Physicists Just Recreated How Matter Is Born — a Process That Only Happens in the Big Bang or the LHC

24 September 2026 at 10:30
Quarks, the smallest known building blocks of matter, are never seen alone. They are roughly a billion times smaller than an atom and exist only locked inside larger particles such as protons and neutrons — no one has ever observed one in isolation. That impossibility has a name, confinement, and a strange consequence: try to […]

A Burned Iron Age Wall Under a Paris Hospital Could Be the Gaulish Lutetia Caesar Described

23 September 2026 at 15:33
Nobody expects to find a two-thousand-year-old fortification in the courtyards of a working hospital. But that is what archaeologists have uncovered at the Hôtel-Dieu, on the Île de la Cité, the island in the Seine where Notre-Dame stands. The wall runs for about 20 meters (roughly 65 feet) and shows clear signs of having burned […]

A Large Circular Structure, 30 Ritual Jars, a Lead Horn, a Hidden Niche: What a 3,000-year-old Sanctuary in Sardinia Is Revealing About the Bronze Age

23 September 2026 at 09:03
In the mountainous interior of Sardinia, where the Gennargentu massif gives way to the valleys of the Flumendosa river, a site called S’Arcu ‘e is Forros has been surprising archaeologists for more than four decades. Its Sardinian name translates roughly as “the pass of the furnaces” — a fitting label, as it turns out. On […]

A 70-Year-Old Mystery Resurfaces at One of Europe’s Largest Collections of Prehistoric Rock Art

22 September 2026 at 09:04
About 56 miles (90 km) from Brescia and 75 miles (120 km) from Milan, in the Lombard Alps, the forest of Naquane is still turning up surprises after seventy years of excavation. The latest field season, which resumed on August 31, 2026, has uncovered a rock surface that had never been recorded before: a panel […]

A Mysterious Object in Our Galaxy Has Been Emitting a Radio Signal for Two Decades — and Nobody Can Explain Why

21 September 2026 at 09:04
An international team of astronomers has published a detailed study of VT J1906+0849, a radio source discovered in the VLASS survey (Very Large Array Sky Survey) that doesn’t resemble anything else previously catalogued in the Milky Way. The paper, led by Jessie M. Miller of the California Institute of Technology, combines radio, infrared, optical, and […]

Miami’s fairy godmother for undocumented domestic workers

20 September 2026 at 05:00
Karla De Anda in Miami, Florida, on September 6.

It is around 9:00 p.m. and Karla De Anda’s phone rings. The number is unknown to her. On the other end, connected to the free Wi‑Fi at a Miami airport terminal, a woman is sobbing uncontrollably. Her name is Rosa. She has just had her bags packed for her. A coworker told the family they both worked for that Rosa had been secretly talking to a stranger about the wages she was owed. The family would not hear any more: they bought her a one‑way ticket to her country of origin and put her in a taxi to the airport. Karla, who barely knows her, asks a single question: “Do you want to stay or not? Just answer me.” Between sobs the woman says yes. She hangs up, gets out of the departure line, and an hour later Karla is waiting for her at the arrivals gate with another activist, ready to take her to her home that same night.

Why Doesn’t Gravity Explain Why You Can’t Be in Two Places at Once? A New Experiment Under 1,400 Meters of Rock Just Narrowed It Down

19 September 2026 at 08:28
Somewhere between an electron and a human being, the rules of physics change. Quantum mechanics allows an atom to exist in two states simultaneously — spinning left and right at the same time, for instance — which is impossible to picture at human scale. Nobody has ever seen a person, or even a speck of […]

The Day Julius Caesar Was Assassinated, Half the City Was Drunk Because It Was the Feast of an Obscure Roman Goddess: Who Was Anna Perenna?

18 September 2026 at 08:56
While Brutus and his allies were stabbing Julius Caesar to death, a good chunk of the Roman working class was having a picnic. They drank wine, pitched makeshift tents out of branches and cloth, and toasted to as many years of life as cups they could down. It was the feast of Anna Perenna, the […]

A 328-Foot Underground Aqueduct Discovered in the Sabine Hills Shows Rome Wasn’t the First to Master Water Engineering

17 September 2026 at 11:48
In the district of Monteleone Sabino, a town of under 1,300 people in Italy’s Rieti province, a team of cavers has made its way through a passage first cut into the mountainside more than two thousand years ago. On the other side, they documented a pre-Roman aqueduct, now walkable for roughly 100 meters (about 328 […]

Why Nothing in the Universe Can Reach -459°F or Absolute Zero — Not Even Empty Space

16 September 2026 at 08:48
There’s a temperature nothing in the universe has ever touched. It’s called absolute zero, equal to -273.15°C (-459.67°F), the point at which the particles that make up matter would lose all their kinetic energy and simply stop moving. In 1848, the British physicist William Thomson — better known as Lord Kelvin — proposed making that […]
