Colombia’s left flexes its muscles in first street protests against De la Espriella

15 October 2026 at 13:29
Protest against the government of Abelardo de la Espriella in Bolívar Square, Bogotá, on Wednesday.

Colombia’s left took to the streets on Wednesday against President Abelardo de la Espriella and fared better than expected. Despite doubts about its ability to mobilize people, fears of police repression stoked by the president himself, the threat of rain and the fact that the protest fell on a weekday, thousands of Colombians demonstrated peacefully for hours. The marches, seen in the country’s main cities, were the first test of the ability of a battered left to mobilize the grassroots after losing power to a right-wing outsider allied openly with the United States and who embodies everything that progressives abhor.

Students recruited via Telegram, amateur saboteurs and hitmen: How Russia outsources its operations in Europe

11 October 2026 at 05:00

On the night of March 20, 2024, unusually humid and mild in London, three people in their twenties pulled up at an industrial estate in the east of the city in a cherry-red Kia Picanto. They went inside, set fire to a warehouse, and filmed the blaze on a cellphone. The video of the flames consuming the premises ended up in the hands of another 20-year-old, Dylan Earl, who was reached via the Telegram messaging app by the Russian paramilitary organization Wagner, linked to the Kremlin, which had in turn recruited others to do the dirty work. One of the burned units contained humanitarian aid and Starlink satellite equipment destined for Ukraine. According to the British investigation, the three young men who lit the fuse did not know they were actually working for Russia.

Kaliningrad, the Russian militarized exclave surrounded by NATO that triggered Putin’s nuclear threat

Aerial view of Königsberg cathedral in Kaliningrad, 2023.

Kaliningrad, the militarized Russian exclave wedged between NATO and EU members Poland and Lithuania and a constant flashpoint between the Kremlin and the Atlantic Alliance, has become the center of Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threat against Europeans. Last week Moscow accused NATO of seeking to block Kaliningrad and threatened to use nuclear weapons if the military organization moves forward with that alleged plan. For the Kremlin, the exclave, which gives it a strategic outlet to the Baltic Sea (it is the only port it can use year-round) and is a key node in its hybrid war against Europe, is an advanced bastion. For NATO, it is a piece on the board that shapes any crisis in the Baltic because it could hinder allied military movements.

Europe fortifies itself against Russia’s hybrid war

3 October 2026 at 05:00

Russia is stepping up its hybrid war against Europe. From sabotage, drone incursions, and arson to plots (mostly foiled) to assassinate pro‑Ukraine activists and Russian dissidents on European soil, the Kremlin is testing the allied response, and incidents against NATO’s European partners are becoming more serious, such as the explosive‑laden drones found this summer at Leipzig Airport in Germany. That gray line between a hybrid attack and a conventional one is blurring, and several European intelligence sources warn of the risk that one of those incidents could escalate — either by a deliberate Kremlin decision or a miscalculation.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu: ‘Tom Cruise loved this film because it freed him from the handsome, strong man that he is’

2 October 2026 at 09:45

Digger is like a mango. It’s an acidic film, but also a bit sweet; outwardly it seems one thing but inside it contains surprises, and it needs time to ripen. Like a mango, its flavor can’t be explained. In fact, it’s better not to even try, says its director, Alejandro González Iñárritu: “The only way to know what a mango tastes like is to put it in your mouth. And you have to put this film in your eyes to understand it, because if I explain it to you, you won’t get it.”

Johnny Cross, ‘the vegan butcher’: ‘I’ve been in the world 34 years and I’ve never eaten meat or fish, and I’m alive, I’m healthy’

In another life, Johnny Cross (Clovenfords, Scotland, 34) might have become a sports journalist covering British football teams, but an Erasmus year in Seville during his final year of university changed everything. There he met Marta, his partner, with whom he now has two children, and he decided to stay in Spain. He also realized sports journalism wasn’t for him, so he began teaching English to make some money — “very typical of the guiris [a Spanish term for British people] here,” he says with a laugh.

Kast faces internal resistance for having added Chile to Trump’s Shield of the Americas

29 September 2026 at 14:46

One week after Chile joined the Shield of the Americas, the regional alliance promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump, domestic resistance against the move has not let up. On the contrary, the membership documents ratified by the government of José Antonio Kast in New York on September 22, along with 14 other countries, have raised new questions about the scope of the initiative.

Lady Gaga, Lena Dunham and surrogacy: Why isn’t it causing a scandal in the United States?

29 September 2026 at 10:57

All three are well-known, globally recognized, and outstanding women in their fields. All three became mothers just days ago, almost simultaneously. All three had children without giving birth to them: one adopted, two used a surrogate. And all three, despite their different methods and the ways they told their stories, received the same warm congratulations. But are the three cases the same? In the United States, for a large majority, the answer is yes.

Madonna and Taylor Swift, queens of an MTV VMA ceremony steeped in nostalgia for Dolly Parton, Nirvana and George Michael

28 September 2026 at 07:39

It has been 42 years since MTV began honoring what it knows best and what, at the time, few people valued: music videos. Four decades have passed and much has changed in the industry. There is no self-respecting artist today who does not present their projects visually, especially in this internet era. A lot has changed since 1984, but only to grow bigger. On Sunday night, artists once again proved it.

Fuad Gaši, coordinator of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault: ‘We have more than 1.4 million samples and the door is only opened three times a year’

27 September 2026 at 05:00

It has been referred to as the “Doomsday Vault” or the “End of the World Vault.” But Fuad Gaši, who has been in charge of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault’s coordination since June of this year, prefers to speak about this seed bank in a somewhat more poetic and hopeful way. He sees the institution — which is located in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard — as a repository of knowledge that ensures the biodiversity of our planet’s crops.

‘Forgotten Island’ turns children’s animation into a song to friendship and roots: ‘Diversity makes us stronger’

25 September 2026 at 18:13

There is nothing a good plate of lechón (piglet) can’t achieve. So can a story that has been in the works for a decade and speaks of friendship, migration, change, roots and food (yes, lechón too), one that is animated and aimed primarily at children, yet carries a message not only for kids. It was over dishes like that and other traditional Filipino foods that Forgotten Island was cooked up for years. Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, who are friends, colleagues and something like compatriots, have been passionately shaping the story all these years, and finally on September 25, 2026, it is opening in movie theaters worldwide.

Darth Vader alongside Picasso and Banksy: George Lucas’s ambitious museum opens in LA

22 September 2026 at 16:03

Explaining the world through images. Humanity has been doing it for millennia: from cave paintings to photography, cinema, living-room television and the omnipresent screens of today. Over the past decades, if there is anyone who has known how to create emotion through images, that is George Lucas, 82, director, writer, producer and the creative mind behind phenomena that have shaped contemporary culture, such as the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. And his eye for visual narratives has not been limited to film: for decades (funded by the lucrative returns of cinema), he has also devoted himself to art collecting, and possesses an immense collection of roughly 40,000 works that he has now decided to share with the world.
