Rubio: NFL game in Paris will be ‘fine’ despite riots

Dani Watt, wife of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt, challenged the NFL’s decision to keep Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints in France on the schedule after protests over school conditions and living costs led to violence, fires, and

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Rebecca Mac, who owns Cosmetic Finance Group, a Manchester, UK-based aesthetics finance company, and Mc Aesthetics, a cosmetic clinic group. It has been edited for length and clarity.
On Saturday, 110 demonstrations drew 550,000 people nationwide, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, including 110,000 in Paris. Organizers put the national total at 800,000.
I went to Paris to see Céline Dion in memory of my mom.
My mom had loved Céline for years. We had tickets to see her before the pandemic in Manchester before she died, but the show was canceled. She never got to see her perform.
Friday's concert was really emotional. "All Coming Back to Me Now" and "I'm Alive" made me emotional, but "My Heart Will Go On" was the one that really made me cry.
Seeing Céline felt like I was finally doing it for my mom. Little did I know, less than 24 hours later, my friend and I would be trapped in an Uber during the Paris riots.
At about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, we left Galeries Lafayette and saw what felt like a sea of people marching toward us. We were like: "Oh my god. This is crazy." We walked away and got an Uber outside Sephora.
Every road the driver tried was closed. He told us to get out, but young men were running past the car, throwing things and banging. We said: "No, we're not getting out of the car in the middle of this."

Then people threw metal barriers into the road so cars could not pass. We were stuck there, panicking. Within seconds, police with riot shields charged in from the other side.
We thought the crowd was coming toward us and that we were trapped in the middle. The taxi stood still for a few minutes. It felt like we had no way of getting out.

The police formed a line in front of the car and cleared the barriers so traffic could move. It took about 20 minutes to get back to Le Damantin Hôtel & Spa, near the Champs-Élysées, where we were staying.
Roads were sectioned off, and police on motorbikes and police vans with sirens kept passing us as we drove away.
It was very stressful. It just felt very surreal and very long. We were just relieved to be back at the hotel and safe.
Later that night, hotel staff locked the doors as we were leaving for dinner.
Men in balaclavas were passing outside. A staff member told us: "You cannot go out," and said we looked like "perfect targets to be mugged."
After waiting for about an hour, we decided to take a taxi to the restaurant, which was just around the corner.
But it stopped across the road, where another group of six masked men was standing outside. It was quite intimidating, so we walked around parked cars to avoid getting too close to them.

My Sunday flight to Manchester was delayed, so I booked a 9 a.m. flight to London and then an Uber home to Manchester.
I kept thinking about my children. We had been to Paris a couple of years earlier for Disneyland with my little girl, my niece, and my nephew. I thought: Imagine if this had happened then.
I'm so grateful I saw Céline on Friday. It is a memory I will remember forever. But I'm very upset and disappointed because I do like to go to Paris quite a lot.
The whole experience made me lose my love for Paris a bit.

A little over a month ago, at a high school on the outskirts of Paris, a group of students blocked their school to protest the condition of the facilities and the lack of teachers. Within days, students from other schools joined in, first in Paris and then across the country, complaining of leaks in classrooms and even cockroaches, and of walls that are cracking. They are cold in the winter and hot in the spring. That image of public schools — long considered a pillar of the French Republic, but gradually falling apart — also illustrates the economic decline of recent years.

Two specialised maritime security training courses bringing together personnel from Cyprus and Egypt have been completed, focusing on operational readiness, interoperability and cooperation in responding to security threats.
According to a social media post by the Cyprus centre for land, open seas and port security (Cyclops), the courses involved personnel from the Egyptian navy and border guard corps, alongside members of the Cyprus Navy and Cyprus maritime police.
Justice Minister Costas Fitiris was also present at the completion ceremony, alongside the commander of the Egyptian border guard corps.
The training covered Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats, two areas of particular importance to maritime security.

VBSS training focuses on procedures for boarding, inspecting and securing vessels, while CBRN training addresses the risks associated with hazardous substances and potentially dangerous incidents.

Cyclops said the courses were aimed at strengthening operational readiness, improving interoperability between participating forces and enhancing regional security through international cooperation.
The Larnaca-based Cyclops centre was established through cooperation between Cyprus and the United States under a 2020 agreement and was inaugurated in April 2022. Its construction and equipment were funded through a US state department programme, while the facility is owned and operated by the Cypriot foreign ministry.

"The View" co-host Sunny Hostin revisited her widely-discussed 2024 question to former Vice President Kamala Harris during an event on Monday, calling the former Democratic presidential nominee's answer and refusal to distance herself from former President Joe Biden at the time "problematic."
Brian Teta, the talk show's executive producer and host of its "Behind the Table" podcast, selected the moment as Hostin's most memorable on the show. He said it was a "seminal moment" in the 2024 election cycle.
Hostin described the question as a "gift" and said she thought Harris would have to distance herself from Biden because of his approval ratings at the time. She also said "The View" was the perfect venue to ask the question, calling the liberal show's audience "her people."
"I actually thought the answer was going to be, you know, ‘We had a lot of wins in this administration. I was there for those wins, but I, as a woman of color, as a child of immigrants, as I have a different lived experience, and I intend to bring that lived experience with me into the White House. I will do this. I will do that. I will do this. I will do that. I will do that.’ That was what I was expecting. I was not expecting, 'Not a single thing comes to mind.' And I knew honestly when she said it that it was really problematic," Hostin said.
KAMALA HARRIS CALLS TO EXPAND SUPREME COURT, ADD STATES IF DEMS TAKE CONGRESS
The co-hosts noted that the moment was discussed in books published after the 2024 election, including Harris' memoir, "107 Days," and was also featured in a political ad for President Donald Trump.
In "107 Days," Harris wrote that she had no idea she had just "pulled the pin on a hand grenade," with her answer to Hostin's question. She wrote that her staff was beside themselves.
"Stationed at various places around the set, my staff were beside themselves. Political operatives have an eye to see a moment, and I could kick myself for giving the other side that moment. During the commercial break, while I was having a bit of fun with some young students I’d noticed in the audience who were obviously playing hooky, offering to write notes to their teachers after the show, Opal [Vadhan] passed me a note from our team, telling me to return to that question and mention that a big difference would be that I would put a Republican in my cabinet," she wrote in her book.
'THE VIEW' CO-HOSTS CAST DOUBT ON KAMALA HARRIS VIABILITY AS 2028 CANDIDATE
Teta and the co-hosts said they all knew her response was going to be a problem.
Co-host Ana Navarro said Harris' staff "ran" because staff members knew immediately that Harris needed to return to the question and address her answer.
During the show on Friday, both Navarro and Haines said they wouldn't tell Harris not to run, but questioned if she would be the best option for the Democratic Party.
"If the Democrats want to win, I don't think she's the right candidate because I think the Democrats have been screaming for new energy. They've been saying we need something new to combat this. This would be her third time on this ballot. From the first time when she didn't ... she was out really early when she ran, and then the time with Biden, this would be the third time. People are clamoring for fresh energy, and there's a lot of candidates," Haines said.

Co-host Joy Behar has said on several occasions that she doesn't think the U.S. would elect a woman as president, citing Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's losses to Trump. She has said the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee should be a man if the party wants to win.
Hostin questioned whether president would be the right position for Harris during an April episode of "The View" and said she wished Harris had pursued a run for California governor.
"This goes right to the heart of what the Media Research Center has been arguing to the FCC about for months now. The View knowingly operates as a propaganda arm for the Democratic Party and for Democratic candidates," NewsBusters associate editor Nicholas Fondacaro told Fox News Digital in a statement. "Sunny openly admitted that her intention with the question was to help Kamala with what she felt was a layup question that would lead to a slam-dunk answer. This incident was an abuse of ABC's privileged access to the public broadcast spectrum."
