21 October 2026 at 20:36

21 October 2026 at 10:53

Australian lawmaker has both legs amputated after car attack

21 October 2026 at 07:37

Australian lawmaker Helen Haines has had both legs amputated after being rammed by a car outside her electoral office, her husband said on Wednesday, as the man accused of the attack appeared in court.

Doctors amputated Haines’ left leg after the alleged attacker struck her twice with his car in Wangaratta, northeast of Melbourne, on Monday, Phil Haines said. They worked for days to save her right leg but were ultimately unsuccessful, he told a press conference in Melbourne.

“The good news in all this is Helen is alive and she’s stable. That is the most important thing for our family,” he said.

Brendan Nugent, a 43-year-old resident of the rural town of Tarrawingee within Haines’ electorate, was charged with three offences: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a public official.

Additional charges of cannabis cultivation and possession have also been laid against Nugent, court filings showed.

The suspect was restrained by members of the public at the scene before being arrested.

Haines, an independent lawmaker who has championed causes including climate change and regional housing, remains in critical condition.

Police are still investigating the motive for the rare attack on an elected official.

Suspect appears in court as police investigate motive

During a brief court appearance on Wednesday, the accused’s lawyer said his client suffers from a rare neurological condition called idiopathic transverse myelitis and was also being treated for concussion, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported. His lawyer told the magistrate his client had some mental health concerns and that it was his first time in custody.

There was no application for bail, and the case was deferred until February 4.

Police say alleged attack was targeted

Anti-terrorism police are among the agencies investigating the incident. While police allege the attack was “targeted,” they believe it was an isolated incident.

There was no intelligence to suggest any threat to Haines, and the Australian Federal Police received no warning of any imminent danger from the alleged attacker, Commissioner Krissy Barrett told reporters.

“What I can say is we didn’t have any specific intelligence that would have indicated something as atrocious as happened on Monday afternoon,” she said.

Victoria state police said they could not find any direct past contact between Haines and the accused, with the motive still unknown.

“Motivation is one of these things that we absolutely need to explore. His motivation for this, what we allege is a deliberate attack, is very much a centrepiece of the investigation,” Victoria Police Chief Mike Bush said.

Bush declined to comment on the man’s mental health, saying the matter was before the court.

Haines had worked in nursing, midwifery and academia before being elected to parliament in 2019 for the rural seat of Indi, which she retained in both 2022 and 2025.

Concerns grow over safety of Australian politicians

Violent attacks on politicians are rare in Australia, where federal lawmakers, state leaders and even prime ministers are often seen shopping, grabbing coffee or attending community events with relatively little security.

However, concerns about politicians’ safety have grown in recent years amid rising political polarisation, online abuse and threats against elected officials, prompting calls for greater protections while preserving the accessibility that has long characterised Australian politics.

Man in court over car attack that cost Australian MP her leg

A man who allegedly rammed his car into Australian lawmaker Helen Haines outside her electoral office appeared in court on Wednesday, as police sought to understand the motive for the rare attack on an elected official.

Growing concerns over politicians’ safety

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday described the attack as clearly a “violent incident,” having earlier linked it to a domestic climate of ugly, polarised political debate.

“It’s a reminder that the world is a more dangerous and divided place than it was a generation ago,” he told ABC Radio.

Violent attacks on politicians are rare in Australia, where federal lawmakers, state leaders and even prime ministers are often seen shopping, grabbing coffee or attending community events with relatively little security.

Australia’s largest datacentre operator NextDC’s shares dive as Melbourne expansion delayed

NextDC tells investors plans to double the size of its west Melbourne datacentre have hit obstacle after community objects to 22 metres-high power poles

Australia’s largest datacentre operator has been forced to delay the controversial expansion of its M3 site in Melbourne’s west amid a pause in construction of new 22m power poles following community protest.

On Wednesday, NextDC told the Australian Stock Exchange that delays to electricity provider Jemena’s upgrade of the power poles – essential to delivering the increased electricity required by the expanded West Footscray site – would mean the expansion would be pushed back to the 2027/2028 financial year.

Odds of fifth interest rate hike this year shorten as RBA deputy warns inflation outlook ‘worsening’

Andrew Hauser says central bank faces ‘hard choices’ as it looks to balance risks of entrenched inflation with desire to protect labour market

The chance of a fifth interest rate hike on Melbourne Cup day has jumped after Andrew Hauser, the Reserve Bank’s deputy governor, warned of “hard choices” amid a “materially worse” inflation outlook.

Hauser, speaking at an investment bank conference in Sydney on Wednesday morning, said the RBA monetary policy board members were juggling a slowing economy with fears that Australians were starting to lose faith in the central bank’s ability to bring inflation back to the 2.5% target.

Australian MP loses leg after being rammed twice in vehicle attack

20 October 2026 at 12:27

Doctors have amputated the leg of an Australian lawmaker after a man rammed her with his car and then reversed to hit her a second time, media and officials said on Tuesday, in an incident being investigated by anti-terrorism police.

Helen ‌Haines, an independent, underwent surgery overnight and remained in critical condition after Monday’s attack in the small rural town of Wangaratta, north of Melbourne.

Australian media, citing unidentified sources, said Haines had lost one leg as a result of her injuries and doctors were working to save the other.

“At this stage it appears this is an isolated incident, and there are currently no other known threats connected to this matter,” police in the southeastern state of Victoria said in a statement.

While the motive for the attack has yet to be revealed, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese linked it to a domestic climate of ugly, polarised political debate.

“It’s clear that there was a deliberate act here. This wasn’t an accident, someone just skidding off the road,” Albanese told ABC News.

Initial investigations suggested the car hit Haines as she was loading or unloading items from the trunk of her car, he said.

The 43-year-old alleged attacker was arrested at the scene and charged on Tuesday with the offences of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a public official.

Police, who are investigating the incident along with counter-terror authorities and the domestic intelligence agency, said in a statement they would allege the attack was targeted.

STRUCK TWO TIMES

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke told ABC Radio that witnesses said the alleged attacker reversed the vehicle and struck Haines a second time before a bystander intervened.

Ricky Jefferies ran from his barber shop, restraining the attacker and removing a knife from him after initially believing the incident was a car accident, Australian media reported.

“I heard a loud bang with no brakes. It was crazy, I just ran out to the front to see what’s happening,” Jefferies told reporters outside his shop.

“I didn’t realise the seriousness of the situation initially, and once it became relevant I just did what I could and what others were already trying to do.”

‘TURN TEMPERATURE DOWN’

Violent attacks on politicians are extremely rare in Australia, where federal lawmakers, state leaders and even prime ministers are regularly seen in supermarkets and coffee shops, attending community events and chatting with voters with minimal security.

Haines worked in nursing and midwifery and as an academic before being elected to parliament as an independent in 2019 in the seat of Indi. She retained the seat in 2022 and 2025.

Outside the hospital where Haines is being treated, Melbourne resident Shawn Hill said the attack showed “the political climate is becoming more and more polarising today.”

“No one deserves to be put at risk of anything, especially someone who is serving the people and trying to do what is best for the Australian community,” Hill told Reuters.

Albanese expressed concern about growing division, and urged Australians to engage more respectfully with one another. He also flagged a “significant increase” in threats to politicians in recent years.

“We all have a responsibility to turn the temperature down,” he added. “I really don’t want to see the character of Australia change.”
