Deported Haitians return to an unfamiliar country with no resources for them

21 October 2026 at 13:01

It was Saturday night and Jean, a Haitian who arrived in the United States nearly 20 years ago, had left his job in Broward, north of Miami, hours earlier. But he never made it home. He wasn’t answering his phone and the location of his AirPods remained in the same place. Around 1 a.m., his doctor—also a family friend—went out to look for him and found the car unattended in a parking lot. At that point, Jean himself called and said he had been detained by immigration and was at a Border Patrol station in Dania Beach.

Trump administration softens its stance on TPS amid election campaign

21 October 2026 at 12:38

The Donald Trump administration has done with Ukrainians and Sudanese this week what it did last month with Salvadorans: it has not terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS), but it has not renewed it either. The program that provides legal immigration status to 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese citizens was set to expire on Monday, but the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has declined to comment, which for now leaves them protected from deportation.

Feeling blamed and deceived: Latinos who voted for Trump rebel against the Republican Party

19 October 2026 at 11:14

Celia Salmerón had never voted for a Republican candidate. Not until 2024. Then, in the presidential election, she became one of many Latino voters who believed Donald Trump when he promised at every rally that he would deport all criminals and improve the economy. Two years after giving him her support, Salmerón — like so many other Hispanic voters — regrets her decision and says she will vote for the Democratic Party in the midterm elections on November 3. “For everything he’s doing to poor people, for separating parents from their children,” she says as she inserts hair extensions.

From police officer to store employee: The life change of a ‘Dreamer’ who turned in his badge

10 October 2026 at 05:00

Édgar Vázquez Silva’s worst fears came true. His boss at the Stone County sheriff’s office in Mississippi called him and asked him to turn in his badge and uniform. The order was clear: all department officers had to be U.S. citizens or, at minimum, permanent residents.

“Presenças”: Artista Belga Verónique Sabban vai a Loulé para primeira Mostra fora do seu país

9 October 2026 at 07:04

A entrada é livre.

Lourdes M. Rosado, president of LatinoJustice: ‘These elections are the opportunity to tell Trump that his policies are not acceptable’

7 October 2026 at 12:48
Lourdes M. Rosado, attorney and president of LatinoJustice.

John Roberts, the discreet justice who has presided over the United States Supreme Court for two decades, was upset some time ago that people believed the nation’s highest court was making “political decisions.” In several polls, Americans said they were worried not only about how much power the court had amassed but also about all the rulings that have ended up bolstering Donald Trump and his control over the federal government.
