Thursday news quiz: Liz is absurd, Apu finds words and a bloke steals a bird

Test yourself on topical news trivia, pop culture and general knowledge every Thursday. How will you fare?

The Thursday quiz is aware of standard international units of time, such as the Liz Truss (49 days) and the Scaramucci (11 days). Now a new unit of measurement has entered the chat: the Zacharia (five days). But whatever arbitrary length of time the world invents to measure chaos, political downfalls or social media meltdowns, the Thursday news quiz remains resolutely fixed. It is always seven days apart, unwavering, inescapable and ultimately reliable. Which means, once again, it is time for some questions on topical news, pop culture and general knowledge, with no prizes on offer except pride. Or shame. Allons-y!

Gabriel Luna teases 'shifting perspectives' in 'The Last of Us' season 3 as filming continues

A star of "The Last of Us" is shining a light on what's coming next.

The hit TV series based on the popular video game saga premiered in January 2023 with Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal leading the way.

Season one received critical acclaim and a significant following as viewers watched Ellie and Joel navigate a post-apocalyptic world.

It was a dark and gritty show that saw the protagonists battle the infected and humans.

"The Last of Us" star shares update on season three.

Unfortunately, season two had a noticeable decline in quality. Outside of maybe two episodes, it felt like the show had lost its edge.

The only reason to believe season three might be positive is that the season two finale indicated the show would focus heavily on Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) moving forward.

Now, star Gabriel Luna is pulling back the curtain on what fans can expect.

"This season has been very interesting in the way that a lot of different perspectives shift. Without saying too much, I think folks that were playing the game are aware of that aspect. I just can’t wait for people to see it. We’re shooting it now. I have a little bit of a break," Luna told Variety in a video shared Tuesday night.

You can watch his full comments below, and let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.

Here's the basic reality of the situation. "The Last of Us" will have a very small window of opportunity to convince fans to continue sticking around.

The Ellie storyline (Ramsey) got so cringe down the stretch. Abby, who killed Joel in season two, is a far more interesting character, and Kaitlyn Dever is simply a much more captivating actress. She's come a long way since season two of "Justified."

Fans are going to punch out quickly if season three doesn't go all in on Abby as the main focus. Not exactly inspired that's what will happen, judging from Luna's comments, but time will tell.

It's just a shame how far season two fell off compared to season one. Hopefully, it can be salvaged.

Netflix used to chat a lot about its plans for video games and podcasts. Not anymore.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos no longer has anything to say about the company's move into video games or podcasts.

Patrick T. Fallon / AFP via Getty Images

  • Netflix has been talking about its plans to build a video game business for years.
  • More recently, it has told investors it was also excited about its move into podcasts.
  • Now it has nothing to say about either category. Its silence may be telling.

For years, Netflix has been telling investors how excited it is about its move into video games.

More recently, it has also started talking up its move into podcasts.

But when the company released its third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, the streamer had nothing to say about either foray.

What does that mean? Netflix won't say. But I'm pretty comfortable coming up with my own conclusion: Netflix doesn't think games or podcasts are going to do much for its business, at least in the near future.

That also tracks with new reporting from The Wall Street Journal, which says that Netflix has recently "stopped pushing games and podcasts, focusing more on its core movie and TV offerings."

That's logical, given the most pressing problem the company has: figuring out how to make movies and TV shows that attract new subscribers, and that get its existing subscribers to spend more time on the service.

But it's also a real turnaround, at least in its messaging.

Netflix has consistently talked up games since it launched that business in 2021. In 2022, cofounder Reed Hastings predicted that Netflix would eventually "be a big leader in games." And the company has frequently pointed out its ambitions in its quarterly updates to investors.

Last quarter, for instance, the company highlighted a new World Cup game, and an app for kids games, and said it had "increasing confidence that we are building a foundation with exciting future growth potential."

It has also spent the last two quarters talking up its move into podcasts. In April, it said podcasts were a "potential incremental engagement opportunity." Three months later, it told investors that podcasts were good because they gave viewers more reasons to watch the service during the day (as opposed to the evening, where half of its viewing happens) and on mobile phones.

But on Tuesday, it had nothing to say about either category, other than a single legalese mention about forward-looking statements. But it did make a reference to other people's video games: It said a 27-minute trailer for Take-Two's highly anticipated "Grand Theft Auto VI," which it showed exclusively for a six-hour window, had been a hit.

Both games and podcasts make a certain kind of sense for Netflix, in theory: The company has often talked about the fact that gaming is a big competitor for its viewers' time. So why not try to harvest some of that attention for itself? And video podcasts are really just another term for "talk shows on a budget" — so why not offer those up to viewers as well?

The flip side: It's been hard to understand how Netflix would be able to create games that are better or more popular than everyone else in the game business. And it's an open question whether viewers who turn to Netflix in search of distracting entertainment would be interested in low-fi chats.

Maybe both categories eventually turn into something meaningful for Netflix one day. But the company seems to be saying that won't happen anytime soon.

'Grand Theft Auto VI' release set to cost US economy staggering amount as gamers plan PTO days

The "Grand Theft Auto VI" saga has taken a ton of twists and turns in the past year.

From delays to leaks and even the "digital release" controversy, GTA VI has been in the news cycle for so long that it's hard to believe this will all be coming to an end next month.

On November 19, the world will finally get to experience a video game that has been over a decade in the making.

UNKNOWN HACKER ALLEGEDLY LEAKS SEVERAL MINUTES OF GRAND THEFT AUTO VI GAMEPLAY AHEAD OF NETFLIX REVEAL

In what could be one of the most anticipated video games of all-time, "Grand Theft Auto VI's" release date will likely be a seismic event in terms of the national economy.

That's not me being hyperbolic, either, as experts are predicting the economy of the United States to take a $1 billion hit the day GTA drops.

It turns out so many people have already lined up their sick days for November 19 and 20 that it's making national news.

Sorry for anyone doing so that I just outed with this article, but that is insane.

I can't remember a game causing this much of a stir.

Even hotly anticipated releases like "Halo" and "Call of Duty" weren't decimating the workforce the way GTA is doing.

And remember, we are still a month away from the game actually coming out.

This is just the fallout from the planners getting their ducks in a row. Can you imagine how many people will call in sick the day of the release?

MIAMI HEAT TEASE RELEASE OF NEW 'VICE CITY' JERSEYS ON THE NIGHT BEFORE 'GRAND THEFT AUTO VI' RELEASE

"Grand Theft Auto VI" is generating so much excitement that the franchise's developers, Rockstar, are turning the city of Miami into a giant billboard for the game.

For those who don't know, GTA VI is set in the fictional Vice City, which is a parody of real-life South Florida.

Whether the game is good or not remains to be seen, and the long wait could always create a case of Rockstar never being able to live up to the lofty expectations they created with the development time.

One thing is for sure, though, for about 24 hours in late November, the world will come to a screeching halt thanks to a video game.

If you have friends or loved ones who are even remotely interested in gaming, don't expect to hear from them during this time period.

A Decathlon é a parceira desportiva oficial.

ANT GAMES 2026

Meanwhile, Colombia showed its dominance in speed skating, amassing 35 medals in this discipline, including 17 gold. Therefore, they solidified a hegemony that has allowed them to win 23 world titles.

Russian Competitors’ Absences To Influence the 2026 World Gymnastics Championship

The World Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam begin with the absence of Russia’s Angelina Melnikova—who was denied an entry visa by Dutch authorities—at a time when the first qualification spots for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are up for grabs.

RELATED:

Angelina Melnikova to Lead Russia at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships

The absence of Melnikova, the reigning world and European champion, will significantly impact the course of the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Rotterdam, which begin this Saturday in the Netherlands. The competition will award direct Olympic qualification spots to the three countries that reach the podium in the team event, in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Russia’s participation will be severely limited; in addition to Melnikova, the team will be without Anna Kalmykova—the all-around runner-up at the most recent European Championships—and Viktoria Listunova, a member of the gold-medal-winning team at the Tokyo Olympics. All three gymnasts were denied entry visas.

The Russian Gymnastics Federation described the decision as discriminatory and a violation of the principles of equality that should govern any sporting competition. Meanwhile, the Russian ambassador to the Netherlands accused Dutch authorities of deliberately denying the visas to weaken the Russian team.

The Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport rejected these accusations, stating that athletic performance plays no role whatsoever in the evaluation of visa applications, which are governed by the European Union’s Visa Code.

At the same time, attention will also be focused on the return of Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, a four-time medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This will be the gymnast’s first major international competition since stepping away from the sport over the past year to recover—both physically and mentally—from the previous Olympic cycle.

Her return will be gradual: Andrade plans to compete, at least initially, on the balance beam and vault. The Brazilian—a silver medalist in the all-around at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games—leads the Brazilian team alongside Flavia Saraiva; the squad earned a bronze medal in the team event in Paris.

The absence of Melnikova and American Simone Biles—the most decorated gymnast in history, who has not competed since the Paris Games—positions Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour as the top contender for the all-around title.

Nineteen-year-old Nemour won the Mediterranean Games this summer with a total score of 57.750, the highest mark recorded by any gymnast this season. However, she will face stiff competition from 16-year-old Qinqin Ke of China, the reigning Asian champion, and 18-year-old American Hezly Rivera, who will be making her World Championship debut.

In the men’s competition, Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto will aim for his fourth consecutive world all-around title. Should he succeed, the 25-year-old gymnast will move closer to the record held by his compatriot Kohei Uchimura, who won six consecutive gold medals between 2009 and 2015.

His primary rival may well be his teammate Shinnosuke Oka, the reigning Olympic champion. Also in the mix is Croatia’s Illia Kovtun, the current European champion and a world medalist in 2021 and 2023. China’s Boheng Zhang—an Olympic and world silver medalist—will not participate due to a last-minute injury.

Japan enters as the favorite for the men’s team gold, led by Hashimoto and Oka, though they will face a strong challenge from the Chinese squad. The United States and Great Britain—the latter having won the European title in Zagreb—emerge as the top contenders for the third spot and Olympic qualification.

In the women’s division, a revamped United States team will aim to secure its eighth consecutive world team title. Italy—an Olympic silver medalist in Paris—and Brazil, which took bronze at the same event, will be their main rivals

From Lara Croft to Lucía Caminos: Why does a female lead in a video game still provoke backlash?

The trailer for GTA VI, the latest installment in the acclaimed Grand Theft Auto video game series, introduces Lucía Caminos, a Latina woman, as one of the protagonists alongside her partner, Jason Duval. Criticism from some fans of the franchise quickly surfaced online. Beyond comments about Caminos’s appearance, some users have labelled her “too dominant” because of her personality and questioned her weapons skills, which they deem “unrealistic for a woman,” even comparing them to those of a U.S. Marine.
