TikTok to Pay DOJ $400M Settlement Over Alleged Child Privacy Violations

22 August 2026 at 13:01

The Department of Justice (DOJ) reached a $400 million settlement with TikTok on Friday.

The Details: The settlement, involving TikTok, its parent company ByteDance, and the companies' affiliates, "resolv[es] litigation concerning compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and its implementing regulations (COPPA)," according to the DOJ's press release. It marks the end of a 2024 lawsuit initially filed by the Biden administration and is reportedly "one of the largest recoveries ever obtained in a COPPA case."

Assistant Attorney Gen. Brett A. Shumate said the settlement "secures a significant monetary recovery and reflects the Department's commitment to ensuring children receive the full protections that Congress mandated."

The department reported, "Under the settlement, TikTok will pay $300 million immediately and an additional $100 million upon entry of an order vacating a prior consent decree entered against TikTok's predecessor, Musical.ly."

The Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) prior consent decree against Musical.ly suggested the company collected minors' personal information without parental consent, resulting in a $5.7 million fine. The TikTok litigation similarly involved allegations of COPPA violations by circumventing parental consent to collect personal information from users under 13 years old.

The department specified in its statement, "The claims resolved by the United States in the settlements are allegations only, and there has been no determination of liability."

How The Media Covered It: Initial coverage of this story was largely similar across the political spectrum, and outlets on both the left and right republished Reuters' (Center bias) report. The Verge (Lean Left), Reuters, and Fox Business (Lean Right) all noted that TikTok did not immediately respond to their requests for comment. However, Fox was the only outlet of the three to highlight that the Biden administration spearheaded the lawsuit – a fact omitted in the DOJ's press release.

For Context: The DOJ's release stated, "Since the Justice Department filed its complaint in 2024, TikTok has undergone significant changes to its ownership, management, compliance functions, and privacy practices. The company has implemented extensive measures designed to strengthen safeguards for younger users, improve age-related controls, and enhance parental oversight."

The US and ByteDance announced a joint-venture deal on TikTok in January, granting the US majority ownership of the platform in compliance with President Donald Trump's executive order from September. Read more about the deal here.

Switzerland: 80.5% of North African asylum seekers have been accused of one or more crimes

By: admin
21 August 2026 at 13:10

Around 80.5 percent of asylum seekers from North African countries were accused of one or more offenses in Switzerland, underlining the massive amount of criminality present in this foreign population. The data comes from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

For asylum seekers as a whole, the rate of criminality is much lower, with only 12.5 percent having been accused of one or more offenses. Nationals from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia are therefore extremely overrepresented compared to other asylum seeker groups.

North Africans also have little chance of having their asylum applications accepted by Swiss authorities, with 99 percent of all applications rejected, according to Swiss newspaper Blick.

In 2024, a “24-hour” rule was introduced for accelerated asylum procedures for North African countries, which enables Swiss authorities to process asylum claims with a low chance of success more quickly. Applicants can still appeal the decisions, which can significantly increase delay in reaching a final decision.

“Criminals must leave Switzerland quickly. This is a priority of the asylum strategy,” said SEM spokesperson Daniel Bach.

However, the process is often delayed by the actions of asylum seekers, including refusing to provide fingerprints and failing to show up for deportation appointments.

Many applicants also obstruct the accelerated procedure: they refuse to provide their fingerprints, do not show up for appointments or quickly leave Switzerland. In these cases, their request can be filed without formalities.

Authorities are now working to implement new measures to quickly deport asylum seekers, including the “systematic use of coercive measures against the perpetrators of repeated offenses.” Authorities are also planning to introduce stricter rules for administrative detention.

The SEM also wants to increase cooperation with North African countries and recently signed an agreement with Morocco to accelerate the of asylum seekers ordered to be deported and help facilitate their return.

Missouri Court Strikes Down Effort to Bring GOP-Favoring Election Map to Voter Referendum

21 August 2026 at 13:02

A Missouri judge ruled Wednesday that the state's referendum process can't be used to block legislature-drawn congressional maps, allowing a recently implemented map that is expected to favor Republicans to remain active for the November midterm elections.

The Details: Cole County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Green ruled that the referendum provisions in Missouri's constitution don't apply to congressional redistricting. The ruling struck down a suit from The People Not Politicians (PNP) coalition. The case involving referendum use can now move to the state's Supreme Court.

For Context: The maps were already used in primary elections earlier in August. Then, Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins rejected a citizens' petition that sought to bring the maps to referendum and reportedly had over 300,000 signatures. In May, the Missouri Supreme Court upheld the new map and rejected an argument that said submitting referendum petitions should automatically suspend the new map. Missouri's redistricting is part of a broader wave of recent redistricting efforts by both Democrats and Republicans.

Key Quotes: Green wrote in the ruling, "The Missouri Constitution does not supply any statement – let alone a clear one – reallocating authority over congressional redistricting away from the General Assembly to a referendum process." PNP Executive Director Richard von Glahn said, "The most important thing that happened today is that there was a ruling. The state has tried to slow down the judicial process for months and now that we are out of Cole County, the real decision will be made. Our case now moves forward."

How The Media Covered It: Outlets across the spectrum framed the new map as favoring the GOP, but outlets from the right explicitly wrote in headlines or opening lines that the new development is a "win" or "victory" for Trump and Republicans. Outlets from the left and center more often framed the map as "backed" by or "favoring" Republicans.

Competing Claims Emerge on Who Controls Strait of Hormuz As Trump Launches 'Economic D-Day'

21 August 2026 at 13:02

President Donald Trump announced "Economic D-Day" against Iran and its allies Wednesday as many debate who controls the Strait of Hormuz.

Evidence Is Clear: CNN Business (Lean Left bias) opinion writer David Goldman said the "focal point of the Iran war" is "the battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz." The article explained that the "competing rhetoric" between Iran and the US has "caused considerable confusion and doubt." However, according to Goldman, "the evidence is clear" showing that "The United States, patrolling the strait with its navy, is gaining ground—and Iran is losing much of its control of the critical waterway." Goldman, as evidence cited Kpler, a service tracking ships via both transponder and satellites, saying that "more than 80% of liquids transits" through the strait over the last two weeks have utilized the Omani route or have been "dark" transits, meaning they turned off their transponders. Head of crude oil analysis at Kpler said "It increasingly looks like Iran has at least partially lost control of the strait." Goldman mentioned Trump saying that the US has "total control over the strait," and asserted that while this is not true, Iran also does not have total control.

'In Price, Is Knowledge': Bloomberg (Center) opinion writer Javier Blas approached the question of control through the lens of oil prices. Referencing an old market saying, "In price, is knowledge," Blas asserted that "At less than $90 a barrel, it isn't screaming shortage." Blas said that while the release of "strategic reserves is helping," as well as China slashing its oil imports, "that's not the full story." The "market skepticism about [US Energy Secretary Chris] Wright's optimism" over the amount of oil flowing through the strait "is understandable" according to Blas, however, "the naysayers are a bit too sure of themselves." Blas said that with "available data, we can safely say that, at the very least, 5 million barrels a day are transiting Hormuz," which contradicts the figures given by Wright. However, when the emphasis, according to Blas is on "available" data which he explained is quite limited due to the ongoing conflict, we may be missing much of what is really happening, positing that oil is flowing through the strait "perhaps more successfully than we think."

3-Month Low:  CNBC (Lean Left) framed coverage around statements from an Iranian government and military backed agency known as the Persian Gulf Strait Authority saying that "Hormuz remains blocked." The article also cited Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi saying the US "has long miscalculated due to intelligence failures," adding "Case in point: The war on Iran. Now, an even bigger miscalculation on the Strait of Hormuz." CNBC said that "While both sides continue to make contradictory claims," data from Kpler shows ship traffic through the waterway at a "3-month low."

'Notable Success': Outlets like Axios (Lean Left) and The New York Post (Right) highlighted a "stealth operation" from the US that is reportedly guiding millions of barrels of oil daily through the strait near the Omani coast. The Post mentioned that the operation does not come without costs, explaining that the US is "forced to deploy ships, helicopters and planes to intercept attacks from Iran," further explaining that "intercepting the strikes is notably higher than what it costs Iran to attack using its cheaper suicide drones." Axios called the operation "a notable success even as the broader war remains at a stalemate."

Unauthorized Migrant Murders VA Woman, Outlets Split on Significance of Immigration Status

21 August 2026 at 13:02

Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, 19, was arrested in connection with the murder of a 42-year-old woman in Fairfax, Virginia. Media outlets on the right emphasized that Cedillos-Campos was an unauthorized immigrant, while outlets on the left tended to downplay it as a factor in the murder.

The Details: Carmen Lizet Puch was found dead on Monday with several stab wounds and "doused in gasoline." Puch and Cedillos-Campos were coworkers at a restaurant and had an "intimate relationship," according to several media reports. Video footage allegedly showed Cedillos-Campos grabbing a knife, black latex gloves and a water bottle before going to meet Puch at a remote area where the two "intended" to convene.

For Context: According to the Department of Homeland Security, Cedillos-Campos was arrested by Customs and Border Protection in 2024 after illegally crossing a border near El Paso, Texas.

How the Media Covered It: The story was covered mostly by local news outlets which emphasized both the nature of Cedillos-Campos' relationship with Puch and his immigration status.

Previous Immigration Policy: Fox News (Right) and The New York Post (Right) framed the murder as a consequence of Cedillos-Campos's being in the US illegally under the Biden administration's immigration policy. In its headlines and reporting, Fox described Puch as a mother first compared to some other outlets who referred to her as Cedillos-Campos' coworker on first reference.

Fear Campaign: CNN (Lean Left) reported that the case has brought "renewed scrutiny" to the US's immigration policies, and it emphasized that researchers have found "no connection between immigration and crime." The outlet noted other recent instances of crime committed by unauthorized immigrants and said the Trump administration is carrying out a "yearslong campaign to use certain killings as apparent evidence for stricter border enforcement." ABC News (Lean Left) didn't mention Cedillos-Campos' immigration status until the last sentence of its article.

US National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion, Renewing Debate Over Fiscal Outlook

21 August 2026 at 13:02

US national debt surpassed $40 trillion on Tuesday amid federal budget deficits and decades of borrowing.

Shaky Fiscal Foundation: Alan Rappeport, writing for The New York Times Opinion (Left bias) highlighted President Donald Trump's promises to restore fiscal order, saying that "many of his policies have only exacerbated America's financial woes." However, the article also said that it is debatable "whether the mounting debt load is a problem to be solved or a function of America's economic strength." According to Rappeport, "deficits are also a point of political gamesmanship," asserting that "Republicans [are] most passionate about eliminating them when they are out of power." Regardless, Rappeport explained that "both Republicans and Democrats are responsible for America's borrowing burden," adding that the $40 trillion mark is "an ominous milestone for an economy that sits on a shaky fiscal foundation."

'Many Available Solutions': Outlets on the right like Fox Business (Lean Right) were more likely to highlight "surging interest costs" and "growth in federal spending on Social Security and Medicare amid the aging of the U.S. population" as reasons behind the rapidly growing debt. The article cited CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation Michael A. Peterson who said "For the millions concerned about affordability, let's start by asking Washington to take notice that the national debt just hit $40 trillion," and "we must change course." Peterson added, however, that "the only good thing about our fiscal challenge is that there are many available solutions, and the budget is entirely within our control." Peterson also noted that US adversaries "like China, Russia and Iran likely enjoy seeing the country devalue its economic future."

RELATED: National Debt Surpasses GDP for the First Time Since World War II | AllSides

Unsustainable Fiscal Trajectory: The Wall Street Journal (Center) said in an analysis that the $40 trillion "threshold carries symbolic weight, but isn't, by itself, economically significant." The article explained that "most investors and economists care less about raw figures than other measures, like the ratio of debt to gross domestic product, which provides a better sense of an economy's borrowing capacity." The focus of economists, according to the article, is on debt held by the public, which was $32.266 trillion on Tuesday. However, "$40 trillion is a big number," and according to The Journal is "likely to at least briefly draw attention to what economists broadly agree is an unsustainable fiscal trajectory."

“A manufactured conspiracy”: Minnesota’s labor movement denounces federal surveillance operation

This story originally appeared in Workday Magazine on Aug. 21, 2026. It is shared here with permission.

On Tuesday morning, a coalition of leaders and members from labor, community, and faith organizations in Minnesota denounced Operation Puppet Master, an alleged campaign by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to spy on Minnesotans during Operation Metro Surge earlier this year. In a press conference held outside of Target’s headquarters in downtown Minneapolis, the coalition urged Minnesotans to continue standing in solidarity with one another, and demanded companies headquartered in the state sign the business for democracy pledge.

The call comes after the New York Times published a report on August 13 about the campaign by DHS. Details were made public in a motion for discovery filed by Kevin Riach, an attorney for healthcare worker Isaac Sant. According to the motion, federal agents “surreptitiously recorded dozens of conversations with ordinary people who were simply exercising their First Amendment right to protest ICE’s lawless rampage in our state. The agents gathered information about Minnesotans from law enforcement databases and internet searches, and created dossiers that are apparently now available agency-wide.”

The documents describe surveillance and infiltration of union and community meetings during and before Operation Metro Surge. Eighteen organizations, including labor unions, were listed in a chart connecting them to Direct Action Minnesota (DAMN), a group of individuals who resisted what coalition members call a “terror campaign” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during Operation Metro Surge. Sant is one of 15 individuals who were indicted and charged by the federal government for conspiracy in what organizers have called an act of political repression and retaliation. More than half of the 15 are rank-and-file union members, and now the federal government is claiming labor organizations to be part of the alleged conspiracy. The motion continues: “With no evidence, the government alleged to the grand jury that this conspiracy in this case extends far beyond the defendants to include the AFL-CIO, the Minneapolis Federation of Educators, the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees, Monarca, Veterans for Peace, and the Grease Pit bicycle repair shop, among others.”

In addition to the AFL-CIO, Minneapolis Federation of Educators (MFE) Local 59, and Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE), SEIU Local 26 is also named by DHS along with the Workers Solidarity Circle and Black Cat Workers Collective. The motion also states that Homeland Security Investigations subpoenaed financial records for several labor unions, including SEIU locals in Minnesota and the Communication Workers of America (CWA).

Alec Stewart is a MAPE union member and one of the Minnesota 15. “The revelation of Operation Puppet Master exposes that while the government was targeting immigrant communities, tearing families apart, abducting children and murdering folks in the street, they were also attempting to disrupt and dismantle one of the facets of Minnesota that makes us so unique, and that is our strong and unified labor movement,” he said at the press conference.

Treasure Thoreson is a teacher, executive board member at MFE Local 59, and one of the Minnesota 15. Thoreson spoke at the press conference about the food drives, fundraisers, grocery deliveries, and support that educators gave to their community all while continuing to show up to schools to educate students. “The government feels so threatened by our ability to come together and use our protected First Amendment rights, our legal rights as unionists that they feel they must surveil and disrupt. However, that to me is a signal that what we are doing is effective, impactful, and powerful,” she said. According to Thoreson, a GoFundMe that she donated to was flagged by DHS as evidence that she is part of a conspiracy.

Gabriel Van de Water is a community organizer and artist who is one of the Minnesota 15. Van de Water referred to a report by Human Rights Watch detailing the human rights abuses that happened under Operation Metro Surge. “Human Rights Watch referred to the occupation as a manufactured crisis. This administration has chosen to follow up that crisis with a manufactured conspiracy,” said Van de Water. “The Minnesota 15 case and others like it must be understood as an attempt to criminalize dissent, to make an example out of some of us so that all of us hesitate to exercise our rights to protect one another. We will not allow this to happen.”

Kieran Knutson is president of CWA Local 7250, which was also named in the document. “We are more determined than ever to stand up to our repressive government. We are more determined than ever to stand in solidarity with working class people,” he said. “The Minnesota 15 are some of the finest people I know. These are our people, we have their backs. We know that this prosecution against them is a bogus attack on the entire movement.”

Emilia Gonzalez Avalos, the executive director of Unidos MN, a grassroots social justice organization, spoke about the surveillance and infiltration enacted by the federal government on community members and noted the silence of corporations like Target. “They sat in our libraries, in training rooms, and wrote down what we thought about the Constitution. They took down license plates outside a church in Roseville, and built files of the families inside, their addresses, children, and where they work. Federal agents walked into a Target store in Richfield and detained two citizens who were at work,” said Gonzalez Avalos. “To this day, Target has said nothing about it. We came here today because that silence still has answers available.”

Target has been the center of national boycott campaigns for rolling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments, and now this Minnesota coalition is demanding that the corporation meet with coalition members before early voting begins on September 15. Best Buy, 3M, and Cargill were also named by the coalition as corporations that are being urged to sign the pledge.

There is also a labor-endorsed call to boycott Target during the back-to-school season. President of MFE Local 59 Marcia Howard highlighted this call by the American Federation of Teachers that was supported by the national AFL-CIO, which passed a resolution supporting the boycott at its constitutional convention held in Minneapolis in June.

“Educators spend eight billion dollars on back to school supplies,” said Howard. “Between AFT calling for a boycott and AFL-CIO extending that boycott, the only thing that this corporation needs to do is make good. Make good for Alex Pretti, for Renee Good. For all of us who have been in the streets, for our students, for each other.”

Target made $5.1 billion in profits in 2025, and its chair and former CEO Brian Cornell pulled in over $21 million.

Minnesota AFL-CIO president Bernie Burnham speaks in front of Target’s headquarters in downtown Minneapolis. The AFL-CIO was one of the organizations listed by DHS. Photo by Amie Stager.

Bernie Burnham, the president of the Minnesota AFL-CIO, which represents 1000 local unions and hundreds of thousands of workers in the state, said at the press conference that “attacks on labor are not new. Those with power always push back when they face the kind of solidarity we saw in Minnesota last winter.” Burnham continued, “Instead of holding federal agents accountable for shooting and killing Renee Good and our [American Federation of Government Employees] union brother Alex Pretti, or addressing the dangerous and deadly conditions within immigration and detention facilities, the Trump administration continues to weaponize our federal government to intimidate our unions, our communities, and anyone who peacefully opposes their radically authoritarian agenda.”

Coalition members say they remain unintimidated. “Countless Minnesotans rose to the occasion and stood strong in the face of what the Trump administration tried to do to our communities and the whole nation owes those Minnesotans a debt of gratitude,” said Phillip Cryan, the executive vice president of SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa. “We keep us safe. If they come after any of us, 15 of us, or 1500 of us, the hundreds of thousands of us who did what we needed to do this winter to protect our communities, will be there to support them.”

“Are You Alive?” Talking Plants, Purchased Papers, and Repression: What Is Happening to Serbian Science

By: ak
15 July 2026 at 10:42

In recent years, Serbia has appeared more and more often in news stories about violations of research ethics: plagiarism in the dissertations of high-ranking officials, purchased authorship, mass retractions of publications, dubious international collaborations, and studies verging on scientific curiosities. And also — mass political persecution of scholars and university teachers. Are these episodes accidental, or are they manifestations of one and the same problem? Plagiat-Navigator tried to make sense of the situation.

Any account of the current situation with academic misconduct in Serbia has to begin with the story of the doctoral dissertation of Sinisa Mali, then the mayor of Belgrade and now the country’s first deputy prime minister. After “terrible plagiarism” was found in his work, the familiar bureaucratic game began: academic bodies dragged out a decision for years. But in the end, under public pressure and in the face of irrefutable evidence, the ethics committee of the University of Belgrade did annul his doctoral degree. By that time, Mali had already become finance minister. Soon afterward, Serbia’s Constitutional Court overturned the university’s decision. Apparently having lost faith in his own country’s academic system, Mali — by then Serbia’s first deputy prime minister — went to defend a new dissertation… in Slovakia. The Serbian authorities immediately recognized the Slovak diploma. The saga has been going on for more than a decade, and it is not over yet. But it has already become a textbook example of how political weight can cast doubt on the very idea of academic integrity.

Sinisa Mali. Photo: Vreme

Not all stories about plagiarism in the work of Serbian officials end well. Filip Svarm, editor-in-chief of the weekly Vreme, and journalist Nemanja Rujevic, who published the investigation “Anatomy of a Dissertation,” were less fortunate. Former politician Jelena Trivan, now CEO of Serbia’s largest mobile operator and the subject of that investigation, sued the journalists at the end of 2024 and won 80,000 dinars for an infringement of her honor, dignity, and business reputation. At the same time, the court did not question the fact of the borrowings themselves. It concluded, however, that only specialists have the right to classify a scholarly work as plagiarism, while journalists do not have such authority.

University of Belgrade professor Aleksandar Kavcic called what was happening “a war of laypeople against scientists”: a country where ignorance is celebrated and ministers are people who “like to wave around purchased and plagiarized diplomas.”

Plagiarism in Serbia’s academic environment is not limited to politicians’ dissertations. The buying and selling of scientific publications is an even more acute problem. This may be why Professor Kavcic, speaking of colleagues in the field, diplomatically noted that the difference between a real scientist and someone who has acquired knowledge “third hand” is enormous.

Plagiat-Navigator has already written about such “third hands” — the Moscow exchange trading in scientific publications and authorship slots — in the article “Hirsch Index at Market Rate.” One of the figures in that story was Marko Milojevic, a professor at Singidunum University in Belgrade. The case concerned two publications in international scientific journals in which Milojevic purchased authorship in 2021 through the Moscow exchange. A closer analysis shows that, in at least six publications, Professor Milojevic shares authorship with Russian colleagues who regularly use the services of the Moscow firm.

Yet the Moscow trail is only the tip of the iceberg. Following a global trend, Serbian scholars have recently shifted from the Russian market to the more powerful and influential Asian markets for fake publications. In a recent study of retracted papers with Iranian affiliations in computer science, the authors concluded that Serbia ranks among the leaders in the number of jointly published questionable papers, second only to Malaysia. This is hardly surprising: the “paper mill” from the Iranian city of Ardabil, exposed in 2023, also worked actively with Serbian colleagues. The result was the mass retraction of 31 papers in Genetika, the official journal of the Serbian Genetics Society, which lost its impact factor because of “compromised” peer review and citation manipulation.

Manipulation of peer review, authorship, and citation in publications by Serbian scholars has been observed not only in Genetika. Several examples of such papers, retracted from various journals for this reason, are shown below. It should be noted that Russian scientists also appeared as co-authors alongside their Serbian colleagues in these papers.

The compromising of publication procedures is only one item in a long list of dishonest practices used to pull the wool over the eyes of journal reviewers and editors.

Consider another characteristic example: in 2024, experts found numerous distortions of established scientific expressions — so-called tortured phrases — in a paper by Professor Nebojsa Bacanin, vice-rector for research at Belgrade’s Singidunum University. This is a clear sign that the authors were trying to evade plagiarism-detection systems using automated paraphrasing. But, as often happens, the software malfunctioned: it paraphrased the text while leaving abbreviations unchanged, so that they no longer matched their expansions. For example, instead of convolutional neural network (CNN), the text produced the meaningless phrase convolutional brain organization (CNN). Such blunders are the calling card of texts written not by scientists but by algorithms. Incidentally, another paper by Vice-Rector Bacanin was found to contain numerous manipulations with irrelevant bibliographic references.

The main news about the lives of scholars during the war, videos, and infographics are available on T-invariant’s Telegram channel. Subscribe so you don’t miss anything.

The problem, however, is not only how the articles are written, but also how their number is artificially inflated. The inflation of publication activity in Serbian science does not do without a zoo — and what follows is not a figure of speech. The use of metaheuristics inspired by animal behavior is a frequently used method for artificially increasing the number of publications. Many such algorithms are described extremely superficially, while their novelty and applicability to a wide range of tasks raise serious doubts. In most cases, the proposed method differs little from long-known algorithms, and its supposed originality comes down to a new metaphor and fresh terminology. A significant share of such works are merely minor modifications of the well-known Particle Swarm Optimization method.

A telling example: in a 2026 paper by scientists from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Serbia, the authors took an interest in the behavior of the spider-tailed horned viper and applied this metaphor to photovoltaic water-pumping systems. It sounds like science fiction, but it is a real publication in a scientific journal. Notably, among the co-authors of the paper we once again find the already familiar Professor Bacanin, vice-rector of Singidunum University.

Nor is the story free of image manipulation. In a joint Iranian-Italian article whose authors include a single representative of Serbia — University of Belgrade professor Jelena Popovic-Djordjevic — experts found telltale traces of Photoshop, the same techniques that have surfaced more than once in similar scandals.

Jelena Popovic-Djordjevic. Photo: ResearchGate

It is worth noting that since 2020 Popovic-Djordjevic has been a constant co-author of Sina Moghaddam, an Iranian specialist in medicinal plants. The scheme is transparent: the participation of European scientists helps Asian authors break into prestigious journals. At the same time, the real contribution of the Western colleagues to the research is often minimal. Their role is reduced to status presence — a kind of “wedding general” at an academic wedding. Until 2020, this honorary function in Moghaddam’s publications was performed by a researcher from Greece. The outcome was entirely predictable: nine of their joint papers have already been retracted, and they have received scathing criticism on Retraction Watch. Now the baton has passed to Popovic-Djordjevic.

It should be added that image manipulation in her papers is not only an Iranian specialty. In a paper signed by ten employees of the University of Belgrade, a curious fact emerged: an image previously used to illustrate liver samples migrated unchanged into a new article — this time as an illustration of kidney samples. The authors were not at a loss: they apologized for an “unfortunate error” and corrected the article.

[[socialnetworks]]

The roots of this tradition of errors, however, run deeper. Back in 2003, one of the co-authors of the aforementioned paper about the liver — now a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Belgrade, and then a researcher at Queen Mary University of London — Zoran Todorovic, together with his British colleague Christoph Thiemermann, published a paper in which experts also found image manipulation, again involving liver samples. In response to puzzled questions from reviewers, Professor Thiemermann replied with lethal directness: the results of the study, by his own admission, “may not be reliable.” Since then, more than 80 negative PubPeer comments have accumulated on his papers, 15 of which have ultimately been retracted. Techniques honed at a British university, it seems, proved useful in Belgrade twenty years later.

One reliable sign of dishonest publication activity is a sharp rise in the number of papers co-authored with representatives of countries in the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia, around 2021–2022. In such papers, authorship is often shared by researchers from a good dozen countries — a kind of academic international, assembled by chance around a single publication.

The graph above shows the distribution of the number of papers by Serbian authors co-authored with colleagues from Asia and Africa, depending on the number of co-authoring countries. By a large margin, the leaders in the number of papers are two mathematicians from the University of Belgrade: Professors Dragan Pamucar and Vladimir Simic. The sharp surge in their publication activity falls precisely at the beginning of the 2020s. And if experts find elementary mathematical errors in their papers, there is nothing surprising about it: at a productivity rate of three papers a week, it is simply impossible not to make mistakes. PubPeer has already accumulated claims against a hundred of their publications in international journals, ten of which have now been officially retracted. It seems that in this case quantity really did turn into quality.

To conclude this theme, let us talk a little with plants — yes, yes, do not be surprised. Scientists from Slovenia, Serbia (the universities in Nis and Belgrade), and the University of Pristina decided to find out together whether plants are capable of talking to people in their own language. To do this, they attached a polygraph to the stem of a potted flower and asked the plant questions: “Are you alive?”, “Do you have consciousness?”, “Does it hurt?” The plant was interrogated using a radioactive source of a uranium isotope. The answers obtained were decoded with the help of AI, which translated them into Serbian. To avoid suffering from radiation themselves, the authors of the study used a homemade orgonite — a bioenergetic shield that transforms negative energy into positive energy.

The researchers’ first important discovery was observing how the experimental “vegetable” — this is exactly how they familiarly referred to the potted plant under study — sweated and changed its pulse and breathing rate. All of this was recorded using a polygraph. As a result, the Balkan scientists concluded that plants can be engaged in a rational dialogue in their own language. The results of the study were published in a scientific journal devoted to issues of… acupuncture.

Behind all these scandalous stories, it should not be forgotten that the majority of Serbian scientists and university teachers are honest professionals who have nothing to do with plagiarism, purchased papers, or other manipulations. The events of the past two years have clearly confirmed this: many of them proved willing to risk their own careers in defense of academic freedoms and democratic principles.

The mass student protests that began in Serbia in November 2024 after the collapse of a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad quickly grew into a nationwide movement against corruption and political pressure on state institutions. Universities became one of the main centers of protest activity: lecturers openly supported the students, while rectors and deans refused to obstruct university blockades. In response, the authorities and pro-government media launched a campaign against the academic community.

Political pressure was not limited to public attacks. At a number of universities, teachers who spoke out in support of students faced refusals to reappoint them, dismissals, and delays in career advancement. The best-known case was that of Jelena Kleut, a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Novi Sad, who lost her job after twenty years of teaching; she herself called what happened a political reprisal. These actions by the Serbian authorities, aimed at suppressing academic freedoms, attracted the attention of international organizations: the European Parliament and the human rights network Scholars at Risk documented an escalation of threats against Serbian scholars, publishing reports on a systemic crisis of freedom of speech.

All these stories are elements of a single ecosystem in which formal indicators replace real science, violations meet no serious resistance, and universities and courts sometimes side with the violators. Politicians themselves, by their own example, have demonstrated for decades that academic integrity is worth nothing if you have power. With this signal, they have been corroding the academic community for years, setting “their own” careerists against those who refused to play their game. It would be a mistake to think that the entire academic community has resigned itself to this state of affairs. But, unfortunately, for now the dialogue between the former and the latter looks more like a conversation with plants.

‘Poles are drinking less and less alcohol’ – Non-alcoholic beer sales fail to save market

By: admin
20 August 2026 at 13:50

In the first half of 2026 alcoholic beer sales fell by as much as 11.9 percent, and despite the sharp increase in non-alcoholic beer sales, this trend is unable to arrest the dramatically deepening economic downturn in the brewery industry, which supports 85,000 jobs, including in agriculture, logistics, bars, and catering.

The beer market has been falling continuously for eight years. Between 2018 and 2025, the market lost over 7.5 million hectoliters in beer sales, which corresponds to the annual production of three medium-sized breweries. In the first half of 2026, there is no sign of a rebound. According to data from the Polish Central Statistical Office, production of alcoholic beer fell by 11.9 percent compared to the same period last year.

“The first half of this year is not encouraging. An alcoholic beer sales decline of almost 12 percent shows how troubled the brewing industry is in Poland. There are several sources, primarily the global NoLo trend (no or low-alcohol) or the ‘Better for You’ trend, which are increasingly effectively translating into the consumption behavior of Poles. Economic issues are also important: beer is a very price-sensitive product, and its retail price has increased by over 40% in recent years,” says Bartłomiej Morzycki, general director of the Association of Brewing Industry Employers Browary Polskie.

Non-alcoholic beer gaining traction

In the first half of 2026 production sold of 0.0 percent alcohol beers increased by as much as 16.2 percent, and in June by as much as 30.1 percent year over year.

“Non-alcoholic beers are a daily choice for professionally active people, drivers and consumers who care about their health and consciously limit their alcohol consumption. They are increasingly choosing 0.0 percent products so as not to give up social rituals or the taste of beer itself. This is a pan-European trend that meets public health objectives,” said Bartłomiej Morzycki.

Breweries unprecedented regulatory and financial pressure

For almost a decade, breweries have consistently developed the 0.0 percent segment, investing in new technologies and innovative products. Variants without sugar and calories, enriched with vitamins and electrolytes, are appearing on the market. At the same time, research shows that non-alcoholic beer has a strong substitution effect, helping reduce alcohol consumption.

“Recent CBOS research has shown that almost one in four Poles has given up alcohol, and among those who consume alcohol, more than half also reach for non-alcoholic beer. The substitution effect makes this segment of social, health and economic importance. Therefore, in many European countries it is supported by the state as an effective element of alcohol consumption reduction policies,” said Bartłomiej Morzycki.

Meanwhile, several projects concerning the alcoholic beverages market are currently moving forward in Poland, which may hinder the further development of the non-alcoholic beer segment, including changes to the “Act on Upbringing in Sobriety and Counteracting Alcoholism,” as well as a proposal to abandon the current excise map. At the same time, the sugar tax in Poland might be expanded and the VAT for zero-income earners may also be increased.

“Never before has the brewing industry faced such a large number of simultaneous changes. Each of them individually affects the operating conditions and competitiveness of beer in the alcoholic beverage market, and their combined impact may threaten the stability of many sectors in the brewing industry value chain. Moreover, the proposed changes go against the grain of socially acceptable alcohol reduction policies,” said the general director of the Polish Breweries Association.

Risk to the entire economy

The brewing industry represents 85,000. jobs, including thousands of farms and Polish enterprises in related sectors. Beer production accounts for approximately 0.56 percent of Polish GDP and contributes billions of zlotys to public finances each year in taxes and contributions.

According to data from the Association of Brewing Industry Employers Browary Polskie, the industry uses approximately 400,000 tons of barley malt, 75,000 tons of other cereals, over 130 tons of alpha hop acids and approximately 30,000 tons of apples used to produce flavored beers. The reduction in production means lower orders for packaging manufacturers, logistics and transport companies, as well as lower turnover for retail and catering.

“Poles are drinking less and less alcohol. If we add sharp tax increases and further administrative restrictions to natural consumer changes, we risk halting positive health trends and deepening the crisis of the entire value chain. Today, we need a well-thought-out, common-sense and emotion-free economic policy towards our industry,” said Bartłomiej Morzycki while speaking on behalf of the brewing industry.

‘It’s terrible for us’ – Mohamed L. stabbed Alban Gervaise to death in front of his young children, and now just 4 years later, he’s being released

By: admin
20 August 2026 at 12:56

Mohamed L. is being released in France after just 4 years in detention, the same man who brutally murdered 40-year-old military doctor and father Alban Gervaise in front of his young children in 2022.

“It’s news that we’re trying to prepare for this early release after the murder, barely four years later. It’s news that is really hard to hear, that makes us really go back to our work of mourning for the children and me,” said Christelle Gervaise, the wife of Alban, in an interview with Legend TV.

“It’s true that it’s hard to imagine being able to be in the same city as him. It’s true that it’s quite unbearable for us.”

Alban was stabbed to death while waiting outside his children’s Catholic school to pick up his two sons, aged 3 and 7, while his 20-month-old daughter was inside his car, in Marseille in May 2022.

Now, the killer will enjoy partial release during evenings and weekends “at liberty.”

The mother, Christelle, is terrified, and the courts so far have refused to listen to her pleas to block Mohamed L. from being in the same city as her and her children.

“I find that it is an additional concern in our lives that we didn’t really need. And I had to announce to my children this early release. There is necessarily a feeling of injustice. How can he leave prison so early after the murder of their father? And then, yes, there is a great concern on the part of my children. That’s for sure.”

This clip is a condensed version of her full interview, but it showcases the horror a French family is facing, both from the murderer and from the French judicial system.

In the interview, Christelle describes the moment of disbelief and grief when she first learned her husband had been stabbed.

“This is not possible, this is not possible, what is happening,” she told herself.

But it did happen, just as it has happened to countless Europeans year after year. Upon arriving on scene, she is greeted with an empty car and no sign of her children.

“And in fact, I’m going to see a first policeman who is going to accompany me to see the principal this time, who reassures me, my children are safe inside the school, all three of them, but I learn from a policeman who comes that my husband is between life and death and has been transferred to the hospital for resuscitation,” she said.

Alban spent 17 days in a coma, where she tried to tell him over and over again that the children were not harmed and that they needed their father.

“And during those 17 days, I talked to him a lot and he … I hope he heard me. I will never know…. I kept repeating several times to Alban that our daughter is fine, that she is okay, that nothing happened at all. Because I imagine that as a father, for him, it was terrible to be attacked like that with a knife. And then to see that he was going to lose his consciousness. He must have felt it and imagined his daughter in danger.”

“I also tell him that he can’t leave, he can’t leave us. Our children are very small, and I need him, the children need him.”

Then, she describes the moment when she had to tell her young children that their father is gone.

“The death announcement to the children is something that I will never forget and I think it’s the hardest moment of my life, really.”

She was forced to sit her children down and let them know what happened to their father.

“So I told them that I had terrible news to tell them, but that unfortunately, their father had died the night before,” said Christelle.

Now, after the terrible ordeal of losing a father and a husband, the French court system is releasing their father’s killer with zero restrictions on him entering the same city as the family. While there is a direct contact ban, there is no guarantee they do not run into Mohamed L. on the street.

Mohamed L. never even faced a trial. Why? He smoked too much cannabis and had a “psychotic break.” The court experts confirmed this, and just like that, authorities deemed he could not be held criminally responsible. No trial and freedom after just four years.

“The fact that he is not imprisoned like a murderer for 15, 20 years in prison. It’s terrible for us. It’s terrible to know the violence Alban has suffered. And in addition, we must accept that after four years, his murderer is outside on evenings and weekends.”

“I am very worried, first of all, about the risk of recidivism. And then I find that for us, it is also a concern, since this person has the right to come to Marseille.”

She said that the authorities involved in the decision say Mohamed L. “must be able to benefit from it, he must have the necessary care.”

The murder already led the children to be forced from their own school. Now, they may have to leave their own city.

“My children have already had to change schools since it happened. They had to change friends. If, in addition, I tell them that we are leaving the city completely because the murderer and their father have the right to go where they want, I think that it is difficult to understand for them. I can’t help but say to myself, I don’t know where he is, I don’t know what he’s doing,” Christelle said.

She is fighting desperately with her lawyer to ensure this killer is no longer allowed in her city.

“The goal is that, is to have a measure that makes it forbidden for him to go to Marseille.”

“It is something that we carry on our shoulders with the children and that we will carry for a very long time.”

After his arrest, while held at Baumettes prison, he attempted to assault a guard, which contributed to his transfer to a psychiatric unit for difficult patients (UMD). This occurred after the murder and presumably, cannabis was not a factor in this assault.

Shockingly, during the trial, one of the psychiatrists openly said that they cannot predict whether the murderer will “relapse.”

“The question of the risk of a relapse. One of the psychiatrists had answered that it was a bit like predicting a plane crash, that it was impossible to predict. Psychiatrists who take care of this type of patient do not have a crystal ball to be sure that there will be no relapse. And this risk is still to be taken into account in the decisions to allow this person to be in the street today,” she said.

In other words, psychiatric experts admit Mohamed L. may murder again, yet, he is being allowed out on evenings and weekends anyway.

Christelle still has questions about how the man was deemed psychologically unfit to stand trial.

She said that after passersby tackled Mohamed L., he screamed: “In the name of Allah, I gave him 30 stab wounds!”

In response, Christelle said: “I always ask myself the question of something that was more premeditated than what you want to make me believe… We are talking about someone who can kill someone in the street. My husband only lasted a few moments. It’s not a fight, it’s a murder.”

“You think he’s going to go to prison. It doesn’t happen as planned. In relation to the trajectory of the murder of my husband,” she added.

“What is complicated, in fact, with this decision, is that we have no idea of the deadline. We don’t know how long he’s going to stay at the hospital in a closed unit. We don’t know how to answer this question. And despite everything, we can still hear that it is difficult to announce to his children that the murder of their father is not condemned to prison, but will have care for an undetermined duration. I also felt deprived of answers to certain questions,” she said.

Regardless, three children are now missing a loving father, with Alban’s wife describing a happy home life before his murder: “We had a life with Alban who was quite classic and very happy. We met in 2009. I was a medical student and he was an intern. We got engaged and then we got married. We had three children. We moved several times because Alban was a military doctor. So we met in Lorraine. Then we went to Paris for his work. Then to Marseille in July 2021. And we really had a very happy family life because Alban was a very loving husband, very loved and a father really present for his children and very invested in his role as a father.”

‘This is the first femicide our city has seen’ – Tunisian migrant arrested for stabbing his Polish wife 4 times in the throat near Rome

By: admin
20 August 2026 at 11:59

During a marital argument, a 69-year-old Tunisian, Mohamed Habib Rouissi, allegedly murdered his 50-year-old Polish wife, Joanna Rouissi, by stabbing her four times in the throat in the town of Colleferro near Rome.

During the argument and murder on Aug. 18, their nine-year-old son witnessed the brutal murder of his mother, and the couple’s eldest son, 20, was also in the apartment and was unable to stop his father.

After killing Joanna, her husband reportedly dropped the knife and fled the scene. The daughter, who returned home moments later, found her younger brother terrified and her mother dying. Despite the intervention of the paramedics and attempts at resuscitation, the victim died at the scene, according to Italian newspaper il Fatto Quotidiano.

As part of the immediate operational activities undertaken, police officers from the Colleferro police station detained Mohamed Habib several hundred meters from the murder scene. The man did not resist and confessed to the crime during questioning.

The Tunisian is now under pre-trial detention.

The Velletri prosecutor’s office is conducting an investigation into the murder, determining the exact course of events and the perpetrator’s motives.

The mayor of the town has also spoken out.

“From what we can understand, the lady was quite well known in the area and by some families of Colleferro. From what emerges, there were some signs of this situation which, however, evidently escaped authorities’ attention or were not considered so dangerous,” said the mayor of Colleferro, Giulio Calamita, while speaking to LaPresse. “This is the first femicide our city has seen in its modern history. A man, reportedly with mental problems, killed his partner. This is yet another tragedy after a difficult week, terrible news that has shaken a family of five children, one of whom is a minor. In these hours, we have given them as much support as we could and will continue to do so in the coming days. I’m sure the city will also find a way to react to this bad story.”

Investigators are also checking whether the family has previously reported cases of domestic violence. According to preliminary findings, tensions had been brewing between the spouses for some time. The couple’s five children were placed in a care facility.

Prescription Drug Prices Fall 3.1% Over Past Year, Prompting Debate Over Causes

19 August 2026 at 13:02

The White House on Monday highlighted the largest drop in prescription drug prices in over 60 years on Monday, saying President Donald Trump "delivered" on his promise to slash prices.

Consumer Price Index: The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the July Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on August 12, showing that prescription drug prices fell 0.8% in July and are down 3.1% from a year ago.

Strong-Armed: Outlets on the right like The New York Post (Right bias) tended to highlight the Trump administration's Most Favored Nation policies, saying the annual decline has taken place as these policies "take hold." According to the article, the "populist president won concessions by threatening Big Pharma with massive tariffs if it didn't move to align its prices with those paid by other major industrialized nations." The article also mentioned that "Trump strong-armed major drugmakers into reducing what they sought from government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid while establishing a new platform called 'TrumpRx' that lists discounts for people without insurance who are paying out of pocket."

Magic Trick: Outlets on the left like The Guardian (Left) and Axios (Lean Left) were more likely to highlight "experts" that claimed the drop in prices were likely a result of former President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act. The Guardian said that Trump, while holding "his hands wide apart as if he had just performed a magic trick," touted that the prices were down "more than at any time over 60 years," but added that the article he held attributed the decrease to Biden.

USS Abraham Lincoln to Return to US After Reports of Mental Crises, Poor Conditions in Middle East

18 August 2026 at 13:02

The USS Abraham Lincoln is set to return to the US after nine months, following reports of mental health crises and suicide, as well as poor conditions such as food shortages and water contamination.

The Details: The naval warship departed from a San Diego, California, port in November, carrying roughly 5,500 soldiers. It was originally set to dock in the Pacific, but was rerouted to the Middle East amid the Iran War. The USS George Washington is reportedly on its way from Japan to serve as the ship's replacement.

Administration Response: US Central Command (CENTCOM) lead Adm. Brad Cooper cited "camaraderie, teamwork and resilience" aboard the ship, which he visited on Friday. He argued that many of the reported concerns were old and rectified. "Of the US Navy's 11 active aircraft carriers," he said, "the Lincoln currently has among the lowest number of cases related to mental health. This doesn't mean it is at all perfect. Find any of the nearly 4 million Navy veterans in America today, and they will likely tell you that service at sea for long periods isn't for everyone." President Donald Trump said the deployment was "not nearly long enough," and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the conditions "completely misrepresented."

How The Media Covered It: Outlets across the political spectrum criticized officials' handling of this case. The Guardian (Left bias) and The Wall Street Journal (Center) agreed that Trump "downplay[ed]" concerns about the conditions, and Daily Mail (Lean Right) said Cooper "brushe[d] off" the complaints. Some outlets on the right, however, highlighted other angles. Fox News (Right), for example, emphasized that the ship "has among the Navy's lowest mental health cases" and highlighted Cooper's assertion that the issues have been "resolved."

Group Published Bogus Polls on Los Angeles and WI Races as Part of 'Social Experiment'

18 August 2026 at 13:02

Median Strategies, a "polling company" Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass publicly referenced during her reelection campaign, has shut down and said that all of its "polls" were counterfeit.

LA Mayoral Race: Median recently published a "poll" that showed the incumbent Bass leading challenger Councilmember Nithya Raman by nearly 12 points. Bass shared the "poll" in a since-deleted post on X and wrote, "Doing the work, showing up, and gaining momentum. Let's do this, LA!" Median claimed the "poll" was based on 560 LA voters between July 30 and August 5 and had a 4.1% margin of error.

LA Times Report: On August 17, The Los Angeles Times (Lean Left bias) said that after "repeated inquiries," Median told it, "Median Strategies was created as a short term social experiment to examine how purported polling information could enter and spread through the political information ecosystem without independent verification. We are not seeking publicity or attribution for the individuals involved and are declining interviews."

More From Median: Median added on its website, "All previously published polling releases have been withdrawn and should not be cited or treated as genuine polling data." The Times said Median began posting on X on August 9 and had 20 followers. It said no one at the company received any "compensation or financial benefit" and that it was not "funded, commissioned, or directed by any candidate, campaign, political party, PAC, media organization, or other outside entity."

NY Post Fooled: Median also claimed 16% of its LA mayoral "poll" respondents said they voted for Republican Spencer Pratt, and that of them 85% would vote for Bass in the general election. The New York Post (Right) relayed this information in a headline, "Spencer Pratt's voters could be deciding factor in LA mayor showdown according to latest poll." The outlet has since changed its coverage, without an editor's note. The new headline reads, "Karen Bass team demands 'full force of law' over bogus poll," and the story focuses on Median's shuttering and its fraudulent nature. Bass's team told The Times and The Post that the poll was written about by media outlets, legitimizing it in their eyes.

Wisconsin Primary: Median also released a "poll" on the Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial primary, where progressive socialist Rep. Francesca Hong narrowly lost to Milwaukee County executive David Crowley. Median's "poll" showed Hong leading by more than 20 points.

Perspectives: Political consultant Rick Taylor told The Post, "There would have been no reason for anyone to have doubted it. Whoever is responsible for this ought to be exposed, and we need to make sure this never happens again." Journalist Bill Scher noted that on August 11 he expressed skepticism at the legitimacy of Median and wrote, "STOP CITING POLL DATA FROM UNVERIFIED SOURCES."

Why Did Trump Scale Back Military Exercises With South Korea?

18 August 2026 at 13:02

President Donald Trump said the US will "substantially reduce" joint military exercises with South Korea, both citing his "very good relationship" with the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, while also noting that South Korea did not agree to help the US denuclearize Iran. Opinion writers from the left, right, and center criticized Trump's decision.

From the Right: Tom Nichols (Lean Right bias), writing for The Atlantic (Left), argued that Trump is trying to "make South Korea pay" for his humiliation in Iran. Nichols wrote that "Trump and the United States have suffered one embarrassment after another" in the Iran conflict and that scaling back US support for South Korea is "an insane decision." He argued that though Trump fears and respects Russian, Chinese, and North Korean autocratic rulers, Trump "is seeking to assuage the psychic injury of his loss in Iran… by kicking America's allies, the nations he can punish without fear that they will kick him back."

From the Center: An opinion contributor for The Hill (Center) wrote that Trump's actions regarding North Korea vs. Iran are a "paradox." The writer argued that the current conflict with Iran was "undertaken with the mistaken belief that Tehran was about to produce nuclear weapons" and that the danger was "somehow…resurrected" despite the alleged success of Trump's Operation Midnight Hammer during summer 2025. They added that even though North Korea already had nuclear weapons, "nuclear weapons in the hands of an assumed maniac curiously disappeared as a problem and danger." The writer questioned if a "rapprochement" similar to Trump's reconciliation with Kim will be possible between the US and Iran but remains unsure.

From the Left: An analysis from the New York Times (Lean Left) suggested that it "remains unclear" whether North Korea's leader will embrace Trump's gesture and that further rounds of diplomacy between Trump and Kim face "much steeper hurdles," particularly because of North Korea's support from Russia and China and Kim's insistence that the US "abandon its insistence on denuclearization." The deputy director at the Asia Society Policy Institute also told The Times, "Trump's description of the D.P.R.K. as 'unthreatening and respectful' is alarming to allies, who have watched the regime steadily improve its missile and nuclear capabilities, while also gaining an additional patron in Russia for its support in the war on Ukraine."
