities have taken a major step toward tightening control over the country’s pharmaceutical market, with Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) making unique 2D Data Matrix barcodes and serial numbers mandatory for registered medicines manufactured locally or imported from October 9, 2026.

The move marks first phase of the country’s Pharmaceutical Track and Trace System, a regulatory initiative aimed at curbing counterfeit, falsified, spurious and unregistered medicines while strengthening oversight of the supply chain.

Under new requirements, pharmaceutical products falling within the scope of the regulations must carry unique identification codes containing key information about the product, its batch, expiry date and individual serial number. The system is expected to make medicines easier to trace and help authorities respond more effectively when safety concerns or suspected counterfeiting emerge.

The requirement applies to local manufacturers, multinational pharmaceutical companies and importers, covering registered medicines for human and veterinary use, including products intended for poultry.

The implementation came under review at a meeting chaired by Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal on or around October 15, 2026, attended by the chief executives of DRAP and the National Information Technology Board (NITB). During the meeting, the DRAP chief briefed participants on the barcode and serialization arrangements. Kamal said the Ministry of Health had been working on the initiative for approximately 18 months, reaffirming the government’s commitment to eliminating counterfeit medicines from the market.

The minister also underscored the requirements for local and multinational manufacturers and highlighted restrictions on the sale of imported medicines that do not carry the prescribed codes. He further confirmed that the system extends beyond human medicines to veterinary and poultry products.

The expanded scope reflects the authorities’ approach to pharmaceutical safety as an issue that reaches beyond conventional healthcare, given the potential public-health implications of medicines used in animals.

By linking these details to individual packs, the system is intended to improve the traceability of medicines as they move through the pharmaceutical supply chain.

The information could assist regulators in investigating suspicious products, locating affected batches and coordinating recalls when medicines are found to be defective or unsafe. Companies that fail to comply with the applicable requirements may face legal action. However, serialization is not an absolute guarantee of authenticity. Counterfeiters could potentially copy legitimate codes, making effective verification, regulatory inspections and enforcement essential to the system’s success.

Despite the new mandate, consumers and retailers should not assume that every medicine without a 2D barcode is counterfeit. Products manufactured or imported before October 9, 2026, are exempt from the new coding requirement and may continue to be distributed and sold legally, subject to other applicable regulations.

This means pharmacies and medical stores may continue to stock older packaging while newly coded products gradually enter the market. The transition is expected to take place as existing inventories are sold and replaced. For consumers, the date of manufacture or import and the regulatory status of the product are therefore important considerations when assessing packaging that lacks the new identification code.

The initiative is also expected to introduce a digital verification facility through which consumers, pharmacists and medical store operators can check medicine details using a mobile application. According to ministerial statements and media reports, the proposed service is intended to help users verify product authenticity and access information such as price and expiry date.

However, details of the public-facing application have appeared more prominently in ministerial announcements and secondary reporting than in DRAP’s formal circulars, which primarily focus on manufacturers’ and importers’ obligations. The availability, precise functions and operating arrangements of the consumer application should therefore be confirmed through official announcements.

Growing anxiety over financial sustainability of AI boom is sending shockwaves through credit markets, with the cost of protecting against potential debt defaults by major US technology companies surging and investors increasingly questioning whether the sector’s multibillion-dollar infrastructure investments will deliver the promised returns.

Credit Default Swap (CDS) costs climbed sharply for several tech companies, showing mounting concerns about debt exposure, borrowing costs and the profitability of the enormous investments being poured into AI infrastructure.

The warning signs are emerging despite AI-related stocks having recorded substantial gains in global markets this year. Over recent weeks, however, several companies have suffered notable share-price declines as investors reassess valuations amid inflationary pressures and rising interest rates.

CoreWeave raised alarm as CDS protection costs surged beyond 1,000 basis points, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data cited in the report. The level is being interpreted as implying an approximately 63% probability of default over five years, compared with around 30% a year earlier.

The dramatic increase shows credit-market concerns surrounding highly leveraged businesses at the heart of the AI infrastructure boom. However, the implied probability is a market-based estimate, not a confirmed forecast that CoreWeave will default. CoreWeave is not the only company attracting greater scrutiny from credit-market investors.

iPhone 18 to carry ‘Higher Price Tag’ as Apple’s Costs jump amid AI Boom

CDS protection costs for Oracle have climbed to approximately 300 basis points, while Nvidia’s have risen to around 90 basis points in recent weeks. Meta’s CDS costs have reached approximately 104 basis points. By comparison, CDS index tracking investment-grade debt stands at around 60 basis points.

The gap shows how credit investors are assigning different levels of risk to individual companies compared with the broader investment-grade market. The trend also extends to major technology names, including Apple, Amazon and Microsoft, as demand for protection against potential debt defaults has increased across the sector. The report indicates that the pressure has been even more pronounced among certain heavily indebted competitors, suppliers and customers.

Rising CDS costs do not mean that these companies are on the verge of bankruptcy. They indicate that investors are demanding more money to insure against potential credit losses. The developments are unfolding against the backdrop of a vast global credit market.

International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) puts the market for CDS contracts linked to individual companies and debt issuers at approximately $9 trillion. Meanwhile, figures from the Bank for International Settlements indicate that the global bond market contains more than $150 trillion in debt securities.

Data from Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation show that average daily trading volume in the CDS market reached $16 billion in the second quarter, up from $13 billion a year earlier.

A credit default swap is a financial contract that provides protection against specified credit events, such as a borrower failing to meet its debt obligations. Investors use CDS contracts to hedge potential losses on bonds or to take positions based on their assessment of credit risk. The contracts are priced in basis points. At a CDS rate of 100 basis points, protection on $100 of debt costs approximately $1 annually.

As perceived default risk rises, investors typically demand higher premiums for providing protection, pushing CDS costs upward. Higher protection costs can also signal broader market concerns. Investors may sell the underlying bonds, potentially driving up borrowing costs for the companies involved and placing further pressure on their finances.

However, payouts depend on the terms of the contracts and whether a qualifying credit event occurs.

Naqvi slams Sohail Afridi of refusing to back Pak Army’s Anti-Terror Operations

15 October 2026 at 12:32

ISLAMABAD – Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi called out Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, saying he repeatedly refused to politically support operations against terrorists, saying he could not afford such a move politically.

Addressing a joint session of Parliament, Naqvi claimed that the federal government had made repeated efforts to secure the KP government’s cooperation in counterterrorism operations but failed to persuade the provincial leadership to take ownership of the fight.

“We wanted this to be Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s fight. We simply wanted you to lead it, but the provincial government was not ready to take the lead,” Naqvi said, alleging that the provincial leadership had also failed to publicly condemn terrorism.

Naqvi claimed that Sohail Afridi had repeatedly expressed reluctance to support counterterrorism operations for political reasons. The interior minister said he had personally met Afridi several times and had agreed with him on strengthening police forces in five districts so they could take action against militants.

“I personally settled this matter with Sohail Afridi,” Naqvi said, adding that questions remained about who was influencing the chief minister after their meetings. Naqvi further claimed that the federal government had been trying since August, September or even earlier to secure the provincial government’s cooperation against terrorism, but the efforts had not produced the desired results.

Addressing speculation surrounding governor’s rule and the possible imposition of an emergency in parts of KP, Naqvi insisted that the federal government had not wanted to take such measures. He said the government had continued trying until the final hour to prevent an emergency from being imposed in 12 districts.

“We are not happy about governor’s rule or an emergency. The federal government take no pleasure in it,” he said, over such measures. Naqvi also rejected the suggestion that the government was exploiting terrorism for political purposes, saying that federal representatives had attended funeral prayers in Peshawar while, according to him, provincial government representatives were absent.

He cited the deaths of security personnel in Bannu and alleged that the chief minister had delivered a speech against the army the following day.

In a separate part of his address, Naqvi rejected claims that the federal government had abandoned negotiations with the opposition. He said the government had neither withdrawn from the talks nor imposed a deadline, insisting that it had repeatedly returned to the negotiating table.

According to Naqvi, the opposition had presented a document containing conditions that it said had been proposed by the KP government. He claimed the federal side had accepted those conditions, with the final point added by the government.

Naqvi maintained that he had personally intervened whenever KP faced financial difficulties, taking the provincial chief minister to the prime minister in an effort to resolve outstanding issues.

He renewed his offer of negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, urging senior party leaders to meet the government with the authority to make decisions. “Let PTI’s senior leaders come and talk. They should come with the authority to make decisions, and we will also come with authority from our prime minister. Whatever is agreed upon will be decided there and then,” he said.

Naqvi made clear that the government wanted negotiations to produce immediate decisions rather than agreements that would subsequently require approval from party leadership.

Pakistan eyes ‘B+’ Moody Rating as Aurangzeb makes Case for Stronger Credit Standing

15 October 2026 at 11:44

BANGKOK – Pakistan is seeking sovereign credit rating upgrade as Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb holds talks Moody’s on economic stability, rising foreign exchange reserves and debt management, while exploring expanded OPEC Fund financing for key infrastructure projects, including the M6 motorway and ML-1 railway.

During talks on sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Aurangzeb discussed Pakistan’s economic outlook, its recent rating improvement and prospects for further progress, according to the Finance Ministry. The discussions come as Islamabad targets a ‘B+’ sovereign rating by the July–September quarter of fiscal year 2027–28.

Pakistan Eyes B Moody Rating As Aurangzeb Makes Case For Stronger Credit Standing

His pitch to Moody’s rests on several key developments: rising foreign exchange reserves, a contained current account deficit, lower forward liabilities at the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and renewed access to international capital markets. Aurangzeb also outlined plans to replace expensive short-term borrowing with financing carrying longer maturities, with the objective of easing repayment pressures without increasing the country’s overall external debt stock.

The finance minister reaffirmed that Pakistan would need to sustain structural reforms and build an export-led growth model beyond the current IMF programme to strengthen its economic position over the longer term.

He also sought Moody’s views on the requirements for a further rating improvement, including how the agency weighs political risks against improvements in economic performance.

Pakistan has already secured improvements in its sovereign credit standing. S&P Global Ratings raised the country’s rating to ‘B’ from ‘B-’ in July 2026, retaining a stable outlook. Moody’s subsequently upgraded Pakistan from ‘Caa1’ to ‘B3’ in August, also assigning a stable outlook.

Aurangzeb said earlier this month that Pakistan could reach the ‘B+’ category by the first quarter of fiscal year 2027–28, provided the country maintains its macroeconomic stability and continues implementing structural reforms. The target, however, remains an expectation rather than a confirmed decision by the rating agencies.

The government’s immediate challenge is to turn improved economic indicators into a more durable financial position by managing debt repayments, maintaining foreign exchange buffers and reducing reliance on short-term external financing.

Alongside rating discussions, Aurangzeb met Dr Abdulhamid Alkhalifa, president of the OPEC Fund for International Development, to explore expanded financing support for Pakistan’s trade and development projects. The finance minister briefed Alkhalifa on Pakistan’s economic stabilisation, progress under the IMF programme and renewed access to international capital markets. He welcomed the Fund’s willingness to broaden its financing support.

The M6 motorway emerged as a central item on the agenda, with discussions covering the approved first tranche, the pending loan agreement and subsequent financing tranches. The two sides also identified the modernisation of the ML-1 railway line and improvements to power transmission infrastructure as priority areas requiring further attention.

Both officials stressed the need to accelerate approvals and improve coordination to prevent delays in project implementation. Regional peace and stability also featured in their discussions.

FACT CHECK: Peshawar’s BRT Buses shifting to Punjab amid Governor’s Rule?

15 October 2026 at 11:11

PESHAWAR – Several internet users are sharing unverified posts online, saying Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses are being moved to Punjab after the imposition of Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The claims started doing rounds online after videos showing multiple buses loaded onto trailers were shared across social media platforms, including X. Several posts alleged that the buses were being taken out of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the province’s political developments on October 11.

Trans Peshawar handled responded to these claims, saying the viral footage is old and shows buses being transported to Peshawar, rather than being removed from the city.

An X account claimed that 200 buses belonging to Peshawar Metro’s BRT service had been transferred to Punjab after Governor’s Rule was imposed. Other users echoed the allegation, suggesting that the province’s public assets and mineral resources could also be moved outside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

An X user named Aram Javed claimed that Peshawar’s BRT buses were being taken to Punjab, while the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Faisalabad account shared the video alleging that residents were being deprived of facilities established during the PTI government. Former prime minister Imran Khan’s former special assistant Shahbaz Gill also shared a video, asking: “Who is stealing these BRT buses and taking them away?”

These posts fuelled speculation that the buses were being transferred under the cover of Governor’s Rule.

TransPeshawar, the organisation responsible for operating Peshawar’s BRT service, issued a clarification on October 14, dismissing the claims as baseless and misleading. The organisation said the video being circulated was old and dated from the period when BRT buses were being brought to Peshawar.

It urged the public not to believe unverified reports or share misleading information. The explanation contradicts the central claim attached to the viral video: that the buses were being transported out of Peshawar to Punjab.

TransPeshawar also announced that 27 additional new buses were expected to reach Peshawar during the week. According to the organisation, 52 buses purchased during the year were being added to the fleet. Of these, 25 had already arrived, while the remaining 27 were expected to reach the city.

The announcement provides further context to the controversy, although the fleet expansion figures alone do not independently establish the origin or date of every bus shown in the viral footage.

Punjab Minister for Transport and Mass Transit Bilal Akbar Khan also rejected the claim that the buses were heading to Punjab. Responding to Shahbaz Gill’s post, he said the vehicles shown in the footage were travelling to Peshawar. He added that Punjab did not need Peshawar’s buses because it already operated a large fleet of electric buses and was purchasing additional vehicles.

‘Khan’ to become UK’s No. 1 Newborn Surname by 2027; Here’s What New Data shows

15 October 2026 at 10:49

Khan is used primarily surname across Asia, and Eastern Europe, and now this name is closing in on ‘Smith’ as Britain’s changing demographics reshape the surnames given to newborns.

Official figures show narrowing gap, while traditional British names continue to lose ground. A change in Britain’s naming landscape could see ‘Khan’ overtake ‘Smith to become the most common surname among newborn babies in England and Wales by 2027, according to data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics.

The long-standing lead held by ‘Smith’ narrowed sharply over the past 30 years amid Britain’s migration patterns and birth trends. Last year, Smith’ remained in first place, with 4,102 newborns registered under the surname. But ‘Khan’ was close behind, with 3,772 babies with a difference of just 330.

According to the reported figures, the number of newborns registered with ‘Smith’ has been declining by an average of 4% annually, while ‘Khan’ has been gaining popularity at an average rate of 1.9% a year. If those trends continue, ‘Khan’ could claim the top spot in 2027, marking a significant milestone in the changing composition of newborns’ surnames in England and Wales.

By 2025, only three names from that original traditional British-background group remained in the top 10, while ‘Khan’, ‘Ahmed’, ‘Singh’ and ‘Hussain’ had joined the rankings.

The decline in several established surnames has been substantial. Compared with 1996, the number of newborns registered with ‘Smith’ fell by 44% in 2025. The figures also show declines of 43% for ‘Jones’ and 41% for ‘Williams’.

The changing rankings extend beyond ‘Khan’. The surname ‘Ibrahim’ has increased, moving from 563rd place in 1996 to 73rd in 2025. The emergence of names like ‘Ibrahim’, ‘Ahmed’, ‘Singh’ and ‘Hussain’ among the most frequently registered newborn surnames further illustrates how the list has evolved over three decades.

Experts point at increased migration from South Asian countries, differences in birth rates among families from different backgrounds, and the concentration of particular surnames within some communities.

At the same time, the balance of births involving mothers born in the UK and those born overseas has changed. A decline in births to UK-born mothers could increase the overall share of babies born to mothers who were born abroad. ONS figures show that, since 2008, births to mothers born in the UK have fallen by 29%, while births to mothers born overseas have risen by 18%.

‘Muhammad’ already tops boys’ name rankings

The changing surname rankings come amid a similar shift in the first names given to newborns. ‘Muhammad’ became the most popular boys’ name in England and Wales for the first time in 2023, when more than 4,600 babies were registered with that name.

It retained the top position in 2024 and 2025. Alternative spellings of the name have also featured among popular choices. First names and surnames are recorded and ranked differently, so the rise of ‘Muhammad’ does not itself explain the projected rise of ‘Khan’. Together, however, the trends highlight changes in the names most frequently recorded among newborns.
