Relatives of California welder accused of fuel theft in Mexico say they have gone weeks without news of him
Joel René Cárdenas Carrillo, a Mexican immigrant who became a U.S. citizen and works as a welder, has lived in the United States for more than 25 years. For his father’s birthday, he decided to return to his home state of Colima in Mexico after a long absence. On August 12, as he was preparing to return to California, he went for a walk on a hill and later attended a soccer match held on a field in Manzanillo. But when he left the game in his car, several police patrols blocked his way. Officers detained him, beat him and accused him of stealing fuel, an illegal activity in Mexico known as huachicol. That is the account provided by his wife, Verónica Sánchez.

The Mexican ‘superpeso’ is over: Currency’s losses deepen to 18 pesos per dollar, its weakest level since last March
The Mexican peso is enduring a “black Monday.” The currency’s losses against the dollar deepened and fell to 18 pesos at the beginning of the week, its weakest level since last March. The strength of the U.S. dollar, uncertainty over the conflict in the Middle East and rising global interest rates have hit the currency, which after reaching 18 pesos per dollar closed the session at 17.95 pesos per dollar, according to Bank of Mexico data, representing a 1.8% depreciation from the previous close. The peso’s performance has been undermined by monetary policy decisions from the central banks of Mexico and the U.S. The Federal Reserve raised its interest rate by 25 basis points, placing it in a range between 3.75% and 4%, its first increase since July 2023. That decision strengthened the dollar, while the Bank of Mexico kept its rate at 6.5%. The issue matters because a narrower gap between the two rates reduces the appeal of the carry trade, a strategy that involves borrowing in countries with very low interest rates to invest in countries where rates are higher and yields greater.

The founders of On, the phenomenon attracting Kylian Mbappé and Zendaya: ‘Cost is not a limiting factor; our followers are willing to pay’
You may have recently come across some of these athletic shoes with unsettling holes in the sole. If you noticed them, you might already have seen a lot of them. It’s not just your imagination: in a few short years, designs from the brand On have spread across the globe. Outside the sports world the label was little known before the pandemic, but it has since become a cultural phenomenon that goes beyond the world of running. The company’s latest headline-making move came last week, when it announced a deal with Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, who left Nike after 20 years of collaboration. On already works regularly with luxury house Loewe, superstar Zendaya, and former tennis world number one Roger Federer. The brand so appealed to Federer that he became one of its shareholders.

China, the white elephant in US–Mexico trade negotiations
Commercial integration between Mexico and the United States, under the protection of the USMCA trade agreement, will first have to navigate a complicated customs issue: China. On the eve of the fourth round of talks, scheduled in theory for October, the economic rules that the Mexican government will impose on Chinese goods, investment and technology are of particular interest to the White House.

Gael García Bernal: ‘The common good is no longer a political slogan. Democracy and the use of power are almost like a reality show’
There are film projects that do not arise from a rigid outline but from years of sediment and personal crossroads. For Gael García Bernal, 47, Hombre al agua, his latest feature which he co-wrote, directed and stars in, took more than 15 years to take its final shape, having been seeded at the exact moment he became a father.
