Shine With No Stars at All — The Milky Way Began as a Swarm of Thousands of Tiny Galaxies

3 October 2026 at 18:24
Long ago, the patch of sky that would become our galactic neighbourhood looked nothing like a galaxy. It was a collection of thousands of smaller galaxies. Some were turning out stars at a frantic pace, others held nothing but gas, and others were littered with dead stars and black holes. That is the picture drawn […]

Attempted hijacking of Tel Aviv-bound plane revives specter of threat dating back to the 1970s

30 September 2026 at 19:32

The foiled hijacking of a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv carrying 174 passengers — 166 of them Israelis — on Wednesday has revived the specter of earlier hijackings (mostly attempted) of aircraft bound for Israel, especially during the 1960s and 1970s.

A “Hell Pig” Predator Lived in Spain 36 Million Years After the Dinosaurs — It Was Kin to Hippos and Whales

30 September 2026 at 09:26
Around 30 million years ago, a heavily built animal prowled the area that is now Vallbona de les Monges, in Lleida province (Catalonia, northeastern Spain). It had a long head, prominent cheekbones and formidable jaws lined with large, sharp teeth. Paleontologists call it the hell pig. The nickname misleads. Its kinship with modern pigs is […]

Power outages, the economic crisis, and the blockade against María Corina Machado reignite social protests in Venezuela

29 September 2026 at 13:01

A military contingent blocked the bridge over Lake Maracaibo on Monday in the Venezuelan oil capital to prevent a workers’ protest from closing the road. In Guayana, in front of the state-run basic industries, workers erected a barricade to demand better wages. In Caracas, a group protested for the release of political prisoners after news emerged of a death in the women’s prison run by the National Institute for Women’s Guidance (INOF). Over the weekend people took to the streets to demand a date for elections and the return of opposition leader María Corina Machado. Almost every night during a sweltering September, in inland cities such as Maracay, Guanare, Barinas, Valencia, and Maracaibo, people have expressed on the streets their frustration over blackouts that are increasingly prolonged, lasting up to 10 or 12 hours a day.

How Greek Engineers Quarried an Entire Coastline to Build a Warship Harbor 2,600 Years Ago— Now Underwater in Libya

29 September 2026 at 12:17
Cyrene was one of the wealthiest Greek cities in the ancient Mediterranean, built on a plateau some 9 km (about 6 miles) inland from Libya’s northeastern coast, on what is now known as Jebel Akhdar. According to Herodotus, it was founded in 631 BCE by colonists from the Greek island of Thera — modern-day Santorini. […]

29 September 2026 at 10:56
