Quest for the Slappy Man-Hug

Since transitioning, Lane Michael Stanley has struggled with his interactions with straight men—especially the classic ‘man-hug’: brief, side-angled, all back slaps and no stomach touching. As he navigates this new territory, he reflects on his other relationships and forms of physical intimacy, examining his life and gender norms from both sides of his transition.

Straight men are generally more standoffish with me than I remember them being before. They make less eye contact, they touch less, they smile less. Do I not know how to read their friendship cues? Maybe straight men befriend other men differently from how they befriend women: no more touch of the arm that they swear is innocent, no more questions they feel entitled to ask or basic facts they appoint themselves to explain. Maybe I should learn to read a curt nod as a sign of camaraderie from men now, replacing whatever a straight man’s sly smile was supposed to convey before.

Or are they more standoffish because they can tell I’m gay? Maybe straight men want to keep me at a distance. Maybe there is a reality to the coldness I read from them, a hostility they throw my way unconsciously. Most of the gay men I know are friends with other gay men, so I’m not sure how gay/straight male friendships function, or if they really exist. My partner (a cis gay man) did have a close straight male friend, but they went barhopping and ended up trading blow jobs, so that doesn’t really count anymore.

New NHS England policy for trans people could have ‘a number of adverse impacts’, report finds

Exclusive: rules on same-sex wards could lead to delays in care, discrimination and animosity between groups, finds internal assessment

Trans people could face delays and a greater risk of “corridor care” under new NHS England guidance that means they will no longer be able to use same-sex wards, according to an internal report.

An NHS England impact assessment, seen by the Guardian, stated that trans people may also potentially experience discrimination and this could lead to them “avoiding accessing healthcare at all”.

Femicide, Sexual Abuse Cases Surge in Colombia

Colombia is facing growing social and humanitarian concern over an alarming increase in cases of sexual violence and femicide.

According to Legal Medicine data, sexual abuse of older adult women increased 31% during 2026. Examinations by that entity indicate these cases rose from 70 to 92 between January and July this year.

However, professionals consulted say these records correspond only to examinations of victims who reported some type of abuse. Because other cases are neither investigated nor reported, the real number of victims is believed to be much higher.

As of July 2026, official Colombian figures show 89 femicides and 16,451 sexual crimes, although there are significant discrepancies with social organizations, which report higher figures.

The Ombudsman’s Office reported the 89 completed cases, plus 74 attempts and 20 transfemicides, acknowledging 191 cases in 2025 compared with more than 600 reported by organizations. The Femicide Observatory documented 621 femicides in September 2025 before suspending its count due to lack of funds.

The Colombian Prosecutor’s Office reports 16,451 complaints of sexual crimes, most of them against girls and adolescents with 12,457 cases, followed by adult women with 3,583. It also records 166 cases of sexual exploitation of minors and 151 trafficking victims.

Between August and September 2026, the Prosecutor’s Office reported the prosecution of 275 people for sexual crimes against minors, of whom 258 received a precautionary measure of deprivation of liberty while the process continues, clarifying that this does not equal a conviction.
