Vast Beatles museum, hailed as ‘extraordinary’ by Paul McCartney, to open in Liverpool in 2028

City’s Beatles Story museum to move to 100,000 sq ft new home and official ownership, along with Yellow Submarine makeover of Liverpool’s second-tallest building

Liverpool is to unveil a new 100,000 sq ft visitor attraction about the Beatles, in plans hailed as “extraordinary” by Paul McCartney, and by Andy Burnham as having “the kind of ambition I want to see more of across Britain”.

Opening in 2028, the project is a huge upgrade for the Beatles Story, a museum which opened in Liverpool’s Royal Albert Dock in 1990. Ownership will now pass to the Beatles company Apple Corps, making the Beatles Story the band’s first official fan experience in their home city.

Deep Purple: the final solo of an endless war

On August 12, 2026, a moment long thought lost to rock took place: Ritchie Blackmore returned to Deep Purple after 33 years away and decades of fights with his great adversary, the vocalist Ian Gillan. The reunion was brief—just six and a half minutes, the length of the performance of Smoke On the Water, featuring rock’s most famous guitar riff, written by Blackmore. It took place during Deep Purple’s 2026 tour stop in New York. “Historic reunion,” Rolling Stone headlined.

Brett Christophers, economic geographer: ‘In contemporary capitalism, the right to housing does not exist’

Economist Brett Christophers, an expert on investment funds and housing, in Barcelona.

Brett Christophers, 55, has spent years studying the strategies of large corporations. He began by examining big investment banks such as JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs. But he soon noticed those names being pushed aside on the agendas of politicians and influencers by investment firms like BlackRock and Blackstone. It was not sudden: for decades they had quietly gained ground, and now control almost every aspect of a citizen’s daily life — the home they live in, the water they wash with, the road or railway they use to get to work, or the hospital they visit for an emergency. That is what Christophers, an economic geographer at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research at Uppsala University (Sweden), has been documenting in multiple studies and, more recently, in books such as Our Lives in Their Portfolios: Why Asset Managers Own the World and Rentier Capitalism: Who Owns the Economy, and Who Pays for It?.
